The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
Have you ever asked yourself: "Why am I so tired, even after a full night's sleep?" "Am I really present for my kids, or just physically there?" "Could my low energy be impacting my marriage and family life?" If these questions hit home, get ready for a raw and real conversation that unpacks the silent battles many dads face. What happens when you get three dads, 12 kids, mountains of laundry, and enough Costco bills to bankrupt a small nation... all together on one podcast? Chaos? Yep. Laughter? Absolutely. But beneath the wild potty-training stories and "Dad, look at my squat!" moments, today's conversation hits something way deeper with Matt Salazar, father of five boys, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Gent Health, and his partner, Sonny Howard, a dad of three. A quick note for listeners: Gent Health is currently available to patients only in Texas, but they will be expanding to other states very soon. Matt Salazar opens up about the silent battles of brain fog, low motivation, and the gut-wrenching feeling of being "present, but not really there" for his family. Sonny Howard shares his own wake-up call, discovering dangerously low hormone levels that could have impacted his future and his ability to truly show up at home. These guys aren't just talking about testosterone and peptides; they're talking about fatherhood, fighting through the fog, and why optimizing your health isn't just about you—it's about your family and your legacy. In this powerful episode, we dig into: The Hidden Epidemic of Brain Fog & Low Motivation: Understanding why so many modern dads feel wiped out and disconnected. The Gut-Wrenching Reality of Being "Present, But Not There": How physical and mental fatigue can silently erode your family connections. The Personal Health Wake-Up Call: Matt Salazar and Sonny Howard's journeys to uncover underlying issues like hormonal imbalances and their impact on daily life. Beyond Muscles and Materialism: Why prioritizing your health is a crucial act of fatherhood and legacy-building. Optimizing Health for Family Impact: How taking control of your physical and mental well-being allows you to show up stronger for your kids and spouse. Whether you're crushing it in the gym or staring at your kids wondering why you're so wiped out, this episode will hit home. Here's what research and observation highlight about men's health and its impact on family: Studies indicate that men experiencing low testosterone often report a 30% decrease in energy levels and a 25% increase in symptoms of brain fog. Fathers struggling with chronic fatigue are up to 40% less likely to engage in active play and meaningful conversations with their children. Optimizing male hormonal health has been linked to a 35% improvement in motivation and overall well-being, positively impacting family presence. www.thedadedge.com/529 www.thedadedge.com/alliance www.gent.health www.instagram.com/genthealth

Are You Joyful… or Just Functioning? Most people don't realize it—but there's a silent struggle happening behind the smiles and the schedules. Today, I sit down with Dr. Judith Joseph, a Columbia-trained psychiatrist and author of High Functioning: Overcome Your Hidden Depression and Reclaim Your Joy. We tackle something that I think is affecting more people than anyone talks about… high functioning depression. It's not in the "DSM"—but it's very real. And if you've ever felt like you're doing everything “right” but still feel empty inside, you need to hear this. We talked about a condition called anhedonia—this sneaky, silent twin of depression that robs you of joy without making you collapse. It's the part of depression that doesn't get seen or treated because you're still performing, still producing, still achieving. Dr. Judith broke down how traumas, even the little ones, can rewire the way we experience joy. And more importantly, she gave a way out. You don't have to crash to get help. You don't have to be broken to deserve healing. This episode isn't just about naming the problem. It's about owning your emotional truth, slowing down, and reclaiming the simple human experiences that actually fill you. Whether you're a high achiever constantly “doing” or someone who feels like joy is always out of reach, this one's for you. Judith's “5 V's” framework gives you real tools you can use every day—like planning your joy, validating your feelings, and choosing presence over performance. And let me tell you what stood out most. Joy is contagious! It spreads. To your kids, your spouse, your team. The more we access joy, the more we model it for those around us. This conversation hit home for me—and I think it will for you too. Key Takeaways: Why anhedonia is the overlooked symptom stealing your joy. The difference between happiness (an idea) and joy (an experience). The “5 V's” system to help reclaim joy: Validation, Venting, Values, Vitals, Vision. How trauma—big or small—can lead to high functioning depression. Tools to help yourself or someone you love who's silently struggling. The impact of hormonal changes on mental health, especially for women. A method to ground yourself daily and reduce anxiety: the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. Let's not wait for the crash to start healing. You deserve joy. You just forgot how to feel it. Max out.
