On today's episode, I talk to musician and cartoonist Jeffrey Lewis. Originally from the Lower East Side, Jeffrey has bounced back and forth between his two loves comics and music for most of his professional life. As a cartoonist, Jeffrey's longest project was Fuff, which he wrote and drew from 2004 to 2020. He also created Revelations in the Wink of an Eye (My Insane Musings on Watchmen, from Conspiracies to Stupidities), and his most recent project is called Statics, which he started writing and drawing in 2022. As a musician, Jeffrey began as part of the New York antifolk scene that would play at the SideWalk Cafe in the 1990s. He released his first album When Madman Was Good - Version One in 1997, and four years later he was signed to Rough Trade, who released his first "official" album The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane. Since then, he's released over two dozen albums and EPs, and his latest The Even More Freewheelin' Jeffrey Lewis just came out on Blang Records, and it's a banger! Grudzień, 1935. Aktor Charley Chase tego poranka przeglądał pocztę. Jak to bywało w okresie świątecznym, napływały kartki z życzeniami. Jedna z nich wyróżniała się szczególnie. „Wesołych Świąt i szczęśliwego Nowego Roku, Charlie. Thelma Todd”. Constantine Giavos comes from Richmond restaurant royalty. The son of Katrina and Johnny Giavos, Constantine's grandmother is Stella — yes that Stella — the namesake and inspiration behind his family's most well-known restaurant. Serving as creative director for his family's impressive portfolio of restaurants, it was the re-launch of Stella's that launched Constantine into the family business. "I started with the relaunch of Stella's in 2011. That's when I really got involved," Giavos, who studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York said. "Continental was the second one. It kind of steamrolled from there." While his parents and others handle what comes out of the kitchen at Giavos-family restaurants such as the aforementioned Stella's, Continental (2x), plus Little Nickel, Sidewalk Cafe, Kuba Kuba (2x), Galley, and Perly's, Constantine handles what you experience upon entering the space. He sets the tone by, among other things, designing each restaurant's decor, choosing the dishes and drinkware, settling on menu font types, and curating the playlists that send music into guests' ears while hearty portions fill their bellies.  Learn all about Constantine, his design philosophies, and his music career on this episode of Eat It, Virginia!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Rocky, Mayur, Abhinandan and Prashant drive across Tamil Nadu. During their journey, the gang deep-dives into the culture and stories from this region while they travel across topographically wide-ranging cities with equally vivacious food culture. The drive into Tamil Nadu starts with Rocky breaking down the myth that it’s a predominantly vegetarian state. As he explains, Chennai has some of the most delicious Kadhai Quail and Nand Curry, and these dishes are a sign of how much the people from this part of the country love their meat. Meanwhile, Prashant describes a brusque ordeal with a representative of the Meenakshi temple in Madurai where, as they later realised, cameras and shooting was not allowed. Prashant also talks about how, like a good Dilliwala, he got out of the mess. Making inroads into his memories of Chennai, Abhinandan talks about one of the most satisfying breakfasts he’s ever had at Murugan Idli, a fairly medium-sized local favourite which now has branches in multiple countries. Rocky recollects the wide range of chutneys that were served at Murugan and how they could constitute a meal in itself. The team then drives to Mylai Karpagambal Mess, a small family-run eatery in Chennai’s Mylapore. As they pick through their memories, the gang talks about the authentic cuisine the owner dished out, and how he had borrowed the recipes from his mother and grandmother. The team reminisces about Mylai Karpagambal Mess as much for the man who ran it as for the food. As they drive out of Chennai, Rocky takes the listeners to the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre For Herpetology. This, as Rocky mentions, is a crocodile conservation centre which had more than 23 species of crocodile when they visited. The centre is also credited with having released more than 5,000 crocodiles and alligators back into the wild. The team then makes its way to the “fountainhead of biryani”, as described by Prashant: Dindigul. Rocky explains how Dindigul’s unique version of biryani came to be, and how it’s prepared with short-grain rice and lots and lots of spices. He also explains the difference between “kacchi” and “pakki” biryani. Heading from spicy biryani to great coffee and confectioneries, the gang drives to Puducherry, where Rocky demonstrates his “French Punjabi” style of speaking. Prashant recalls his long walks down the promenade, and why it’s the best place to have a meal in the middle of the night. Mayur remembers the French owner and French wine at Satsang Hotel, where Rocky ate unforgettable pork chops. The team then goes to Kodaikanal which, as Abhinandan describes, has a beautiful drive leading up to a small town with a small marketplace filled with restaurants and cafes. Mayur leaves our listeners with a list of the most famous things from Kodai, which includes magic mushrooms, chocolates and schools. The next stop is Ooty, with great food at the Sidewalk Cafe, and then Madurai, where they embarked on a search for Amma Mess. Rocky remembers a meal at one of the messes, of bone marrow omelette, rabbit roast, and Chicken Kalikattu. The conversation ends with everyone swapping stories on the energy of the Tamil people and their passion for politics, films, and food, and Abhinandan’s trip to his maternal hometown of Tirunelveli where he ate its famous Halwa. Welcome to our 70th Episode! We connected with the incredible song-writer, singer/performer Shilpa Ray on a chilled night in Brooklyn, NY. Shilpa and I are both 1st generation children of immigrants to the U.S., her story is one she tells with both aplomb and humility. After gigging the open-mic circuit of the East Village's Sidewalk Cafe, Shilpa's earlier works would be passed along to the luminary Nick Cave, who'd help in releasing 2013's 'It's All Self Fellatio'. Last year's full-length 'Door Girl' is where we connect so we dig our heels into the self-reflection of that great project and much much more. This will definitely be a treat for Shilpa fans and hopefully introduce folks that may not be hip to her music! Don't for get to subscribe where-ever you listen to podcasts. This bi-monthly LIVE radio show on Radio Free Brooklyn hosted by NYC's Killy "Mock$tar" Dwyer is a tasty comedy music treat for your ear holes. Mock-U-Mental is served up with a healthy dose of live jams and interviews with your favorite comedic musicians, topped with listener questions, comments, requests and prank calls, paired with a feel good, mock bottom drinking game. Come play along with Killy, her enigmatic husband Craig Schober, her dog and featuring Jim Melloan Listen LIVE every other Friday 8-10pm on http://radiofreebrooklyn.com/ About Jim: Jim grew up mostly in New Jersey, with a four-year stint in London, England as an adolescent. He graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in Theater. He's a founding member of ImprovBoston, and this year attended and performed in the 35th anniversary celebration for that now-august institution. He's been writing songs and music since high school. In the mid-'90s he hit upon the idea of writing funnier songs after discovering the downtown alt-performance mecca Surf Reality. Since then he's performed his music at the usual suspect venues: Surf, Collective Unconscious, Bowery Poetry Club, Sidewalk Cafe, and The Footlight. He also still does some acting, having performed in plays at HERE and a few other venues.

