Part of being a weekly podcast and playing the role of media in a sport means that your own athletic goals need to be put more in the background (Jason Dupree doing live streams for The OCR Report, Brakken Krakker recording and producing The Running Public, Matt B Davis heading Hybrid Fitness Media, etc.). That being said, there are still a couple challenges left that Mike has been wanting to take on in the sport of OCR. One of them being wanting to try a Spartan Ultra Beast for the past 8 years, now just called the Spartan Ultra. Katelyn wanted to do an episode interviewing Mike about his first Spartan Ultra experience, he figured that it wouldn't be nearly as interesting as him doing pit by pit coverage of her first WTM which plan to be done in June. As you can tell from the title though, he/I had my first DNF though so maybe that would be worth talking about for a bit. We are also supplementing the episode with a reRun of our 17th episode which covered Alex taking on his first Spartan Ultra Beast at the same venue in NJ back in 2017 so it's a bit of a hybrid release! What separates a wannabe investor from a true real estate investor? There are many ways out there to learn how to invest in real estate. The difference isn't due to lack of information. Why are some successful and others not? Quick story. For the last number of months, Spencer had trained and got into the best shape he could for his first ever Spartan Ultra Beast in Dallas, TX. The race consists of a 31 mile race, 60 obstacles throughout, and easily 8 to 10 hours of all out competition. At the end of October, Spencer completed the Spartan Ultra Beast. On the flight back from the race, Spencer thought about everything that went into being able to run a race like that, let alone compete. He came away with these 5 principles, all of which separate the successful from the rest of the pack: 1. Count the cost - is it worth it? 2. Everybody is running their own race 3. Doing it together is more rewarding 4. Your mind is either friend or fo - you decide 5. Obstacles are inevitable Listen in

The 2020 race season is officially underway. In this episode I introduce our brand new sponsor, Fit Bar. Fit Bar has amazing obstacle course racing, ninja warrior training, and other grip training equipment. I recently picked up one of their Beater Bars and absolutely love it. Click the link here to see all their products: http://bit.ly/2RZQije Use code OCRUNDERGROUND to save on your order. With the Spartan Race season just getting underway, I give my race recap of the first US race of the season held at Chino, CA. In addition to my recap, I shared some insight on running your own race. After an event that happened to me during the race, I had to take a step back and focus on what I had control over in the situation. Hear about how this might help you deal with situations that don't go your way. In my research review I cover a rarely talked about topic of over hydration. Most are away of the dangers of dehydration, but it is time to hear the other side of the story. Find out if you are more at risk for suffer from overhydration during some of your longer races. Plus I give some insight on how much water you should be drinking and what to consume with your water. Finally, in my interview I chat with Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Tanya Pennington. Tanya is the owner of Nurish to Thrive and has been working professionally in the fitness and nutrition industry in several capacities for 20 years. Her passion for health and wellness began in 1994 and has continued to grow. She obtained her degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science. Tanya is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner & Certified Diabetes Specialist. She opened her practice, Nourish to Thrive, where she is able to help clients from a therapeutic standpoint. She is able to address and identify imbalances in the body and intervenes with nutrition for improving overall health and wellness. In addition to running her nutrition stores and her thriving practice, you can also find Tanya regularly public speaking on the topic of nutrition. Most recently, she began teaching nutrition to the Hanford Fire Academy at the College of the Sequoias. In this interview she explains some of the common issues she comes across with dealing with nutrition and food intolerances. She explains her process of removing problematic foods from your diet and restoring proper gut health. Tanya also gets into her experience with recently completing the Spartan Ultra Beast and shares some of her insights into how to properly prep for the race. I'm very pleased to say that I COMPLETED my goal of running a 30 Mile ULTRA BEAST Spartan Race. It took me 9 hours and 25 mins. I ended up placing 10th in my age group out of 70 other guys and 44th out of a total 456 other crazy mo fo's that committed to running this race as well. The total mileage covered was actually a whopping 31.5 miles. There were two laps that you needed to take around the course. The first lap was 16 miles and then the second lap