Patrick Boyter, a retired Army soldier who served in Iraq and experienced firsthand the devastating cost of war—both on the battlefield and after coming home.Pat opens up about a horrific day where 200 women and children lost their lives. But the battle didn't end there. After leaving the military, he struggled with losing his identity, purpose, and the harsh reality that many soldiers in his unit took their own lives—because they were taught to "suffer in silence."This conversation sheds light on the mental health crisis among veterans, the hidden struggles they face, and the search for purpose after service. In this episode, we're honored to chat with Dr. Bradley Nelson, the creator of The Emotion Code—a powerful healing system that has helped thousands release trapped emotions and reclaim health, vitality, and joy. This conversation is both inspiring and affirming, reminding us that we are energy and Spirit. That God—and our subconscious—are always working to support our healing and transformation. Dr. Brad's journey is remarkable. Through his studies in ancient medicine, psychology, and quantum physics, combined with his deep spiritual practice, he discovered that unprocessed emotions are at the root of many physical and emotional issues. “The body is energy, and emotions are energy too. When negative emotions become trapped, they block the body's self-healing system. These trapped emotions can be like tumors—at best, they hinder healing; at worst, they create disease.” Dr. Brad developed a simple yet powerful method to identify and release these trapped emotions, tapping into the subconscious mind's innate wisdom. Using energy principles, electro-magnetic fields, and the Governing Meridian, this process is so accessible that even a child can do it. A key part of The Emotion Code is clearing the Heart-Wall™—emotional energies that build up around the heart, blocking love and success. This discovery has been called “the most important breakthrough in energy medicine.” With profound success, Dr. Brad's work has reached thousands worldwide. Feeling called to empower others, he began teaching seminars in 1998. Today, he is the CEO of Discover Healing, a global holistic education platform certifying practitioners in The Emotion Code and The Body Code. Dr. Brad and his wife, Jean, have been married for over 40 years, have eight children and six grandchildren, and live in St. George, Utah. Connect with Dr Bradley Nelson: https://discoverhealing.com

Here's a strange story: One day two summers ago, Jennifer Khan woke up because her arms, — both of them — hurt. Not the way they do when you've slept in a funny position, but as if the tendons in her forearms and hands were moving through mud. What felt like sharp electric shocks kept sparking in her fingers and sometimes up the inside of her biceps and across her chest. Holding anything was excruciating: a cup, a toothbrush, her phone. Even doing nothing was miserable. It hurt when she sat with her hands in her lap, when she stood, when she lay flat on the bed or on her side. The slightest pressure — a bedsheet, a watch band, a bra strap — was intolerable. Our understanding of pain, and especially chronic pain, is far behind where it should be. We don't know what causes a person with an injury to develop chronic pain, or why it happens in some people and not others, or why it happens more often in women. At a genetic and cellular level, we don't know which systems get out of whack, or why, or how to fix them. [Content Warning]: Child sexual abuse, incestToday, Jan is joined by Aleesha Barlow, a sur-thrivivor of child abuse and the origin story of the Tell Somebody movement. As a child, she was molested by her maternal grandfather. At age 6, she told her aunt. Aleesha was then instructed by her 2 aunts and mother, to keep it a secret from the police and her own father with the promise the abuse would stop. Aleesha was still brought around her grandfather, and unfortunately the abuse continued until she was a teenager. It took Aleesha 20 years to tell her dad, but the moment she did, she felt an immediate weight lifted off her shoulders that she wants all survivors to feel, so she started the Tell Somebody movement. She shares many different survivors' stories on her platform, and she travels the world teaching kids to speak up and tell somebody if they are being touched inappropriately, with her Amazon's Best Seller “Tell Somebody: The Basics” children's book.Aleesha discusses the emotional impact of abuse on relationships and self-esteem, emphasizing the importance of breaking the abuse cycle. She faces challenges in getting schools to address child abuse and reaches out to families through her 'Reach the Unreachable' series. The conversation highlights the need for more support and funding for abuse survivors, and the importance of education and early intervention. Aleesha shares her experiences with public figures and emphasizes caution in trusting others. She and Jan stress the importance of educating children about body safety and encourage survivors to share their stories to break the cycle of abuse.Get Your Copy Of 'Tell Somebody'Follow Aleesha:TellSomebodyToday.comInsta: @_QueenLeesh / @TellSomebodyMovement TikTok Facebook If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or suicidal ideation, please access the resources below:National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call/Text 988National Sexual Assault Hotline (RAINN) : 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)National Alliance for Mental Illness: 1-800-950-6264Subscribe / Support / Contact:

