My guests today are Rick Ruback and Royce Yudkoff. Rick and Royce are Harvard Business School professors who teach their students how to search for, acquire, and run small business directly after graduation. It has been almost a decade since our first conversation, and unlike many past interviews that have become outdated due to technology or market changes, the core principles they shared about entrepreneurship through acquisition remain remarkably relevant today. They explore fascinating developments in the search-fund ecosystem, including the bifurcation between funded searchers targeting larger companies and self-funded entrepreneurs finding success with smaller businesses. Rick and Royce share their accumulated wisdom on what makes a company worth buying, why the "magic is in the multiples," and how their students consistently achieve impressive returns through patient, value-oriented business acquisition. Please enjoy my conversation with Rick Ruback and Royce Yudkoff. Same Page Ministries is Mark Donohue's ministry. Mark helps to guide CEO's, business owners, coaches, pastors, and more on a journey of becoming as successful in their family life as they are in their business life and/or ministry. Mark was responsible for leading 50 of his peers in high school to Jesus while being mentored in a student ministry by his youth pastor. When that happens in a small community, even the surrounding communities hear about it... and we heard about his reputation as a life changer through out our county! Now years later, Mark is a husband, a father, a business man, and a ministry leader. Tom Cole moved to Southern Oregon in 1995 with the thought of starting a new regional chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Instead, what he saw around Medford made him realize the community was full of families whose children weren’t getting the educational support they needed, many of them low-income and from households that didn’t speak English. In 1998, Cole piloted an after-school program at one school, serving 50 students with a $500 grant. Since then, his efforts have turned into a full-fledged nonprofit called Kids Unlimited, which operates in nearly every public school in the Medford School District. In 2013 the organization launched the Kids Unlimited Academy, a charter school for underserved communities. Lupita Vargas was in kindergarten when she started in that first Kids Unlimited after-school program. At that time no one in her family spoke English, she says, and the tutoring and other support that the program provided to her and her three siblings was life changing. Vargas joins us, along with founder Tom Cole, to tell us more about her family’s experience, and talk about her job now as the nonprofit’s director of educational services.

Porter shares insights on generosity, positivity, and living a great life today on The Wow Factor podcast. He discusses how he has felt the power of generosity in his life and career and why he thinks there is a link between giving and happiness. In our conversation, Porter discusses the development of Texas A&M University's core values and the importance of these values for Aggies, past and present, and their families. Porter also digs into leadership qualities and why you gain so much insight into character when you look at their actions rather than words. “We developed a sense of humility and appreciation for the opportunities that students are given here.” - Porter Garner “I see young people aligning with our core values.” - Porter Garner “When vision and philanthropy come together, it inspires future generations of Aggies to indeed do what they've done.” - Porter Garner This Week on The Wow Factor: How Porter got his role at The Association of Former Students at Texas A&M University Porter reflects on his 42-year association with Texas A&M, including the unique aspects of the school's history and culture The history of the Association of Former Students at Texas A&M University The association's inclusive approach today, 23 years after the launch of the Aggie Network, that allows for the recognition of non-graduates and graduates alike Why Aggies value humility, selfless service, and camaraderie, with a strong sense of tradition and reputation Porter discusses the development of Texas A&M University's core values and the importance of these values for Aggies, including the comfort they provide to parents and the sense of belonging they foster among students The importance of integrity and ethical leadership, and inspiring others as a leader The importance of Aggie Park, built exclusively by private philanthropy, as a place where legacy is alive and future generations of Aggies can have the same experiences as past students Why it's so vital to give with a cheerful attitude Porter's strong belief in treating everyone with respect and kindness, regardless of their position or role Porter Garner's Words of Wisdom: You learn a lot about people when you watch how they treat other people —it's perhaps the greatest insight to character that there is. Important & easy topic of always being open to learning throughout life. But it's coming at you from a tough reminder. A former student of mine passed away from cancer. She was in her early - mid twenties. She left a huge impact on others from her radiant smile and laughter, to her genuine care for others. It's a part of life I know, but still difficult to grasp onto. She taught me about bravery, courage, laughter, not giving up, caring for and loving others, etc. So many people have taught me these and other important lessons - all to many former students that have passed away over the years. We all have those same lessons from others passing away that we knew in our lives. It's important not to let those lessons go unnoticed. The other part came from this outstanding podcast from John O'Leary interviewing Chelsey Goodan on the subject of "stop underestimating the teenagers in your life". Listen to this episode HERE.
