Provoker is a melancholic post punk band out of Los Angeles, California. Their music is synth-forward, moody, and contains a “deep sadness, escapism, and idealism” as described by their vocalist Christian Petty. Originally founded by guitarist Jonathan Lopez as an exploration in film composition, a chance meeting with Petty at a horror movie screening has transformed the band into the addicting rhythmic yearning woven into their sound today. Jonathan Lopez, Ed.D - aka "Dr. J-Lo" joins me on this episode to cover the role of the Third Party Administrator from a different perspective than covered previously. He views the role of the TPA as the "Adjudicator", and explains what he means using a sweet "John Wick" analogy! Jonathan has an interesting story, having gotten his undergrad degree in Kinesiology, then attending OCS with the Marine Corps, before going back to complete his Doctorate in Education Leadership. Oh, and he also used to own a Crossfit Gym! Not the typical path towards being an RVP of sales for a TPA...but that is the beauty of the insurance industry. There is no correct path to get in, and once you are in, you can find what interests you to carve out your own path. *Correction* - 78% of hospitalizations due to Covid were overweight/obese - not 94%. The 94% statistic was in reference to the percentage of Covid deaths that had comorbidities". --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/spencer-harlan-smith/support

I talk to Jonathan Lopez about writing a racist letter and claiming it was from an anonymous source. I interviewed Lopez awhile back when he was running for an Umatilla County Commissioner position. Click here to read a local article about the incident. Below is Lopez's apology letter: July 8 Esteemed Umatilla county commissioners, leaders, representatives, law enforcement, community members, and all residents! With the most deepest sincerity of what's left of my heart and life. I would like to apologize for my wrongful doings. The letter written by me came from a dark low place. It should have never been written. My intentions were to speak with our communities leadership and discuss the issues that members of the community do face. In my moment of weakness and desperation I wrote the letter to use that as an example to speak with officials. It soon quickly turned into a police report and then an investigation. I had no intentions of filing a report in regards to the letter but then this moment turned into a place of deceit. I would like to apologize to all through and throughout the county of Umatilla and the nation. I apologize for my actions that I have confessed of doing. I apologize for any hurt and pain I have caused. I apologize for any struggles and displeasure in any community. I apologize to any public service member and leadership, as it is not an easy task to lead multitudes of people with different beliefs, thoughts, and opinions. Making the decision for many lives is a hard task in which regardless of the final choice made someone is still unhappy, unsatisfied, and unserved. I apologize to every single person of the community in which I do strongly desire to be thriving and successful. I apologize to the congregation I once belonged to as I had resigned my position and place back in April. I apologize to my wife whom I've doing the most wrong by not sharing and speaking up or out about my life and feelings. I have kept so much bottled up Inside feeling the full weight of the world on my shoulders. Feeling alone and out of place many time's here in my own community. I accept and acknowledge I was not suited or fit to be in public office or leadership. I have been dealing with many emotions, feelings, and thoughts for several months which I tried so hard to hide behind a smile and a lie saying everything is okay we're going to fix this. Anxiety, depression, loneliness, anger, bitterness, thoughts of unworthiness and failure fill my life long before my campaign but I pushed to get past them telling myself it's all going to be alright. My health condition did not aid any of my thoughts and feelings. I once again do ask for forgiveness and apologize for my actions and wrongful doing. I once confided in God and called him my rock. With time I lost track of that and steered away from him. I can only seek and ask him for His forgiveness once again and mend that relationship we had in due time. I'm a still having the hardest time cooping with all that is happening. This covid has also affected my life and family with its effects. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and economically. It has affected my health and my family. It has brought loneliness and depression, it has brought pain and economic issues as to my wife's hard working business had to be closed for the safety of others. I know I am only but one man, but one man who can try and hope to come to a place of peace and compassion. I do with my most sincerity regret that letter and actions. I do encourage the community to work strongly and united to overcome the obstacles that are still ahead of all. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/youngrepublicansoforegon/message

In 1911, the Mona Lisa disappeared from the Louvre. After an extensive investigation it made a surprising reappearance that inspired headlines around the world. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the painting's abduction, which has been called the greatest art theft of the 20th century. We'll also shake Seattle and puzzle over a fortunate lack of work. Intro: A hard-boiled egg will stand when spun. What's the largest sofa one can squeeze around a corner? Jonathan Lopez shares his personal testimony and explains how God has proved himself to be present even through challenging times.