About the Guest: Kellee Kortas is an integrative health practitioner dedicated to helping individuals uncover the root causes of illness. With her background in nutritional therapy, quantum biology, and functional blood chemistry, she offers a comprehensive approach to holistic health. After dealing with her own health issues, including undiagnosed mold exposure, and losing her father to medical mismanagement, Kellee turned to alternative therapies. She now advocates for a balanced, patient-centered approach to healing that integrates both conventional and holistic practices. Key Takeaways: Personal Health Journey: Kellee's experiences with undiagnosed health issues and mismanagement by conventional medicine led her to explore alternative health practices like Yoga, nutritional therapy, and functional medicine. The importance of advocating for your own health and seeking out practitioners who treat the individual, not just the symptoms. Challenges with the Healthcare System: Kellee discusses how the current healthcare system often prioritizes symptom management over long-term wellness and prevention, and how nutritional guidance in hospitals can be inadequate. Insights into the pitfalls of allopathic medicine and the need for more holistic and individualized care approaches. Dangers of Mold Exposure: Mold is a "hidden epidemic" that can go undiagnosed for years, leading to chronic health issues. The effects of mold exposure range from respiratory problems to autoimmune issues and even mental health challenges. Finding the Right Holistic Practitioner: When searching for a holistic health practitioner, consider their background, treatment philosophy, and how they approach individual care. Avoid practitioners who apply one-size-fits-all solutions, and instead look for those who tailor their approach to your specific needs. Foundational Health Practices: Simple practices like proper nutrition, stress management, and environmental awareness can lead to long-lasting health improvements. It's crucial to be proactive in maintaining wellness by addressing root causes of illness rather than only treating symptoms.

We welcome Dr. Thomas E. Levy back for the podcast to discuss the fascinating connection between vitamin C deficiency and disease. Dr. Levy is a board-certified cardiologist and a bar-certified attorney. After practicing adult cardiology for 15 years, he began to research the enormous toxicity associated with much dental work, as well as the pronounced ability of properly administered vitamin C to neutralize this toxicity. He has now written 13 books, including Hidden Epidemic and most recently Rapid Virus Recovery, with several addressing the wide-ranging properties of vitamin C in neutralizing all toxins and resolving most infections, as well as its vital role in the effective treatment of heart disease and cancer. Recently inducted into the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame, Dr. Levy continues to research the impact of the orthomolecular application of vitamin C and antioxidants in general on chronic degenerative diseases. Ralph welcomes Jeff Cohen from the activist group “Roots Action,” whose “Step Aside Joe” campaign was years ahead of the curve urging Joe Biden – for many reasons – to keep his promise to be a one-term president. Plus, Harvey Rosenfield, founder of Consumer Watchdog, updates us on how the insurance industry in cahoots with governor Gavin Newsom wants to roll back the immensely successful Prop 103 that over the years has saved Californians billions of dollars in insurance premiums and why this struggle has implications for auto and homeowner insurance premiums across the country.Jeff Cohen is Co-Founder and Policy Director at RootsAction. He is a media critic, columnist, documentary filmmaker, and retired journalism professor who founded the media watch group FAIR—Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting— in 1986. For years, he was a regular pundit on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC discussing issues of media and politics, and he is the author of Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media. Now, the challenge is reminiscent of Hubert Humphrey and Lyndon Baines Johnson. And when Hubert Humphrey ran for President in 1968—he was LBJ's Vice President—he had to face the question, is he gonna stay loyal to Johnson's position on the Vietnam War…or is he going to be faithful to his own personal judgment, which was to find a way to get out of the Vietnam War. He chose the former, to be loyal—he didn't distance himself—and he lost the election.Ralph NaderYou have all of these constituencies that want a change in policy…The base of the party is for peace and social justice. Not for continual expansion of the military budget. People forget that the Democratic platform in 2020 called for a reduction in military spending, and Joe Biden has increased military spending every year.Jeff CohenWe've organized around that point that if we cut the military budget—which has grown year after year under Joe Biden—and we took that money and spent it on healthcare and housing and education, imagine what a society we would have. If we uplifted working-class people. And when I look at what Joe Biden ran in in 2020—and the promises that were made that have been broken—if he had kept even half of these promises the Democrats would be winning in a landslide.Jeff CohenHarvey Rosenfield is one of the nation's foremost consumer advocates and founder of the advocacy group, Consumer Watchdog. Among many other accomplishments, Mr. Rosenfield authored Proposition 103 that has saved consumers hundreds of millions of dollars in auto insurance premiums. He has also co-authored groundbreaking initiatives on HMO reform and utility rate deregulation and is the author of the book, Silent Violence, Silent Death: the Hidden Epidemic of Medical