In the interview, Hall discussed how writing the fantasy novel required her to build an entire world from scratch, including creating new languages, creatures, religions, and social structures. She said it was very different from writing crime fiction where she could draw from real-world events and laws.Rachel Howzell Hall is the critically acclaimed author and Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist for And Now She's Gone. If you are feeling sad, anxious, depressed, or stressed... you are NOT alone. I recently have been feeling those normal life pressures and realizing how it has impacted my mental health. So I decided to talk about it. No - it's nothing profound. And yes - I am fully aware that mental health is extensively more than what I talk about. But I hope it's a start. A start in discussing how our mental health is impacted, how we can protect it, how we can support it, and how we can take care of it if more serious illnesses and issues arise. And how we can be present for others who are suffering. How do we build community and a sense of self after loss, especially the kind of loss that echoes for generations? James and Ashley speak with Australian Sri Lankan author Shankari Chandran about her new novel, Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens, and how her efforts to find connection in the writing community echo her Tamil family's work to build community after being dispossessed from their homeland in the Sri Lankan civil war. Shankari discusses writing from a place of anger and love, the changing Australian publishing landscape, and how literature creates an archive of the dispossessed. This episode connects to our conversations with previous guests Nardi Simpson (ep 18), Luke Stegemann (ep 26), David Heska Wanbli Weiden (ep 40), in which we explore the legacy of mass traumatic events on the health of communities and society. Shankari Chandran was raised in Canberra, Australia. She spent a decade in London, working as a lawyer in the social justice field, before returning to Australia, where she now lives with her husband and children. She is the author of two previous novels, Song of the Sun God, and The Barrier, and has been shortlisted for the Fairway National Literary Award and the Norma K Hemming Award for speculative fiction. Learn more about Shankari on her website, and buy a copy of Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens from your local bookshop, Booktopia or wherever else books are sold. At the beginning of Rachel Howzell Hall's latest crime novel, AND NOW SHE'S GONE, a fledgling black female private investigator, Gray Sykes, is trying to find a client's girlfriend who has disappeared. The client, an arrogant doctor, seems more concerned about Gray retrieving his dog who disappeared with his girlfriend, than the girlfriend. But as the novel progresses it weaves a second storyline of another young woman that disappeared. With these two storylines, Hall weaves a tale of secrets, fear, and violence while sprinkling her protagonist with small flaws that makes Gray an endearing character that lightens the mood of the novel at times. Rachel Howzell Hall, author of the bestseller THEY ALL FALL DOWN and writes the acclaimed Lou Norton series which features a black female Los Angeles homicide detective. She is also the co-author with James Patterson of the novel The Good Sister.

RACHEL HOWZELL HALL is the author of eight novels, including the critically-acclaimed Detective Elouise Norton series. Her standalone thriller THEY ALL FALL DOWN which came out in April pays homage to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. The third in her Lou Norton series, Trail of Echoes, received a Kirkus Star and was one of Kirkus Reviews 'Books That Kept Us Up All Night.' Land of Shadows and Skies of Ash (Forge) were included on the Los Angeles Times' "Books to Read This Summer" for 2014 and 2015, and the New York Times called Lou Norton "a formidable fighter--someone you want on your side." Lou was included in The Guardian's Top 10 Female Detectives in Fiction." Rachel also collaborated with James Patterson and BookShots on "The Good Sister" in the New York Times bestselling The Family Lawyer. A featured writer on NPR's acclaimed 'Crime in the City' series and the National Endowment for the Arts weekly podcast, Rachel has also served as a mentor in AWP's Writer to Writer Program and is currently on the board of directors of the Mystery Writers of America. She was named one of Apple iBooks' "10 Authors to Read in 2017." She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter. Matt Coyle is the author of the award-sinning Rick Cahill crime series.
Happy August, readers! This month, we wanted a light beach read to help us make it through these remaining dog days of summer. Instead, we got a wild And Then There Were None-inspired murder fest where a man gets boiled alive in a hot tub. Fun. We read They All Fall Down, by Rachel Howzell Hall, and it's full to the brim of assholes. We read as an equally asshole-y lawyer lures them to a tropical paradise where they're cut down one by one. There are guns, cocaine, poisonous sushi and, deadliest of all, the world's longest silk scarf. Listen in as we discuss this motley crew of murderers and bandits and decide who had the best (worst?) death. No BCLChat question this time! In our next episode, we’re trying something new. Instead of asking you guys a question and sharing your answers, we’re going to pick a topic or issue to discuss and have more structured (read: researched lol) conversations about them. More episodes like our #RITASsoWhite discussion, for example. Next chat, we’re discussing black booktubers and discuss the issues they face on the platform. Thanks for listening and be sure to rate, review and subscribe to us on iTunes. As always, thank you to Suite45 for our theme song, Jones’n.
In Rachel Howzell Hall’s new novel THEY ALL FALL DOWN, the protagonist Miriam Macy, is a 40 something year divorced mother of a teenaged daughter who has seen better days. She has legal problems, anxiety issues, and a contentious relationship with her exhusband and daughter. When she is invited to participate in a reality show on an island in Mexico, she hopes that the magic missing in her life will return with this adventure. Instead she finds she, along with six other people, were invited to the island to under false pretenses. THEY ALL FALL DOWN is a contemporary morality play that examines the wages of sins from from the perspective of a black woman who once thought she had it all.
Happy July! It's a chattier chat than usual as we dig into some book news from around Twitter and the business pages. Angie Thomas kicks off Twitter controversy by ... asking not to be tagged in reviews? Microsoft shut down its ebook service, meaning customers who bought books through that service lost them. This is a good reminder to us all that we don’t actually own our ebooks. Loud, ignorant people on the internet are mad that Halle Bailey got a job as Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid remake. We also asked you all what upcoming releases you're most looking forward to. You gave us some great titles to add to our TBR. Thanks to @curvyblackgeek, @almost_esq, @IamTammiJ and @charelliam for sending us their picks! As always, thanks for listening and be sure to check out our next episode when we read and discuss They All Fall Down by Rachel Howzell Hall.
