The episode with Professor and Middle East expert Stephen Zunes began with Professor Michael Krasny asking about the victory of HTS over Assad in Syria and the poison weapons that remain there, as well as what to expect of the new government and its effect on ISIS, the Kurds, and migration.Krasny spoke of the profound enmity and divisions, and he and Zunes discussed prospects for democracy and the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Talk of Iran's role, the Houthis and Yemen, secularism, and the Sunni/Shia divide followed, as did discussion of Saudi Arabia rebranding itself, rising anti-Semitism, and "intifada" and "jihad" as triggering words. A listener posed questions about Egypt refusing to open its borders to Palestinians.Krasny then brought up the question of possible paths to peace and how best to determine bad actors from good ones in the region, as well as the likely effects of ongoing turmoil there and the effect of change in Syria on Russia's Putin and the ongoing war in Ukraine. The episode concluded with a listener's question about if and when Jewish Americans will be permitted to visit Syria.

30 years ago the US brokered Oslo accords seemed to herald a new era of peaceful coexistence for Israelis and Palestinians. Yasser Arafat -- long demonized as a terrorist in the Tel Aviv, whilst being hailed as a freedom fighter in Palestine -- shared a Nobel Peace Prize with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and politician Shimon Peres.  30 years later, peace seems further away than ever before after  Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants' horrific 7 October attack on Israel provoked a response from Israel that caused South Africa to take Israel to court for allegedly committing genocide.  In this episode I speak with Middle Eastern policy and strategy expert Dr. Stephen Zunes a Professor at the University of San Francisco. Stephen Zunes is professor at the University of San Francisco, where he teaches about strategic nonviolent action. He recounts the invasion of Western Sahara by Morocco after the withdrawal of the Spanish colonial government. Morocco has organized the migration of an overwhelming number of Moroccans into the occupied territory, and this has been supported by the U.S, and France, though the World Court and E.U. courts do not validate the Moroccan position. Zunes points out the success of nonviolent resistance depends on the smartness of the strategizing. He is optimistic because there is so much awareness growing about this approach. Stephen Zunes, professor of Politics and International Studies at University of San Francisco, joins Michael and Stephanie on this episode of Nonviolence Radio to talk about how the coup attempt on January 6 reveals some remarkable and genuinely hopeful forces growing inside our democracy. Rather than fear and outrage, Professor Zunes encourages us to take heart in the effective and well-planned nonviolent response by many activists to the angry protesters. This response was not spontaneous, indeed for months various groups and organizations offered targeted trainings on a range of nonviolent methods — and activists clearly learned some key strategies necessary for effective nonviolent action: “You have this combination of people who have shown a willingness to hit the streets and a willingness to be willing to face arrest and to engage in massive noncooperation. There was one thing that was really important about these trainings: it emphasized the importance of noncooperation that underscores what Gene Sharp and a lot of other people – Gandhi and so many other people that I’ve talked about before – governments are only as strong as people’s willingness to cooperate.” The nonviolent response on January 6 to the violent challenge to the American democracy could only have happened given a growing commitment to nonviolence, one that we have every right to expect will continue should greater threats emerge in the future. And it is precisely this commitment that, with effort and dedication, will allow us to listen better and come together as citizens who may disagree on this or that policy, but ultimately care deeply about each other as human beings. Scott talks to Stephen Zunes about Joe Biden’s track record on foreign policy, and its potential implications for his presidency. Zunes rehashes some of the bad parts of Biden’s record, beginning with his support for the invasion of Iraq. Although many Democrats voted for the war, Biden specifically and energetically advocated for it. Zunes worries that Biden is a true believer in the American empire, whereas President Trump doesn’t really have firm beliefs about anything. This made Trump unpredictable, but also probably less dangerous on the issue of foreign wars. Zunes speculates that Biden’s cabinet picks will be bad; all the same establishment figures that have been running America into the ground for at least 25 years. Scott talks to Stephen Zunes about Susan