Meanwhile, Cordelia and Wesley inadvertently start a feud with the neighbouring dental office.   Then, Cordy gets knocked up because she dares to sleep with a man. We're on a break at the moment, researching and writing our sixth series, but, to fill the gap, this is the last of six new compilation episodes containing a trio of stories from across our earlier series. We've entitled this episode Three Watery Graves, for reasons which will quickly become apparent, if they aren't already. Each is also a ghost story, so if you're in the mood for that sort of thing then you've come up trumps with this one! They include our second-lap Westmoreland story, The Somnambulist, and our second lap story from neighbouring Cumberland, The Last Touch, and our recent Cheshire story, The Cursed Fisherman of Hoylake, so we hope you've brought your waders. We really hope you enjoy them, if you're a Patreon supporter then we'll speak to you again on Thursday for our Film Club episode about 2017's The Ritual before our monthly newsletter for March comes out on Saturday. Then though, we'll be back next Monday for our first episode of Series 6!The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Because this is our last "County Episode" for a while, what with next Monday seeing the start of our month-long Haunting Season of spooky content, for this week's episode we've pulled out all the stops, going a bit bonkers for the half-forgotten history and folklore of Westmoreland! We start off chatting about various Harvest Fair traditions, including beliefs about Michaelmas, "Lawless Hours" and the delightfully anarchic Kidderminster Fray - after which we wend our way to Westmoreland.Aside from chatting about some of the county's history, including its flooded Corpse Road, the Romantic 'Lake Poets' who called it home, and sites like Kendal, Grasmere, Appleby and Lake Windermere, Martin throws the sweet and savoury together for this week's County Dish, with delights including Westmoreland Sweet Lamb Pie and the county's traditional Pepper Cake! When it comes to folklore, interspersed with some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with the one and only TAFFY THOMAS!!!! (yes, you read that correctly) England's first-ever Storytelling Laureate who shares two tales in just this episode, we talk about Westmoreland's murderous giant Girt Will, Mary Baines the Witch of Tebay, the Curse of Levens Hall, and much more besides. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's take on "The Somnambulist" which draws together William Wordsworth, the legend of Aira Force, elves, dragons, questing knights, and a healthy dose of the supernatural...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and we'll be back on Thursday with a new Something Wicked bonus episode about the glamorous 17th century mass murderess La Quintrala ahead of Saturday's full Local Legends chat with Taffy, and the launch of Haunting Season 2024 next Monday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Our next guest on the podcast is Essie Fox, reading from her instant Sunday Times bestseller, The Fascination. It's a Victorian story about the estranged grandson of a wealthy collector of human curiosities, who becomes fascinated with teenage twin sisters, leading them into a web of dark obsessions... And we love this dazzlingly gothic novel from the bestselling author of The Somnambulist. ‘A magical, macabre masterpiece' - A.J. West, author of The Spirit Engineer  This is a perfect pick for anyone who enjoyed Laura Shephard-Robinson's The Square of Sevens or Liz Hyder's The Illusions. (And if you'd like a non-fiction book on the subject of Victorian circuses and curiosities, then read John Woolf's The Wonders.) The Fascination by Essie Fox is published by independent publisher Orenda Books and available now. We recommend buying a copy from your local indie bookshop or you can visit our shop on Bookshop.org. Or you can grab a special signed and numbered first edition with beautiful sprayed edges from our indie bookshop friends Goldsboro Books. Research scientist Shea Caldwell has always had a thing for security consultant, Derek Oneiros. He's smart, handsome, and built like a Greek god. As attracted as she is to him, though, she's afraid to let him into her bed – because she's dangerous when she sleeps. Derek is known among his brothers as “The Machine,” yet his carefully cultivated control is put to the test whenever he's around Shea. The woman is as beautiful as she is intelligent, but they've always kept things professional – until Derek learns why. Shea is sleepwalking again, but what she doesn't know is that he may be the only one who can help her. For he is a Greek daemon, and he's charged with protecting her dreams. With Shea threatened, Derek makes things personal, and their nights together turn steamy and intimate. He's ready to battle against the Somnambulist that's been controlling his lover in her sleep, yet is the night creature really causing all the harm? When Shea's groundbreaking research notes are stolen, it's clear that other evil forces may be at work.

North and South is Elizabeth Gaskell's fourth novel and considered by many to be her best. It tells the story of Margaret Hale, a principled young middle-class woman from the rural South whose family are obliged to re-settle in the Northern industrial town of Milton. Joining us to discuss the novel's contemporary relevance, are two new guests: Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad and Nell Stevens, author of the memoir, Mrs Gaskell & Me. We cover the books presentation of labour relations at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the changing position of women in society, the reasons for Elizabeth Gaskell's uncertain reputation, her unsentimental treatment of death and – spoiler alert – whether the novel's ending works. Also in this episode, Andy is impressed by No Document, Australian writer Anwen Crawford's ground-breaking work of elegiac non-fiction and John enjoys the exquisite imagination on display in Chloe Ardijis's Dialogue with a Somnambulist, the Mexican novelist's recent collection of stories, essays and pen portraits.

