Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Why do you like the music you do?  Is it as simple as “It's what I heard on the radio”? Or something deeper? People with elder siblings may be exposed to music earlier than first children.   Jeff had an older brother, so was exposed earlier to cool music - Beatles, Janis, Hendrix, and so on.  Mick was the eldest in his family and had to find his own taste. (No surprise considering what he listens to!) Were you bullied as a child?  Influence!  Did you share music with your friends?  Influence!  Did you have access to a good radio station?  Or print media?  Influence!! We talk about our early influences – musical & otherwise – and look at how they played a role in what we listen to today.    In Rock News, Ringo has released a country album, and Toto is touring.  Oh well, shouldn't take them long to play their 3 hits. You know Jeff's obsessed with AI, so he asked three AI brands to nominate the greatest albums of 1971.  Not much variation, really.  One day, we may ask them to understand quality, rather than sales figures, and see what they give us.    Our Album You Must Listen to Before you Die is “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - an top grade album that deserves to be here.  Mick references Atlantic Records' sampler called “Very Together” which featured “Carey” from this album, and pointed out a link between Joni Mitchell and Scottish hard rock band, Nazareth. How did YOUR tastes develop?  Drop us a line & let us know. Enjoy! References:  RAM Magazine, Rock Australia Magazine, Countdown, Molly Meldrum, 2DoubleJay, The Magus/Holger Brockman, Chris Winter, Mac Cocker, “Never Mind the Bollocks”, The Sex Pistols, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, David Bowie, “Five Years”, “Room to Move”, Chris Winter, “Starman”, “Rock'n'roll Suicide”, Birdland, Weather Report, Joe Zawinul, Brian Eno, “Another Green World”, “Zawinul Lava”, “Rock'n'Roll Animal”, Lou Reed, Steve Hunter, “Sweet Jane”, “Heroin”, “Rock'n'Roll”, Berlin, Alice Cooper, Velvet Underground, Peter Gabriel, “Car”, “Stranded”, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, “Song for Europe”, “Street Life”, “Psalm”, Sisters of Mercy, XTC, Nico, REM, Television, Patti Smith, “Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band”, The Beatles, "Within You Without You”, “Tomorrow Never Knows”, Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Like a Rolling Stone”, Revolver, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garfunkel, Pearl, Janis Joplin, Tapestry, Carole King, Slade Alive, Hot August Nigh”, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, “Dark Side of the Moon”, “Led Zeppelin IV”, “Silk Degrees”, Box Scaggs, “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”, Rick Wakeman, “Woodstock”, “Monterey Pop”, “The Song Remains the Same”, “The Last Waltz”, The Guitar Spa, Redeye Records, John Foy, bootleg records, “His Master's Voice”, “Sheetkeeckers”, Australian electronica/dance music store, Hipgnosis, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Regurgitator, “I like your old stuff better than your new stuff", DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Blue, Joni Mitchell, Henry Lewy, “Very Together”, “This Flight Tonight”, Nazareth  Episode Playlist  The first song played by 2DoubleJay - “You Just Like Me ‘Cos I'm Good in Bed”

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! In case you hadn't noticed, we love a good cover version! This episode, we're looking at covers - staples, covers from strange sources, and some songs that have had a LOT of covers, including a bunch of covers of Bowie's “Heroes”. Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is “Is This It?” by The Strokes. This week on RadioWilderLive.com, we're throwing it back to our 3rd anniversary show, where we celebrated with a wild audio party! From a simple tribute to my daughter to 7 years of amazing memories, we've come a long way! We kick it off with some bluesy grit from Albert King's "The Hunter," then Lucinda Williams got things steamy with "Walk On!" Excited to debut new music from New Jersey's Kanake with their killer track (trust us, you'll dig it!). Keith Richards rocks in with "Get Off of Me," followed by a late 60s flashback with Love's "Seven and Seven." The Ventures, arguably the greatest instrumental band ever, prove their chops with "Walk Don't Run" (38 albums charted in the 60s, that's #6 all-time!). Dion croons the beautiful "Why Must I Be a Teenager in Love?" while The Sonics, the original garage band, growl out "Have Love, Will Travel," later covered by Paul Revere & The Raiders in The Dueces. And a shout-out to my other Syracuse grad besides my Dad: Lou Reed with the epic "Sweet Jane." And The Verbs round it out with the smoking hot "Burnt Out Star." Join us for our third-anniversary show four years later. What a wild ride it has been! Thanks for rocking with RadioWilderLive.com for all these years!

