Want to know how to be the favourite aunty or uncle? This episode about taking your nieces and nephews travelling will give you plenty of ideas! Mike Day, a wonderful uncle, starts off by explaining how he really hoped he could give his nephews something special by giving them the gift of travel. It seems to have worked as he has a wonderful story to tell about the impact a trip over a decade ago had on one of his nephews. I then chat with Dianne Bortoletto, a fabulous aunty, about her recent experience in Italy with her niece. To alleviate teenage boredom, Di came up with a very special (and delicious) challenge and surely is now her niece's very favourite aunty! Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech
Sherry Ott's journey - riding her bicycle from state capitol to state capitol, began with her father, Lee, in 1984. In nearly 30 years he connected 23 capitols on foot. Fast forward another almost 10 years and a pandemic later, Sherry would pick up the project, but this time on bicycle. As a travel blogger, adventure and travel isn't new to Sherry - however an adventurous project like this, inside the United States, is. Sherry has been traveling the world, writing, photographing and vlogging since dropping out of the corporate nine to five almost twenty years ago - but her travels have taken her abroad - and the pandemic, the bicycle and her father's project are causing her to explore the lower 48 in a way she never imagined. Tune in to hear the story of the 40-year-long Capitol to Capitol project! Hear about travel to Alaska in winter as the Amateur Traveler talks to Sherry Ott from OttsWorld.com about the state that has captured her heart.
In her 11 years of living nomadically, she's circled the globe multiple times visiting all 7 continents. She lived in Vietnam, hiked the Annapurna Circuit with her father, finished the 10,000-mile Mongol Rally, walked the Camino de Santiago, kayaked in Antarctica, herded reindeer in the Arctic, and drove an auto-rickshaw across India. While quarantining in her home in Denver - she used her time to work on a new Ebook, Where to Go, and When. The book provides inspirational ideas of where to travel each month (for when we can travel again). For each month she chose 3 destinations to satisfy different travel styles (epic adventure, domestic trip, and an international trip or festival) with a short overview of the interesting, cool and quirky things to do there. The destinations were chosen based on trips Sherry has actually done over her 14 years as a travel blogger. Remember when you were young and it felt like you could do ANYTHING you set your mind to? Travel, learn a new skill, start a completely new career - it all felt possible. But in our 40s, 50s, and 60s, we become skittish about trying anything that will challenge us. Well, it's time to call BS on whoever said aging means slowing down! Why age ourselves prematurely by letting our age define us? Today, we are joined by my good friend and travel connoisseur, Sherry Ott. Years ago, Sherry did something scary, different, and downright amazing. She left her well-paying, awesome job and moved out of her apartment to travel the world solo. Sherry's going to help you spark the fire and give you key strategies to go after your dreams, push through discomfort and fear, and do the really big thing we've always wanted to do (even if we've lost touch with it). Sherry will share: The story of her own big leap into the unknown and the brave first steps she took to make sure she followed through on her goal. Why accomplishing tough things makes us more confident and expands what we're capable of. How to spark your imagination and start defining what you want to do. The power of looking at your old photos (for inspiration, not to mourn your youth!) 3 strategies to go from sparking your idea to getting things in motion. How to get out of the wormhole of worst-case scenarios, and see the positive possibilities and unexpected outcomes of stepping out of your comfort zone.
Today's special guest Sherry Ott tells us about kayaking with penguins in Antarctica, driving an inappropriate car from London to Mongolia, riding rickshaws across India, and conquering travel fears. Sherry is a self-proclaimed corporate American runaway and the author of the superb book Where to Go & When. You can also find more of her adventures on the excellent Otts World blog. She's a very worthy guest for episode 150 and she will have you wanting to get travel goosebumps of excitement and fear.

Hear about hiking the Kumano Koto trek in Japan as the Amateur Traveler talks to Sherry Ott about her experience on this trail that was used by medieval emperors on the Kii Peninsula.
