Vandalism at draft board offices as U.S. involvement in Vietnam was escalating was deeply divisive. Opponents of the war were stereotyped as dirty hippies and sanctimonious white college kids, but the anti-Vietnam-war movement in the U.S. was really broad. Stephen Zunes is professor at the University of San Francisco, where he teaches about strategic nonviolent action. He recounts the invasion of Western Sahara by Morocco after the withdrawal of the Spanish colonial government. Morocco has organized the migration of an overwhelming number of Moroccans into the occupied territory, and this has been supported by the U.S, and France, though the World Court and E.U. courts do not validate the Moroccan position. Zunes points out the success of nonviolent resistance depends on the smartness of the strategizing. He is optimistic because there is so much awareness growing about this approach. Reynolds joins us to discuss his recent WhoWhatWhy piece "Havana Syndrome and TikTok Tics: Many Forms of Mass Hysteria" and the potential geopolitical implications of mass psychogenic illnesses in the age of social media and renewed tensions between the U.S. and countries like China, Russia, and Cuba. In our second segment Insider (formerly known as Business Insider) journalist Mia Jankowicz joins us to discuss her coverage of prominent anti-vaxxers, chief among them Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, and how their enterprise may be proving quite lucrative for them. Among other things Dr. Tenpenny is connected to MyPillow's Mike Lindell (who has been pushing conspiracy theories about the 2020 election) and has promoted sensational claims such as the belief that vaccines turn people magnetic. And finally, Dr. Stephen Zunes returns to the program to discuss the recent Amnesty International report arguing Israel is in engaging in the practice of apartheid against Palestinians, especially in the Occupied Territories. Dr. Zunes will also give his thoughts on the reaction of the U.S. media and Congressmen to the report.

We kick off the show with some feedback from you regarding the old tech you just can't throw away. Laptops, Zunes, camcorders, etc., but what is it that makes us keep hold out-of-date gadgets? Steven thinks he has the answer. Next, Steven tells us all just what he loves about his latest purchases. Does the home button on the iPhone SE really make it the must-have iPhone? Do the Beats Studio Buds outperform the AirPods Pro? Steven will give us his thoughts. After some complaining about VoiceOver problems the team are having on the Mac and Apple Watch, it's on to this week's tech news. You'll soon be able to run Windows as a virtual machine on the M1 Mac, but just how good of an experience could it be? Also, Twitter has caused a bit of a outcry over its introduction of a new font. Apart from its name, Chirp, just how bad can a change of font be? And Intel has announced that it will be going up against graphics card giants Nvidia and AMD with its new line of high-end graphics cards called Arc. With Nvidia dominating the graphics market for so long, does Intel really have a chance? All this and more, only on Double Tap Canada.

On this edition of Parallax Views, we continue our series exploring the past 20 years of U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan. Dr. Stephen Zunes, founder of the Middle East Studies Program at USF, joins us to discuss his thoughts on the latest developments as well as to pushback on attacks on Biden's decision to withdrawal, especially from the right-wing. Additionally, Dr. Zunes and I spend a great deal of time discussing why he was against the invasion and bombing of Afghanistan by U.S. forces even in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Zunes argued at the early onset of the plans for intervention that the actions taken by the Bush administration and later continued by Obama and the administrations that followed him were playing right into the hands of Osama Bin Laden. We also discuss the issue of women's rights, where Afghanistan will go from here under Taliban rule, why Zunes believes Biden took a brave stand in going forward with the withdrawal, the need for an investigation into the botching of the exit strategy, the problem of military vs. economic/infrastructure development in the Afghan mission, and much, much more.