Rice, one of the leading candidates for Joe Biden’s VP pick. Rice fits Biden’s criteria in that she’s a black woman with political experience, but Zunes raises serious concerns about her track record. In particular, Rice turned out to be one of the most hawkish Democrats during her time in the Clinton and Obama administrations, and she played a role in pushing for America’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. Zunes points out that if “a black woman” is Biden’s only important qualification, then he should at least pick someone with better left-wing credentials and with actual ties to the black community—Rice, he says, is virtually indistinguishable in her politics from all the white male establishment war hawks. Discussed on the show: “Implications of Pro-War Susan Rice as VP Nominee” (Accuracy.Org) “Colin Powell’s speech to the UN Security Council” (Brookings) “Column: No, Susan Rice did not support the Iraq War” (Chicago Tribune) “Don’t Attack Saddam” (WSJ) “Susan Rice has Israel’s back” (POLITICO) “Why Would Biden Pick Susan Rice?” (Defense One) Stephen Zunes is a professor of politics and international studies at the University of San Francisco. Stephen Zunes talks about Joe Biden’s shameful history helping to advocate for the invasion of Iraq in 2002 and 2003. These days he claims he was caught up in the aftermath of 9/11 and was simply mistaken about the intelligence, like everyone else who voted for the war. But Zunes reminds us that Biden was chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at that time, with a Democratic-majority congress. With his influence, he probably could have stopped the war singlehandedly. If that weren’t enough, Zunes says that Biden was actually advocating “boots on the ground” to depose Saddam Hussein before 9/11. On this issue alone, Biden should be disqualified from the presidency, and Zunes and Scott expect a poor showing in the general election, should he end up with the Democratic nomination. But, what if he is the ONLY candidate who can truly overwhelm Trump? Can his movement of young people inspired to vote counterbalance those “moderate Republicans” who might switch from Trump to either a Biden or a Bloomberg?Weighing in on this issue on Wiki Politiki Radio is scholar and Middle East scholar Stephen Zunes, who recently wrote a piece for Truthout debunking the idea that a progressive candidate cannot win the general election. Zunes, who as a teenager worked for the George McGovern campaign, insists the comparison between McGovern, who lost in a landslide, and Sanders holds no water.Dr. Stephen Zunes is a Professor of Politics and International Studies at the University of San Francisco, where he serves as coordinator of the program in Middle Eastern Studies. Phosphate mining is crucial to global food production, given that phosphorus is an essential ingredient in commercial fertilisers. By far, the largest reserves of the world’s phosphates are in Morocco. And while Morocco is the third-largest miner of phosphates, a small percentage of its production comes from the disputed territory of Western Sahara. Morocco considers the territory as part of its country, something the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Polisario Front vehemently disagree with. Matt Davies travels to Morocco to speak to Nada Elmajdoub, an executive at the national phosphate company OCP. He also hears from Mohamed Kamal Fadel, a spokesperson for the Polisario Front, which is bringing legal challenges against Morocco's phosphate exports in its bid to win independence for Western Sahara. Meanwhile Professor Stuart White of the University of Technology Sydney questions the sustainability of the planet's usage of mined phosphates to boost crop yields, plus Stephen Zunes, a professor of Middle East politics at the University of San Francisco, explains the history of the Western Sahara conflict and how Morocco gained the upper hand. This week on CounterSpin: With the resounding margin of 410 to 8, the House of Representatives passed a resolution in late July endorsing Israel's continuing attacks on Lebanon and the Gaza Strip; but our guest explains that that overwhelming bipartisan majority endorsed some other things as well, including the meaninglessness of international law and potential military action against Iran and Syria. Professor and author Stephen Zunes will discuss that and other underexplored aspects of this evolving crisis. Also on the show: understanding the language we use to talk about politics is essential to understanding media coverage of politics. Buzzwords like ‘values' mean something very specific, usually defined to the advantage of conservatives. UC Berkeley linguist Geoff Nunberg explains in his new book "Talking Right" that this is no accident, part of a concerted effort by the right to define the language of politics. He'll join us to talk about it, and about what the media does to help. The post Counterspin – August 4, 2006 appeared first on KPFA.
