This Sunday (04/19/2020) my guest was Louis Boria—AKA Brooklyn Boy Knits. Louis is a self-taught fiber artist who has been in the industry for 12 years. In 2017, Louis went viral after being photographed on a NYC subway by actress/singer, Frenchie Davis. With his newfound fame, Louis decided to use his social media platform to do something positive and so began working with local New York public schools, teaching children to knit.  He has worked closely with with campaigns such as Hat Not Hate, Cancer Awareness Programs at New York's Mt. Sinai Hospital and with LGBTQIA young adults by promoting knitting as a therapeutic outlet. As well as working in the community, Louis is a knitwear Designer of both custom pieces and knitting patterns that range in style from streetwear design to runway couture. In April 2019 Louis did his first Tedx Talk, "Making The Most of Your Moment". Later that year, he became one of the founding members of Soho Publishing's Diversity Advisory Council which was set up to address the lack of diversity and inclusion in the fiber arts industry.  He has also taught at STITCHES and spoke as part of a diversity panel at STITCHES Midwest 2019. Louis believes in building up our community one stitch at a time. Louis is currently recovering from the Coronavirus… and I'm so pleased he could join on the show so you could hear from this remarkable and creative individual.

The farm business is called Alpaca Pines and their website can be found here. There was a what I called a wood ball winder that I was unable to find online to show you. I have found out since that this item has another use, which is to hold the ball of yarn wound on to it as you knit. So the concept for it I think is to wind the yarn on it from a skein and then let it sit near you as you knit, it will rotate release the yarn. No balls of yarn rolling away from you. I was not able to find any 1500 yard one dye lot skeins of yarn online, like I saw in the market. I think this concept is a custom dye project, so if interested contact your favorite dyer, see if they can purchase the yarn in the large skein and dye it for you.

On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about wool and texture and embroidery with my guest, Sue Spargo.  Sue is an internationally renowned designer, teacher, and textile artist. She’s authored several books including Creative Stitching and teaches on Craftsy as well as keeping up a rigorous travel schedule. 35 of her quilts were exhibited at the International Quilt Show in Houston in 2017 and in Chicago in 2018. Born in Zambia and raised in South Africa, Sue’s work is influenced by the color, energy, and simplicity of traditional African design. Today, her business is based in Ohio where a staff that includes several of her children prepare and ship a wide range of hand dyed and mill dyed wools, threads, kits, notions, and patterns from SueSpargo.com. We talk about Sue's collaboration with Wonderfil, her intense travel and teaching schedule, how she has successfully brought three of her four children into her business, self-publishing, and more. Sue doesn't sell her quilts, but she's still managed to build a wonderful business selling her work in many other ways. I hope you enjoy hearing her story. +++++ This episode is sponsored by STITCHES Midwest 2018. On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we're talking about the business of fabric with my guest, Aaron Hoffman and Hailey Hoffman Chisholm of Hoffman California Fabrics. Together, Aaron and Hailey represent the fourth generation of the Hoffman family working in the company that will hit its 94th anniversary later this year.  Hailey works as marketing and sales associate. Her mother, Robin Hoffman Haack, is the chief financial officer. She is the youngest Hoffman working at the company. Aaron launched the Me+You brand to offer hand-dyed solids and batiks featuring minimalist graphic designs over solid backgrounds. His goal was to make batiks more appealing to quilters pursuing the modern aesthetic in their projects. Aaron’s father is Tony Hoffman, the company CEO. Walter Hoffman, who still works daily in the office, is grandfather to Aaron and Hailey. Hoffman California Fabrics is deeply rooted in surfing culture and popularized Hawaiin surf prints in American fashion beginning in the 1950s. The company also introduced batiks to the quilting market.  +++++ This episode is sponsored by STITCHES Midwest 2018.  Exclusively for While She Naps listeners, get 20% OFF STITCHES Midwest 2018 classes and events by visiting www.STITCHES.events/Midwest and entering the coupon code MIDWEST18WSN at check-out. I'll be there, will you?   PalKal 2015 This is the biggest KAL of the year for Actually Knitting!  Here are the rules: Cast on: June 1 Bind off: September 1 The basic idea is to support a podcaster you listen to or watch by knitting one of their patterns and/or using their yarns for your project. You can also use a project bag by a podcaster! The design, yarn/fiber and/or project bag must be from a knitting/crochet/fiber podcaster. (Not all 3, just one of those to qualify) Use the chatter thread for discussion. Make suggestions. There are TONS of podcasts out there and almost no one knows about all of them, so if you know of a podcaster designer/yarnie/bag maker, feel free to share with us! You are encouraged to take advantage of the coupon codes offered by our sponsors, but you are not limited to those podcasters for the KAL. Sponsors and coupon codes will be announced in an upcoming episode. Please post finished objects in the non-chatter thread and include a link to the podcaster you are supporting. Enter as many projects as you like. Each project gets a separate post in the non-chatter thread. A note about project bags: a project bag may only be entered into the contest one time for an entry. (You can’t just keep using a podcaster project bag over and over and entering the contest that way). You must be a member of the Actually Knitting Podcast Group to win. Have fun supporting a podcaster designer or yarnie! Please do not chatter in the non-chatter thread. It makes it more difficult to draw a winner! Use the tag PALKAL2015 on Ravelry and #palkal2015 on Instagram In addition, I've decided that you can use WIPS for this KAL. Yay!    We have some great sponsors and wonderful prizes that I can’t wait to share with you all! Let’s make some plans for summer knitting!    The coupon codes will be listed on the podcast and are available here as well:     Alana Dakos from Never Not Knitting, use PALKAL for 25% off of any PDF pattern (not books)   Megan from Stockinette Zombies, use ActuallyKnittingPalKal for 30% off through the end of July     Elizabeth Green Musselman from Dark Matter Knits, use the code PalKal15 for 20% off of any of her self-published patterns, through September 1st.     Daniela from Caffeinated Knitting Video Podcast, use the code ACTUALLYCAFFEINATED for 50% off her patterns through September 1.  Angela from the Revelations of a Delusional Knitter Podcast, use the code PALKAL2015 for 25% off of her patterns.   Sarah Shoo from In a Sknit is offering her new pattern, Whiz Bang Socks, for $1.50 with the code ActuallyKnitting15 Christina from A Knitter's Life Video Podcast, use the code PALKAL2015 for 1$ off of her patterns, through September 1.   Gina from Brownie Knits Podcast, use the code palkal25 for 25% off your entire order.   Thanks also for the generous (now expired) coupon codes from: Jennifer Lassonde from Down Cellar Studio Emily from Fibertown Knits Anne from the Carolina Fiber Girls Allie from Caffeinated Knitting Dianne from Suburban Stitcher     Prizes:  Jan B. Episode 35: Audition Process   Thanks so much for the lovely iTunes reviews and star ratings!    Knits in Rehearsal   Viajante by Martina Behm I am now officially 1/3 done with this gigantic project.   Yarn: Miss Babs Kilimanjaro in the Believable color way Needles: US Size 3 and US Size 4 Signature Convertibles   Whiz Bang Socks by Sarah Shoo Sarah is half of the lovely duo behind the In a Sknit Video Podcast.  Yarn: Yarn Ink Sparkle Fingering in Oblivion Needles: Size 1 Karbonz Fixed Circulars   Vanilla Socks Yarn: Berry Colorful Yarnings Saturated Sock in the Shades of Grey colorway Needles: Size 1 Addi Turbo circular needles   Astonish Top by Katy Banks I talked a little bit about some issues I had due to the fact that I never actually got gauge.   Yarn: Knit Picks Lindy Chain in Sagebrush and Honey  Needles: Size 2 Addi Lace Turbos   Auditioning Knits  Instead of talking about actual patterns I'm auditioning, I talked a little bit about my process of selecting items to shop for when I am going to a festival or other yarnie event. I talked a little about how I use the bundles feature in Ravelry to keep all of my patterns organized.    