At 17 Jonathan joined the United States Army. He attended Airborne school and the Ranger Indoctrination Program. He became part of a sniper unit with the first infantry division. He deployed to Europe after basic training. Once there he attended Belgium Commando School and SFAS, Special Forces Assessment and selection. At 20 years old, while stationed in Germany, he was hit by a drunk driver, his injuries were so severe that his left arm had to be amputated and he was told by doctors he may never walk again. Shortly after, he was honorably discharged from the US Army. He felt out of place in his new civilian life and had a hard time identifying with other wounded veterans, who were combat wounded. And after quite some time overcoming his demons, he found himself on a new journey. He became involved in outdoor training activities that consisted of kayaking, diving, cave exploration and much more. In 2015, along with his service dog Zoe, he began participating in Obstacle Course Races for his own physical and mental growth. Since then he has completed numerous Spartan races, mud runs and rucks. He volunteers with Operation Enduring Warrior a veteran run organization, that helps wounded veterans obtain their physical goals and overcome their challenges. He also volunteers at Homestead Air Reserve Base, helping veterans and their families transition into the civilian world with benefits and healthcare services. He also volunteers with Achilles Freedom Team and the Miami VA. He has become an advocate for eliminating opioid dependence in the military and finding alternative ways to help overcome depression and PTSD. He lives by the motto “DIE FIRST, THEN QUIT!”
There are many adversities we face in life. Some of outward-facing while many are scars we carry on the insides of our hearts. Today's guest can speak to both. Jonathan Lopez is an Army Infantry veteran + member of Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW). OEW is a veteran-founded non‐profit whose mission is to honor, empower, and motivate our nation’s wounded military and law enforcement veterans through physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation. Jonathan joins us for a raw, emotional and honest conversation about serving our country, learning how to accept unexpected circumstances + challenges in life and inspiring others to do the same. (Thank you to Live Inspired community member Martina for sharing her special relationship Jonathan, his connection her late son Thomas + the work OEW is doing in our communities. Share your guest recommendations with us at podcast@johnolearyinspires.com) SHOW NOTES: According to the 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, more than 16 United States veterans die by suicide every day. At 17 years old, Jonathan joined the Army seeking brotherhood + community, something that was lacking in his life. During Special Forces Training, Jonathan realized the community he always sought was already in the barracks + quit. Days later, Jonathan was involved with a head-on motorcycle accident that resulted in 17 fractures in his left leg, broke every rib on his left side + the amputation of his left arm. Finding peace: "Not too long ago, I let go. It was one of the most liberating things." Jonathan's focus + determination on rehabilitating his leg helped him cope with the loss of his arm. Unleashing a monster: While rehabilitating his leg, Jonathan became addicted to opioids, which eventually led to a suicide attempt. "Figuring out how to do things with one hand is not that complicated. Mental rehabilitation is hard." Redemption: During induction to Operation Enduring Warrior's Masked Athlete Team, Jonathan's mentor Jeff Farmer presented an opportunity for redemption. "Face your obstacles, smile + get it over with." Jonathan attempted suicide not wanting his children to grow up with a "deadbeat father". Today, he's choosing to live because of his kids. Learn more about Operation Enduring Warrior here. If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My grandmother. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My grandmother taught me to plant a tree, write a book and have children. My friend Scott encourages me to leave my footprints to guide others. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Just move! That’s the bottom line for these three members of Oscar Mike and Operation Enduring Warrior, both organizations designed to get wounded veterans on the move! “Oscar Mike” means “on the move” in military parlance. These three adaptive Spartans, Jonathan Lopez, Noah Currier, and Earl Granville, have sought out the race as a way of eradicating any perception that they are victims. They are, instead, comrades in the human wide struggle to help one another excel at life. According to one of the athletes the greatest thing he witnessed during the race was not the elite athletes crushing the course or even adaptive athletes and veterans doing the improbable; it was seeing someone fall down face first and be picked up by his teammates, showing that Spartans fall, bleed and find the strength to go on, “just like us.” Lessons: 1. Seek out the obstacle, the struggle, for the valuable lessons it can teach you. 2. More or less visibly, we’re all adapting to and trying to overcome something. 