Today's episode of the Clean Power Hour, Tim Montague welcomes back Chris Lettman, US Sales Director for Imperial Star Solar, to dive deep into the world of domestic content in solar panel manufacturing. As the US approaches 50 gigawatts of solar panel manufacturing capacity, Chris brings his 16+ years of industry experience to clarify the often misunderstood requirements for domestic content qualification.Chris explains the critical distinction between modules assembled in the US versus those that truly qualify for the 10% ITC domestic content adder, which requires US-manufactured solar cells. With only about 5 gigawatts of the current 50 gigawatts of panel manufacturing capacity using domestically produced cells, Chris cautions developers and EPCs to thoroughly vet manufacturers' claims about domestic content eligibility. The conversation explores Imperial Star Solar's 2-gigawatt manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas, their partnership with Suniva for solar cells, and their commitment to transparency regarding domestic content verification. Chris shares insights from his recent experience at the Solar and Wind Finance Conference in Phoenix, noting the growing brand recognition of Imperial Star in the US market.Tim and Chris also discuss the broader implications of reshoring solar manufacturing, including job creation, tax revenue, and supply chain security. They address how the current political climate affects the solar manufacturing renaissance spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act, emphasizing the importance of continued good industrial policy to support American manufacturing.Whether you're a solar developer navigating ITC requirements, an EPC looking to source domestically manufactured panels, or simply interested in the future of American clean energy manufacturing, this episode offers valuable insights you won't want to miss. Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.Ukrainian navy says a third of Russian warships in the Black Sea have been destroyed or disabledSummary: Following a successful drone strike on a Russian amphibious landing ship that was docked in Sevastopol, the Ukrainian Navy has announced that about a third of Russia's Black Sea fleet has been destroyed or disabled.Context: Though Ukrainian forces continue to struggle against Russian advances on land, due in part to the nature of the conflict, and in part to waning monetary and hardware support from its allies, its efforts in the Black Sea have been comparably consistently successful, and these strikes, utilizing an array of unmanned aerial and water-skimming drones, have forced the Russian fleet to pull back, making these warships a lot less effective in terms of supporting ground-based Russian forces, and opening more paths for ships carrying Ukrainian grain to foreign ports.—The Associated PressOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. The game was intense, with Mill Creek leading 31-24 in the final seconds, and Buford on a potential game-tying drive. However, ESPN abruptly switched its broadcast to the start of an NBA preseason game between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving viewers unable to witness the game's conclusion. Fans, both locally and nationwide, expressed their frustration on social media, with many criticizing ESPN for the decision. In response to the backlash, ESPN issued an apology and plans to re-air the game on ESPNU. STORY 3: Gwinnett County Public Schools Saw Graduation Rate Decline This Year Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) had a graduation rate of 81.9% in 2023, down from 83.2% in 2022, signaling a decline in on-time high school graduation. Five high schools reported their best graduation rates in the past five years, while 12 schools saw their rates increase. Nine schools achieved graduation rates exceeding 90%. Despite these positive results, the districtwide graduation rate remains below the statewide rate of 84.4%. GCPS officials attribute the decline to attendance issues, with rising chronic absenteeism leading to fewer students graduating on time. Superintendent Calvin Watts is actively working on initiatives to improve graduation rates, including communicating with students and families about expectations and providing necessary support. The Democratic National Committee recently decided to no longer accept campaign donations from fossil fuel companies. The move signals the party’s commitment to addressing climate change. But could blocking contributions from oil, gas and coal companies end up hurting Democrats in the midterm election? We discuss the new DNC policy with RL Miller, political director at Climate Hawks Vote, chair of the California Democratic Party’s environmental caucus, and a co-author of the resolution. Before that, we answer a listener’s question about the influence of billionaire conservative activists Charles and David Koch. Did Republicans start to resist climate action because of the Koch brothers' involvement? We also check in on the non-partisan, non-profit Citizens' Climate Lobby, which met with members of Congress last week to advocate for a price on carbon. One participant admits progress is slow, but insists the dialogue is valuable. To kick off the show, we briefly circle back on the Climate Solutions Caucus, bipartisan group of lawmakers seeking to advance climate change policies. Several Republican members recently voted against valuing carbon in environmental regulations. For almost a year, one of the hottest topics among solar insiders has been the Suniva trade case. Its petition for the President to impose import duties on certain solar photovoltaic cells and modules created market uncertainty, galvanized the vast majority of the solar industry in opposition to the petition, and left everyone wondering--as usual--what the President would decide. Today, the President issued his decision, bringing the long guessing game to an end. Now the question becomes, what did the President approve, and what will the impact be? Welcome to Episode 44 of SunCast, Solar Warrior! I'm so glad you are with me again this week! We're back with another edition of the Solar Pioneers Series, and today's guest hails from the East Coast of the US. I know what you are thinking - "Wait a minute, Nico, aren't all the solar pioneers from California?" Not all of them! Back in the 70s and 80s, there were a number of companies in and around the DC area that were quite innovative. Among them, Solarex. Today's guest was one of the early employees at Solerex. When I met Tony back in 2010, he was the CEO of Standard Solar, a company he continues to lead today. I have had the pleasure of watching