Scott talks to Stephen Zunes about Susan Rice, one of the leading candidates for Joe Biden’s VP pick. Rice fits Biden’s criteria in that she’s a black woman with political experience, but Zunes raises serious concerns about her track record. In particular, Rice turned out to be one of the most hawkish Democrats during her time in the Clinton and Obama administrations, and she played a role in pushing for America’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. Zunes points out that if “a black woman” is Biden’s only important qualification, then he should at least pick someone with better left-wing credentials and with actual ties to the black community—Rice, he says, is virtually indistinguishable in her politics from all the white male establishment war hawks. Discussed on the show: “Implications of Pro-War Susan Rice as VP Nominee” (Accuracy.Org) “Colin Powell’s speech to the UN Security Council” (Brookings) “Column: No, Susan Rice did not support the Iraq War” (Chicago Tribune) “Don’t Attack Saddam” (WSJ) “Susan Rice has Israel’s back” (POLITICO) “Why Would Biden Pick Susan Rice?” (Defense One) Stephen Zunes is a professor of politics and international studies at the University of San Francisco. Stephen Zunes talks about Joe Biden’s shameful history helping to advocate for the invasion of Iraq in 2002 and 2003. These days he claims he was caught up in the aftermath of 9/11 and was simply mistaken about the intelligence, like everyone else who voted for the war. But Zunes reminds us that Biden was chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at that time, with a Democratic-majority congress. With his influence, he probably could have stopped the war singlehandedly. If that weren’t enough, Zunes says that Biden was actually advocating “boots on the ground” to depose Saddam Hussein before 9/11. On this issue alone, Biden should be disqualified from the presidency, and Zunes and Scott expect a poor showing in the general election, should he end up with the Democratic nomination. I just received word from the ASS (American Space Society) that my family has been chosen for Ark Six-Sixty-Six. My wife, my dog, and myself have been selected to survive. On this Ark, there are no cell phones, there are no MP3 players, No iPods - not even Zunes. Because these ships were developed secretly in the 1990s, there are only CD players available for each family - and each person is only allowed to bring one compact disc each. Wow, space really is limited. I am forced to make the toughest decision of my life. I can bring a CD with me to the giant spaceship that chose me to survive the the soon to be exploding Earth - but on that CD I am only allowed 16 songs. Well obviously all 16 Songs will be Iron Maiden songs - but which 16? From which albums? I think it’s only fair, and an amazing coincidence, that Iron Maiden (at the time of Earth’s final days) has sixteen albums - and I have 16 tracks to choose for my space CD. So it comes down to this. One song. One song from each album. I must choose one song from each Iron Maiden album as the only song that I can listen to for the rest of my life. In space. In a spaceship. Have I over complicated this simple premise enough? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

After a two month hiatus to focus on bringing a new life into the world, Remember When is proud to be back on your iPods, Zunes, and computers! We kick off the show by continuing our Scorsese edition of Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen.  Released in 1995 and featuring an all-star cast, Parris previously stated that he expected Jay to like Casino, but not as much as he loved Goodfellas.  Will the prognostications of Parris prove poignant, or will Jay dislike this film?  We sit and talk about the joys of Scorsese's direction, the writing pace, and the stellar performance of Sharon Stone. Then we kick into higher gear as we talk about the lead-in to the 2010 Summer movie season, Iron Man 2.  Robert Downey Jr. is back, but is his red suit still firing on all thrusters?  Did the sequel rise above the quality of the original for Jay and Parris, or was this just a so-so offering that could have been better?   And most importantly, how awesome is Scarlett Johansson in tight clothes?   We give you a spoiler-heavy look at Iron Man 2, covering what we liked, what we didn't like, and more. Finally, we jump into our continuing discussion on LOST.  As ABC's hit show draws closer to its finish line, we talk about our increased disappointment over events in the show, the diminished impact of the show's writing, and what we think could have been improved.  We also talk about our theories for the show's ending, what we would have liked to see happen, and theorize on what contributed to the collapse of this show's universe. This week- the most unwanted show music ever.  We also discuss the decimation of the 1up network (actually it was much worse than that), failing Zunes, and the death knell for AoC.