took me on a bit of a different path that was around 15.5 miles. After the first lap, I was feeling amazing. You actually stop and have a "transition" period where you can grab food, rest for a bit, change clothes, etc... I hung out for about 10 mins and hydrated as best I could then took back off for lap 2. Then the first bit of cramping started to hit. Despite being well hydrated, at about mile 21 my body was starting to break down. Cramps started to lightly come on in my quads and adductors. Then my Achilles pretty much blew up on me. I've been dealing with a slight bit of discomfort for a while with my left Achilles and on the second lap, it said NO MORE. The pain was bad, but it wasn't debilitating so I kept pushing on. NO F*CKING WAY was I quitting. Why? Because I had SAID I was going to finish and it was a COMMITMENT I made a long time ago. The amount of time and effort I put into prepping for this race wasn't going to be for nothing. The commitment I made kept running through my mind as I hit mile 26. Just 4 more miles man... you got this... I can remember at mile 21 I had a HUGE bit of doubt come over my mind. Going up and down some nasty mountainous climbs and switchbacks, the pain in my Achilles was unreal and all I could do is "trot" but again, there was NO WAY I was going to quit. If I had to hobble for the rest of the race, I was going to get it done. When I finally crossed the fit pit and walked across the finish line I couldn't have felt more fulfilled. Thinking back to when I first signed up for this I had my doubts about actually being able to do it. It was so far outta my comfort zone. The FEAR was real, but it just goes to show you that YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU COMMIT TO DOING. I say this is my "one and done" ULTRA Race, but I have a strong feeling I'll be back for another one soon. While it was one of the toughest things I've ever taken on both physically and mentally, it was FUN. We'll be having a large crew of guys from The Forged FATHER coming together next year in Big BEAR, California for our annual Forged Spartan Race weekend. We do these events because it creates more leverage and pressure for you to TAKE ACTION. It also creates more accountability for you to DO THE WORK. Had I not done the work I would have shown up to the race and got my ass whooped. In any case, there's a ULTRA scheduled for that weekend so I'll either do that or the BEAST. Good times ahead none-the-less. For now, I have to let my body heal up. I've NEVER been this sore and broken down. GO HAM!
Well I am in my taper week for my Ultra Beast, so with that extra time I have now from not running, I wanted to get out new episode for your listening pleasure. In this episode, in the Inside Mike's Mind segment, I get inside your mind. Are you your biggest limiting factor? Many people are getting in their own way. In fact I work with many clients on this topic. Here I discuss perception and how you can alter your perception for better results. In my research review I discuss a study on concurrent training. This study looks at different volumes of performing strength and running at the same time to see how they impact each other. The results may influence how you structure your training plan. And finally in our coach's interview I have on SGX Coach Brad Sims. Brad Sims has been a NASM certified personal trainer and a certified nutrition coach since 2012. He works with clients of all fitness levels and is also certified in corrective exercise training for those recovering from an injury or working with limitations in their training. Coach Brad also has been an obstacle course racing coach since 2014, training beginner athletes to competitive racers, also participating in over 50 races himself from the 5k sprint lengths to the grueling Spartan Ultra-Beast. Passionate about helping people live a healthier lifestyle thru nutrition and fitness, Coach Brad works closely with healthcare professionals as well as keeping up on the most up to date health and fitness information in order to bring you the most current and cutting edge methods to help you reach your goals. When Anne Champagne crossed the finish line at the Spartan Stoneham Ultra Beast she made history. Not only did Champagne win the race for women she beat all the men by over 45 minutes. I checked with Spartan HQ to confirm my suspicion that Anne was the first woman in the race company history to outright win an Ultra Beast. Spartan confirmed that she was the first women to ever accomplish this feat and that only one other time in the companies history had a woman outright won a Spartan of any distance but that race was not an Ultra Beast according to Spartan HQ. Champagne joins the podcast to talk about the race, how she feels making Spartan history, and a little bit about her life, training and more. Champagne joined me via a Skype call from her home in Quebec, Canada to talk about it all just days after she won the race. Champagne has been an obstacle course racer for years and frequently finds herself on podiums in both Canada and the United States.

