NAB branch closure convinces NSW Shire to support a public postal bank - Media Release 29/08/2023

The Citizens Report

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2023 4:22

After voting down a similar motion in September 2022, this month Temora Shire in NSW reversed its position and carried a motion to support a public post office bank. The dramatic change of view follows NAB announcing the closure of the local Temora branch, one of 38 regional bank branches NAB has closed or announced will close this year. The stated concern of some Councillors who opposed the motion in November was that a public post office bank would encourage the private banks to close more branches. NAB's abandonment of their town, leaving NAB customers to drive 54 km to Cootamundra or 86 km to Wagga Wagga, proves that it is the banks' intention to close branches anyway. One of the arguments for a public bank is that it would force the Big Four banks to truly compete, and that extra competition would scare them into keeping their branches open lest they lose customers to the public bank. This happened in New Zealand in 2002 when the government started KiwiBank as a public post office bank. The Big Four are all closing branches, but NAB is the only one to push ahead with regional branch closures in open defiance of the Senate committee that is conducting an inquiry into bank closures in regional Australia, which requested all banks pause branch closures pending the outcome of the inquiry in December. Not only has NAB closed or announced the closure of 38 branches this year, but it has also put dozens more regional branches on limited trading hours, which is the main precursor to closure. NAB has been exposed as being extremely deceptive in announcing these closures, in terms of both justification and timing. It sends the towns it is leaving a “fact sheet” blaming the closure on reduced customer visits to the branch, but in July NAB's top executives were forced to admit to a Parliamentary hearing that they only measure visits that involve deposit and withdrawal transactions. NAB does not measure any of the visits people make to bank branches for many other reasons, which means NAB has no idea if branch visits are declining. Also, NAB waited until after the Senate inquiry visited WA for hearings in Carnamah and Beverley to announce the closure of its Waroona branch, to avoid being called before the hearings in WA. Australian Citizens Party Research Director Robert Barwick has attended all of the hearings of the Senate inquiry, and has written to all of the Councils in Australia asking them to support the campaign for a public post office bank. Barwick said today that the Senate hearings, and Temora Shire's change of mind, reflect the growing revolt in regional Australia against the arrogance, predation, and dystopian agenda of the Big Four banks. The banks are forcing Australia to go cashless and digital so they can get all the profit for no service. The townspeople are saying enough is enough and demanding solutions, including a public bank to take on the Big Four.”

Senate inquiry saves CBA branches in 320 towns; ACP says nationalise NAB! - MEDIA RELEASE 11/07/2023

The Citizens Report

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2023 5:24

The Senate inquiry into bank closures in regional Australia has had another victory, with Australia's biggest bank, the Commonwealth Bank, announcing a three-year moratorium on regional branch closures. This announcement saves banking services for the next three years in up to 320 towns, depending on how CBA defines “regional”. Those towns can thank the Senate inquiry and Senator Gerard Rennick who fought for its establishment. They can also thank the NSW Shire of Junee and its Mayor Neil Smith and CEO James Davis, who fought tirelessly to save Junee's CBA branch, the last bank in town. Junee's fight was instrumental in attracting national attention to the issue of branch closures, which enabled Senator Rennick to win support for the inquiry. Nationalise NAB? By contrast to CBA and the other banks, National Australia Bank is showing it is Australia's baddest bank, by arrogantly ignoring the inquiry and continuing to close branches in droves. NAB was the only one of the Big Four to outright refuse the request of the Senate committee to pause branch closures pending the outcome of the inquiry. It has also misled the Senate committee in its testimony, and is lying to its customers about numbers of branch visits. NAB closed three regional branches in Victoria on 6 July: Inverloch, Jeparit, and Kyneton. It was already planning to close its Queanbeyan in NSW and Boonah in Qld branches on 20 July, and Biggenden, Qld and Dunsborough, WA on 27 July. NAB has now announced 9 more regional branch closures, mostly in NSW: Wellington and Warren on 22 August; Gilgandra and Lake Cargelligo on 24 August; Gosford on 31 August; Gundagai on 26 September; as well as Temora, Tatura and Kilmore in Victoria on 28 September. These are all branches which were on the list of 64 branches where NAB reduced business hours earlier in the year, which the Australian Citizens Party warned in a 19 April release was a sure indication they were in the firing line to be closed. That means 48 more branches can also expect to be closed soon. Independent journalist Dale Webster has exposed NAB in her news service "The Regional" for misleading the Senate inquiry in the Sale hearing about its NAB agency in Maffra, Victoria. On 3 July The Regional also exposed NAB for deliberately deceiving the customers of branches it is closing, by claiming in Fact Sheets that branch visits have fallen dramatically. However, the figures in the Fact Sheets only include over-the-counter banking transactions, and not the many other visits customers make for other reasons, including “to sort out I.T. issues, provide proof-of-identity documents, remove or add names to accounts, appointments for term deposit changes, to speak to staff about loans, meetings with managers or any other activity that is not a deposit or withdrawal”. ACP Research Director Robert Barwick today called on the Senate Committee and the Parliament to take serious action against NAB for its appalling and deceptive behaviour, to force an immediate pause on branch closures. Quote: “The Senate Committee has demonstrated that by standing up to banks, it can force them to back down, as Westpac and CBA have”. “What will it take to stop NAB's wave of destruction? “Maybe the solution is to nationalise NAB? After all, the ACP and many others see the long-term solution as a government bank, like a post office bank, to force the private banks to compete, and ‘national' actually means government-owned—it's already in NAB's name. “Should National Australia Bank become Australia's national bank, to actually serve customers rather than gouge them, save cash and branches, and introduce real banking competition?”