The TechWeekly Podcast

A near crisis between Time Warner and Viacom was avoided in the last few hours of 2008. According to the Financial Times, Viacom, an American Media giant which owns such Television networks as CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV, and Comedy Central had been demanding higher fees from TW, an American cable provider for their programming. Viacom initiated the scuffle in demanding that Time Warner pay more for the channels that Viacom provided, citing declining advertising revenues as the main reason for these cost increases. Viacom threatened to cut off the transmission of their channels to time warner, leaving Time Warner subscribers in the dark, and without the ability to watch shows like South Park, Survivor, and The Late Show.Time warner initially dismissed the rate increases, countering with a threat to educate consumers how to watch shows over the internet and therefore cheating Viacom out of even more ad revenue. But thankfully an agreement was reached in the final hours of 2008, and we can all have a sigh of relief knowing that Time Warner Subscribers will be able to watch the semi- entertaining shows provided by Viacom._______________________________________________________________________________E Commerce declined this year with the rest of the economy as expected this holiday season. According to arstechnia, an economic report released by comScore stated that total online spending in 2008 was roughly 25.54 billion dollars, down three percent from last year. Although the declines among online retailers were not as drastic as the declines in brick and morter stores, the results were suprising considering that many analysts thought that ecommerce was relatively immune to economic declines. _______________________________________________________________________________Microsoft zunes worldwide stopped working just after midnight December 31, 2008. According to The Wall Street Journal, all first gen 30 GB zunes Suffered a catastrophic failure coming in to the new year, by which all Microsoft zunes locked up and would not function. Microsoft was quick to respond with a statement, advising consumers to let their Zunes battery drain and to wait for a day before trying to restart their MP3 Player. Later, Microsoft released a statement saying that the glitch was most likely caused by a time bug having to do with the fact that 2008 was indeed a leap year.Despite the poor economy, music sales continued to grow in 2008. According to arstechnia, music sales in 2008 grew a reasonable 10.5 percent, but down from a sales growth amount of around 14 percent last year. The NPD Survey that analyzes yearly sales numbers for the music industry also pointed out the fact that physical CD purchases in 2008 continued to decline, as the popularity of online music stores such as Apples Itunes increased. One interesting and rather suprising tidbit of information revealed in the NPD Survey was that the sale of Vinyl records increased by a staggering 89 percent. Seems as though baby boomers still like the sound of those old records, and want even more._______________________________________________________________________________The first commercial Space Port has the go ahead to be built in New Mexico. According to arstechnia, The group behind the Spaceport America Project got the go ahead from the New Mexico state government to build the historic spaceport after the group signed a 20 year lease with Virgin Galactic, a private company that gives people with several thousand extra dollars to spend a brief tour of orbital space. The new spaceport will serve as the origin and destination for future flights of Virgins new spaceship2._______________________________________________________________________________Toyota Motors may be on the way to developing a fully- solar powered automobile. According to Daily Tech, the Japanese auto maker is looking to add to Its line of efficient vehicles by adding a fully solar powered car to its lineup. The declining economy as well as falling gas prices have wreaked havoc on sales for the Japanese auto maker, affecting mostly the hybrid portion of the car makers lineup. Despite these setbacks, It seems as though Toyota is going to push ahead with the development of a fully solar car, which would be a real win in the ecological areana._______________________________________________________________________________Want a cheap Iphone? Well look no further than your local Wal Mart. The retail giant announced that It would be selling Iphones for less, and they followed through. According to Wal Marts website, the eight gb verson goes for 197 and the 16 gb verson goes for 297. Although only a savings of two dollars, wal mart plans to ship the device to several thousand stores nation wide, making it more convinent for many people to purchase the device._______________________________________________________________________________What you should do to make sure that you get the most out of your tech in 09.• Make sure you have virus protection, make sure it is up to date, do a full system scan.• Defragment your hard drive.• Get rid of unused programs.• Backup your data.• Clean your computer.