Malpractice. The insurance industry never stopped fighting [Prop 103]. Even though they lost at the ballot box, they constantly tried to relitigate that election. They couldn't believe that the voters would have the temerity to tell the insurance companies how to conduct business in the state of California.Harvey RosenfieldThis kind of economic blackmail—boycotting state after state in order to up their profits—has worked in the past for insurance companies and this is what they're doing now. And it's easy to predict that as their bottom line improves, as the stock market improves…they'll start coming back into these states with the promise of far higher rates, and things will calm down. But in the meantime, people will have been soaked for tens of billions, hundreds of billions of dollars nationwide.Harvey RosenfieldIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. This week, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu will address the United States Congress for an unprecedented fourth time. According to the Wall Street Journal, presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris will skip Netanyahu's address, but will meet with the Prime Minister – who is wanted on war crimes charges by the International Criminal Court – and is expected to tell him that “it is time for the war to end” and to stop the “suffering of Palestinian civilians.” Harris is expected to take a new foreign policy approach, likely doing away with key Biden administration figures like Jake Sullivan, Anthony Blinken and Lloyd Austin. Jim Zogby, founder of the Arab American Institute, has stated that Harris has shown “far greater empathy for Palestinians than Biden.”2. With Harris taking center stage, the Intercept's Prem Thakker reports that Representative Rashida Tlaib has released a statement saying “I welcome the opportunity to engage Vice President Harris as my team and I work hard to inspire our Democratic base...They want to see a permanent ceasefire and an end to the funding of genocide in Gaza…They want us to fight against corporate greed that wants to eliminate unions and keep our families in the cycle of poverty. I am eager to speak to Vice President Harris about all of these issues and more.” Unlike other prominent progressive lawmakers – such as Bernie Sanders and AOC – Tlaib did not back Biden against the campaign to have him step aside as the Democratic nominee, and crucially, appears to be using whatever leverage she has to demand Harris push vigorously for a ceasefire in Gaza.3. The New York Times reports several major unions – including the The American Postal Workers Union, the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, the Service Employees International Union, United Auto Workers, United Electrical Workers, and the National Education Association, the largest union in the U.S. – have sent a letter to the Biden Administration demanding they “halt all military aid to Israel.” This letter emphasizes that “it is clear that the Israeli government will continue …until it is forced to stop,” and that “Stopping US military aid to Israel is the quickest and most sure way to do so.” APWU President Mark Dimondstein said in a statement “Our unions are hearing the cries of humanity as this vicious war continues…Working people and our unions are horrified that our tax dollars are financing this ongoing tragedy.”4. Reuters reports that in talks hosted in China this week, “Palestinian rivals including Hamas and Fatah agreed to form a unity government.” Al Maydeen reports “The meetings saw the participation of 14 Palestinian factions, including Fatah, Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine.” The so-called Beijing Declaration promises to “end the Palestinian national division [and] unify national efforts to confront…[Israeli] aggression and stop the genocide.” Implementation of this agreement will be monitored by Egypt, Algeria, China, and Russia.5. In the United Kingdom, “Five climate activists who planned a protest to cause gridlock and block traffic over four days on a major highway circling London were sentenced…to as much as five years in prison,” per ABC. Just Stop Oil, the group planning the protest, “called the prison terms ‘an obscene perversion of justice... for nothing more than attending a Zoom call.'” Protesting this decision, many prominent climate activists – ranging from Independent MP Jeremy Corbyn to Rowan Williams, Former Archbishop of Canterbury to musician Brian Eno – have signed a letter calling this “one of the greatest injustices in a British court in modern history…making a mockery of the right to a fair trial.” This letter also notes that these sentences are “higher than those given to many who commit serious sexual assault.” This letter also cites the United Nations special rapporteur on environmental defenders, who called this “a dark day for peaceful environmental protest, the protection of environmental defenders and indeed anyone concerned with the exercise of their fundamental freedoms in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.”6. In more climate related news, in New York City landlords are required to provide heat for tenants in the winter. Yet, there is no equivalent rule for landlords to provide air conditioning for tenants during the increasingly blistering summers. Now, Gothamist reports New York City Councilmember Lincoln Restler of Brooklyn plans to introduce a bill “requiring [landlords] to ensure tenants can cool their homes to at least 78 degrees when it is 82 degrees or warmer during the summer.” Restler is quoted saying “Heat is the number one climate or weather-related killer – not just nationally, but right here in New York City…We've already suffered three awful heat waves this