Abhay is joined by comedian Amit Tandon for a broad conversation sharing insights into his journey in comedy, discussing the importance of relatability, the art of writing jokes, and the challenges of maintaining relevance in a rapidly changing industry. He reflects on the evolution of his craft, the significance of audience observation, and the balance between content creation and innovation. Amit also talks about the guardrails he sets for himself in comedy, the anatomy of a good performance, and the importance of continuous improvement in his work. Try and catch his show Halwa  which he he showcasing currently on tour across the globe.(0:00- 2:33) Introduction(2:33) Part 1 - keywords, being relatable, being a better listener/observer(12:30) Part 2 - storytelling and timelines, pushing boundaries, anatomy of a good show(30:55) Part 3 - delivering intelligent comedy consistently, life before and after stand-up comedy, satisfaction vs ambition(42:56) ConclusionIntro:So if I were on stage delivering stand up comedy, I'd likely be petrified both as a performer and also in trying to create material that someone other than me would find funny.  But as an audience member, maybe the best characteristic that I seek out in a comic artist would be honesty, manifesting in such a way that it builds connection through laughter and shared experiences. Now recently, I was able to catch up with comedian Amit Tandon, who is currently touring across the world with his latest show called Halwa.  Amit is a veteran performer who is known for his clean, relatable, and honest content - which allows him to constantly evolve and hone his well-crafted art.  He went from life as a successful  engineer and entrepreneur, to being the first to have a Hindi solo stand up show on Netflix appropriately called “Family Tandoncies”. Amit's writing and observational style of humor have drawn audience and critic praise alike, especially with relating personal experiences of marriage, family relationships, and the sometimes awkward and surprising truths that govern our own internal reflections. His style is definitely friendly, intelligent, sharp, and in a way bonding- and not just because of the relatability factor with Amit, but also the compelling and connected joy that you're left to seamlessly realize with the people in your own orbit. So when we caught up, we chatted about the nuances of his comedy and storytelling craft, balancing guardrails and pushing boundaries, AI (of course), and even straddling ambition and satisfaction as an artist.  But of course, as I was searching through some of his work, the recurring popups on YouTube were showing online orders for chaat and food snacks, and real estate in Pleasanton, which is heavily populated with Indian families here in the Bay Area - a clear sign I guess that the algorithmic key words and cookies are working well. So… I asked him to reflect a bit on what he thinks those Amit Tandon key words… might be?

There was a deep rumble - the sound of machines. It was what inspired him - the loud noises and the reverberating echo of progress as the noise grew and grew in a great harmonious cacophony. Some said that one day machines would rule us all, little did they know about the wild ambition of mad scientists and anarchists who would use them to unleash unruly madness. However, the machines could be just as peaceful if they were allowed to be. Just because something roars does not mean that it has to bite. Forthcoming on Compost Records, a compilation which spotlights and showcases the best of a newish generation of krautrock featuring producers and musicians such as I:Cube, Fred und Luna, Abrão and many more. This track from Halwa takes our pick of the bunch.

