When a parent learns that their child has been diagnosed with a serious illness or condition, it's difficult not to be consumed with worst case scenarios. But as Bekah Bowman will tell you, you have two choices: either allow your past and future to steal joy from your present, or embrace joy in the present moment, no matter what it looks like. And Bekah is no stranger to this concept: her two boys, Titus and Ely, were both affected by a rare genetic disease (CLN2) that leads to the quick loss of skills and eventual passing in childhood. After her oldest son passed away Bekah wrote Can't Steal My Joy, a book dedicated to helping those whose life path has taken an unexpected turn to rediscover joy. Today, Bekah shares some of her strategies on how to manage anticipatory grief, learning to make the best of the present, the importance of making time to grieve, leaning on your faith, and the power of acceptance. Key Takeaways with Bekah Bowman Ways to process a difficult diagnosis Managing anticipatory grief Learning to focus on the present & enjoy each moment Dealing with feelings of numbness The power of acceptance and embracing joy Why you should consider scheduling “grieving sessions” Leaning on your faith through grief The importance of honoring date nights with your partner Finding community in extended family and friends Learning to flex your “Joy Muscle” Show Notes: Get Full Access to the Show Notes by visiting: MatteasJoy.org/73. Life is a Ride---Overcoming Huge Challenges in Unconventional Ways
Teona Ducre has to be one of the most inspirational humans I've ever spoken with. I hope you listen to this conversation about her cancer journey, and how she is helping others deal with this disease. She's a hero---cancer didn't steal her joy! About Teona: Teona Ducre is a six year pancreatic cancer survivor from Atlanta, GA. She is a single mother of two adult children, Grant (22) and Sydney (19) and works for Pinnacle Health of Atlanta as a Physician Recruiter. Teona was diagnosed at the age of 41 on April 1, 2016 (yes, April Fool's Day!) Her battle with pancreatic cancer included 6 months of very aggressive chemotherapy that successfully shrunk the tumor and made her eligible for surgery in November of 2016.The day before Thanksgiving 2016, Teona was released to go home and celebrate the holiday with her family and friends. She then underwent another 5 months of chemotherapy until she was officially declared in remission. Teona's motto throughout her cancer journey was “Cancer Can't Steal My Joy.” Soon after getting diagnosed, Teona began volunteering with various organizations including Purple Pansies and the Pancreatic Cancer Network (PanCAN) to advocate for all those impacted by this devastating disease. Her volunteer work includes being a guest speaker at the Purple Pansies annual Gala and fundraiser, as well as being an Honorary Board Member of Purple Pansies. She has served as board member and executive director of Destroy Pancreatic Cancer Foundation of Atlanta. She has served in various roles with the Atlanta PanCAN affiliate, including participating in the planning of Purple Stride Atlanta, traveling to Washington DC on multiple occasions for National Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill and serving as the Affiliate Chair, Affiliate Co-Chair and a 3 year member of the PanCAN Survivor Council. She also is the author of HealthFULLLife blog and uses social media to spread awareness about her battle with pancreatic cancer. In addition, Teona shares her story through attending speaking engagements and interviews for both print and broadcast media. She has been a guest on several Atlanta radio shows and on Atlanta Unplugged with WNBA player Tamara Young, whose father died of pancreatic cancer. Teona also appeared in a national interview on CBS with PanCAN CEO and President, Julie Fleishman. Teona celebrated a milestone 6 years in remission in 2022 and continues her volunteerism. As a woman of color, Teona is dedicated to educating Black and Brown communities about the disease and spreading awareness with the goal of bettering outcomes for the BIPOC community diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Through her involvement with Purple Pansies and other advocacy and health education roles, Teona was inspired to pursue a career as a physician recruiter. She hopes to eventually complete her MPH degree to work more closely with nonprofit organizations and globally to improve health outcomes for People of Color.
Stephanie and Travis are back after a heavy couple of weeks. Stephanie has a PSA about how our emotions are all over the place right before that time of the month. “Did You Know” Men make up their minds about marriage pretty fast? Umm in what universe? Stephanie is reading another Terrence Real book: The New Rules of Marriage. She talks about what Real calls a losing strategy, withdrawal. Withdrawal can be easily confused with acceptance but one comes with resentment, the other is achieved through gratitude. What is the difference between stonewalling vs responsible distance or space taking? It's that time of the year where the pressures of the world start to feel even heavier. The holidays can add multiple layers of stress even onto healthy relationships. From finances, family traditions, and social media influencers, they all can suck the joy out of the holiday season. Stephanie and Travis discuss how they are working on creating new traditions and reflect on their upbringing. They also get into the fact that maybe you don't always have to be the bigger person. It is okay to stay away from places and people that do not bring you joy.Become A Patron! - https://patreon.com/westilllikeeachother/