I mentioned that I am still using the Stash2go App and really loving the features. I also talked about the one pattern that I am FOR SURE shopping for at Stitches Midwest this year, the Blue Sands Cardigan, but I want to do it with some neon in it!   So far I have 10 (10??) patterns on my list for Stitches shopping.    Knitting News, Notes and Events   The winner of the last giveaway for The Gleener still hasn't contacted me, so I hope she does soon! Listen to episode 34 to see if you were the lucky one!    PalKal 2015   We are well into the 2nd month now and I'm so excited every time I see a new Finished Object. Remember to keep the finished object thread chatter free, if possible.    Thanks so much to all of the sponsors who are still providing or have provided coupon codes!    Make sure to check out the Ravelry group for the pertinent threads. Thanks so much to all of our sponsors both of coupon codes and prizes.     This is the biggest KAL of the year for Actually Knitting! The coupon codes will be listed on the podcast and are available here as well:   Dianne from Suburban Stitcher, use code PALKAL2015 for 10% off of any order May 25th through July 31st   Alana Dakos from Never Not Knitting, use PALKAL for 25% off of any PDF pattern (not books)   Megan from Stockinette Zombies, use ActuallyKnittingPalKal for 30% off through the end of July     Elizabeth Green Musselman from Dark Matter Knits, use the code PalKal15 for 20% off of any of her self-published patterns, through September 1st. Thanks also for the generous (now expired) coupon codes from: Jennifer Lassonde from Down Cellar Studio Emily from Fibertown Knits Anne from the Carolina Fiber Girls Allie from Caffeinated Knitting   Prizes:  Jan B. GIVE ME A BREAK!   Other News and Notes Running updates: I'm really enjoying the power of the group when running. It just makes it easier!   I also purchased a running hydration belt, I'll be happy to let you know what I think if you are interested in such things.    I finished reading The Martian by Andy Weir and I highly recommend it!   I'm back to reading Written in my Own Heart's Blood by Diana Gabaldon, mostly because I finished the Starz TV series that goes with the first book in the series.    I also started reading a very silly beach type read, Shopaholic to the Stars (which I called by the wrong title) by Sophie Kinsella. The books in this series are really silly but they don't disappoint.      Thanks for listening!

Nellie, Seamless Yoked Sweater, Retreat Registration!  Nellie, Seamless Yoked Baby Sweater, Retreat Registration!   Pipeliner Notes: A correction in last week’s episode. The site for rescuing macramé owls is www.macrameowl.com. The link was correct in the show notes but I made it plural when I said it on the podcast. My apologies to all macramé owls out there and their rescuers.   Deaf Smith, Laurel’s Kitchen, The Moosewood Cookbook were classic cookbooks in the 70's and 80's. In my oven today: Whole Wheat Bread, Homemade Granola, and Baked Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Oatmeal from the food blog Perfecting the Pairing. I substituted raisins for chocolate chips. Nature Notes Satu mentioned that bats carry rabies and that is true. If you see a bat behaving strangely then beware.  A hawk posed for me and I still had trouble identifying it. A Cooper's Hawk is about the size of a crow and has a rounded tail. The Sharp-shinned hawk is smaller and has a squared off tail. Sent to me by Goldybear: Autumn by Emily Dickinson The morns are meeker than they were,The nuts are getting brown; The berry's cheek is plumper,The rose is out of town. The maple wears a gayer scarf,The field a scarlet gown.Lest I should be old-fashioned,I'll put a trinket on. Needle Notes Nellie by Donna Higgins Purchase pattern at Stitches Midwest 2010 and the yarn is Knit Picks Organic Cotton. Calls for Sublime Organic Cotton DK The only difficult part of this sweater is the crocheted flower closure. Difficult for me, that is. Seamless Yoked Baby Sweater by Carole Barenys Free Pattern. Top down raglan with running strands that make a pattern on the yoke, cuffs, and bottom. If I knit this pattern again I would probably add another button hole on the yoke and then not put buttons below that. In The Pipeline Afterthought Heel Hiking Socks using pattern by Laura Linneman Nubby Noro Mittens, actually have finished.