If you ask someone in Kerala what's the best halwa they have ever had, they would most probably say it is the Kozhikode Halwa. Halwa or sweet meat as the English colonizers called it, is so popular in Kerala that there is a street in Kozhikode named after it - The Sweet Meat Street (SM Street). RJ Jaisal narrates the story of a 14 year old boy, Alan Das, from Kozhikode's SM Street who miraculously saved an old woman's life with his incredible presence of mind. So how did he do it? “After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relatives.” - Oscar Wilde Good food does that and more. We talk about food in this episode – its salience in our celebrations, its magic in evoking memories, being a marker of our identity, in experiencing the divine and as an expression of love. There’s no stopping our appetite to talk about food. From Gandhi’s letters and Vivekananda’s wanderings to Naipaul’s distaste and Rushdie’s memories, in the chaats of Assi Ghaat, the mahaprasad of Puri, in films like The Lunchbox and Maya Bazaar – food is everywhere in our culture. We serve up a platter that should sate you. In Spotlight, we talk about life and times of Begum Akhtar. From the penury of a childhood spent in Faizabad to being the toast of musical soirées across India, Begum’s trailblazing career gave dignity and respect to light classical singing forms like dadra, thumri and ghazal. The strong classical roots of her gayaki combined with an easy, assured style and an arresting stage presence made Begum a cultural phenomenon of post-independent India. A Begum Akhtar disc playing in the living room reflected a refined taste. We pay our tribute to the tour de force that was Begum Akhtar. Plus, our usual discussion on what we are reading, listening and watching.       Episode Highlights: 00:00 to 25:00 – Introduction, Food in Culture, Celebration of Food, Onam Sadhya, Bhojohari Manna 25:00 to 45:00 – Food as Memory, Midnight’s Children, Guide, Bawarchi, Maacher Jhol and Caribbean Chutney Song 45:00 to 65:00 – Divinity of Food, Food in Puri, Udupi, Kashi, Chaat, Malaiyo, Karejwa, 65:00 to 100:00 – Food as Identity, Gandhi and Garlic, Veg/Non-Veg divide, Premchand’s Pandit Moteram Ki Diary, the great Rosogolla debate, The Mistress of Spices, Golmaal, Mithun’s Rice Plate and Halwa-waala 100:00 to 120:00 – Food as an Expression Love, A Love Supreme, The Abundance, The Lunchbox, Aamish, Ganashatru, Neeraj Ghaywan’s Juice, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye 120:00 to 145:00 – Introduction to Begum Akhtar, What Makes Her Unique, Early Life, Ghazals 145:00 to 174:00 – Post independence Fame, Singing the Great Poets (Ghalib, Momin, Faiz, Kaifi, Shakeel), Thumris and Folk Songs, Disciples and Legacy 174:00 to 180:00 – Recommendations   *अन्न ही जीवन है और जीने का मुख्य आधार है* हजारों साल पहले लिखे गए उपनिषदों में वर्णित यह ब्रह्म वाक्य, अनेक युगों का साक्षी होते हुए, आज भी एक शाश्वत सत्य की तरह हमारे साथ हैं। LinkOuts: Books Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie An Area of Darkness by V.S. Today, I'm so pleased to introduce you to Karishma, an Indian-born woman who relocated to Australia when she married, 2 years ago. Today, Karishma is teaching us about halva, a Indian sweet served at celebration times, made from whole wheat flour, ghee, and simple sugar water. Although the ingredients are simple, the process is not, but Karishma's grandmother, who cooked many years for a household of 20 people, perfected this recipe in a way Karishma believes very few have perfected it. Karishma's grandmother often brought this dish to the temple as an offering, where others would receive it and bring it home as a symbol that “no one who seeks blessing will leave empty-handed.” Now, to Karishma, Halva is an embodiment of nostalgia and the love of her grandmother, and like her grandmother, Karishma now makes the dish in large quantities not only for celebrations, but whenever she or her family crave it. Listen to Karishma Now Highlights Christmas in July and sunbathing in December Imagine cooking 3 meals a day for 20 people... for 10 years The most terrifying recipe I've ever attempted Halwa as a symbol: "No one who seeks blessing leaves empty-handed "Women are the makers" Adjusting to Australian culture Recipes Related to This Episode An Indian Dessert: Halwa Recipe How to Contact Karishma Instagram: @food.rumblings

In this episode, Rocky, Mayur, Abhinandan and Prashant drive across Tamil Nadu. During their journey, the gang deep-dives into the culture and stories from this region while they travel across topographically wide-ranging cities with equally vivacious food culture. The drive into Tamil Nadu starts with Rocky breaking down the myth that it’s a predominantly vegetarian state. As he explains, Chennai has some of the most delicious Kadhai Quail and Nand Curry, and these dishes are a sign of how much the people from this part of the country love their meat. Meanwhile, Prashant describes a brusque ordeal with a representative of the Meenakshi temple in Madurai where, as they later realised, cameras and shooting was not allowed. Prashant also talks about how, like a good