This week we're finishing up our series CAN'T STEAL MY JOY with a special treat from some people in our church who have walked through difficult circumstances but have still remained joyful! Listen to hear from Joel, Becca, + Reed Smith, Julie Robinson, and Erin Adams and hear how you too can remain joyful despite the things you may encounter that may try to steal your joy!
We're in the last chapter of the book of Philippians this week and week four of our CAN'T STEAL MY JOY series! In this message, Pastor Dustin focuses in on some of Paul's most famous verses when it comes to dealing with anxiety, worry, and stress. How do we handle anxiety? Turn to Philippians 4:6-8 and listen in!
We're in week three of our CAN'T STEAL MY JOY series and this week Pastor Dustin is taking us through chapter 3 of the book of Philippians! In this part of his letter to the church at Philippi, the apostle Paul reminds them (and us) that things may happen in this world that try to steal our joy but there nothing that compares to the joy of knowing Jesus!
It's week two of our CAN'T STEAL MY JOY series and this week we're diving into Chapter 2 of the book of Philippians! All throughout this chapter, Pastor Dustin shows us, Paul tells the Philippians they have to make the choice to follow after Jesus. This comes with making the choice to be humble, to be a servant, and to be obedient.
Throughout the entire month of July we're going to be studying through the book of Philippians in a series called Can't Steal My Joy! This week, Pastor Dustin McClain kicks the new series off discussing some of the big differences between happiness and joy. Often times we get happiness confused with joy and from looking at Philippians 1, we learn from the apostle Paul that the fastest way to be joyful is to be thankful!
Ep. 244 Nothing Can Steal My Joy by Pastor Sal Martinez
In this episode, right at the closing of May's Mental Health Awareness Month, we tap the shoulder of highly-acclaimed 'Black Joy' author Tracey Michae'l Lewis-Giggetts. In an inspiring story, Tracey discusses how she "PR'd" a simple guest essay on Black Joy for the Washington Post, into a globally renowned best-selling title -- from one of the top publishers in the world. In discussing 'Black Joy' and how to find joy during traumatic or discouraging times -- Tracey's candid depiction and characterization of how the Black community accesses joy as its own form of resistance -- is always prime for discussion. Later on, Tracey and Leah dive deeper into the simple concept of utilizing the breath (or deep breathing) as a variation of joy. Known for its healing properties, the concept of breath work is widely accessed during meditation, yoga, mindfulness and many other global modalities as a tool to battling many of the causes of mental health disturbances or mental distress.Read Tracey's original Washington Post Essay on Black Joy HereGrab your own copy of 'Black Joy' HerePre-Order Tracey's upcoming book, 'Then They Came for Mine: Healing from the Trauma of Racial Violence' HereSupport the show

Dr. Charles Blackstock preaches on holding onto your joy.
No circumstance can force you to get upset. Nothing can take your joy. You have to give it away. You're in complete control of your happiness. You don't need to respond to every critic and get drawn into battles that don't matter. You have the power and the ability. You could easily show them what you're made of, but your strength is under control. When you live like that, God says you'll be happy and live a full joy filled life. I lost it today, Mama. I allowed social media to steal my joy during my morning walk and this is what it was all about. What is happening across the globe is insanity, it breaks my heart, and I'm so tired of the division, the anger, the coercion, the lies, the collateral damage, and the FEAR. It's time to punch fear in the face, take our health into our own hands, and move forward. Warning: If you are upset or angered by someone talking about personal responsibility, body autonomy, medical freedom or freedom of choice, you may want to skip this one. This was just something I had to get off my chest in order to keep on keeping on. Some lessons: don't allow anyone or anything to steal your joy, stay off social media for the first hour at least in the morning, get the junk out of your head even if it's unpopular, go with your gut and listen to your intuition, think critically, and always be yourself! :) Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ljwcreative)

