Bruce Simpson, a 74-year-old attorney from Lexington, Kentucky, shares a powerful and deeply personal journey through decades of untreated mental health struggles and his eventual path to healing. Having long denied his mental health needs out of fear of stigma and perceived weakness, Bruce masked his pain, even as it intensified through his legal career. The cultural and personal biases he internalized kept him silent, leading to a life fraught with hidden struggles, including a meticulously planned suicide attempt. However, a sequence of events, including an intervention by law enforcement and his subsequent stay at Eastern State Hospital, ultimately saved his life. Bruce describes this turning point as transformative, allowing him to begin therapy and embrace medication, which has drastically improved his quality of life and cognitive clarity. Bruce's story highlights his newfound advocacy for mental health treatment and spiritual connection. A self-described skeptic of both mental health care and religion, he now credits therapy, medication, and prayer for his recovery. He emphasizes the importance of dismantling societal stigma, viewing mental health issues as legitimate as physical ailments like cancer or heart disease. Bruce's experience serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that even after years of silent suffering, a fulfilling and purpose-driven life is possible. Now, he dedicates himself to helping others by sharing his story openly, aiming to reach those who feel isolated or believe they cannot be helped, proving that recovery and peace are attainable.

Bruce B. Simpson, Senior Advisor to McKinsey & Company, joins the podcast to deliver thought provoking analysis and critique of the state of corporate purpose and ESG. Bruce argues that “longtermism” is where shareholder and stakeholder interests actually converge; how employees, investors and consumers are taking to social media to voice their opinions and challenge management to embrace change; why embedding ESG “into the muscle” of the organization is the key to driving change, creating business value, and delivering new sustainable business models that will outperform competitors.

*THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED PRIOR TO THE OUTBREAK OF COVID-19* Bruce Simpson's current position is CEO of Time + Tide, a collection of luxury lodges in Zambia and Madagascar. Prior to this, over a nearly 30 year career he has held a multitude of positions within Wilderness Safaris, Singita, &Beyond and North Island in the The Seychelles, starting as a guide and ending up as a CEO. Bruce's knowledge of Southern African tourism is almost unparalleled, not only has he run lodges across the bottom of the continent, but he has also lived in Namibia, Botswana, The Seychelles and his native South Africa. Peter and Bruce discuss how the tourism industry in Africa has evolved over the last 30 years, the importance of environmental and cultural sustainability, where Bruce sees as the next up-and-coming destinations in Africa and what it's like to come face to face with a herd of elephants in the bush, among many other things. It's a bit of escapism from the travel industry of right now, and hopefully will provide some insights for the industry we will have in the future.
Tonight we are joined by Bruce Simpson ( xjet ) and we discuss a variety of topics from apps that recreational pilots can use for LAANC authorization to how to better spread the word about the FPVFC.

In This Episode We Discuss: a) How to recognize when our organizations focus too heavily on innovation at the expense of creating lasting change. b) How leaders at every level of the organization can get their teams "unstuck," and begin to actually move the company forward and help it to genuinely evolve. c) What are the crucial tasks senior leaders must do to reduce "adoption paralysis" and ensure their company truly remains innovating and customer-focused d) Lots lots more....