Cathy Humes, host of the show Pancake Comedy at Sidewalk Cafe in lower east side NYC, came by to admire the gorgeous glow of my salt lamp. We talked about the real meaning behind the salt lamp, placebo effect, and we played a pretty blasphemous game of "What food is your body and what drink is your blood"?

"I don't like to be rude to people who are interviewing me, like Bob Dylan was, but I wish I could be" My guest this week is English musician and podcaster Laura Marling (@lauramarlingoffical) . Laura shares with me what she has learned from doing her own show Reversal of the Muse, and then regales me with stories from her early days: dropping out of high school, sleeping in a double bass case, playing the Sidewalk Cafe in the mid 2000's, and much more. Plus we talk about psychoanalysis, the challenges of doing music today, and how people misperceive her.

The best interview subjects and the best comedians share a common thread: brutal honesty. There’s a sense that nothing is off-limits in pursuit of the perfect joke or honest answer. Jason Nash, to his credit, is nothing if not honest — often times brutally so. About his career, about his life and, most frequently, about his marriage. In fact, the comedian recently released a movie on the subject — the fittingly straightforwardly named Jason Nash is Married. “The secret to a great marriage is very simple,” Nash sums the whole business up in a voice over at the end of the film’s trailer. “One person eats shit and the other person soars like a bird feeding off the lost dreams of the first person.” Nash and I sat down at the Sidewalk Cafe in Manhattan while the comedian was in the city promoting the film’s video on demand release. And just as one would expect, things got really real.
