Caleb Brewer - (Ret.) Army Green Beret, Bow Hunter, Founder of Stick Sniper Archery. Caleb is a lifelong Tucson native. He found his calling in 2005 when he joined the US Army. For 11 years, Caleb served in the military and earned the right to wear the Green Beret as a Special Forces soldier. In 2015, his life changed when he was critically injured by an IED, resulting in the loss of both legs while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. Throughout recovery, Caleb learned that being outdoors was just as therapeutic as any other method. He trained hard in the gym so that he could function out in nature. Caleb's passion for archery began in 2017. He quickly progressed to working on his own bow, building a near full-service shop in his garage, and bowhunting closely followed as part of the progression. In 2020, Caleb created the program for and became the Archery Program Manager for 501c3 Operation Enduring Warrior, in 2021 a nonprofit foundation that supports veterans and first responders. Caleb realized the massively therapeutic benefit archery had on those struggling with internal and external injuries. Now Caleb's goal is to grow the sport of archery within his hometown of Tucson through Stick Sniper Archery. Tune in as Bobby Marshall sits down with Caleb Brewer at Stick Sniper Archery in Tucson, AZ to discuss archery, bow hunting, recovery, mindset, outdoor therapy, Fread Bear, music, business, wildlife, family, outdoor Life & much more. Earl Granville: A National Guard Hero's Journey of Loss, Survival, & Triumph - Losing A Limb To A Roadside Bomb

Redefining Mindsets and Building Community In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus and Melanie's guest is Earl Granville, a true testament to resilience, leadership, and the power of positive mindset. Earl shares his transformative journey from trauma to triumph, offering listeners insights into how to redefine their own mindset to create the space for positive shifts in life. He discusses stepping out of your comfort zone, becoming the leader you are meant to be, and the critical importance of building and maintaining a healthy community. Earl's story is nothing short of inspiring. Just two weeks into basic training at Fort Benning, GA, with his twin brother Joe, the tragic events of 9/11 unfolded, marking a pivotal moment in his life. Earl went on to serve nine years as an Infantryman in the Army National Guard, with multiple deployments to Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. During his final tour, Earl lost his left leg below the knee due to a roadside bomb, and tragically, he also lost two of his teammates, Major Scott Hagerty and Specialist Derek Holland, on that same day. After the loss of his limb in combat and the passing of his brother Joe, who took his own life while serving on active duty, Earl discovered the power of a positive mindset and became a passionate advocate for mental health, physical fitness, and resilience. He continues his journey as a public speaker, traveling the country to share his story and motivate others to overcome challenges. In addition to speaking, Earl works with several non-profits like Operation Enduring Warrior, the Oscar Mike Foundation, and WarriorStrong, all of which help wounded veterans and law enforcement officers stay physically active post-injury. Earl's efforts have earned him numerous awards, including the 2018 Attorney General Heart So Big Award, the Junior Chamber International (JCI USA) TOYA Award, and the 2018 Daughters of the American Revolution Veterans Volunteer Award. He retired as a Staff Sergeant with multiple honors, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantryman Badge. Tune in to hear how Earl Granville's story of overcoming adversity and his commitment to positive change can inspire you to face your own challenges with resilience, build stronger connections, and lead a life of purpose. In This Episode You Will Hear: • One good thing about these conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan is that we've had a lot of people in their 20s and 30s that were losing limbs that causes technology to be boosted. (3:48) • The amputee's best friend is your Allen wrench. (7:03) • [At] NYPD, the culture today is like the modern day Vietnam veteran. (21:09) • Joining the military made it about me. What can I get out of this? Sure – free college. But going to Iraq, I became an NCO, put in charge of people. I realized this isn't about me, it's about us. (37:27) • There's pride that people take when tragedy happens. It's what the community does to honor those who aren't here anymore. (42:52) • I remember going over the headset talking to my guys like “Damn, it's beautiful here, look at this green grass. Who's water the grass in Afghanistan?” The next thing I remember, I saw nothing but black. (65:52) • I was ejected out of my Humvee and I wasn't wearing mu gunner's harness which probably saved my life, because the roof peeled back like a tuna can. (70:04) • Everything happened right in my situation. I really do feel that way. What do I have to complain about? (70:20) • Afghans don't have the will to fight. (76:26) • Have you ever met an Afghan or an Iraqi with an Iraqi flag or an Afghan flag tattoo? (76:43) • I went under for surgery on my hip, and I woke up in Germany, with a nurse pulling a breathing tube out of my throat. (79:02) • Joe [my twin brother] seeing me in this state, says to me: “I shoulda just gone with you. (84:23) • It's not forever. I'm gonna get my independence back. I'm gonna be walking again, cause it's not forever. (96:08) • While on active duty, my twin brother, Staff Sergeant Joe Granville, takes his own