News Items For the week ending Friday 5th October 2007 Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is coming Macworld.co.uk news is reporting that rumours are rife that we can expect Leopard to land on the 26th of October. Also, details released from testers of the latest pre-release version, list min system requirements of a Mac running a G4 867MHz or faster processor, which makes several older Mac models incapable of running the forthcoming operating system. iTunes killer??? Amazon.com launches mp3 download store - currently in Beta for US customers only. Prices are only $0.89 for a DRM free, 256bit mp3 track and recent albums priced around $8.99. Simple download manager app to easily transfer this music to your iTunes library and then to sync with iPod. Amazon have DRM free music from other labels as well as EMI - iTunes plus tracks are DRM free music from EMI owned labels only, and they’re priced at $1.29! So cheaper, better quality, DRM free mp3's from one of the biggest names in music retail. Is iPhone launch for France delayed due to French unlocking laws? Reported on several news sites including engadgetmobile and Appleinsider. Quote from the French Daily, Los Echos "The difficulties stem from a French law that would require the Apple handset to be sold both with and without contracts. This law would reportedly undermine the iPhone's exclusivity for Orange and Apple's demand of up to 30 percent of voice and data revenues." Discussion went on to iPhone purchasing. Mike B mentioned that information seen said that you couldn’t pay for an iPhone by cash in the UK. Quote from The Carphone Warehouse iPhone Eligibility statement: “To give everyone a chance, there'll be a limit of two iPhones per customer in-store and online. Oh, and we're afraid we can't accept cash.” And from this weeks news, we have The Good, The Bad & The Ugly THE GOOD The Cloud offer new deal WiFi access for iPod touch users. Subscribe and register with an iPod Touch and for £3.99 p/m you’ll unlimited (there’s bound to be the usual FUP caveat) WiFi access at 7500 hotspots around the UK. Pretty good vfm, as their normal unlimited account is £11.99 pm. iPod Touch users need to sign-up for the service at www.thecloud.co.uk/iPod THE BAD New iMacs plagued by interface freezing issues Users have reported that Apple's latest iMacs suffer from a flaw that locks up the interface, rendering the system all but inert until a reboot. The system will look and behave as if it's running but is totally unresponsive to any touching of the controls, according to the reports. UPDATED AS WE WERE RECORDING Apple has issued a statement confirming that some iMacs are suffering screen freezes since a recent software update was installed - but promises a software repair soon. Apple explained: "We are tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update which corrects it as soon as we can - most likely later this month. We apologise for the inconvenience." THE UGLY - New Zune 2 to take on Apple's iPod The new Zunes have a familiar design but new interface and a controller nicknamed the squircle. Microsoft has launched three new models of its Zune digital media player in an effort to compete with Apple's iPod. The players - which come in 4GB, 8GB and 80GB, but although the Brown has gone, the new Green is pretty awful. The goal of the Shiira Project is to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari. All source code used in this software is publicly available. Software Review Saft v8.3.11 This week’s Cool Tool scores a coveted 5 Golden Bites Download available from http://haoli.dnsalias.com/Saft/index.html It’s also featured on our favourite Safari resource site, http://pimpmysafari.com/ Tightly integrated into your Safari browser, Saft is so much more than a plugin/extension. Gordon And Mike's ICT Podcast

Have you ever been working collaboratively on a document, either with one other person or multiple people? Have you been frustrated looking through your computer or your email for the most recent version or even an older version that that has something you've since deleted? Worse yet, have you ever been looking for that file wondering if the most recent version is on my work computer, my laptop, my home computer, my email or any number of usb drives I have laying around - or even worse yet on someone else's computer. What about collaboration - sending a file around by email, everyone adds their comments and you have to try to put it all together - what a hassle. And who can stand to read documents with track changes turned on. Well there's a new class of applications called webware coming to the rescue! Gordon: Mike - what is webware? Webware is an online software application that trys to replicate the richness and responsiveness of a traditional desktop application. What's really made this even remotely possible is the widespread adoption of high-speed or broadband internet and a new architecture for the Web (Web 2.0 and AJAX - we'll talk about these more some other time). Google Docs & Spreadsheets is an example of webware - an online analogue of the ubiquitous Microsoft Office. Gordon: I know we've been using Google Docs and Spreadsheets - can you give our audience an overview of how these applications function? Google Docs & Spreadsheets is a fairly full-featured online word processor and spreadsheet editor that enables you, your colleagues and your students to create, store and share documents and spreadsheets. It's this sharing - the collaboration - that's really exciting! Sharing enables you to decide who can access and edit documents, and even better, all changes are kept in a document revisions history. You can create documents from scratch or upload existing documents and spreadsheets. Other than a web browser and a network