This week's guest is movie poster illustrator and designer Akiko Stehrenberger. Akiko was born in South Lake Tahoe, California in 1978. A first generation American, she is the second youngest of four children with one sister and two brothers. Akiko's father, designer Mark Stehrenberger is Swiss German and her mother Aichu Yeh from Taiwan—which, until she was eight years old was under Japanese rule— and they met when they emigrated to Los Angeles in the 60's. Akiko's mother spoke both Japanese and Mandarin but fostered more of a Japanese culture. Although she was not a professional artist, she encouraged Akiko to take up drawing and apply for art school; that being the preferred option to her enlisting for the army, which came close to being a reality. And so, in 1997 Akiko began studying illustration and design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. She also worked a variety of jobs to get through college and after she graduated in order to pursue her career and pay off student loans. New York beckoned and she moved from Southern California to learn the trade of becoming a designer and illustrator. When her mother became ill, Akiko moved back to LA. It was also coincidentally at the time when magazines were moving online that she fell into the movie poster industry, which changed the course of her life. In 2004, she officially began her career as a movie poster artist. It would be the film Funny Games, for which her poster was chosen, that put creative directors and the film industry on notice that here was an artist making her mark. Akiko is now a 23-time CLIO Award winner who was deemed the “Poster Girl” by Interview Magazine. Vanity Fair included her Funny Games and Kiss of the Damned posters in their “Best Movie Posters of All Time” list. Her "Da 5 Bloods" is on view at the Academy Motion Pictures Museum. Akiko's portfolio includes Portrait of a Lady on Fire, TÁR, Dune, Beef and Everything, Everywhere All at Once, to name just a few. Akiko combines traditional illustration techniques and modern graphic design to create textural elements with fearless experimentation showcasing her crafty intuition and versatility by capturing the essence of a film in a single image. New Life director John Rosman said: “Akiko is simply one of the best poster artists of all time.” Her first book, Akikomatic: The Work of Akiko Stehrenberger, published in 2020 will be updated with more recent posters later this year for its second edition. Few bands have maintained such consistent vision, quality and stability as Cowboy Junkies. The same people who made the 1986 debut album Whites Off Earth Now!! and the recorded-around-one-mic breakthrough The Trinity Session (1988) also made their new album, Such Ferocious Beauty. Throughout, Michael Timmins has been the primary songwriter and plays quietly roaring guitar leads while his sister Margo supplies hushed, haunting vocals, brother Peter drums and longtime friend Alan Anton plays bass. Michael Timmins discusses what has changed and not changed about his songwriting, how Lou Reed reacted to their version of “Sweet Jane,” the keys to choosing cover songs, how the band falls into a hypnotic groove on stage, and whether they ever were in danger of splintering. Also, are Cowboy Junkies as serious as they appear?