life. (97:57) • How do I get this second chance at life, and Joe [my twin brother] take his away? (98:08) • Not every mental health situation with an armed forces service member is PTSD related. (109:00) • The big thing people need is purpose – military or not. (110:29) • I found this passion of physical fitness once again thanks to being introduced to Crossfit. (120:41) • People you surround yourself with, I truly believe, makes who you are. Warriors, Police, Veterans Helping Each Other: A Special Episode. In the realm of law enforcement, the term "warriors" extends beyond the battlefield and into the heart of communities. Law enforcement officers, akin to warriors on the front lines, confront the harsh realities of their profession daily. The weight of responsibility, coupled with the unpredictability of the job, can leave lasting scars. Chris understands this all too well, having witnessed the toll it takes on his fellow officers. Yet, in the face of adversity, he found a calling—to give back and assist others who share the burden of maintaining law and order. Chris Thorp, a retired law enforcement officer from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, knows the significance of being a warrior in the service of justice. He recounts his hardest day as a Sheriff's Deputy, a day etched with challenges that tested not only his physical prowess but also his mental resilience. Chris's commitment to supporting his comrades led him to embrace Operation Enduring Warrior - Task Force Sentinel. This organization stands as a beacon of hope for military veterans, first responders, and law enforcement officers grappling with the aftermath of their service. It is a testament to the spirit of warriors helping each other, transcending the boundaries between professions. In a world where the line between heroes and civilians blurs, the call to join hands becomes more resounding. Veterans, police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, united by a common purpose, rally together. They recognize that the challenges extend beyond the physical realm, acknowledging the silent battles fought within—the struggles against PTSD and the trauma that lingers long after the sirens fade. The camaraderie among these warriors is a force that binds them together. They understand that on the hardest days, it's the collective strength that sees them through. Physical injuries may heal with time, but the scars of the mind demand a different kind of healing—one that comes from mutual support and understanding. Chris Thorp's journey exemplifies the essence of warriors coming together, not only to share their stories but to actively help each other. Operation Enduring Warrior is a conduit for this collective effort, channeling the resilience of those who've faced the hardest days into programs that address both the visible and invisible wounds. In law enforcement, veterans, and emergency responders, the threads of support form a resilient bond. It's a testament to the idea that in joining forces, these warriors can make a difference not just in their own lives but in the lives of those who continue to stand on the front lines. The call to action echoes loudly—to join, to help, and to ensure that no warrior faces their hardest days alone.   Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW) is a veteran-founded non‐profit 501(c)(3) whose mission is to honor, empower, and motivate our nation's wounded military and law enforcement veterans through physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation. Our programs help participants overcome adversity and hardship through innovation, teamwork, and perseverance. This ultimately enables the lives of our wounded military and public service veterans to go in directions they may have once thought were impossible. OEW is a 100% volunteer-run organization. "There is nothing like living on the verge of death to realize you are alive."    Like other veterans and first responders, Sean knows this feeling.  It can be addictive, a feeling you long to have even though danger is always close. This is Sean Welch's story.  Sean and Tina have a deep discussion about his PTS (D omitted on purpose.) and the day he lost his good friend while on deployment.   Sean watched his friend die; survivors guilt consumed Sean.  The nightmares and PTS are part of his life every single day. Sleep avails Sean. He is triggered by certain smells.  Sean is not alone; PTS affects so many of our veterans and first reponders.  They see the worst of humanity, but the calling to help others outweighs the horrors. Sean is a proud veteran, and a dedicated police officer. One year ago Sean achieved his dream of becoming a k-9 police officer.  Sean and his faithful partner, Fero, patrol together everyday. Growing up in Arizona, Caleb Brewer joined the military in 2005. After reading a book about the Special Forces, he found his true calling of becoming a Green Beret. While conducting combat operations in the treacherous Helmand Province of Afghanistan in 2015, his life changed forever when he was critically injured by an IED. Losing both of his legs, Brewer began the long road to recovery. It was during that process that he would discover the sport of archery. It didn't take long and he was working on his own bows, started bowhunting and quickly experienced the benefits, both mental and physical, that his new passion had to offer. In 2020, working with Operation Enduring Warrior, Caleb started an archery program for the 501c3 to offer the same healing he had found to others.Purchasing an archery shop in his hometown of Tucson in November of 2021, Brewer is now pouring into the lives of people from around the country, using archery and his inspirational story to make a difference. We talk a bit of hunting as well including another near death experience this fall where he was swept up in a raging river. He would survive and weeks later, take an awesome bull elk in a story that truly inspired me and I am sure will leave you feeling the same.A humble man not wanting to be in the limelight, Caleb Brewer provided a great service to our country and paid the price. He hasn't allowed that slow him down and is doing great things for the Veteran and archery community. We are thankful to have him as part of the HHAUSA family and hope to collaborate in the future to positively impact even more lives. At Adam's lowest point, the debilitating pain and depression associated with the disease, led Adam to try and take his own life.  