Two Saturday's ago, I ran a Spartan Beast race. I quickly found out that it was a fight just to finish. It beat me down and I needed to use this mindset just to finish. Move forward over and over again, even when it hurts. Check out the story now.
Part of being a weekly podcast and playing the role of media in a sport means that your own athletic goals need to be put more in the background (Jason Dupree doing live streams for The OCR Report, Brakken Krakker recording and producing The Running Public, Matt B Davis heading Hybrid Fitness Media, etc.). That being said, there are still a couple challenges left that Mike has been wanting to take on in the sport of OCR. One of them being wanting to try a Spartan Ultra Beast for the past 8 years, now just called the Spartan Ultra. Katelyn wanted to do an episode interviewing Mike about his first Spartan Ultra experience, he figured that it wouldn't be nearly as interesting as him doing pit by pit coverage of her first WTM which plan to be done in June. As you can tell from the title though, he/I had my first DNF though so maybe that would be worth talking about for a bit. We are also supplementing the episode with a reRun of our 17th episode which covered Alex taking on his first Spartan Ultra Beast at the same venue in NJ back in 2017 so it's a bit of a hybrid release! Welcome to another edition of the OCR Underground Show. Your best training resource for Obstacle Course Racing. I am getting ready to head up to San Luis Obispo this weekend for the Spartan Beast. In fact I am teaching the OS course on Friday 11/1. If you are in the area and want to come play on the obstacles click here to register. In this episode I share some information on creatine. Creatine is one of the most studied supplements on the market. Yet there is still a ton of misconceptions and misinformation on the product. Unfortunately many companies using marketing tactics to make their brand seem more effective. Is it all true? I share some great resources to help you understand what exactly you should be concerned with or not when taking creatine. Recently I had to overcome a significant muscle injury. It came up in the middle of my Beast training which was not ideal. Luckily I did a few things to help me bounce back as quickly as possible. I didn't even have to miss a softball game which was great. While recovering from any injury takes time, there are things we can do to control how long that time is. In this episode I share my strategy that helped me overcome this injury and get back to my training in just a few weeks. Enjoy the show! Stijn Lagrand is on a hot streak lately. He and his team won $40,000 in the Alula 8 hour race back in February. He then took first at the Spartan Beast in Zandvoort, and most recently took home the short course and the long course wins at the OCR Euro Champs in Hungary. We'll chat about those events plus his thoughts on race rules and how strict marshalling can be frustrating for athletes. Plus, we'll talk the idea of letting athletes practice obstacles beforehand and how that could make races fairer and more exciting. We'll also touch on possibly competing in the Trifecta World Championships and seeing how he does against the best Spartan racers in the world. Then I am rejoined by Bryan from House Darling for a deeper dive into S2 E6 of House of the Dragon and House That Dragons Built. On today's episode, I want to share the details of the Spartan Beast obstacle course I ran at the start of September. It took place on Mount Killington in Vermont (a very steep ski mountain) and is considered the hardest of the Spartan races worldwide, resembling an outdoor Ninja Warrior course with hanging obstacles. This was my first time back running a Spartan race after I fell during one last year and blew out my knee, after which a doctor said I needed surgery, and I refused in favor of doing my own rehab. That same doctor told me I'd never run another Spartan race if I didn't get the surgery, which I, of course, took as a challenge, so running this race was a validation of my choices. And I got that validation in the best way, managing to have fun, enjoy the community, and run a clean race (i.e. without missing an obstacle), something not many people manage! Speaking of challenging myself, this summer, I did the 75 Hard Challenge, a mental toughness program that involves hydration, working out, reading, and sticking to clean eating. This was a hard, monotonous program, but it taught me some really important lessons, including how to identify self-sabotaging behavior and stop letting yourself down. It also helped me to realize how often my choices aren't aligned with my goals and that I can reach those goals more easily by choosing to do a little more instead of going easy on myself. That's a lesson that can apply to parenting and other areas of life: showing up consistently and not paying attention to the internal urge to backslide will pay huge dividends. And for me, the goal is to maintain my health and strength, not by making my life longer but by making sure I can live in my body with joy and vitality for as long as possible. The Finer Details of This Episode: Running the Spartan Beast on Mount Killington Taking joy in what our bodies can do Running a clean race Deciding to stop disappointing ourselves Aging with joy and vibrancy Quotes: “He said, ‘Just so you know, you'll never run another Spartan Race unless you get surgery.' I think you guys know me well enough by now to know that that was like, hold my electrolyte water. Because I'll be back with a medal.” “One of the best parts was, I bring magnesium spray for cramping. And guys cramp more often than women because they have thicker muscle mass. So every time I crested a ridge, there would be a group of guys feverishly rubbing their quads and their calves. And so I got to be, like, the magnesium-spray fairy.” “I saw so many people sort of immersed in the