Pat Todd has been called the most sincere rock and roll singer/songwriter on the planet.  His first group, the LA-based Lazy Cowgirls, called it quits in 2004 after nearly 25 years together. Pat Todd, raised in Indiana, formed a new band, the Rankoutsiders. In them, I hear Jason and The Scorchers, the Georgia Satellites in their prime, cowpunk, and gassed up the guitars with bang-bang-bang drums, all driven in 5th gear. How had I not heard of Pat Todd until 2022?  I have no idea.  But now I have and find a need to share it with my rock and roll compatriots.  So turn it up and let's rock together.  Maybe it's a new find for you too. Giving you an artist and a band that takes total inspiration in sounds and chord changes from 50 years ago - Berry riffs and Sweet Jane chord changes - and twists them enough to make them work now. Wanna hear a band recorded in a room together and sounding alive?  Let's go. There is nothing cute about them unless you call harmonica and acoustic guitar cute. The sound of Faces and Stones, garage rock, Louie Louie messiness, and FU brashness. Episode 39 of Season 5 went out live at 7 pm sharp on 29 Sept 2022.  As usual, the show was hosted by Rebel Rock Radio.  We got going with Jorn and a track called 'Some Day They Will Put Out the Sun', it was agreed that if it was in Soth Africa it would have been out long ago, or broken, or lost.  Next up Hell Fire out of San Fransisco, a truly wonderful band with a track called Cities Ablaze off their 2nd album called Free Again.  From there a bit Sevendust with ‘Black' and Last In Line with ‘Already Daed' with Vivian Campbell playing like he used to in Dio, which is fitting as they are Dio but without Ronnie James Dio.   We went back to the early '70s circa 71/72 and listened to Mott The Hoople Cover the Lou Reed classic ‘Sweet Jane', which led to Neil Young's ‘Sugar Mountain', sweet thing geddit?  A new track from Billy Idol off his new EP The Cage went down well, as did a new track off Ozzy Osbournes latest album Patient #9.  We listened to 'Immortal' featuring Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCreedy.  Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan in Mr Big reminded us just how well bass and lead can fit together.   We took another new track off Five Finger Death Punch's latest album AfterLife.  Germany got a look in with Die Toten Hosen and ‘Alles Wir Gut'.  We carried on with last week's discovery, a band called Sumerlands, and then went off in a classic rock direction with 'Riders On the Storm' specially dedicated to one of TSORR's much-appreciated listeners ho lost a family member this week :-(. We had tracks from The Stranglers and The Jam, it's just punk by virtue of the time the bands were formed and their history but I consider them truly iconic rock bands.  The ladies were represented by Brody Dalle and her band The Distillers with ‘The Hunger' and The Donna's and a track called ‘Who Invited You'.  The South African stuff came from When Angels Came, Francois Van Coke, and Fire Horses.  After that, we checked out the debut album from My Chemical Romance and a track called 'Headfirst For Halos' which is really cool.  We finished heavy with In Flames, Arch Enemy and Slayer. Artists featured:  Jorn, Hell Fire, Sevendust, Tremonti, Last In Line, Mott The Hoople, Neil Young, Mr Big, Tygers of Pan Tang, Rush, Billy Idol, Black Spiders, Alice In Chains, Bush, Anvil Black Veil Brides, Die Toten Hosen, Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, Sumerlands, Rob Zombie, The Doors, Live, The Stranglers, The Jam, Parkway Drive, Venom, The Donna's, The Distillers, When Angels Came, Fire Horses, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, in Flames, Arch Enemy, Slayer

At the onset of the 1980s, Reed recruited his finest post-Velvets band, including guitarist Robert Quine and bassist Fernando Saunders, and reimmersed himself in raw guitar rock on The Blue Mask (1982), addressing his fears, ghosts, and joys with riveting frankness. No longer bedeviled by his addictions, Reed adopted a more-serious if less-daring tone on his recordings, peaking with three releases that were less concept albums than song cycles: New York (1989), about the spiritual death of his hometown; Songs for Drella (1990), an elegy for his 1960s mentor, Pop art conceptualist Andy Warhol, done in collaboration with former Velvets bandmate John Cale; and Magic and Loss (1991), inspired by the deaths of two friends. A romantic relationship with American performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson rejuvenated him again in the mid-1990s, resulting in the playful Set the Twilight Reeling (1997) and the harder-hitting Ecstasy (2000).In 2000–01 Reed collaborated with director Robert Wilson to bring to the stage POEtry, which was based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. The songs from the show were also packaged, with spoken-word interludes, on The Raven (2003)—an ambitious if critically panned experiment. It was followed by Animal Serenade(2004), an excellent live recording that echoed Reed's landmark 1974 concert album Rock 'n' Roll Animal. In 2006 Reed celebrated New York City in a book, Lou Reed's New York, which collected his photography. Reed was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Velvet Underground in 1996 and as a solo performer in 2015.From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Lou-Reed. Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:“I'll Be Your Mirror”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZudHYTya-dQ“I'll Be Your Mirror Lyrics”: https://genius.com/The-velvet-underground-ill-be-your-mirror-lyrics“Lou Reed, 1942-2013”: https://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/28/arts/music/lou-reed-dies-at-71.html

SONGBIRD Season Two continues with a double-decker "behind the song" episode, all about Raychel and Gun/Parkside. We ask the big questions, like "Is Raychel our Sweet Jane?" and dig into SPITBALL's nimble, loose style. At any given moment you understand that we rehearsed like crazy and none of this is by chance.   Marco speaks with Molly Fitch (vocals/guitar), Chris Orcutt (drums) and Mike Webb (bass), about everything from the rougher parts of Brooklyn and falling asleep on the D train, to how it was considered an insult to be compared to Bruce Springsteen if you were part of that quirky 90's downtown music scene. This episode includes never-heard before live recordings of Raychel and Gun/Parkside from their very first CBGB's show.