summer. Can you imagine what it's like to try to manage it without air conditioning or any cooling device in your apartment?” This move comes amid other attempts to legislate heat protections as temperatures continue to rise.7. In an infuriating example of corporate greed, the Guardian reports that pharmaceutical giant Gilead is charging outrageous prices for a new drug described as “the closest we have ever been to an HIV vaccine.” According to this report, “Lenacapavir, sold as Sunlenca…currently costs $42,250 for the first year…[yet] In a study…experts calculated that the minimum price for mass production of a generic version…allowing for 30% profit, was $40 a year.” This report continues “Given by injection every six months, lenacapavir can prevent infection and suppress HIV in people who are already infected…In a trial, the drug offered 100% protection to more than 5,000 women in South Africa and Uganda.”8. In a welcome check against corporate greed, the Federal Communications Commission has “voted to end exorbitant phone and video call rates that have burdened incarcerated people and their families fordecades.” The new rules will cap the cost of a 15-minute phone call at 90 cents for large jails and $1.35 for small ones. As of now, a 15-minute phone call can cost as much as $11.35 in a large jail and over $12 in a small one. The new rules also bar added fees.9. In more positive regulatory news, the Federal Trade Commission has “issued orders to eight companies offering surveillance pricing products and services that incorporate data about consumers' characteristics and behavior. The orders seek information about the potential impact these practices have on privacy, competition, and consumer protection.” The companies in question include Mastercard, JPMorgan Chase, and perennial corporate malefactor, McKinsey. Indicating the universality of this move, no more than 3 members of the FTC can be of the same party yet the Commission voted 5-0 to issue these orders.10. Finally, in some local news, NBC4 Washington reports that “Former President Donald Trump has threatened a federal takeover of Washington, D.C., if he wins a second term in November.” Leaving aside the ever-present bluster and bombast that accompany such Trump pronouncements, NBC4 makes the crucial point that because D.C. lacks statehood “The president can take over the police department and many of the powers the mayor and D.C. Council have.” In light of this credible threat, it is more critical than ever that Congress act on D.C. Statehood and end the unjust status quo of taxation without representation. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. “Think of radio frequency radiation as just a sort of invisible light,” says today's guest Nick Pineault, author of the best-selling book “The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs.” Just as the toxic light emitted from our laptops and cellphones are disrupting our biology at the mitochondrial level, the WiFi connecting us to those same devices sends out electromagnetic field (EMF) frequencies that send similarly confusing messages to our cells, many of which travel even deeper than light. On today's episode of The Quantum Biology Collective podcast, Nick explains the damaging effects of this radiation from inhibiting the body's ability to produce energy to ultimately diseases like cancer. For those with heightened electro-sensitivity, it only takes a fraction of the exposure most of us experience on a daily basis. Luckily, there are many steps we can take to mitigate and reduce our exposure. Join the discussion to learn how you can shield your home, workspace, and body from harm. Quotes: “You have voltage going around you in the form of WiFi and it's completely random, it's at frequencies that have never been seen before and then the intensities vary in time, and the pulsation is all over the place. So, these signals are completely foreign to the body.” (10:23 | Nick Pineault) “Our electrical environment now is ever-changing by the second, so we never fully adapt. And I think that's part of the problem of why it's so pernicious and why we're seeing effects that are short and long term. It becomes almost like a weight that people carry on their shoulders. If you live in a city, or you're always exposed to your devices, maybe it's fine for a certain period of time but now it's been decades that we've been exposed to this wireless.” (14:48 | Nick Pineault) “So you had a technology executive get appointed to head the body that's meant to keep us safe from technology companies. Yes, all of the top directors are industry people, ex-executives at Verizon and these top wireless companies, or who represent the [Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association] CTIA, which is the front group, the lobbying group for the industry. So the conflict of interest—it's not even a conflict of interest, it's complete capture by the agency.” (29:37 | Meredith Oke and Nick Pineault) “All we can do is try to minimize exposure as much as we can. That would be the message. And if it means you start with one action step, that's good enough, but over time you get better.” (48:33| Nick Pineault) “Think about the fact that certain of your body parts can also perceive that radio frequency radiation as light.” (56:42 | Nick Pineault) Links EMF Hazards Summit 2024: The Hidden Epidemic of Electro-Sensitivity: Starts April 11 Register here: https://NGMdiainc.ontralink.com/t?orid=153258&opid=18 To receive a FREE infographic of the Ideal Circadian Day & join our email list: https://www.quantumbiologycollective.com/qbc-newsletter-aqb To find a practitioner who understands quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org To see details about the Applied Quantum Certification: www.appliedquantumbiology.com Follow on Instagram & Facebook: @quantumbiologycollecitve Twitter: @quantumhealthtv Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