suckage of the race. It's a brutal race. And I just kept looking around me, and I was like, I get to do this. My body is so amazing, I get to do this, this is crazy. You know, sometimes people at my age are couch-bound, on medicines, and I said, God, I was so, like, in love with my body.” “I had a chance to run a clean race, which means you don't miss any of the obstacles, which is not that common. And I did, I ran a clean race, and I was so proud of myself. I was like, doing leprechaun leaps, and the rest of the race was effortless for me because I was like, wait a minute, I can run a clean race now.” “My brother said to me, ‘You know, we're all gonna die someday,' and I was like, I don't care if I die tomorrow, I want to live in my body with joy and vitality and health as long as I can. I'm not trying to make my life longer, I want my life to be healthy.” Links: Jamie's Homepage - www.jamieglowacki.com Oh Crap! Get ready for a very positive and enthusiastic guest, Dave Sherwin—a longtime promoter of health, weight loss, vitality and peak performance. Dave is a lifelong golfer and former competitive basketball player who has done incredible competitions like Spartan Beast (which he completed in four hours!) and is blazing that trail in his 50s for continued peak performance and vitality. A dedicated practitioner of mindfulness and meditation, Dave also has a program called the “Dirobi UnDiet”, which is a strategy to lose weight away from the tired and often criticized methods of crash dieting, eating less and exercising more, etc.—in short, a more mindful approach to weight loss. He also has a cool program involving supplements, shares a lot of free, great advice on his website, and hosts a fantastic health podcast, which I'll be making an appearance on soon, so stay tuned for that! In this episode, we have a lively conversation about pursuing athletic goals and making age appropriate adjustments to your regimen and goal setting so that your pursuits can align with your health and longevity, rather than compromise them—which is unfortunately common and easy to let happen when you have that misplaced competitive intensity and you're getting older, but thinking that you're still younger, so you keep doing some of the more extreme stuff that really is more of a young person's game. Instead, we want to modify and recalibrate but still keep that competitive edge going. Enjoy this motivating and inspiring conversation with Dave Sherwin and stay tuned for my appearance on the Dirobi Health show! TIMESTAMPS: With today's guest, Brad will explore making age-appropriate adjustments with your athletic goals. [01:15] Golf can be more exercise than you think, of course, if you walk, instead of ride in a cart. [05:10] The young child being introduced to sports can be transformative in helping them becoming a better person with teamwork, and developing the confidence to develop into a real healthy athlete. [10:46] Around age 40, you may have to rethink your exercise protocol…..even become an endurance athlete. [15:11] Achieving something in health and fitness can have a profound impact on your life. [21:10] Get a buddy to do things with helps. You don't have to go into competition. [23:54] Keeping muscle strength up is a critical part of longevity. CrossFit is one way to get the entire body fit. [26:46] You are headed for wheelchairs by default in today's world, if you are not doing something about it. Mobility, strength, flexibility, endurance, great nutrition together is your goal. [34:17] When you eat and how you eat is actually the first thing to adjust before we talk about what you eat. [38:41] Getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep is what most sleep experts recommend. [42:52] Niche diets are not the best way to look at this. Make sure the carbs you are eating are healthy. [51:53] It is normal to have a treat on occasion. The trouble is, in our society, we have too many treats. [59:06] When purchasing chocolate, if you spend under $3.00, you are supporting child labor and poorly produced products. You should expect to pay around $3.00 or more per ounce. IN THIS EPISODE… Joe sits down with his wife Heather Chura, and two of his friends, Jon Rieckmann (first-place finisher in his age division & eighth overall), and Bruce Etzcorn. These are a couple of the people from his crew that competed in the Spartan Ultra and Spartan Beast challenges in Lake Tahoe. For those of you who aren't familiar with this event, the Spartan Ultra merges the sport of obstacle course racing along with 50K courses and 60 obstacles to create a truly unique and brutal challenge. This is a serious ultra-distance athletic challenge. This incredible group of athletes shares their highs and lows. They also talk about what they had to do physically and mentally to compete at this level. AND they aren't done challenging themselves yet. They talk about what's next for themselves in the race/run/challenge world.

A great discussion about Christian's adventure on the show The Selection as well as his history of extreme events and training. I've been a fan of this man for some time now ever since I saw him on the show. I had prepared a bunch of questions to help ease us along and get into the mindset of what it's like to walk the path of the warrior but in listening to his stories he just exemplifies it by the way he is in life. I have completed over 100 races of marathon distance or farther, racing over volcanoes, across deserts, and through tropical jungles and infested swamps, all over the world. I've earned my 50-mile bib at World's Toughest Mudder on CBS, took a beating on American Ninja Warrior on NBC, and survived Hell as a finisher on THE SELECTION: Special Operations Experiment, on History Channel. I have successfully completed the Fuego Y Agua 100K Trail Ultramarathon in Nicaragua more times (3) than anyone else in the history of the race. I'll never be a one-trick pony.