A Temora farmer by birth, Sam O'Rafferty's (T: @SamORafferty1) agricultural journey has been determined by water, and the lack of it. He grew up in the Millenium Drought and for 18 months helped his family cart water from town to support the needs of their mixed farm. But farming was in Sam's blood and the drought did not deter him from following agriculture to university. During holidays lack of water once again influenced him when he worked as an irrigation overseer, experiencing extended extreme heat periods, which caused increased water demand for crops and tightened irrigation schedules. Coming full circle, Sam now works as an irrigation agronomist in the Riverina in a wet year and is seeing 100% water allocations lead to record crops, though he knows the next drought will be just around the corner. “My aim is to continually improve water use efficiency and productivity on farm and help producers adapt to the variability in the climate. This will come through a variety of improvements to on-farm water delivery systems, plant genetics and improved soil management practices.” Don't forget to send us an email if you know of a story that we should tell at hello@generationag.com.au *Become a Patreon Partner* - https://patreon.com/generationag Find us here: Instagram: @generation.ag Twitter: @generation_ag Website: www.generationag.com.au

Warbirds Downunder 2018 was held at Temora on the 12th and 13th of October 2018. To all the people and volunteers behind the scenes we thank you for putting on such a wonderful show and I know the aviation community and the public are looking forward to the next one in 2020. Here at Australian Aviation we were lucky enough to spend the day there on Friday the 12th and we took some time to meet and speak with some of the display pilots and the people that make this great airshow possible. Warbirds Downunder isn’t like any other regular airshow, the beautifully restored aircraft evoke a deep passion for aviation that bring us all together. For many of us our interest and love of aviation started with a picture of a spitfire or a mustang and as I’m sure you’ll agree, there are not to many things better than hearing and seeing one of those aircraft in action. Take a listen as even the most senior and seasoned display pilots are excited and moved by the wonderfully restored machines at Warbirds Downunder.

On this podcast we are joined by Roulette #4 and Roulette #7 from the Royal Australian Air Force aerobatic display team The Roulettes. The next event for the Roulettes is the Temora Airshow, Warbirds Downunder which is coming up on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th of October 2018. It will be the last time that the public will be able to see the Roulettes in the PC9 at Temora so we encourage you to come on out to the airshow and watch their amazing display at the opening of both days. As many of the listeners would know the PC9 is coming to the end of its service life with the Roulettes and we discuss the transition to the PC21, the differences between the types and the new faster and louder displays that will be seen. Both Scott and Daniel also give us a great insight to what it’s like to be a pilot in the RAAF, the different and interesting aircraft types they have flown as well as the fantastic job opportunities within the Royal Australian Air Force. If you get the opportunity to come out the the Temora Airshow, or you're at any other airshow they are at, make sure you pop over and say hi to both Scott and Dan. https://www.airforce.gov.au/displays/air-force-roulettes https://warbirdsdownunderairshow.com.au/

We sat down with Peter Harper who is the General Manager for the Temora Aviation Museum. Peter is one of the key people responsible for organising the Warbirds Downunder Airshow for 2018. There will be a huge variety of aircraft both flying and on static display. They include everything from spitfires, to mustangs, a hurricane, F-18's, Hawks, a C17 and much more. Of course a show like this couldn’t be put on without the support of all of the passionate volunteers, so if you are one of those people, we thank you for all you do to make this happen. The airshow runs on the 12th and 13th of October and the gates open at midday on the Friday. There is is a jam packed flying schedule for all to enjoy on the Saturday and plenty of activities in the wonderful town of Temora throughout the whole weekend.