The team members who don the mask are members of the Masked Athlete Team (MAT). These members have gone through a rigorous selection process known as Warrior INDOC. This in-depth process is composed of several phases of personal, professional and physical analysis, fundraising abilities, and teamwork assessment. The final phase is a 48-hour physical and mental endurance component during which candidates complete a series of challenges under the close supervision of selected team members. Candidates who successfully complete this stage may then be invited to join the ranks of the Team. Completion rate from start to finish is often times less than 20%. We also rely heavily on our OEW Community Ambassadors (OCAs). These are selfless men and women who have chosen to take up the banner of our cause to honor, empower and motivate wounded veterans. They accomplish this by fundraising on behalf of the team, arranging social events, and participating in a wide variety of athletic events in our branded gear (gas masks not allowed). Often these athletes will run alongside the MAT at events. The OCA members are invaluable to the success of our mission. Become an OEW Community Ambassador (OCA) Our Community Ambassadors (OCAs) are volunteer supporters who wish to assist in raising awareness and donations for OEW through spreading the word, participating in local community events wearing OEW branded gear, and promoting our cause through social media outlets. The OCA program was established to give everyone across the country the opportunity to personally support our nation’s wounded service members and their families. While only our Masked Athlete Team assist our wounded veterans at athletic events, all of our OCAs can assist in the community! About Jonathan Lopez Previous to 2000, Jonathan was a highly-motivated infantry soldier on a successful career trajectory. He had completed Airborne training, the Ranger Indoctrination program and trained abroad with the Belgium Commandos. He deployed with the first infantry division and had just attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection – when the universe decided it had other plans for him. While he does not have much in the way of actual memory of the accident itself, he was told that he had been hit by a drunk driver while on his motorcycle. He has a vague memory of laying on the pavement, a helicopter, doctors speaking in German desperately working on him and the plane ride leading to his arrival at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. He was told he had suffered multiple injuries, including the loss and subsequent amputation of his left arm. Jonathan was subjected to many surgeries the first couple of months to replace his tibia and femur with titanium rods and multiple bone grafts. The loss of his arm was overshadowed by the overwhelming concern of never being able to walk again. Jonathan Lopez was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 2001 following the amputation of his left arm. But having one arm hasn't stopped Lopez from competing in Spartan races and even climbing a 30-foot rope. With the help of Operation Enduring Warrior, a veterans charity that helps "facilitate the physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation of our nation's wounded service," Lopez has been able to participate in Spartan races, even in spite of his disability. About Earl Granville A nine-year veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as an infantryman, Granville served in support of Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In the summer of 2008, while on patrol in Zormat, Afghanistan, his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, resulting in the amputation of his left leg through his knee. His comrades, Specialist Derek Holland, of Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, and Major Scott Haggerty, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, were killed in action. In December 2010, Granville suffered the loss of his twin brother, Staff Sergeant Joseph Granville, who took his own life. Today, Granville speaks publicly about the importance of finding professional help when coping with mental distress, particularly for members of the military who have served in combat. In addition to speaking engagements, Granville competes in adaptive sports, including monoski, sled hockey and in GoRuck Endurance Challenges and Spartan Races. He has competed in numerous marathons across the county on a hand bicycle, including the Marine Corps Marathon and races in Boston, Detroit, Chicago and New York. He ran two half marathons alongside Operation Enduring Warrior is a finisher of the 2016 Bataan Death Memorial March; and completed the Spartan Agoge, a 60-hour endurance event. He is a team member of Operation Enduring Warrior, a non-profit organization managed by veterans, and he is the lead ambassador of Oscar Mike, an American-made apparel company founded by veterans. This week's guest represents everything the Like a Bigfoot Podcast strives to showcase. Grit, determination, intelligent training, and pushing through devastating obstacles to ultimately achieve greatness. I met Miguel Medina last January during a 50k "fatass" training run from Nederland to Boulder. While running together I instantly realized a few things: Miguel is fast....I mean FAST and he is very intentional with his training, mobility, and recovery. I felt so lucky to spend a few hours picking his brain about living life as a pure well-rounded athlete. I should probably mention he's an elite ultra obstacle course racer who has numerous podium finishers in a wide variety of obstacle course races and in 2014 his team won the World's Toughest Mudder (with Mark Jones, Hunter Mcintyre, and Dennis Wayne Welch). In other words, he's one of the best athletes I've ever had the pleasure of running with. In this episode Miguel shares his story from "Gamer" with chronic back pain to elite athlete. It's intense, raw and is one of the most inspiring stories we've shared on this podcast. I'm so grateful to hear his story and to be able to share it with you! We also chat about how awesome it is to live and train in Durango, Colorado, strategies to manage emotions during team events, positivity and gratitude during intense races, and his current experience racing the Toughest Mudder Midwest. Miguel just placed 5th in the Toughest Mudder Midwest in which he completed 45 miles of obstacles in 7 hours and 50 minutes (which is INSANELY FAST). He is currently running through the San Juans preparing for the Spartan Ultra Beast in October and the Worlds Toughest Mudder in November (with his teammate Mark Jones). Enjoy.