connection, there's no software required, and all your documents are stored safely online and accessible from any network-connected computer. Some of the neat features include being able to save documents to Word, spreadsheets to Excel and either (documents or spreadsheets) to HTML or PDF. The Spreadsheets even have a panel that allows collaborators to have a live chat regarding the spreadsheet. A particularly useful feature - AUTOSAVE - means you never have to remember to save your work! How are people using it? Teachers are publishing announcements about upcoming assignments and monitoring student progress via the revision history. In the revision history, you can see clearly who contributed to what assignment and when; if a student says he or she worked on a given project for five hours, it will be documented (no more "dog ate my homework" excuses). Additionally, faculty are using GDS to keep track of grades, attendance, student projects and assignments. Students are using GDS to stay organized and work more effectively. Google Docs & Spreadsheets helps promote group work and editing skills, and encourages multiple revisions and peer editing. Students can go online to collaborate with other students, teachers, parents, relatives and tutors, and enter updates anytime from anywhere. And through their revisions history, kids can check how they've revised a document and who has helped. Not to be outdone, Google spreadsheets allows students to track their grades, assignments, semester goals, baseball statistics, car expenses, or anything else that interests them.   Gordon: Can you give us some more examples of how these can be used? Consider the example of a high school English and journalism teacher who uses Google Docs & Spreadsheets to help facilitate students' work and has found significant improvement in their writing.  Among the reasons she gives, GDS:                -     facilitates peer editing and revising,                -     allows for multiple versions of an assignment,                -     allows her to see who students collaborated with and when,                -     prevents students from losing documents either by failing to save or having crashed hard drives, and                -     provides 24/7 access to their documents from anywhere in the world. Adds the teacher - "It has changed the way I teach writing... for the better!!"Here are some interesting uses other people have found for this tool: http://www.google.com/google-d-s/tour5.html Imagine the way you could use GDS in your work - collaborating with colleagues to develop curriculum, a budget or even complete committee work - the possibilities are endless - take it for a spin and let me know what you think at mqaissaunee@brookdalecc.edu Mike: Gordon, there's been 3 new products released in the last week - the Zune, the Wii and the PS3. Can you give us a quick update? Zune Microsoft's Zune digital media player came out a week ago and has had mixed reviews. Positives: Looks including color choices of white, gray or brown Connectivity: 802.11 b/g with range up to 30 feet  Zune's wireless song-sharing functions (many are calling this aa killer app), which allow users to digitally "loan" songs to other Zunes. Those loaned songs disappear from the devices after three plays. The song-swapping capability has been dubbed "squirting." Microsoft is working on other uses for squirting, and has called the song exchange a good first step in using the technology. Although the wireless sharing does not allow users to expand their music libraries permanently, it could give Zune owners a way to try out music and see if they like certain songs enough to buy them. Negatives: Weight, which is heavy for a digital media player, coming in at 5.6 ounces. Critical mass is not there yet - yes you can do file sharing with other Zune users but how many people do you know that have bought one?Time will tell! Mike: How about the Sony PS3 and the Nintendo Wii? Looking at www.gametalk.com and the Next Generation Console Debate forum where people discuss  Xbox 360 vs Wii vs PS3 you get the usual fans - and most of these people are pretty dedicated to their favorite platform. I (or correction - my kids) got a Wii and I get it play it sometimes. When I do get to play it - it is incredible. The controller - what I like to refer to as the user interface - is incredible. It's wireless and what I would probably call like a wand or a television remote control. You swing the wireless controller like a baseball bat or golf club or tennis racket. You can even simulate the throwing of a bowling ball. You can also attach the optional nunchuck controller and play two handed games like boxing. On the gametalk website there are lots of people complaining about sore arms - I know you sent me a tongue in cheek link written at Scientific American titled: Could the Nintendo Wii Reverse the Childhood Obesity Trend? Based on my own personal experience I think it could. Yesterday I threw 120 pitches in 7 innings and ended up having to ice my arm!:) Seriously - it can and does provide an excellent workout. I'm waiting for Nintendo to come out with Velcro sensors you wrap around your ankles. This would allow both the feel and arms to move - think of the potential -  DDR for all 4 limbs!! The Nintendo is about half the price of the high end PS3. I have not used a PS3 so can't provide much comment on usability. The control has some limited motion capabilities but not like the Wii. The graphics are supposed to be incredible. Mike: What about the Microsoft Xbox 360? The 360 is sorta old news believe it or not. It launched in March of 2005 so it's tough to compare to the new products from Nintendo and Sony. We'll have to put together a separate podcast comparing these products once my arm gets better!!!