Threats of violence didn't keep Dr. William Cook and his staff from treating the growing number of HIV-positive patients in Austin, Indiana. Their efforts were paying off with more and more people beginning treatment crucial to their short and long-term health. Then the government got involved. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. We're wrapping up our deep dive of William Cooke's fascinating book “Canary in the Coal Mine: A Forgotten Rural Community, a Hidden Epidemic, and a Lone Doctor Battling for the Life, Health, and Soul of the People”. We'll also talk about ideas for how anyone can be what I call a different kind of P.I. - not a private investigator like me but a person of impact in your community. Decisions on how to handle the local health crisis started being driven by elected officials rather than trained medical personnel. Of course, the issue of IV drug use that fueled the spread of HIV infections was sharply debated. But the underlying poverty and hopelessness that factored in were mostly ignored. It seemed like the infection itself became the issue, not the well-being of the people who were suffering from its effects. And very little was being done to address the root causes of the epidemic - domestic violence, generational poverty, a lack of resources, and other things that led to a sense of desperation and hopelessness that fueled the sex work and drug abuse that was spreading the HIV virus. Outside entities were trying to fix a problem they didn't completely understand. Situations like this are where local churches can and should step in to do whatever they can. Everyone was going to have to set aside egos and the desire for control to work together if things were going to get any better for the citizens of Austin. Let's take a quick look at Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector from Luke 18:9-14, and I'm reading from the New LIving Translation: Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer[a]: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I'm certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.' “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.' I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” I love parables. Words from the mouth of Jesus himself that are often so much deeper than they appear at first glance. The Pharisee thought he was righteous, but his heart was exposed with the self-contered prayer that he prayed. The tax collector knew just how much he needed God's mercy, so he received it. But it's easy to miss the very beginning of this parable - the fact that Jesus boldly told this story to people who were acting just like the Pharisse in the story. He is giving them the opportunity to see themselves in this story and hopefully re-examine the states of their hearts. He is doing the same for us today. What traditions do we hold onto, like dressing a certain way for church, that we've allowed ourselves to believe make us more in tune with God than those who dress differently out of lack of awareness for our custom or lack of resources to dress up at all? When we tell ourselves that certain people don't measure up to our standards, we forget that without Jesus, none of us can measure up to God's standards. SFX We're going to take a break here at the Unlovley Truth for the next three weeks. A new episode will drop on April 9th, featuring a slightly different format. We're still going to talk true crime and faith, but instead of using stories that have been written about in books, we'll be checking out truly contemporary stories in the news right now. Episodes will be shorter so they will be easy to digest and we will be focusing on crimes in and against our church families. I really believe that greater awareness of what is happening and how we can deal with it by taking proactive and practical steps is so needed in today's society. I hope you'll take what you learn and share it with YOUR church family so, working together, we can elevate physical, emotional, and spiritual safety in all our congregations. In this podcast, we're going to talk about a surprising hidden source of heart attacks. In his book "Hidden Epidemic," Dr. Thomas Levy reported that 78% of patients with myocardial infarctions and occluded arteries also had DNA of pathogens typical for infections in root canal-treated teeth. This type of chronic infection is known as chronic apical periodontitis and often has no symptoms. As you're chewing, you push bacteria deeper into the lymphatic system, affecting the heart and causing other inflammatory issues like arthritis. Infected teeth are often missed on routine dental X-rays. C-reactive protein levels in your blood are a biomarker for inflammation and can sometimes signify infected teeth. The infection can be in the tooth, gums, jaw, or tonsils. Pathogens in your mouth can create significant oxidative stress and free radical damage. One of the ways your body responds is by developing clots. Other symptoms include fatigue, chronic inflammation, jaw problems, and tooth sensitivity. To strengthen your immune system and prevent the spread of bacteria from your teeth, take 1 to 2 grams (500 mg a few times a day) of liposomal vitamin C. Vitamin C works as an antioxidant to lower oxidative stress in the body. Liposomal vitamin C is one of the only forms that can work at the intracellular level. Liposomal vitamin C will not cause diarrhea, even when taken in large quantities. BOOK LINK (HIDDEN EPIDEMIC - Thomas E. Levy): https://www.amazon.com/Hidden-Epidemi...