Huge Spartan weekend! Alex pits himself against the infamous Ultra Beast in Vernon New Jersey, listen to hear how his training pays off! Shon, Angela, and Jimmie drove down from Maine and New Hampshire to complete the Beast which is half of the Ultra Beast but still a fantastic challenge with about 13-14 miles up and down the mountain with about 32 obstacles. It was Shon's first Beast and he is now a third of the way to earning his first Spartan Trifecta! Angela and Jimmie returned to Mountain Creek on Sunday to complete the course again and are starting to work towards their insane goal of 5 Spartan Trifectas! (See www.SoTHISIsFitness.com/podcast30 for extended show notes/blog) There are more ways to triumph than weight loss. There's a concept in the fitness world, which I have talked about many times... called "non-scale victories". Often times the scale might not move as much as we'd like and we get discouraged. Times like those it's important to celebrate the non-scale victories, like "hey, that shirt fits great now!" or "I finished a 5K!" or "wow, I just finished the Spartan Ultra Beast at Mt. Killington!" Ok... some people are more extreme than others. My guest for Episode 30 of the podcast is a True Triumph in all senses of the word. This guy took charge, picked himself up out of a situation that was hazardous to his health, and got it together. First... for his kids... then... for himself... and after that? Well... now he's shepherding his crew towards THEIR big non-scale victory. Mike is the kind of guy we should all strive to be. Check out his story, share it with a friend, and let's show the world how to #LiveLifeLimitless! We speak with Alex Sawicki, an elite OCR athlete who recently placed first in back-to-back Spartan Ultra Beast and Super races in Hawaii. We talk about those wins, why she loves the steep courses and the rush of downhill running, and the mental strength required to run these races with a competitive edge.
All OCR athletes agree, it eventually comes down to the ability to run. Miguel Medina took second at The Spartan Ultra Beast World Championships in 2015 and was a team member of “The Wolf Pack” winners of the 2014 World's Toughest Mudder. Suffice to say he knows how important having keen running skills are to success in Spartan Racing. Join us as Miguel Medina and I (Richard Diaz) field some questions from OCR athletes from around the country regarding running skills. We also close with a contest for those who register early for the upcoming OCR Run Clinic to be held in Ft Collins Colorado in June this year. In this episode I talk to Morgan McKay who was the women's winner for the first BFX24. We talk about how she was able to complete 75 miles in that race, how she was able to train and win a Spartan Ultra Beast and place in the top 10 at the Worlds Toughest Mudder.
This show will be jam packed with information on everything you need to know about obstacle course racing. Michelle Roy is a trail and ultra runner. She finished 2nd at the winter Spartan Death Race in 2011 and also holds the record for the Peak 500 race, running 400 miles which is the current female record. Michelle has over 200 ultra race finishes under her belt and just so much knowledge to share. Kenneth 'Hulk' Terrell entered the fitness industry about 4 years ago. Determined to change his life he dropped 85 pounds, put on muscle, changed his career from a lawyer to personal trainer and is now a competitive obstacle course racer. He is a P4P sponsored athlete and most recently competed in the Spartan Ultra Beast at Killington Vermont. If you are interested in anything from trail racing to competitive OCR, than listen in because we will be discussing it all including their training and nutrition!
In all recreational and competitive running events from your first 5K to a marathon or Spartan Ultra Beast, athletes tend to get injured. Generally injuries come about when the weekly mileage increases along with the intensity. Our host Richard Diaz, founder of diaz human performance and The Natural Running Network, has a long history of training runners to perform optimally with his unique approach to what he refers to as “Motor Skill Drills”. Diaz feels that the key to running fast and avoiding injuries is directly tied to the way you run not how much or how hard you run. Before you blame your running shoes for your last injury, you should listen to this episode.