The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage network of trails in Japan traces its roots back 1000 years to when emperors and samurai would trek these forested rural paths to Japan's most important sacred shrines and temples. This beautiful trek is a UNESCO World Heritage trail, the only such trail besides its sister trail, the El Camino del Santiago in Spain. It is a challenging hike with significant ascents and descents. Each evening, you stay in a local traditional Japanese inn, partake in the ritual evening bath, and enjoy the outstanding local cuisine. In today's show, we interview world nomad and fellow travel blogger Sherry Ott of Ottsworld.com about her five-day trek of the Nakahechi trail. An avid worldwide hiker, Sherry puts the Kumano Kodo trail in her top 5 trails! Click Here for the Show Notes: https://activetraveladventures.com/kumano-kodo-trail-in-japan Love the show? Sherry Ott planned to take a 12-18 month career break from her corporate IT job in New York City. She was 36 years old and felt like she needed a break. Then, once on the road, she realized she didn't want to stop traveling. She loved having so many new experiences every day. The next step then was to figure out how to keep traveling and make money. Eventually, she decided to totally let go of her possessions and apartment in NYC to become a full-time travel nomad. Today, 11 years later, Sherry makes her living as a freelance writer and photographer, public speaker and social media marketing consultant. In this interview with host Lisa Hoashi, Sherry talks about how the break allowed her to discover what other strengths and skills she had to offer in her work; how her own creative career evolved with the global changes in technology and online businesses; what she enjoyed most about her nomadic lifestyle; and what made her decide to semi-settle down in Denver, Colorado. She gives candid advice on how to overcome the fears that are involved in taking big life leaps, how to try out a digital nomad career, and how to plan a career break that will only enhance your career prospects on your return. Today’s show is the last for Season 1 - Sabbaticals of Leap Like Me. We'll be back for a new season, and new focus in the new year. Ladies! Please join our Be Bold Facebook Group! Today's conversation is with Sherry Ott. Sherry is a long-term traveler, a blogger and a photographer. As she says, her one goal in life is to make you wish you were somewhere else. Over 11 years, she’s lived in Vietnam, hiked the Annapurna Circuit with her dad, drove 10,000 miles from London to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally, she’s walked across Spain on the Camino de Santiago, kayaked in Antarctica, and drove an auto rickshaw across India for charity. When we spoke last year, she was in Denver checking it out and considering making it her home base, which she subsequently did. She is still seeking epic adventures to intriguing places in order to challenge herself and inspire people to overcome their fears and reap the benefits of travel but she now does this from Colorado where she now explores the mountains and fosters kittens. She’s got a pretty big following so you might already know her but if not, she writes about her travel lifestyle and her around the world adventures on Ottsworld.com and her social media channels. In this conversation, we talked about what it was like for her to take a “career break” thinking that she was going to travel for a year which then turned into more than a decade. Along the way she turned those travels into a lifestyle and into work as a digital nomad. Although it sounds quite sexy, she admits there is downside to being on the road for so long including the stress of having to make so many logistical plans and figuring out where she’s going to sleep every night. Not to mention the loneliness that comes with it. We also talk about how the tools and technology have changed over the years and how they’ve made being a digital nomad possible. Sherry shares some great insight into her lifestyle and I know you're going to love this conversation! ______ By the way...I’d love to hear your feedback! Sherry Ott is a long-term traveler, blogger, and photographer with one goal in mind - to make you wish you were somewhere else. She writes about her travel lifestyle and around the world adventures on Ottsworld.com and her social media channels. On the About Page of her website, Sherry very prominently quotes author John Le Carre. He said, “A desk is a dangerous place from which to view the world.” We love it, and Sherry lives it.In this episode, Sherry Ott tells us the story of how she transitioned from a corporate job in IT, sitting behind a desk, to traveling the world for more than 10 years as a digital nomad.Sherry recently decided to come off the road full time, and now has a “real” home in Denver that she visits once in a while (once a world traveler, always a world traveler!). We talk about what brought her to that decision when it always seems digital nomads are living the life most people can only dream about. Why the change? We also talk about how, like most digital nomads, Sherry makes a living from quite a few different sources. She barters, trades and sells her expertise, whether it be photography, social media consulting, writing, volunteering, housesitting and more, for all the elements of travel, from accommodations to meals to experiences and such. We’ll hear all about that and more in this episode.Sherry has lived in Vietnam, hiked the Annapurna Circuit with her father, drove 10,000 miles from London to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally, walked across Spain on the Camino de Santiago, kayaked in Antarctica, and driven an auto-rickshaw across India for charity. She continues to seek out epic adventures to intriguing places in order to challenge herself and inspire people to overcome their fears and reap the benefits of travel. Sherry Ott was once living the good live in New York City. She had a great job as a project manager in the information technology sector. Sherry was living the perfect American lifestyle. Perfect for what we're told “The American Dream” is anyway. Perfect on paper for that resume that stated that she went to school, […] The post Sail Loot Podcast 012: From Corporate America to Ottsworld with Sherry Ott appeared first on Sail Loot.
