This is the podcast's 100th episode! (Give or take an ICYMI episode.) We are coming full circle with today's guest—John Pan, MD '70, RESD '74, the Father of Integrative Medicine at the GW School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS), the Office's founding medical director, and the founder of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine. Sitting in are co-hosts Dr. Leigh Frame, Dr. Misha Kogan, and Janette Rodrigues. Historically, GW was on the leading edge of the Integrative Medicine movement. Early on, the SMHS recognized the value of combining conventional and complementary medical therapies into health care. In 1998, Dr. Pan, then a clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, founded the GW Center for Integrative Medicine, one of the first of its kind to be established at an academic medical institution. Dr. Frame is now the Chief Wellness Officer of GW Medicine, Executive Director of the Office of Integrative Medicine & Health, Director/Research Director of the GW Resiliency & Well-being Center, Associate Professor in the Departments of Clinical Research & Leadership and Physician Assistant Studies and co-director of the Frame-Corr Lab here at GW. Dr. Kogan is the Chief Medical Office of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine, Associate Professor of Medicine here at GW, Founder of the nonprofit Access to Integrative Medicine Health Institute, and author of "Medical Marijuana: Dr. Kogan's Evidence-Based Guide to the Health Benefits of Cannabis and CBD." ◘ Transcript bit.ly/3JoA2mz ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 16th of April and here are today's headlines.Stating that the court will not let them “off the hook” at this stage, the Supreme Court today gave one week's time to Yoga guru Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna to tender a public apology in a case against the company for publishing “misleading adverstisements”, claiming cure for some diseases and criticising the allopathy branch of medicines. The bench said, quote, "You are doing good work but you can't degrade allopathy." Unquote. At least six people, including two minors, have drowned while two others are under treatment after a boat they were taking to cross the river Jhelum this morning capsized. The children were on their way to school. Water levels in the Jhelum have risen post incessant rains over the last three days. While it is unclear how many children are still missing, two are admitted at Srinagar's SMHS hospital. The two suspects, arrested from Gujarat in connection with the shooting outside actor Salman Khan's Bandra residence on Sunday, have been remanded to police custody till 25th of April. Identified as Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal, the two men were arrested from Bhuj in Gujarat where they had escaped after the incident. They belong to Champaran in Bihar.Cricketer Hardik Pandya's comeback to the Indian team for the T20 world cup might well depend on how well and how often he bowls in the remainder of the IPL. In a meeting between India head coach Rahul Dravid, chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai last week, it's understood that a decision was taken that Hardik has to bowl regularly if he wants to make a comeback. The Indian Express understands that the major part of the discussion in the two-hour meeting was about the seam bowling all-rounder which the team is looking for in the USA and West Indies, which will host the world cup.US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has postponed his visit to India this week in view of the evolving situation in West Asia following escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran. The senior Biden administration official was scheduled to hold wide-ranging talks with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval on the progress in implementation of the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies besides other issues. It was the second time this year that Sullivan has postponed his trip to India. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

The operators of Rockingham General Hospital do not believe claims a man may have been sent to the morgue while he was still alive are true, saying senior doctors said what was noticed inside the man's body bag was not unusual. Hospital bosses will investigate whether death certificate procedures and protocols were followed after the death of 55-year-old Kevin Reid early last month but not whether he was alive when placed in a body bag and taken to the morgue. That is a matter for the coroner. South Metropolitan Health Service chief executive Paul Forden said the hospital was launching an investigation into why the death of Reid was dated September 6 on paperwork - the day after he was considered deceased by medical staff. Forden was responding to claims made by a doctor to the Coroner's Office, reported by WA Business News, that he found Reid inside the body bag on September 6 with limbs in positions different to how he had been left, a tear on his arm that had been bleeding and his eyes open despite them being closed before he was taken to the morgue.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Every dog gets its day, and thanks to the popularity of social media holidays, so does every person, place, thing and activity too. Anything from traditional holidays like Labour Day and Thanksgiving, to annual and reoccurring events like Daylights Savings and Leap Day, and frivolous novelty days like National Fleece Day or Pancake Appreciation Day get the spotlight usually once a year, and rarely is there a week without at least something to celebrate. Some are steeped in history and tradition, some the results of quick thinking marketers over the last century, but all are fantastic excuses to get your brand out there by taking advantage of already existing themes, messages and shared sense of community. According to marketing expert and serial entrepreneur TJ Mapes, any Shopify and e-commerce business, big or small, can easily, quickly and effectively piggy back on any SMH by following these simple engagement tactics: Be informative. The least aggressive kind of SMH outreach, informative messages arent trying to push any one product, or announce a sale, but simply act to raise awareness for the day in question, while tying your brand identity to the spirit of helpfulness, like reminding customers to change their clocks during Daylight Savings. Even if totally unrelated to your products or services, customers will click through and read the message, and remain engaged with your company. Be funny. The vast majority of SMHs are jokes to begin with (including International Joke Day on July 1st), there so that people