Marcos Orozco was born and raised in Texas and became passionate about fitness at the age of 12 when his Dad bought him his first gym membership.  He played sports throughout high school and ran track for ASU (400m and 4x400m relay) where he got a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science/Kinesiology.   Marcos has been a career fireman for 17 years and has been training and working out in gear for about 15 + of those years.   His passion for fitness as it relates to performance on the fire ground is what he is passionate about and what he is best known for.  He has spent the past decade plus training “tactical athletes” and helping them become the best version of themselves, making them an asset rather than a liability.   Marcos is the owner of Hardknox Sunday where he has programs designed to help firefighters improve their fitness as it relates to performance on the fire ground.  He is a big believer in “you are either an asset or a liability, there is no in between.” Marcos is co-founder of The Crucible with John Spera and Logan Broberg.  The Crucible is a 24hr class where the participants will do 12 in full-gear workouts over that 24hr period where a standard must be met under the required time frame.  This class is meant to help build that mental fortitude and resiliency, and to share with the participants what has worked for us, the cadre.  We will be focusing on building the participants up and helping them work through those dark moments.  In addition, The cadre will be doing the workouts with the participants, and embracing the shared suffering.   Marcos is also co-owner of True Grit Training, where they provide realistic “live fire” trainings as well as RIT and Search and Rescue classes in the Denver metropolitan area.     Marcos has been an instructor for over 11 years and travels all over the country teaching HOT classes and giving his lecture “Improving fire ground performance through fitness and mental fortitude” as well as being on several podcasts in the last couple of years. @hardknoxsunday Sponsorship: @southwest_fire_academy Editing: @bradshea Marketing: @m.pletz Administration: @haileygreenfitness Partnership: @firefighternationhq Mid-roll Sponsor - @firehumorcompany Some of his fire conferences include:     Ft Lauderdale Fire Expo (Ft Lauderdale, FL) Fire Shows West (Reno, NV) FDIC (Indianapolis, IN) The Castillo Way, (Houston, TX) Mile High Fire Conference (Denver, CO) Mid America Fools OKC Conference (OKC, OK).   Some of his podcasts include:   Behind The Shield Podcast Tailboard Misfits Podcast Fit to Fight Fire Podcast Student of the Game Podcast Undisclosed Agents Podcast The Sheepdog Society Podcast   Some of his “HARD” accomplishes include completing the Dunes 100-mile Ultra Race (2019-FL), completing the Georgia Smoke Diver Program at age 45 (2022-GA), running Pikes Peak Ascent (13.3 miles up to 14,115ft of elevation) in bunker coat/pants (2023-CO), and completing OBT 6 (2024-FL). Challenging himself and others is what Marcos is passionate about, and he enjoys showing others what is possible. Marcos moved from South Florida to Colorado in January of 2023 and has been working for Brighton Fire District where he was in the Training Division for all of 2024 teaching at The North Area Fire Academy (NAFA 14 & 15), sharing his knowledge and passion. Marcos believes you must do HARD things you do not want to do daily; you are only as good as what you are currently doing, and what are you currently doing to make people around you better.   “It is our responsibility to show them what is possible.”