Adam kept his family in the dark about that day for years. It was quite by chance Adam found Jonathan Lopez (Jonathan had one arm amputated) on Instagram.  Adam had crushed his hand inside a police cruiser which resulted in his inability to even tie his shoe.  Out of desperation Adam contacted Jonathan with a simple question, "How do you tie your shoe?" Adam was shocked when Jonathan actually followed up, and taught Adam how to tie his shoe.   It was through Jonathan that Adam learned about an organization called Operation Enduring Warrior.  Through OEW, Adam found purpose.  He volunteers for the organization, and has learned that if those without arms and legs can accomplish their goals, he too can aspire to be more. Adam still has bad days.  Adam is still battling fibromyalgia, but has learned to deal with his pain through exercise, therapy, and the love of his family. Through Adam's work as a police officer, he has helped countless people overcome drug addiction.   Mental health is a top priority for Adam, and encourages everyone to find some ONE to talk to on those bad days.

This episode today was an unexpected surprise. I did not know very much about Earl's background before I invited him on my podcast. As I did my research, I learned that I was going to be interviewing a real American hero and inspiration. He's had some rough times in his life. Dark, in fact. He chose not to stay in the dark. Instead, he found the light that gave him energy to push on. To inspire others, to motivate, to ask that you don't feel sorry for yourself. Rather, take charge of this life while you have the chance. I was honored to have Earl as a guest. Enjoy! Instagram: @earlgranville Facebook: Earl Granville Operation Enduring Warrior: https://www.enduringwarrior.org/

Day 2 from the Tactical Games was an amazing experience. It was a day filled with heart wrenching stories, wisdom, and truth.  We started the day off talking with one of our sponsors, the owner and creator of Rx Plus Plates, David. David tells us how he came up with and made this amazing life changing workout plate. Followed by a power couple unlike any other,  and uncommon beyond belief, Anthony and Alison Dissorro. Anthony being a Tactical Games OG and both being full time police officer. You don't want to miss this fun and heartfelt conversation about life as a married police couple and what it's like fighting to stay uncommon in a common world. Next, we sat down with Jeremy and Juan of Operation Enduring Warrior. Words can not express what it was like to sit across from warriors like this. This organization is so unique in what it is doing for the warrior community. We were speechless and moved to tears listening to them tell their stories of being wounded on the job and what they are doing to continue to push forward and to help others in the processes. And lastly, the Hurricane herself, Ashley Cockrell. Not just a Dean of a school, but the kind of Dean you would not want to mess with. A tactical games athlete and college football player fighting to keep police funded. Thank you to our sponsors Triarc Systems, Triple C Gun Range and RX Plus Plates for making this all possible. At 17 Jonathan joined the United States Army. He attended Airborne school and the Ranger Indoctrination Program. He became part of a sniper unit with the first infantry division. He deployed to Europe after basic training. Once there he attended Belgium Commando School and SFAS, Special Forces Assessment and selection. At 20 years old, while stationed in Germany, he was hit by a drunk driver, his injuries were so severe that his left arm had to be amputated and he was told by doctors he may never walk again. Shortly after, he was honorably discharged from the US Army. He felt out of place in his new civilian life and had a hard time identifying with other wounded veterans, who were combat wounded. And after quite some time overcoming his demons, he found himself on a new journey. He became involved in outdoor training activities that consisted of kayaking, diving, cave exploration and much more. In 2015, along with his service dog Zoe, he began participating in Obstacle Course Races for his own physical and mental growth. Since then he has completed numerous Spartan races, mud runs and rucks. He volunteers with Operation Enduring Warrior a veteran run organization, that helps wounded veterans obtain their physical goals and overcome their challenges. He also volunteers at Homestead Air Reserve Base, helping veterans and their families transition into the civilian world with benefits and healthcare services. He also volunteers with Achilles Freedom Team and the Miami VA. He has become an advocate for eliminating opioid dependence in the military and finding alternative ways to help overcome depression and PTSD. He lives by the motto “DIE FIRST, THEN QUIT!”