3. Accomplishment and happiness can be dependent on finding a strong community. The team members who don the mask are members of the Masked Athlete Team (MAT). These members have gone through a rigorous selection process known as Warrior INDOC. This in-depth process is composed of several phases of personal, professional and physical analysis, fundraising abilities, and teamwork assessment. The final phase is a 48-hour physical and mental endurance component during which candidates complete a series of challenges under the close supervision of selected team members. Candidates who successfully complete this stage may then be invited to join the ranks of the Team. Completion rate from start to finish is often times less than 20%. We also rely heavily on our OEW Community Ambassadors (OCAs). These are selfless men and women who have chosen to take up the banner of our cause to honor, empower and motivate wounded veterans. They accomplish this by fundraising on behalf of the team, arranging social events, and participating in a wide variety of athletic events in our branded gear (gas masks not allowed). Often these athletes will run alongside the MAT at events. The OCA members are invaluable to the success of our mission. Become an OEW Community Ambassador (OCA) Our Community Ambassadors (OCAs) are volunteer supporters who wish to assist in raising awareness and donations for OEW through spreading the word, participating in local community events wearing OEW branded gear, and promoting our cause through social media outlets. The OCA program was established to give everyone across the country the opportunity to personally support our nation’s wounded service members and their families. While only our Masked Athlete Team assist our wounded veterans at athletic events, all of our OCAs can assist in the community! Whether you are participating in your first event, or are a seasoned athlete, or are acting as a volunteer in one of many ways, your efforts can make a difference in the quality of life for our wounded service members! Check our Facebook page for updates and events where the OEW Team calls all existing and aspiring Community Ambassadors to join us in our mission to, “Honor, Empower and Motivate” our nation’s wounded service members. About Jonathan Lopez Previous to 2000, Jonathan was a highly-motivated infantry soldier on a successful career trajectory. He had completed Airborne training, the Ranger Indoctrination program and trained abroad with the Belgium Commandos. He deployed with the first infantry division and had just attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection – when the universe decided it had other plans for him. While he does not have much in the way of actual memory of the accident itself, he was told that he had been hit by a drunk driver while on his motorcycle. He has a vague memory of laying on the pavement, a helicopter, doctors speaking in German desperately working on him and the plane ride leading to his arrival at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. He was told he had suffered multiple injuries, including the loss and subsequent amputation of his left arm. Jonathan was subjected to many surgeries the first couple of months to replace his tibia and femur with titanium rods and multiple bone grafts. The loss of his arm was overshadowed by the overwhelming concern of never being able to walk again. Jonathan Lopez was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 2001 following the amputation of his left arm. But having one arm hasn't stopped Lopez from competing in Spartan races and even climbing a 30-foot rope. With the help of Operation Enduring Warrior, a veterans charity that helps "facilitate the physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation of our nation's wounded service," Lopez has been able to participate in Spartan races, even in spite of his disability. About Earl Granville A nine-year veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as an infantryman, Granville served in support of Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In the summer of 2008, while on patrol in Zormat, Afghanistan, his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, resulting in the amputation of his left leg through his knee. His comrades, Specialist Derek Holland, of Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, and Major Scott Haggerty, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, were killed in action. In December 2010, Granville suffered the loss of his twin brother, Staff Sergeant Joseph Granville, who took his own life. Today, Granville speaks publicly about the importance of finding professional help when coping with mental distress, particularly for members of the military who have served in combat. In addition to speaking engagements, Granville competes in adaptive sports, including monoski, sled hockey and in GoRuck Endurance Challenges and Spartan Races. He has competed in numerous marathons across the county on a hand bicycle, including the Marine Corps Marathon and races in Boston, Detroit, Chicago and New York. He ran two half marathons alongside Operation Enduring Warrior is a finisher of the 2016 Bataan Death Memorial March; and completed the Spartan Agoge, a 60-hour endurance event. He is a team member of Operation Enduring Warrior, a non-profit organization managed by veterans, and he is the lead ambassador of Oscar Mike, an American-made apparel company founded by veterans. When critics dismissed his paintings, Dutch artist Han van Meegeren decided to seek his revenge on the art world: He devoted himself to forgery and spent six years fabricating a Vermeer masterpiece. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast, we'll recount the career of a master forger and the surprising mistake that eventually brought him down. We'll also drop in on D.B. Cooper and puzzle over an eyeless fruit burglar. Intro: In 1976, the New York Times accidentally dated an issue "March 10, 1075." Is there anything better than the story of a master forger? If there is, I don't know it. This time we take a trip to the realm of non-fiction, looking into the complex world of Han Van Meegeren, a forger working in the style of Frans Hals and, especially, Johannes Vermeer, who sold his work to Hermann Goering, then tried to convince the world it was in the name of patriotism.
