This is a fascinating area that might sound like futuristic science fiction - but there is now increasing studies and evidence that there are definitive links between gut health, and brain health – and links that work both ways. The gut is home to trillions of good and bad bacteria and can produce chemicals with a direct impact on your brain while similarly the brain can talk to the gut because there is a communication and signalling system between the two.  This concept that you might have a ‘brain in your gut’ is revolutionising medicines’ understanding of the links between digestion, mood, health and even the way people think.  ‘Mind health’, 'gut health', and 'heart health', and how these influence and talk to each other are being discussed at a free Health & Wellness online Webinar by 3 Sydney Adventist Hospital medical specialists on Thursday night 3rd December. Second only to lung cancer in causing cancer deaths in women, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in Australia, with an estimated 19,974 new cases likely to be diagnosed by the end of 2020.  A major concern is that during the pandemic people have deferred screening which could delay diagnosis – which is particularly sad given that finding breast cancer early means there are more treatment options and chances of survival are greatest. Breast cancer awareness is important for women of all ages, and their partners play an important role in helping highlight awareness that could be life-saving and equally while breast cancer in men is uncommon at less than 1% of all breast cancers, men should also be vigilant. Traditionally, conservative treatments such as medication including opioids, physical therapy, psychological treatment, and in some cases surgery might have once been the only options or the patients were told to go and live with the pain . This was before revolutionary advances, based on the fact that the body is a complex bio-electrical-mechanical system. Pain signals transmitted via electrical impulses into the spinal cord and then into higher brain centres for us to perceive pain, in combating the body’s own electrical impulses the idea of using electricity to fight the pain has been experimented for decades if not centuries.  Egyptians used electromagnetic fish to treat a variety of pain conditions. In more recent times the use of electrical impulses via spinal cord stimulation, (where nerves intersect), to block pain signals to the brain has been tested and proven to be an effective way of combating chronic pain. Majority of these devices were able to deliver lower frequencies where pain was replaced by tingling, of course this was not effective for many , nor tolerable for some. In the last week there has been another significant advance with an Australian first implantation of a device at Sydney Adventist Hospital, a device that for the first time enables the delivery of a range of electrical impulses from as low as  2 hertz ( in strength) to 10,000 hertz - and all the levels in between. This new device can be used to treat a wider range of pain – pain caused by back or nerve problems, sciatica, diabetic neuropathy, abdominal pain, pelvic pain or cancer and published reports from its overseas usage suggest it can reduce pain by up to 80%, and in up to 80% of the people who use it. Specialist interventional pain physician Dr Vahid Mohabbati, who did the implantation of the device at the San on a woman in her early 40’s who was debilitated by chronic back and leg pain despite multiple back surgery, joins Luke Grant to discuss the revolutionary therapy.

A good example is the March installation of new radiation equipment at the Icon Cancer Centre onsite at the Sydney Adventist Hospital Integrated Cancer Centre, consistently voted by patients as amongst the best outpatient cancer services in NSW since 2016.  ‘Icon Wahroonga was third in the world and first in the Southern Hemisphere to deliver Artificial Intelligence driven radiation therapy treatment using Varian's Ethos therapy solution. Dr Amy Teh from The Sydney Adventist Hospital joins John Stanley to discuss the breakthrough treatment options.

Does each bedside decision you make actually help your patient to feel, function or survive? Have you considered how frightening and intimidating the Intensive Care Unit environment is to your patients and their families? Do you feel empowered by the people you work with and the culture in your ICU?   Simon Finfer loves telling a tale. In this episode you’ll hear the story of the serendipitous and multi-national route Simon took to end up working for 25 years in one of Australia’s premiere Intensive Care Units. An Intensive Care Department where his colleagues and the culture they developed has fostered him to become one of Australia’s prominent intensive care researchers. You’ll also hear how he teaches his junior colleagues to question everything they do at the bedside to ensure their decisions truly help the patient. Simon is a Professorial Fellow in the Critical Care and Trauma Division at The George Institute for Global Health, a Senior Intensivist at Royal North Shore Hospital and Director of Intensive Care at the Sydney Adventist Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales, a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney and is a past-Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) Clinical Trials Group. Simon is a world leader in Sepsis and is an international expert in the design and conduct of large scale randomised controlled trials in Intensive Care. Simon has collaborated with me (and many others) through the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group, so we caught up at the Group’s recent 20th Annual Meeting on Clinical Trials in Intensive Care at Noosa Heads in Queensland. We had a fascinating conversation in which Simon talked about: His early career in London where he was simply working too hard The circuitous route he took to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney The magnificent people-oriented culture inspired by Malcolm Fisher His early collaboration with the George Institute for Global Health How showing you care is what matters most in an end of life discussion His thoughts on having family at the bedside for ward rounds How the golf course is the only place he doesn’t think about patients How moving to a property with animals has brought relaxation and peace The rekindling of his passion for motorbike riding Why he got a Twitter account and how social media is both a force for good and an echo chamber How it’s almost “too easy” to write a paper in modern times The unlikelihood of a magic bullet arriving anytime soon His advice to look after our selves, to embrace uncertainty and to maintain our humanity My genuine hope with this podcast is to inspire and empower you to bring your best self to work and to consider adopting some of the habits and behaviours my guests give their perspectives on, with the ultimate purpose of improving outcomes for all of our patients. The Next Big Anti-Aging Drug: Everything You Need To Know About "NAD".