Standard Solar become one of the fastest growing and important solar companies, not just in the North East region, but now with an established presence across the US. In today's episode, Tony and I discuss: What it was like to work for Solarex in the 70s. What Tony believes are the fundamentals or bellwether signs of a maturing industry (and where solar is along that curve). What key employee characteristics he looks for when hiring into such a fast-growing company. Tony's thoughts on the next 5 years ahead for the solar industry. A fun Hot or Not segment, including Tony's thoughts on topics from Distributed Storage to the Section 201 Trade Case with Suniva. ...and of course, some key lessons and advice gleaned from his 30+ years, not just in solar, but in scaling startups! You can read more on the blog and see the show notes for this episode. White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon (unwittingly) gave an interview this week, saying America is locked in "an economic war with China." Bannon mentioned arcane sections of the 1974 Trade Act to penalize China for alleged steel and aluminum dumping. Could solar be on the list, too? Bannon's comments suggest he's also paying attention to Section 201 of the trade act -- which is the foundation of Suniva and SolarWorld’s case for slapping severe penalties on imported solar cells and modules from Asia and the rest of the world. Those companies, plus dozens of other heavy hitters in solar, were in Washington this week to argue their case in front of the International Trade Commission. In this week's show, we’ll have the latest on solar trade politics. Then, we'll dig into a fascinating new study on second-order climate beliefs. It’s not just about what you believe -- it’s about what you believe others believe. Finally, we’ll revisit the rise of non-wires alternatives. More utilities are opting for distributed resources in place of traditional wires upgrades on the grid. We’ll discuss a new project in Arizona and then look across the landscape of other projects. Several months ago, the U.S. solar industry learned of a worrisome new trade case that accuses foreign module manufacturers of dumping solar cells and panels on the market and requests dramatic new tariffs on all imported PV cells and modules. If successful this trade case would result in a doubling or possibly even a tripling of the cost of PV panels.
In this episode, Jeff and Sue discuss their thoughts on the Suniva trade case and compare PV panels vs PV shingles. Topics include: • PV panels vs PV shingles • Inverter Considerations • Connector problems • Tesla speculation
n most parts of the country, solar energy has been having a great decade. Estimates puts the industry’s growth at 16-hundred percent over the last 8 years. A great decade, maybe, but solar’s been having a really bad year -- especially residential rooftop solar. There’s been a big-time slowdown in that market, and bankruptcies abound from the likes of SunEdison, Sungevity, Suniva, and at least one company not starting with Sun -- SolarWorld. Inside Energy’s Dan Boyce looks into what’s going on.
In this episode we finally dive into solar energy with Pam Cargill, Principal at Chaolysti consulting and a board member of SEIA, the Solar Energy Industries Association. Our conversation begins with a look at the type of solar consulting work Chaolysti does, and continues with SEIA's recent Lobby Day on Capitol Hill; a discussion about the Suniva trade petition, its potential impact on the domestic solar industry, and how it will proceed; how the politics of solar have changed over the years; how utilities are addressing the growth in distributed generation and rooftop solar; some of the legislative approaches California is taking; and closes with Pam's prediction about the future of solar over the next ten years. Resources mentioned in this episode include: Pam's interview on Barry Cinnamon's podcast The Energy Show SEIA's article about expected solar industry job loss if the Suniva trade petition is upheld North Carolina Clean Energy Technology Center's "50 States of Solar" 1st Quarter 2017 Report Grid Geeks podcast Episode 3: Western Markets and Regionalization: Why Should We Care? Here we go again. America's solar industry is in the midst of yet another trade dispute. In late May, the U.S. government officially accepted Suniva's request to review the impact of imported cells and modules on domestic solar manufacturers. If trade officials request tariffs and minimum prices at the levels suggested by Suniva, it could set industry equipment pricing back to 2012 levels and installed system pricing at 2015 levels. A lot of planned utility-scale solar projects would be destroyed. And a number of states would be out of reach for residential installers. If the International Trade Commission agrees with Suniva's complaint, it will send recommendations to the president. And no one knows what Trump will do. In an industry already facing a slowdown in growth, high duties on imported solar equipment could be a disaster. But is it a doomsday scenario? In this week's podcast, we look at the potential consequences for solar businesses upstream and downstream. Thanks to our launch sponsor, AES Energy Storage. To many, France’s ongoing elections are the latest showdown between the liberal world order and a new brand of right-wing populism. That narrative follows a similar path in energy. France’s elections are pitting nuclear versus renewables, closed markets versus open, and disruption versus protectionism. France is going through a quite radical revaluation of its electricity mix. It gets about 75 percent of its electricity from nuclear. However, in 2015, President François Holland set a policy that would phase out aging nuclear plants, and reduce nuclear generation to 50 percent by 2025. He wants to fill in the gap with more renewables and efficiency. Now the two presidential candidates -- Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen -- are sparring over what to do with nuclear. It’s part of a broader debate over nationalizing the energy giant EDF, expanding or limiting energy trading with the E.U., and mixing variable renewables with a really high nuclear grid. On this week's podcast: As we near the May 7 run-off election between Macron and Le Pen, we consider the future of the world’s leading nuclear energy power during a time of political volatility and electricity market transformation. Then, are we at the start of a new solar trade war between America and the rest of the world? We'll discuss Suniva's wide-ranging trade complaint to the government. Finally, the U.K. recently went coal-free for a day. We place its significance.