Sherry Ott is calling from the other side, where adventure lies, to show you that it’s not that scary, it’s not too uncomfortable, and it’s not a bad career move to take a career break for long term travel. But before she became this explorer of an amazing world, Sherry Ott was living, working, and earning six-figures in New York for three years. But when she was 30, she took a vacation and met other travelers who asked her a question that would change her life. In this episode, you’ll hear how Sherry viewed an extended career break as a challenge, took it on, planned, fell in love with exploration, got hooked, and rather than returning, created her own life of travel. Her story will make career breaks accessible for anyone who is longing for long term travel, and how she’s able to financially support her travel lifestyle through blogging and freelancing. Today, she’s a digital nomad and corporate American runaway, who escaped her cubicle in New York City and has been traveling nomadically and solo for over 7 years now, helping others recognize that they can do the same, and writing about it on her blog Otts World. If this is something you want, to finally take that trip and have these experiences, then listen to how and why Sherry has embraced a nomadic lifestyle and how she believes anyone can give themselves the permission to travel long-term. This is part 2 in my conversation with Sherry Ott. Listen to part 1. Subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher Radio, Soundcloud or TuneIn Words from an Explorer “I don’t want to wait for my retirement to climb Kilimanjaro because I don’t know if I’ll be able to.” What You'll Learn Why Sherry has embraced her addiction to new experiences, and what it means to feel this desire to challenge yourself How baby steps can help get you to where Sherry is today What you learn, about the world, others, and yourself, through experiencing the challenges of travel How Sherry affords her travel by lowering her income standards and cost of living Why we have definitions of what we SHOULD be doing that trump what we DESIRE to do Sherry says fear stops us from taking career breaks and so she created Meet Plan Go to help people meet others who actually have taken these steps to break down that fear and inspire others to do the same. Sherry’s Best Travel Advice: The First Step: For long term travel, do not get overwhelmed with the planning. Don’t worry about every night. Plan the first 1/3 of your trip. You’ll discover yourself, your interests, and you’ll appreciate the flexibility later on. Planning is easier once you’re out there, surrounded by options and spending time with others doing the same thing. You never know if you might meet someone, find work, or change your mind! Money Saving Tip or Travel Hack: Get out of hotels and stay with locals. Guest houses, short-term apartments, places that have a kitchen and force you to go to the local markets, and allow you to cook rather than spend more and eat out. You save money while having a more authentic experience. Packing Advice: Buy things where you go, and roll your clothes! Favorite Travel Gear: Mobile Wifi device Favorite Book: Tales from Nowhere (Lonely Planet Travel Literature) Weirdest Food: Balut (fertilized duck egg) Mentioned on this Show: OttsWorld @OttsWorld MeetPlanGo Sherry’s Rickshaw Run Video Music Credit: Move Slow by Felxprod ft. Sherry Ott was burned out. But rather than to go on vacation, she decided to do something a bit more radical. She quit her six-figure job as an IT director and project manager to spend a year traveling around the world. Having only started traveling internationally at 30 years old, with only a few trips under her belt, she was new to this challenge. But she quickly became addicted to the new. The Amateur Traveler talks to Sherry Ott again about a very recent trip to Lebanon. Sherry traveled to Lebanon as part of a program with a cultural exchange program with Geovisions which involved in a home stay. She stayed much of her visit in Beirut which at least used to be known as the “Paris of the Middle East”. Since that time Lebanon and Beirut in particular has come through a horrific civil war as well as a war with Israel. Now that peace has come again to the country Sherry could still see the scars from the prolonged conflict but also could enjoy the recovering city, the nightlife, shopping and food in Beirut. In March in Lebanon you can ski in the morning and go to the beach in the afternoon. She also had a chance to visit the historic city of Tripoli where she say the traditional souk and the ancient city of Sidon (Saida) which is over 6000 years old.