Do some people deserve the suffering they are enduring? Or Should there always be room for compassion when criminal behavior regardless of why a person did what they did, ends in tragedy? If your community is struggling to find its way in a crisis you'll want to hear how Dr. William Cooke has done it in tiny Austin, Indiana. This is Season 5, Episode 11. We're going to take a two part deep dive into Dr. William Cooke's incredible book, “Canary in the Coal Mine: a Forgotten Rural Community, a Hidden Epidemic, and a Lone Doctor Battling for the Life, Health, and Soul of the People”. We'll also talk about ideas for how anyone can be what I call a different kind of P.I. - not a private investigator like me but a person of impact in your community. The U.S. Census Bureau says that roughly 20% of the U.S. population lives in a rural area, even though urban areas make up only 3 percent of the U.S. land area. That often means that our rural citizens may not always have direct access to things most of us take for granted. In Austin Indiana from the mid 1970's until 2004, the down had no doctor of it's own. When Dr, William Cook set up his practice he had no idea the journey he was about to take. Not very many doctors start solo practices in impoverished areas, but Dr. Cook felt that was his calling. Some of his patients had never seen a doctor before. That's not something we expect to hear in America, is it? Every church has physical, emotional, and spiritual safety issues. Most just don't know it. Are you going to wait for a trainwreck to occur before you address them? Helping churches be proactive about safety is why I wrote “Reclaiming Sanctuary: Enhancing Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Safety in Our Churches”. I know how hard it can be to address unpleasant issues because I've been where you are - in a leadership position needing an intentional approach customized to the needs of my unique church. I'm offering a free 20 minute strategy call for church leaders to see if my work might be a good fit for you. Email me today at lori@theunlovelytruth.com and we'll start a conversation about your church's needs and how we can work together to create a customized plan for your church. Schedule your no risk, all reward call today! Luke 5:31-32 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” The teachers of the law, the religious folk of the time, tried to trap Jesus so many times. After He called Levi to follow Him, these leaders asked why Jesus and His followers would eat and drink with people they called “sinners”. How easy it can be to fall into that trap. Does it remind you of the people who criticized Dr. Cooke for his work, and even threatened him? Does it remind you of anything else? Maybe something you've seen in your church? I know I've seen it in churches I've attended. I've probably even been guilty of it myself. God can't use us when we are showing that kind of pride. Casting Crowns has a great song called “Jesus, Friend of Sinners” . One line that really makes you think is “Nobody knows what we're for, only what we're against, when we judge the wounded”. I know that using drugs isn't a good choice. Selling your body isn't a great choice. But we don't always know what has driven a person to make those choices. Jesus would've hung out with drug addicts, and the homeless, and the sex workers. So why aren't we? And if you do, I'm really glad to hear it. If you don't, maybe it's because you just don't know how. If your church doesn't have a ministry to feed the homeless, maybe you can work with another church's ministry or a local non-profit. I don't recommend going into a homeless camp by yourself though. Criminals will target the homeless because they are so vulnerable. If that type of ministry isn't for you, consider leading a Bible study in your local jail. I've done that before and the vast majority of the women I met had drug addiction issues. Many turned to sex work to feed their habits, or after being pressured by their so called boyfriend. They need to hear that there is hope and that God still loves them. You'd be surprised how many were raised in church and have no idea that they have any worth or value. This book that we made it halfway through today just breaks my heart. I was raised in Indiana so a lot of the places and names are very familiar to me. But really this book could've been set just about anywhere. Every communities struggles with these issues whether we want to admit it or not. Let me know what you thought of this episode!