Ben Greenfield Life

Scientific American recently published the article "", an article that proposes that...   ..."recent research suggests it may be possible to reverse mitochondrial decay with dietary supplements that increase cellular levels of a molecule called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)"...   ...and also that...   ..."the mitochondria in muscles of elderly mice were restored to a youthful state after just a week of injections with NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a molecule that naturally occurs in cells and, like NR, boosts levels of NAD"...   Since that article was published I've received an onslaught of questions about this mysterious molecule called NAD. It just so happens that a friend of mine, Thomas Ingoglia, known as one of the best NAD scientists on the planet and is also in contact with the best NAD clinicians on the planet - both with decades of experience second to none. I consider Thomas himself to be one of the most knowledgeable and frequent users of NAD I've ever met, and one of the few that has been playing around with NAD in combination with cryotherapy, blueberry extract, hyperbaric oxygen and other "biohacks" to completely turn him around from being bed-ridden sick and losing half his family in a car crash to being in the best health of his life, including crushing his first Spartan race with me last year (prior to which took high doses of NAD).   Problem is, most NAD clinical researchers are all underground at the moment. The FDA doesn't look kindly at NAD supplement companies and integrative doctors, they are quite skeptical of naturopathy, and their first impulse is to turn these things and others into patentable drugs because that’s the language the FDA speaks. Plus, NAD can be dangerous. Thomas even knows a guy personally (ironically, a Phd in toxicology that poisoned himself due to his own error) who hospitalized himself experimenting with the substances we’re going to be talking about in this podcast episode. So you need to proceed with caution and with the formal clinical information Thomas has opened my eyes to. Along with Thomas, today's podcast features Dr. Ross Grant, Phd. Dr. Grant is perhaps the most prolific authors in the field of NAD, and he specializes on NAD in the brain. He started researching NAD research back in 1994 while being laughed at, when no one was doing NAD research.   Dr. Ross Grant is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Medical School and CEO of the Australasian Research Institute, Sydney Adventist Hospital. A biochemical pharmacologist with a Ph.D. in Neurochemistry/Neuropharmacology, Dr. Grant’s research is focused on NAD - specifically the role of oxidative stress - e.g. emotional stress, diet, and exercise - and NAD metabolism on brain cell death and cellular degeneration. A secondary interest is in the effect of exposure to novel nutritional components, such as polyphenols, on human cellular response to oxidative stress, with a goal of detecting and correcting early degenerative biochemical changes associated with aging-related degenerative disease. Dr. Grant is a member of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), Australian Neuroscience society (ANS), Australian Society of Clinical & Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology, Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA).   With forty-eight articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, Dr. Grant is perhaps the most prolific author in the field of NAD research. In addition to Dr. Grant, we are joined by Dr. Philip Milgram, MD, from the . Dr. Milgram recovered from his own challenges with addiction and now helps other people in recovery from addiction, specifically by using NAD protocols. He trained in 1991 with Vernon Johnson, the man who coined the term “Intervention”. He was certified as a Prevention Specialist by the Certifying Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CCBADC) in 2001, and has three degrees in counseling from UCSD; in Counseling and Interpersonal Communication, Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Advanced Intervention. In addition to NAD Treatment Center, Dr. Milgram served as the original Medical Director of Confidential Recovery and the Pemarro Detox Center. He has also served as the Medical Consultant for The Soledad House Recovery Home for Women and ABC Recovery since they opened. He is a member of the attending staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Milgram is a member of The American Society of Addiction Medicine, the California Association of Addiction Medicine, International Doctors in AA, Like-Minded Docs Addiction Medicine, The American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Society of Anti-Aging Medicine, and the American Nutraceutical Association.   During our discussion, you'll discover: -An easy explanation of what exactly NAD is and what it does inside your body... -The protocol Thomas used to go from being addicted to opiates and chronically fatigued to completely healed... -How NAD can break addictions to alcohol, food, opiates and more... -The relationship between anti-aging and NAD... -The important difference between Nicotinamide Riboside vs. Nicotinamide (NMN) vs. NAD+... -The best way to "flood your body" with NAD, and why grapes and blueberries are so important when it comes to your NAD levels... -What kind of compounds, foods and lifestyle strategies enhance the effect of NAD... -How NAD can increase your time to exhaustion during exercise by over 15%... -How Thomas used NAD to enhance his performance in a Spartan race... -The best way to test your own NAD levels... -How NAD can be used in the treatment of Lyme Disease... -The best resource for people to delve more into NAD research... -And much more!   Resources from this episode: -   -   - (be careful with dosage on this, as we discuss in podcast!)   - (dosage also discussed in podcast)   -   -   Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Dr. Grant, Dr. Mingram, Thomas Ingoglia or me? Leave your thoughts at  and one of us will reply!