It's Anchor Down Week baby and we have the man with the vision, Anchor Down Ultra Race director, Jay Paganelli!Jay shares his journey into race directing and the birth of Anchor Down. The race started in 2015 and was designed to be a challenging and authentic ultra race. Jay wanted to create an event that turned off most runners and tested their limits. The race takes place in Colt State Park, Rhode Island, and offers 6, 12, and 24-hour options. The goal was to create a race that honored the tradition of ultra running and fostered a sense of camaraderie among participants. Jay's passion for the running community and his dedication to creating authentic and challenging races shines through in Anchor Down Ultra. Anchor Down is  also known for its epic aid station and high-quality volunteers like Juice Box Guy. Jay, and his dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to create a memorable experience for the runners. The budget for the event is extensive, as it involves securing a state park, paying staff and subcontractors, and obtaining insurance. The race has strict qualification standards to ensure that participants are committed and passionate about being a part of the Anchor Down community. Anchor Down Ultra (ADU) has a preferred entry path that guarantees entry to those who make the effort to qualify and contribute to the ultrarunning community. The race also offers standard entry and an application process for special cases. ADU is known for its authentic and challenging nature, with a start time of 7pm to create a unique experience of running through the night. The race has a cult-like community and attracts elite runners who compete alongside recreational runners. The event has a low-key atmosphere with minimal advertising. In this final part of the conversation, Jay and Erika discuss the upcoming Anchor Down Ultra and share some insights and advice for runners. They talk about the importance of preparation and training for specific race conditions, as well as embracing the challenges and difficulties that come with ultra running. Jay also shares some funny anecdotes about previous races and the unique experiences at Anchor Down. Hey, everyone! We're back with another exciting episode of the Gotta Run Podcast. It's been a busy two weeks in the world of Gotta Run Racing, and we're thrilled to bring you all the action from the Sulphur Springs Trail Race, Canada's oldest ultra, which was vying for a Western States 100 qualifier. We kicked things off with a recap of our Lost Treasure Trail Race in Mansfield, which went off without a hitch. Then, we headed to Ancaster, Ontario, to witness history in the making at Sulphur Springs Trail Race. With over 250 runners in both the 100K and 100-mile races, the stakes were high, trying to be the first Ultra Race in Ontario to be a Western States 100 qualifier and the atmosphere was electric. In this episode, we bring you interviews with top finishers, and many enthusiastic participants. You'll hear firsthand accounts of the race, the challenges faced, and the incredible stories of determination and triumph. From the youngest finishers to seasoned ultra veterans, every runner had a unique tale to tell. We also delve into the Canadian favourite butter tart debate—raisins or no raisins? And explore the community spirit that makes trail running so special. Despite the crazy weather, including torrential rain and muddy trails, the runners' resilience shone through, making this event truly unforgettable. Join us as we celebrate the incredible achievements at Sulphur Springs and look ahead to our upcoming adventures, including our races at Rainbow Trail Run and Island Lake Classic. Don't miss out on this epic episode filled with inspiration, laughter, and the pure joy of trail running.

A grand prize for a record breaking finish in a South Island ultra marathon has sparked an even bigger international debate about sexism. Organisers of the South Island Ultra race offered a $10,000 cash prize to the first person to break 8 hours in the 100km race along the west coast wilderness track, starting in Greymouth and ending in Hokitika. A backlash followed with critics claiming the cash prize overwhelmingly favours men who are more likely than women to make the 8 hour goal. Organisers have since changed the prize pool. John and Carol Moore run the events company behind the race - CJM'S Events - John talks to Lisa Owen.

The three worst letters in the ultra world are DNF, all because they stand for “Did Not Finish” and mark the incompletion of a race that you probably worked hard to train for. DNF's are painful. There is no way around it. Especially after you likely put in tons of time and energy to prepare for your race, only to have it not go the way that you intended. So, in this episode, I share tons of tips to help you prevent a DNF in your next race as best as you possibly can, based on my experience of finishing tons of ultras. But since I have also dealt with a DNF in the past, I share from my mistakes as well. And if you are currently dealing with a DNF, I totally get it. And that is why I included some tips on how to deal with and bounce back from a DNF so you can get back on the path to redemption in your next ultra. Irishman Keith Russell claimed second place in the gruelling Race of Champions Backyard Masters in Germany. The race began last Saturday morning and participants had to complete a 6.7km lap every hour, running it as fast or as slow as they wanted, while ensuring they were back at the start line on the hour mark to go again. Any runner who failed to finish a lap recorded a DNF (did not finish). In the early hours of this morning, Russell's race came to an end at 89 laps, covering an astonishing 597km in 66 hours, 14 minutes and 22 seconds. Russell started running in 2016 with his daughter Alanna, who had spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, and ran the 2017 Dublin marathon, pushing Alanna in a special running chair. The pair raised more than €60,000 for the Meadow's Children's Respite Centre in Navan, but tragically, Alanna passed away six weeks after the marathon. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johnoregan777/message
