On December 13th, 2008, Tony Hoffman was paroled by the California Department of Correction after serving a two-year sentence for a drug-related robbery. While incarcerated, Tony set four goals: Race BMX professionally, go to the Olympics, start a non-profit called the Freewheel Project, and become a professional mental health and substance abuse speaker.Today, he's done it all… and so much more.Tony's youth was riddled with the dichotomy of athletic success mixed with substance abuse. During his senior year at Clovis High School he was featured on the cover of BMXer Magazine, and was sponsored by Fox Racing, Spy Sunglasses and Airwalk Shoes. But eventually, Tony's mental health eventually deteriorated to a point where he could no longer thrive in sports and he took to life on the streets. He battled addiction, violence, and homelessness, and at one point, was even the victim of a robbery and stabbing. His life of crime eventually led him to prison… and that's where everything changed. A chance encounter with an unexpected mentor would change his understanding of spirituality forever, and flip the switch on his outlook on life.Since parolling from prison, Tony has tirelessly worked towards achieving his goals and the dreams he'd set out for while incarcerated. He raced BMX professionally for several years and continued on to coach Brooke Crain to a 4th place finish at the Rio Olympic Games, accomplishing his dream of going to the Olympics. The Freewheel Project was very successful for many years helping thousands of youth through action sports before moving on to pursuing a very demanding national speaking career. Today Tony is an author, an owner of pH Wellness drug and alcohol treatment facility, and one of the world's most requested mental health and substance use speakers.************Show Notes:A big thank you to Tony for joining the podcast and sharing your inspiring story. Follow Tony on Instagram @tonymhoffman or at his website TonyHoffmanSpeaking.com.************Make sure to follow Jamie @jamiehess on Instagram for news & updates, and visit our companion Instagram account @gratitudeology for a sneak peek into the personal moments discussed on the show.************The Gratitudeology Podcast theme music is by HYLLS, performed by Nadia Ali @thenadiaaliAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

He quickly climbed the ranks and earned sponsorships from some of the biggest brands in the industry. A lot of his motivation at the time was to prove himself to his peers and create a better life than his parents had.  In Senior year of high school, Tony was introduced to drugs and he was quickly hooked on oxy. Within just a few years, Tony became homeless and his addiction was crippling him. After losing the support of his friends, he ultimately reached rock bottom.  One day, he had a life changing moment where he was told that God would give him 3 tests and if he did not change his ways, he would be punished. Sure enough, Tony was pulled over 3 times in 4 days, and then was finally thrown into jail with an armed robbery charge.  While in jail, Tony became very introspective on his life and attempted to understand who he truly was and how he could grow as a man. It was in his jail cell where he began to have these tough conversations and invest in himself.  While in jail, he told himself that he would get back on his bike and reach the Olympics. After released from jail, his BMX career quickly came to an end due to injuries, but then he began to coach.  Tony was a coach at the 2016 Olmpics in Rio and his athlete placed 4th in the world.  Tony is now a leading speaker in his space and spends over 250 days out of the year traveling the world to speak inspiration to others. He also owns a treatment center where fitness and mindset are at the center of these patients recovery journey.

After years of addiction, Tony found himself in prison ready to change the game through discipline, structure and routine.  It started with brushing his teeth, making his bed, and organizing his cell.  It led to workouts, setting goals, and creating a mindset that he'd carry with him upon reentering society.  16 years later, he speaks to high school students around the world, delivered a truly memorable and reverberating TED Talk, and explains how he went from prison to the Olympics.  IG: @tonymhoffmantonyhoffmanspeaking.comphwellness.com

Youth drug abuse is a growing concern. According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, opioid abuse is now considered a national public health emergency. Since 1999, overdose deaths have increased by 500% among 15 to 24-year-olds. In 2021 alone, more than 1,000 adolescents died as a result of a drug overdose. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends screening children for substance use starting as early as nine years of age. What is causing youth drug use and misuse in the U.S.? How do trauma and mental illness affect students' disposition to substance abuse? And how can schools reach students who resort to drugs as a way to cope? In this episode, Kevin discusses youth mental health and substance abuse with former BMX Elite Pro and founder of pH Wellness and the Freewheel Project, Tony Hoffman. This is, What I Want to Know.