Christopher Wolff has an amazing story. Here is a summary in his words On September 11, 2001 I was in NYC where I missed my ferry which was supposed to take me across the harbor to have breakfast inside the windows of the world at the top of the World Trade Center. This day was reason I enlisted in the Air Force. During my 6th deployment, my aircraft that was flying over Afghanistan underwent an RPG attack that it shouldn’t have survived from. But it did and I returned home safely and intact. Upon returning home, the Air Force required us to receive our annual flu shot. The vaccine paralyzed me from the neck down. I was a C4 quadriplegic for 2 years. It has been 7 years since the beginning of my paralysis and I have worked tirelessly to overcome my obstacles and am now a T12 Paraplegic with enough motor function in my upper legs to be able to walk with forearm crutches. I started working out at the Adaptive Training Foundation in January of 2016 and I have gained the ability to walk further distances. On October 29th, 2017 I competed with my Adaptive Training Foundation Team and we completed a Spartan Sprint in 4:30. That was the longest distance to date that I have walked (Which was over 1 mile). I’m looking forward to many more obstacle courses and physical challenges. Chris just completed his Spartan Trifecta with The help of @Operation Enduring Warrior. There are many adversities we face in life. Some of outward-facing while many are scars we carry on the insides of our hearts. Today's guest can speak to both. Jonathan Lopez is an Army Infantry veteran + member of Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW). OEW is a veteran-founded non‐profit whose mission is to honor, empower, and motivate our nation’s wounded military and law enforcement veterans through physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation. Jonathan joins us for a raw, emotional and honest conversation about serving our country, learning how to accept unexpected circumstances + challenges in life and inspiring others to do the same. (Thank you to Live Inspired community member Martina for sharing her special relationship Jonathan, his connection her late son Thomas + the work OEW is doing in our communities. Share your guest recommendations with us at podcast@johnolearyinspires.com) SHOW NOTES: According to the 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, more than 16 United States veterans die by suicide every day. At 17 years old, Jonathan joined the Army seeking brotherhood + community, something that was lacking in his life. During Special Forces Training, Jonathan realized the community he always sought was already in the barracks + quit. Days later, Jonathan was involved with a head-on motorcycle accident that resulted in 17 fractures in his left leg, broke every rib on his left side + the amputation of his left arm. Finding peace: "Not too long ago, I let go. It was one of the most liberating things."  Jonathan's focus + determination on rehabilitating his leg helped him cope with the loss of his arm. Unleashing a monster: While rehabilitating his leg, Jonathan became addicted to opioids, which eventually led to a suicide attempt. "Figuring out how to do things with one hand is not that complicated. Mental rehabilitation is hard." Redemption: During induction to Operation Enduring Warrior's Masked Athlete Team, Jonathan's mentor Jeff Farmer presented an opportunity for redemption.   "Face your obstacles, smile + get it over with." Jonathan attempted suicide not wanting his children to grow up with a "deadbeat father". Today, he's choosing to live because of his kids. Learn more about Operation Enduring Warrior here. Galloway recently created the No Excuses Charitable Fund, which raises money and awareness for organizations that mean the most to him, including Operation Enduring Warrior and No Barriers USA. In this episode we dive into: How the events of 9/11 transformed Noah from wanting nothing to do with the military to enlisting in the armed forces in less than 24 hours. The “Triangle of death” and the events in Southwest Baghdad that led to the explosive device attack on Noah's humvee and the loss of his arm and leg. Noah's struggle with the loss of his identity after his injury, and the depression that followed and how he turned his life around. What drove Noah to get back into fitness, start a business, and redefine his purpose. The impact that social media has had on veterans and how it has given them the ability to share their stories and connect with others that might be experiencing similar struggles. How Noah landed on Dancing with the Stars and the lessons he learned from diving into an area in which he had almost no experience. The greatest physical challenges that Noah has learned to overcome following his injuries. His struggle with perfectionism and how he’s dealt with this mental block. Just move! That’s the bottom line for these three members of Oscar Mike and Operation Enduring Warrior, both organizations designed to get wounded veterans on the move! “Oscar Mike” means “on the move” in military parlance. These three adaptive Spartans, Jonathan Lopez, Noah Currier, and Earl Granville, have sought out the race as a way of eradicating any perception that they are victims. They are, instead, comrades in the human wide struggle to help one another excel at life. According to one of the athletes the greatest thing he witnessed during the race was not the elite athletes crushing the course or even adaptive athletes and veterans doing the improbable; it was seeing someone fall down face first and be picked up by his teammates, showing that Spartans fall, bleed and find the strength to go on, “just like us.” Lessons: 1. Seek out the obstacle, the struggle, for the valuable lessons it can teach you.
