We kicked off our adventure at Meteor Crater RV Parrk! Then, made our way to Winslow, AZ (yep, the “Take It Easy” corner from the Eagles!). Got our Route 66 fix and a tasty lunch at The Relic. Next stop: Santa Fe, where we woke up to snow—twice! Drove through snow-covered landscapes to Taos Ski Valley and soaked in the views. Santa Fe's charming adobe architecture was stunning, but dinner? Not so much. Now, it's onward to Texas for some sunshine and good times with friends! Let the next adventure begin!

JP Morrison Lans decided to grow up to be an artist while visiting the Carole Laroche Gallery in Santa Fe New Mexico when she was eleven years old. Five years later the Tulsa Artist Coalition supported this dream for her when she was accepted for her first solo exhibition. Since then she has earned her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, co-owner a gallery, had her work purchased for the permanent collection of the Bundaberg Regional Gallery in Queensland Australia where she lived for two years and created immersive art installations for AHHA Tulsa, the Living Arts New Genre Festival, and the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. Morrison Lans has shows her work with M.A. Doran Gallery, Tulsa; Heron Arts, San Francisco; Keep Contemporary, Santa Fe; and 19 Karen, Gold Coast, Australia. She has been a resident artist at SVA, NY., Truro Art Center, MA., Rockland Woods, WA., the Vermont Studio Center and Quarantine in Menorca, Spain. Morrison Lans is a member of the international artist collective Teleportal.Gallery and is an inaugural member of the NYC Crit Club's Canopy Program. She and her child can typically be found experimenting with encaustic and lego, respectively, from their home studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma.Statement:I explore the relationship of body and psyche by combining figurative realism, symbolic objects and intuitive abstraction. These collected elements are metaphors for my experience of womanhood, motherhood, love, loss, self-preservation, panic, desire, and knowing. Through layers of color pencil I create translucent skin. The addition of gouache and encaustic allows me to comb sheens and dimensional shapes around my drawing, forming membranes and isolated objects which express the subject's emotional escapades. Often I use orientation dissonance –the inversion of the figure– to symbolize circumspection, surrender, gestation, and metamorphosis. I render hands frequently, they represent intention and action, also the mouth, tongue and teeth as gateways between the inner self and outer world. Through taste and touch, we experience intimacy and desire. This anatomy creates boundaries while also being an entry point. My work invites you to experience this same push pull of entering and observing from a distance.

I have been looking forward to speaking with you on the two states of emotions, loneliness and solitude and I want to unpack them while giving you some actionable items for you to use to help you on your journey of self-discovery. I share the story of the Loretto Chapel and the miraculous staircase, a beautiful and magical story that takes place in Santa Fe New Mexico. In particular, I share my busy weekend and how being present with my solitude really helped me overcome my loneliness. As a life coach, I encourage my clients to embrace solitude. And well the taking in of this solitude can be done through meditation or through just being in stillness. Or it can be in a walk or hike. And you see It's in these quiet moments of solitude that we have an opportunity to discover our true selves, away from the noise of the world. Solitude provides us with an opportunity to reflect on our goals, values, and the path we are on. It's a crucial component to our self-care and to our personal development. I've been lucky in recent months to be able to speak to people who've been leaders and change makers in the regenerative space for a significant amount of time. Building on that knowledge and experience I got to speak with Dr Mark Nelson. Mark is Chairman of the Institute of Ecotechnics, head of Wastewater Gardens International and has worked for several decades in closed ecological system research, bioregenerative space life support, ecological engineering, restoration of damaged ecosystems, desert agriculture and wastewater recycling. Notably, Dr. Nelson was a member of the eight person “biospherian” crew for the first two year Biosphere 2 closure experiment, 1991-1993. The project included pioneering regenerative agriculture and waste and water recycling. Even before that, in the 1970s, he planted an organic fruit orchard at Synergia Ranch, Santa Fe NM and has helped manage its organic fruit and vegetable farm for decades. As Associate Editor of Life Sciences in Space Research, he is also an author and contributor for numerous books including “Pushing Our Limits: Insights from Biosphere 2”, “The Wastewater Gardener: Preserving the Planet One Flush at a Time” (2014), and “Life Under Glass: Crucial Lessons in Planetary Stewardship” (2020) by Mark and two fellow biospherians. I first planned out this interview withMark to focus on his work with wastewater management and gardening, but I quickly realized that it was only a small part of the work and experience in his expertise. As a result, we cover a lot of ground in this session ranging from the work and development on the Biosphere 2 installation and what it was like being part of the research team who lived there for two years. Mark talks about his work and learnings from decades of international ecological projects including those focused on wastewater management and how all these diverse places and contexts continue to inform the Ecotechnics initiatives. We also get around to focusing on his book “The Wastewater Gardener: Preserving the Planet One Flush at a Time” published by Synergetic Press. There we dissect the key considerations for safe harvesting and reuse of wastewater and the potential uses of it in gardens and beyond. Making use of wastewater is becoming more and more essential as the energy intensive and expensive methods of purification are quickly becoming unfeasible. Though people are becoming aware of this necessity and its potential it's still going to require a lot more visibility to be adopted at the scale that is needed, so I hope that episodes like this will act as a catalyst to get more listeners like yourselves to consider how using waste water might fit into your own projects.
For this week's episode I am on the road at the excellent Regenerate conference put on by the Quivera Coalition in Santa Fe NM. After three days of Conference, networking, meeting new friends and having some really open conversations my friend and previous guest Cole Bush (episode #28) sat down with me and her two right hand men to talk about how Cole has developed her business over the last two years since we last caught up. Cole Bush, or Cole, a modern-day shepherdess and a visionary in regenerative agriculture. Raised in Southern California, Cole has circled back to steward 240 acres in the Ojai Valley, where she champions ecological land management through her work in education, advocacy, and innovative agrarian entrepreneurship. She's the co-founder of Shepherdess Holistic Hides, promoting ethically raised local goods, and leads the Grazing School of the West, preparing the next generation of graziers for impactful land stewardship. Dylan, the pioneering CEO of Boek House Hearth & Husbandry. A Southern California native, Dylan is a first-generation shepherd and rancher dedicated to reviving our connection with the land through regenerative agriculture. With a background in permaculture and holistic management, he's transforming landscapes and local food systems by integrating livestock into the ecology of the land, enriching it and the community with nutrient-rich, ethically raised produce. Dylan's work extends to leading roles in Shepherdess Land and Livestock and the Savory Institute's Land to Market program, embodying his commitment to sustainable land stewardship and cultural virtues.