In part 2-part of our conversation with Tony, we discuss how Tony is upset by the irresponsible ways that the mental health and drug crisis are being handled. As well as how important vulnerability is for everyone, especially men who desire to create true connections with others. Also, we talked about the moral responsibilities as they relate to ham reduction and helping addicts in need. We talk about how these issues directly relate to a rise in substance abuse and what Tony thinks can be done to prevent losing any more lives to the disease of addiction and substance abuse. On December 13th, 2008, Tony Hoffman was paroled by the California Department of Corrections after serving a two-year sentence for a drug-related robbery. While incarcerated, Tony set four goals: Race BMX professionally, go to the Olympics, start a non-profit called the Freewheel Project, and become a professional mental health and substance abuse speaker. During his senior year at Clovis High School, he was featured on the cover of BMXer Magazine and was sponsored by Fox Racing, Spy Sunglasses, and Airwalk Shoes. On the surface, Tony's path seemed destined for stardom. However, in reality, Tony experienced crippling anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideations. Tony's substance use began during his senior year, leading to the deterioration of his mental health and opioid addiction soon followed. Due to his misuse of Oxycontin, & other drugs, a life of addiction, crime, homelessness, and incarceration became his reality. Since paroling prison, Tony has tirelessly worked towards achieving his goals and the dreams he'd set out for while incarcerated. Tune in here to this episode of Grits, Guts, and Determination, The Leadville Race Series Podcast, a leading authority for all things Leadville! Host Cole Chlouber, son of race founder Ken Chlouber, takes us on a story-telling journey of the 38-year rich history of this race. We learn all the tips, tricks, and stories from the Leadville community members! Joining us today is retired colonel Tony Hoffman. Not only has he towed that line in the Leadville 100, he has also taken his mission further by starting a team of veterans to go against veteran suicide. To kick off the conversation, Cole asks Tony to share how Leadville found him. He first learned about Leadville in 1995 when he was stationed in the military and visited the town of Leadville. However, the race didn't really find him until 2013 when he chose to take the plunge and participate in the Leadville 100 run. Through this and other subsequent races, he gained a newfound appreciation for all of Leadville's history. His view regarding his personal marathon completion is quality over quantity. Shifting gears, Tony discusses his career in the service. He initially enlisted for only two years with the plan to later attend college, but was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy and received deployment from his home state of Minnesota. He summarizes the privilege it was to serve and the discipline aspect of the job, which circles back into running. Marathoning, which Tony began in 1990, has always been a constant stress reliever and dedication for him. The idea for the veteran running team came about over a few beers with his military colleagues to challenge each other to partake in marathons. The first team consisted of 7 people and was completed as a team who raised $7500 to fight against the veteran suicide epidemic. In 2016, they linked up with the Kansas City nonprofit Warriors Ascent who helps veterans and first responders overcome PTSD through a 5 day program. The team will enter its 8th year of raising money for the non-profit at the Leadville race. To date, they have raised $282,000. Tony has written two books around his Leadville race experiences: Embracing Grit and Embracing Teamwork and Grit. They contain tips for listeners for conquering the Leadville 100 and chronicle the formation of Team Leadville and their mission of stopping veteran suicide. He shares advice for being successful as an athlete, what his nutrition plan looks like during the race, which equals 2,500 calories per hour, and the key pieces of gear. Finally, he shares what comes to mind when he hears the word Leadville. Thanks for tuning in! Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe, and we hope to see you on the line in August!

While in the UK, I managed to record a couple of Podcasts. Last week while down in London, I met up and recorded the first one with Tom Lynch and the following week I will post the one I did with Keith Duly (Jump Club), both of which I really enjoyed doing. Tom Lynch is one of the riders in the UK that inspired both me coming through the amateur ranks in the 80s and many others in the UK during his time, with his riding style and coming from behind for wins. If you were around who can forget in 1986 when Tom won the Superclass European Championship finals in Weiterstadt, Germany at just 16 years old against the Powerful Dutch Amev Team. Tom shares his early days training and taking racing seriously at a young age, getting on Patterson and battling for the UK titles in probably one of the hardest UK age groups in history with the likes of Stu Diggens, Darren Wood, Whoppa Watkins, Steve Greaves, Lee Alexander, Dave Morris, Tim Print and the names go on. Tom talks about winning 15x at the 85 Euros in Spain fresh on Redline (Patterson frame with Redline stickers), going there with a plan, being in the zone and executing it and becoming the European Champion. Tom talks Kelloggs, getting on Robinson and working with Tony Hoffman turning Superclass at an early age and changing teams to ASR. He battled the likes of Darrin Stock, Andy Welsh and a fresh and hungry Neal Wood when he turned Superclass. He also went up against the European talented riders from Xavier Redois, Eric Minozzi and the strong Dutch Superclass contingent. Tom talks about getting on Haro racing, Mike King and then getting on Elf and turning racing more into fun as he transitioned to working as he headed into the 90s. We chat about LRP (London Rocket People) the Jive guys, riding with Will Smyth, Rom and early Backyard Jams. Of course we talk about Tom working at the London Ambulance Service HQ in Waterloo (Cycle Team Hub) as a Cycle Response Unit Operations Officer and all about the programs. He deservingly received an MBE and meeting both the Queen and Prince Charles. Tom was the first official British Cycling BMX Coach. He shares the early days of the program with a young Shanaze Reade, Liam and Charlie Phillips, the Murray brothers, Joey Gough and so much more.