Dilliwala, he got out of the mess. Making inroads into his memories of Chennai, Abhinandan talks about one of the most satisfying breakfasts he’s ever had at Murugan Idli, a fairly medium-sized local favourite which now has branches in multiple countries. Rocky recollects the wide range of chutneys that were served at Murugan and how they could constitute a meal in itself. The team then drives to Mylai Karpagambal Mess, a small family-run eatery in Chennai’s Mylapore. As they pick through their memories, the gang talks about the authentic cuisine the owner dished out, and how he had borrowed the recipes from his mother and grandmother. The team reminisces about Mylai Karpagambal Mess as much for the man who ran it as for the food. As they drive out of Chennai, Rocky takes the listeners to the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre For Herpetology. This, as Rocky mentions, is a crocodile conservation centre which had more than 23 species of crocodile when they visited. The centre is also credited with having released more than 5,000 crocodiles and alligators back into the wild. The team then makes its way to the “fountainhead of biryani”, as described by Prashant: Dindigul. Rocky explains how Dindigul’s unique version of biryani came to be, and how it’s prepared with short-grain rice and lots and lots of spices. He also explains the difference between “kacchi” and “pakki” biryani. Heading from spicy biryani to great coffee and confectioneries, the gang drives to Puducherry, where Rocky demonstrates his “French Punjabi” style of speaking. Prashant recalls his long walks down the promenade, and why it’s the best place to have a meal in the middle of the night. Mayur remembers the French owner and French wine at Satsang Hotel, where Rocky ate unforgettable pork chops. The team then goes to Kodaikanal which, as Abhinandan describes, has a beautiful drive leading up to a small town with a small marketplace filled with restaurants and cafes. Mayur leaves our listeners with a list of the most famous things from Kodai, which includes magic mushrooms, chocolates and schools. The next stop is Ooty, with great food at the Sidewalk Cafe, and then Madurai, where they embarked on a search for Amma Mess. Rocky remembers a meal at one of the messes, of bone marrow omelette, rabbit roast, and Chicken Kalikattu. The conversation ends with everyone swapping stories on the energy of the Tamil people and their passion for politics, films, and food, and Abhinandan’s trip to his maternal hometown of Tirunelveli where he ate its famous Halwa. In this episode, Rocky, Mayur, Abhinandan and Prashant drive across Rajasthan. Rocky starts off with a story about how Abhinandan thought he was having a heart attack. The conversation steers towards “kinky kulfi” (Rocky and Mayur’s version of King ki Kulfi) and Bajwa Dhaba on the way to Jaipur. Heading towards Bikaner, the gang talk about the Karni Mata temple in Deshnoke, famous for having thousands of rats in and around it. They recollect people offering prasad to the rats and eating from the same plate, as is the custom. Here, Rocky recommends a visit to Jodhbir near Bikaner for a sighting of different species of vultures. Abhinandan talks about Sharma Dhaba on Sikar Road. When they visited, it was a tiny dhaba on the highway towards Jaipur. Today, it’s a 200-seater air-conditioned restaurant with a loyal customer base. Prashant explains why its speciality, the Mawa Ki Roti, is, well, so special and how it often takes several wasted attempts to produce one edible roti. Abhinandan talks about finding the official “Best Dahi Bhalla in India” in Sendra and the secret recipe that makes it special, as revealed to him by the man who makes it. Talking about what makes Rajasthan so special, Rocky describes how they wanted to shoot at a licensed bhang shop near Jaisalmer. He remembers running through the streets of Jaisalmer after a few bhang cookies and lassi, flapping his arms, convinced he was a bird. Mayur recalls having six meals after the bhang only to end up in a hotel room with Rocky ordering two trolleys of munchies. Abhinandan recalls a sobering drive that Prashant took them on to reach the Sonar Kella in Jaisalmer, to capture it glowing as the sun set. The gang then head to Udaipur, where they first tasted camel milk. To shed this unpleasant experience, Prashant describes the Deogarh Palace and the Palak ka Halwa they had there. Moving on to Jaipur, they talk about the food at Rawat Mishthan Bhandar, especially its delicious Pyaaz Kachori and Kishanlal Ramnarayan lassi. They explain how to spot the real camel fair in Pushkar and what they think about it being a touristy place now. They also discuss the two amazing meals Rocky had in Udaipur and a lot more, only on Highway On My Podcast. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the case of sugar, 'abuse' could be having a large piece of cake plus ice-cream, plus a bar of chocolate, but only once in a while. On the other hand, 'addiction' is feeling the need for dessert everyday. So, how can you break the addiction at a habit-level first, and then at a psychological and physiological level?