For episode 62 we welcome back author, magican and talismanic jeweller, Aidan Wachter. We discuss he last book Weaving Fate and Aidan's writing process, including the importance of flow and how his work is made up of broken pieces which makes sense at a later point. We talk magic as a tool for altering future probabilities and ones past through ritual and manipulation of the mind and the world. Magic and sorcery are ways of being in the world and Aidan's writing offers us his way without conditions or constraints. Aidan's work helps anchor us around the understanding that our lives are our own. That we can be our own real time biographers and we can write a better story. He also gives us a good toolkit for doing so in both of his books, Six Waysand Weaving Fate. In the Plus show we discuss ‘naming' and coming of age and the idea of ‘the feral self'. I also manage to go down a rabbit hole around my confusion with billionaire's obsession with Super Yachts. I'm not even sure how my brain got there... Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.Before the StoryI am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Some episodes will be my own stories, others will be classics that helped shape the mystery genre we know today. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes (unless it's really bad)  This is Season 2. This season contains adaptations of stories published in the 1800s. These stories are some of the first considered to be mysteries. For that reason, this season is called The Originators. Today’s story is about relentless dedication, an eye for detail, and the price of speculation. This is Desperate Times, and adaptation of The Somnambulist and the Detective, by Allan Pinkerton. Our story today was published in 1875 but took place 19 years prior in 1856. Episode Materials  Read the original: There are several places where you can find The Detective and the Somnambulist. Gutenberg is one of them. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/30636 (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/30636) Cast of Characters: Allan Pinkerton, detective George Gordon, 28, bank paying-teller, victim Thomas McGregor, 60+, bank cashier (a top position) Alexander Bannatine, 50+, president, 50, former lawyer Peter A. Gordon, 50+, vice-president, uncle of deceased John Stolz, 50+, shoemaker, one of last to see George alive John Flanders, 70+, jeweler, George’s, one of last to see him alive Alexander P. Drysdale, 40+, county clerk, George’s Walter Patterson, 30+, merchant, George’s friend Henry Caruthers, 20+ son of a wealthy planter, George’s friend My Two CentsThis mystery holds up very well. The logic is all there, the actions and reactions make sense. I suspect one of the reasons it works so well is because it is based on a true story. Pinkerton is a very good storyteller but, to an extent, he did not have to create the characters, their behavior, their motivations. He had to report them. Based on this story, Pinkerton is going to remain on the To Be Read list. There is a second half to this story that details how the Pinkerton detectives get their man. Spoiler alert: If you plan to read the story, mute us for 7 seconds. In essence, three detectives some to town and haunt Drysdale with George’s ghost, driving him to the brink of madness. Drysdale is a sleep walker and leaves his house to return to the place where he hid the money. Eventually, he confesses everything. He had invested / speculated and lost. He had his home and plantation but not the money to run them properly. He went to George for a loan. When he saw the money in the vault, his desperate times led to desperate measures. After confesses, he sends a friend to apologize to his wife and then kills himself. It is an interesting read, but we didn’t include it here because, well, Pinkerton had already solved the mystery. These stories are some of the first considered to be mysteries. For that reason, this season is called The Originators.  Today’s story is about separating the improbable from the impossible and not messing with nature. This is The Thinking Man, and adaptation of The Murders in the Rue Morgue, by Edgar Allan Poe. The story first appeared Graham’s Magazine in 1841. Episode MaterialsRead the original: There are several places where you can find The Murders in the Rue Morgue at no cost. An orangutan?? I’m not sure if I like the end or not. It feels like cheating to have a non-human murderer. Pros: original. Cons: really? An Orangutan?? Ending aside, I enjoyed Dupin and his way of figuring. If I have any complaints, it is that he didn’t share his ideas and observations with his friend, our narrator. I do concede that even if Dupin shared his findings of the window, I would not have gotten to a sailor harboring a Bornese orangutang with a penchant for shaving. This is definitely the kind of classic, logical detection that brings to mind Sherlock Holmes and the list of book, movie, and television detective that followed. What is fascinating about Dupin is he pre-dated Holms by 46 years. With so many newer incarnations of this kind of detective, it’s easy to not be overly impress by Dupin when you first read the story. When you consider he was, truly, one of the first? Well, maybe I can get over the orangutan. After the StoryThat wraps this episode of Mysteries to Die For. Support our show by telling a mystery lover about us and giving us a five-star review.