can have a little fun and break up the monotony of the modern work week. Be willing to embrace the silliness of these days, even if you're not pushing any specific sale, product or service; customers appreciate brands that are approachable, self aware and above all seem and want to be seen as open, friendly and above all, human. Be creative. You've educated them, you've entertained them, now go for the sale without losing that creativity or funny loving spirit. A clever flash sale, like 10% off with the promo code “Punxsutawney” on Groundhog Day, or an interactive contest, like cutest cat photo receives a free gift or bonus discount, will help keep your customers engaged, guessing, amd excited to see emails or SMS from your brand, even after the fun is over and they're just receiving traditional messages about upcoming deals and products. Summer tends to be the season of downturns for online shopping; consumers are more likely to be out and about, typically visiting shops in person or travelling, and there are no blockbusting gift or sale-related holidays until well into the fall. As such, Shopify and e-commerce store owners may find the summer months to be a drag, with no great events to theme any product pushes around, save the simple fact that it is summer, and much less consumer interest or traffic. That's where non-bank holidays, what are rapidly becoming known as Social Media Holidays, come in. What Are Social Media Holidays? That's where non-bank holidays, what are rapidly becoming known as Social Media Holidays, come in. A SMH can vary in importance or impact, ranging from the typically ignored Denim Day on April 28th, to more well known and traditional holidays (that, usually, don't result in business closing early), like Halloween, St Paddy's Day, or Valentine Days. These days are a boon for any store owner looking for a short burst of traffic, and for customers looking for an excuse to break up the monotony of their days, chasing novelty for novelty's sake. A clever SMH campaign, through a company like Omnisend, such as simply posting copyright-free photos of dogs on National Puppy Day can bring a welcome wave of fresh traffic and attention to any store, regardless of product or service offered, with little to no time or resource investment. SMH campaigns however can be a double edged sword when it comes to the heavy hitters of the Social Media Holidays, like Mother's Day. Before the rise of the internet, Mother's Day was infamous among retail and restaurant workers for being the true crucible of workers, a highly profitable crunch that can yield a massive one-day gain. It may seem all too easy and obvious to, in the days of social media, bombard your channel with Mother's Day coverage, tugging at the heartstrings of consumers, and getting them to show their love to Mom with another new purchase, but some SMHs, like Mother's Day, may unexpectedly poison your well. Whereas in the past, advertising media had to be engaged with by a customer to be consume, a choice made by them to interact or not, modern ad methods, such as automated messaging, can side-step this barrier, and deliver what may be unwanted or even jarring alerts to otherwise interested users. Days like Mother's Day and Father's Day, along with Remembrance Day, or other SMHs that seek to address either deeply personal relationships or spotlight societal problems, can be deeply traumatic, exploitative or emotionally disruptive to some customers. Interrupting their day to interject unwelcome feelings or associations that they may have spent a lot of time and energy dealing with or avoiding can cost you a dedicated and loyal customer. According to Pitstop host Lucas Walker, there is a simple way to not only avoid upsetting any of your consumer base or users, without a major investment in time or money from you, but deepening your customer's sense of trust and personal engagement with your store and product; before rolling out your Mother's Day SMH campaign, reach out to your members, and give them the choice to opt out. Presented as a direct text based message, no elaborate designs or pushes to sell, from either the company brand ambassador, head or founder, this simple choice, left up to the customer themselves, can turn your relationships with your customers from one of transactions to loyalty, humanity, and respect, and actually drive later sales even further, as returning consumers show their appreciation for your consideration. NOTE: We recorded this bonus episode before the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to cancel the HEAART lecture series. We hope to re-launch it sometime in 2021. Today, we're talking about the Medical Humanities with Linda Raphael, PhD, who directs the Medical Humanities Program and Track here at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Raphael brings to this discipline a background of teaching and scholarship in 19th and 20th century American and British literature, holocaust literature, and philosophy. Dr. Raphael holds an MA in History and a Ph.D. in English and studied philosophy as a postgraduate at Oxford University. She was a faculty member at Ohio State University before joining the faculty in the GW Department of English in 1996. In 2005, she developed courses in narrative and medicine and became the Director of Medical Humanities at SMHS. Her research and writing are increasingly directed toward narrative and medicine, including “how doctors listen to patients” and “what patients want in a physician.” We discuss the following: 1. What are the Medical Humanities? 2. How were you introduced to the Medical Humanities? 3. How do the Medical Humanities impact patient care? 4. What does the research tell us about the benefits of the Medical Humanities? 5. Tell us a little bit about your research and writing on narrative and medicine. 6. How do you incorporate the Medical Humanities into physician wellness? ◘ Related Content GW Office of Medical Humanities https://smhs.gwu.edu/medicalhumanities/ Medical Humanities: An international journal published by the BMJ https://mh.bmj.com/ The Importance of Medical Humanities https://www.mededpublish.org/manuscripts/1958 Why are medical humanities relevant in an era of technologically-driven healthcare? https://www.healthethicsblog.com/single-post/2018/02/21/why-are-medical-humanities-relevant-in-an-era-of-technologically-driven-healthcare ◘ Transcript http://bit.ly/2IYEuwe ◘ This podcast features the song “Follow Your Dreams” (freemusicarchive.org/music/Scott_Ho…ur_Dreams_1918) by Scott Holmes, available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial (01https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/) license. ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.