It has been just over a year since we brought home Champ, our first long-term placement in our foster care journey. It's been a year of learning, growing, and riding a rollercoaster of emotions. In this episode of the podcast, Jesse and I sit down and recount some of the most unexpected lessons -- the grief of goodbye, walking through deep sadness with our kids, what we've learned through reunification, how it has impacted our kids, thoughts on caring for a child with special needs, and how our faith has been strengthened and changed through it. We also talk about a book I'm reading, a book Jesse finished, plus the foster care support group and how sometimes stepping into awkward things can turn into really awesome relationships. In This Episode: [00:33] It’s foster care awareness month and we’re sharing our takeaways from this past year of fostering. [01:51] My foster care support group is saving my life these days. [05:42] Jesse finished the book he’s been reading and is still recommending it to me. [08:49] I’ve been reading Can’t Steal My Joy by Bekah Bowman. [11:35] Okay, let’s talk all things foster care and the unexpected lessons we’ve learned along the way. [13:20] Dealing with the grief that comes along with reunification was a huge lesson learned. [15:30] Our kids have also been impacted and given the opportunity to learn how to grieve. [17:12] How our grief impacted our initial experience with Baby D. [20:04] Fostering has impacted our kids and we went into that with eyes wide open, but it’s also given them a chance to grow so much. [23:01] It’s been amazing to watch our kids become so attached to these wonderful children. [26:02] Fear is normal. Expect the unexpected. [27:55] Foster care has also changed my perspective on hot button topics in the world. [30:14] This past year has deepened our faith like never before. It truly has tried to steal my joy. I have felt hopeless and like I lost my vision for my future. I've been asking myself "where do I go from here?" And what I've come to realize is - I don't have to know all of the answers. I don't have to know how to get to back to "normal", I don't have to know how to feel joyful, I don't have to know where I'm going. It's okay to just BE. To get back to the basics of self-care and having the courage to just take it DAY BY DAY! Remember, you're not alone! We're all in this together!

Wondering how you can have joy in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic, protests, and political uproar?! Pastor Jon preached a timely message from the book of Philippians on how we can choose joy through adversity, in purpose, and in serving. Joy is a supernatural response to natural hardship.
Jesus promises that we can have peace and joy, even during times of worry, stress and anxiety. In the final week of our series, Pastor Brian looks at Philippians Chapter 4 to teach what should do to combat the number one thief of joy.

We all need reminders, the most important being that through knowing Jesus, we will always know joy. This week, Pastor Brian teaches on the three things Paul writes about in Philippians Chapter 3 that will help us remember to always have joy.

In the book of Philippians, Paul writes over and over about the joy we all have which can't be taken from us. And he does this while sitting in a jail cell. So how did he have such a positive heart during his negative external circumstances? In week one of our new series “Can't Steal My Joy”, Pastor Brian begins by explaining three important differences between happiness and joy.

This week John is joined by Ezra Collective’s Femi, TJ and James to talk about how they wrote and recorded their debut album You Can’t Steal My Joy. Hot off the heels winning 'Jazz Album of the Year' at the World Wide Awards, the boys reflect upon how the album took shape, from the early rehearsals in a dodgy studio in Croatia to spending two days on a boat recording the whole thing. The boys play us previously unheard demos capturing the moments lightning struck, from a very rough voice memo to a more elaborate Garage Band creation knocked together on the top deck of a bus. Listen to find out how the band learns songs from street beat boxing, the challenge of writing an album for the ‘shuffle generation’, and which seat on the bus James sits in when writing on Garage Band. Tracks discussed: You Can't Steal My Joy, Quest For Coin, Why You Mad? Today's podcast episode is a little different, but it's the message of hope we all need. Because let’s face it, life can be so hard… like so hard… trials come that we do not anticipate. I recently was taking to someone and they said something that really resonated with me… “if you are thinking about someone and wondering if they are going through a hard time- you will be right a majority of the time." No one is free from trials. Today on the podcast I have Bekah Bowman, author of Can’t Steal my Joy. She is a walking example of finding joy no matter what life throws at you.
