The Strange Discovery of the Hexham Heads

Dark Histories

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 70:19

In 1971, in the quiet town of Hexham, England, two small stone heads were unearthed — and with them, a series of strange and unsettling events began to unfold. Shadows moved where none should be, and visitors spoke of an unseen presence lingering in the air. Were the heads simple curiosities, ancient artifacts, or did they hold a deeper, forgotten power? Or were they simply modern toys, made by a doting father looking to entertain his young daughter? As questions grew and answers slipped further away, the mystery of the Hexham Heads only deepened, and then one day, they simply vanished, never to be seen or heard from again.SOURCES Screeton, Paul (2012) Quest for the Hexham Heads. popular Wiki of the Day

pWotD Episode 2603: Page 3 Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 589,276 views on Monday, 17 June 2024 our article of the day is Page 3.Page 3, or Page Three, was a British newspaper convention of publishing a large image of a topless female glamour model (known as a Page 3 girl) on the third page of mainstream red top tabloids. The Sun introduced the feature in November 1970, which boosted its readership and prompted competing tabloids—including The Daily Mirror, The Sunday People, and The Daily Star—to begin featuring topless models on their own third pages. Well-known Page 3 models included Linda Lusardi, Samantha Fox, Debee Ashby, Maria Whittaker, Katie Price, Keeley Hazell, and Jakki Degg.Although Page 3's defenders portrayed it as a harmless British cultural tradition, the feature was controversial throughout its history, drawing criticism both from conservatives, who tended to view it as softcore pornography inappropriate for inclusion in national newspapers, and feminists, who argued that Page 3 objectified women's bodies, negatively affected girls' and women's body image, and perpetuated sexism. Some politicians, most notably Clare Short and Caroline Lucas, campaigned to have Page 3 images banned from newspapers, although other politicians, including Nick Clegg and Ed Vaizey, expressed concern that such a ban would compromise press freedom. The British government never enacted legislation against Page 3, although activists in 2012 launched the No More Page 3 campaign with the goal of persuading newspaper editors and owners to end the feature voluntarily. In February 2013, Rupert Murdoch, owner of The Sun, suggested that Page 3 could become a "halfway house", featuring glamour photographs without showing nudity. In August of that year, The Sun's Republic of Ireland edition replaced topless Page 3 girls with clothed glamour models. The Sun's UK print editions followed suit in January 2015, discontinuing Page 3 after more than 44 years. The Sun's official Page 3 website ceased publishing new content in March 2017 and was taken offline the following year. In April 2019, The Daily Star became the last print daily to move to a clothed glamour format, ending the Page 3 convention in Britain's mainstream tabloid press. As of 2023, the only British tabloid still publishing topless models is the niche Sunday Sport. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:51 UTC on Tuesday, 18 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Page 3 on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ivy Neural.

Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

It was a huge privilege for this week's Nostalgia Interview to meet Nigel Nelson, the longest serving political editor in Fleet Street. Nigel works for the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People. We recorded our interview on the afternoon that the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer received fines from the Metropolitan Police for attending a party in Downing Street during lockdown. Nigel gives us his take on whether they should have resigned and how the removal of the Prime Minister affects the country's command structure. Nigel has worked with seven Prime Ministers, and he explains that he still has a frisson of excitement every time he walks into the House of Commons. He talks about how history can teach you lessons but that it can't tell you what will happen next. We discuss how the nature of news and politics has changed over the years and how it is now a 24/7 operation. Nigel talks about the things he sometimes can't publish and why he is irritated by political biographies, and how facts don't always tell the full story. From his teenage years Nigel has had an interest in politics and a talent for writing and he reveals how he has done things which he could only have dreamed about when he was young, including writing a political novel. I ask Nigel if he ever thought about being on the other side of the fence and he recounts the time he did toy with that idea at the time of the SDP in the 1980s. We learn why he would rather be on the sidelines than becoming one of the players. We find out about the events that Nigel has influenced through his work on The People, and we talk about why he admires Ken Clarke and Nigel Farage from the other side of the political spectrum and the importance for a political journalist of not becoming too friendly with politicians. Nigel shares his thoughts on how Prime Minister's Questions is really theatre and we learn that politicians often don't get along with politicians on their own side. We learn that Nigel's favourite film is Zulu and we discover why Muhammad Ali is such a pivotal figure and why Nigel has an interest in Gregorian chants. Nigel expresses his thoughts on organized religion, and we discuss whether politics and religion are similar. His mother was a spy and Nigel reveals his own experience of when the intelligence agencies tried to recruit him, too. Nigel explains that he would rather reveal than keep secrets. We also learn why he turned his back on university. Being a journalist, Nigel has a ringside view on history and he talks about his experience of being under fire at the time of war, how he and his wife have diametrically opposite political positions, and we learn why Nigel favours coalition as the best form of government. Then, at the end of the interview, Nigel reflects on his life and career and explains why he is a forward looking person. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Nigel Nelson and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

Nathaniel Nabena who is a nine year old who found himself in the right place at the right time when a very rare and very aggressive form of blood cancer attacked him. Just 100 children a year are diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) a year in the UK. Imagine the odds that one of them should be a young boy who just happened to be in the country visiting to get a prosthetic eye fitted for a different condition. Without modern medical treatment of chemotherapy, venetoclax and a stem cell transplant death would be certain. This would not have been available in Nigeria where he lived. In London Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of the top places in the world to deal with this. Whilst he is not eligible for treatment under the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), doctors at the world-famous hospital have waived their fees dramatically reducing the cost to save this life. One of the UK’s most popular national newspapers, The Mirror and its sister publication the Sunday People have been behind this case since February. Thanks to the generosity of their readers and others the initial chemotherapy has been paid for and was very successful. But without another £200,000 being raised in the next ten days the window will close on following this treatment up with a stem cell transplant. He has a match which is itself a miracle. This treatment may well be curative and allow him to live a normal life. The Sunday People, one of Britain's oldest Sunday newspapers, has finally developed an online presence. Under the stewardship of Trinity Mirror executive Sue Douglas, People.co.uk is being described as 'news without the boring bits'. Steve Hewlett asks Sue Douglas why she was so keen to take the helm of the digital offering, and discusses how she can turn a weekly newspaper into a 24 hour website.Meanwhile, the Independent newspaper has had yet another re-design. It's the fifth one in as many years. The red masthead brought in by then editor Chris Blackhurst in 2011 will now run vertically down the front page. It's the brain child of new editor Amol Rajan who says he wants to capture the essence of the paper's first editions from 1986. As he describes it, the style is, 'classic with a twist'. But can reverting back to a vintage style recapture a lost audience? The paper has a circulation of just 70,000. Steve talks to Chris Blackhurst, who is now the Group Content Editor of The Independent, i, The Independent on Sunday and Evening Standard, about whether a re-design is really the answers to the papers problems.Bidding is now underway for rights to cover Champions League football games. The question on analysts' lips is whether BT Sport will decide to go head to head against Sky Sports and try and win the right to cover these games. It comes as BT announces record broadband subscriber numbers, due in part to it offering it's sports channel free of charge. It's already paid £246m per season to broadcast 38 Premier League games, so will it seek to further challenge the dominance of Sky?Producer: Katy Takatsuki.