 2. More or less visibly, we’re all adapting to and trying to overcome something.
 3. Accomplishment and happiness can be dependent on finding a strong community.

The team members who don the mask are members of the Masked Athlete Team (MAT).  These members have gone through a rigorous selection process known as Warrior INDOC. This in-depth process is composed of several phases of personal, professional and physical analysis, fundraising abilities, and teamwork assessment. The final phase is a 48-hour physical and mental endurance component during which candidates complete a series of challenges under the close supervision of selected team members. Candidates who successfully complete this stage may then be invited to join the ranks of the Team. Completion rate from start to finish is often times less than 20%. We also rely heavily on our OEW Community Ambassadors (OCAs). These are selfless men and women who have chosen to take up the banner of our cause to honor, empower and motivate wounded veterans.  They accomplish this by fundraising on behalf of the team, arranging social events, and participating in a wide variety of athletic events in our branded gear (gas masks not allowed). Often these athletes will run alongside the MAT at events. The OCA members are invaluable to the success of our mission. Become an OEW Community Ambassador (OCA) Our Community Ambassadors (OCAs) are volunteer supporters who wish to assist in raising awareness and donations for OEW through spreading the word, participating in local community events wearing OEW branded gear, and promoting our cause through social media outlets. The OCA program was established to give everyone across the country the opportunity to personally support our nation’s wounded service members and their families. While only our Masked Athlete Team assist our wounded veterans at athletic events, all of our OCAs can assist in the community! About Jonathan Lopez Previous to 2000, Jonathan was a highly-motivated infantry soldier on a successful career trajectory. He had completed Airborne training, the Ranger Indoctrination program and trained abroad with the Belgium Commandos. He deployed with the first infantry division and had just attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection – when the universe decided it had other plans for him. While he does not have much in the way of actual memory of the accident itself, he was told that he had been hit by a drunk driver while on his motorcycle. He has a vague memory of laying on the pavement, a helicopter, doctors speaking in German desperately working on him and the plane ride leading to his arrival at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. He was told he had suffered multiple injuries, including the loss and subsequent amputation of his left arm. Jonathan was subjected to many surgeries the first couple of months to replace his tibia and femur with titanium rods and multiple bone grafts. The loss of his arm was overshadowed by the overwhelming concern of never being able to walk again. Jonathan Lopez was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 2001 following the amputation of his left arm. But having one arm hasn't stopped Lopez from competing in Spartan races and even climbing a 30-foot rope. With the help of Operation Enduring Warrior, a veterans charity that helps "facilitate the physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation of our nation's wounded service," Lopez has been able to participate in Spartan races, even in spite of his disability. About Earl Granville A nine-year veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as an infantryman, Granville served in support of Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In the summer of 2008, while on patrol in Zormat, Afghanistan, his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb, resulting in the amputation of his left leg through his knee. His comrades, Specialist Derek Holland, of Wind Gap, Pennsylvania, and Major Scott Haggerty, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, were killed in action. In December 2010, Granville suffered the loss of his twin brother, Staff Sergeant Joseph Granville, who took his own life. Today, Granville speaks publicly about the importance of finding professional help when coping with mental distress, particularly for members of the military who have served in combat. In addition to speaking engagements, Granville competes in adaptive sports, including monoski, sled hockey and in GoRuck Endurance Challenges and Spartan Races. He has competed in numerous marathons across the county on a hand bicycle, including the Marine Corps Marathon and races in Boston, Detroit, Chicago and New York. He ran two half marathons alongside Operation Enduring Warrior is a finisher of the 2016 Bataan Death Memorial March; and completed the Spartan Agoge, a 60-hour endurance event. He is a team member of Operation Enduring Warrior, a non-profit organization managed by veterans, and he is the lead ambassador of Oscar Mike, an American-made apparel company founded by veterans.