After overcoming drug addiction that led to homelessness and prison, Tony Hoffman went on to acquire many great accolades. His goal is to motivate his audience through the methods he personally used to overcome his struggles into the one choice that can change the rest of their life for the better. Learn about the quote that Tony discovered in prison that unlocked the mental shackles he had placed on himself, and about Tony's journey out of addiction and despair into a life of service and gratitude. Tony grew up in a typical middle class family where his parents worked all the time. His parents' absence very often meant that Tony had to figure things out on his own. He was naturally gifted at sports and fell in love with basketball despite being short. The biggest challenge as an athlete for Tony was that he didn't have the life skills necessary to be coachable while growing up. Tony struggled with mental health issues because of the hole in his life where he needed his parents to be. Tony talks a lot about being 12 years old, which was the time in his life when he started to form his perspective on the world. His social anxiety led to self-loathing. He confessed his thoughts to his mother, but her inability to handle the situation only made things worse. Tony didn't want to be treated like he was better than other people. He had to hire a sports psychologist to help him accept that he was gifted, and beating someone in sports doesn't mean you are better than them. He ignored many teachers who tried to teach him about life when he was younger because he wasn't ready to learn at that time. Tony's first basketball coach was one of them. Tony quit racing at 18 to take a computer networking job in San Francisco. It was at that time he started experimenting with marijuana. This process of experimentation led to an oxycontin addiction which eventually resulted in Tony being a part of an armed house invasion of his best friend's house to steal pills. Tony likens an opioid withdrawal to suffering from a flu that's 100 times worse than usual, and you can get rid of the symptoms with a single pill. Tony's rock bottom occurred a few years later where he was strung out on heroin and meth, and his brokenness made him lose all concern for himself. The drugs that he thought were fixing his pain were killing him, and he knew that and didn't care. Tony had a spiritual experience on Jan 21, 2007 after being sentenced to prison. Tony tells people that he had been in a mental prison for 23 years, one that he created himself. Most people have created a mental prison for themselves without realizing it. While he was in jail, Tony saw a quote on the ceiling of his cell that changed his life. Tony realized that his gift was given to him for a reason and he became committed to getting out of prison and making the most of it. He decided that he would commit to doing the little things well and that would lead to making the big things better. Tony changed his narrative from quitting everything he ever tried to knowing that he is deserving of love and passing it on to other people.  Human beings seem to be the only beings on the planet that only take and rarely give back. Tony feels like that is the source of his discontent, and he can only feel fulfilled by giving and service to others. The pandemic has been challenging for Tony since he shifted so much of what he was doing to public speaking, but as long as he knows what his values are they will always lead him to where he is effective. Focusing on the house, or the car, or the wealth will always lead to an empty well. Understanding your core values is important because they are the bedrock for who you are. When you fall out of alignment with those core values, that's when things fall apart. Tony views going to prison and being stuck with himself as a gift. It forced him to assess the times in his life when he felt happy and what his core values are, specifically determination, focus, compassion, and empathy. Being in prison highlights what really has value in your life. It shows how valuable your time is, your ability to walk and breathe and communicate with people in a way that inspires them. Tony's definition of discipline is doing good work even when you don't feel like it. This plays into Tony's morning routine where it's very regulated. One thing he focuses on in particular, is that when he's in a vehicle he spends as much time as possible meditating. Tony's sobriety model is based in spirituality and honesty. He needs to be able to be honest with himself and others, and quiet time is how he connects with his true self. Committing to be honest with yourself is the foundation for being a better person. There are many paths to sobriety. Use what works for you. If you're struggling right now, talk to somebody who knows what you want help with. Sometimes something as simple as a conversation is all that stands between you and what you want. Tony's comeback story goes to his best friend KP. KP has struggled with addiction just like Tony and has put in the work to get sober and has picked himself back up each time he fell down.   Mentioned in this Episode: @tonymhoffman on Instagram  Facebook.com/TonyHoffmanSpeaking One Choice podcast

Functional medicine stool testing can be a helpful tool when it comes to uncovering gut health issues or imbalances in bacteria that might be contributing to bloating, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, brain fog, and everything in between. But are functional medicine stool tests validated, and how do they compare to traditional stool tests? Dr. David Brady and Tony Hoffman from Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory, which is the lab that provides the popular GI-MAP stool test, help to answer these questions and clear up some of the confusion surrounding functional medicine stool test methodology. We also talk about the importance of contextualizing test results, and how clinicians can combine the information they get from a functional medicine stool test with an individual’s symptoms, history, and other test results to make better decisions about treatment. https://drruscio.com/is-functional-medicine-stool-testing-validated  My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/  If you're in need of clinical support, please visit https://austinfm.com/  Looking for more? DSL’s GI-MAP stool test is, as CEO Tony Hoffman states, “a clinician diagnostic tool;” it’s not a microbiome test. Yes, of course the GI-MAP looks at the microbiome, but it's not a broad sweep of the myriad of bugs taking up residence. Rather, it’s a carefully curated investigation of organisms with demonstrated imbalance potential, be it pathogenic or dysbiotic in nature. The test is designed to be user-friendly, interpreted rapidly, logically, providing clearly actionable data that, when addressed, gets results. I’ve known Tony for years; we were both involved in the development of the first stool test using PCR analysis offered to clinicians. He’s brilliant, fun to listen to, and offers loads of pearls in this conversation. Take a listen, share, comment, and let us know what you think!
