HANetf head of research Tom Bailey talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the launch of the new Future of European Defence UCITS ETF (LSE:ARMY, XETRA:ARMY, EURONEXT:ARMY). Bailey explained the rationale behind launching a regionally focused fund, following the success of HANetf's Global Future of Defence UCITS ETF (NATO). He said: “We think for many investors it kind of resonates with that whole theme of building up your defence sector via a European ETF with a European company.” Bailey noted that European defence spending rose by 11.7% between 2023 and 2024, outpacing global growth of 7.5%, with Germany's own spend increasing 23%. This uptick is attributed to geopolitical shifts and the drive for strategic autonomy. Bailey highlighted a growing preference within Europe to source defence equipment domestically, reducing reliance on US firms, which currently account for around 60% of European defence procurement. He also pointed to political developments in the US, including recent tariff announcements and perceived isolationist policies, as reinforcing Europe's need for self-reliance in defence. The ARMY ETF is currently listed on the London Stock Exchange, Xetra (Germany), and Euronext Paris, with plans to launch in Italy. Bailey emphasised HANetf's identity as a European company as central to the ETF's appeal and alignment with strategic autonomy objectives. HANetf head of research Tom Bailey talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the economic and market outlook for 2025. Bailey noted a generally benign global economic environment, driven by a strong US economy and easing monetary policies. However, he warned of emerging inflation risks tied to government fiscal positions and geopolitical uncertainties. Bailey highlighted key themes such as the structural demand for copper, driven by renewable energy, electric vehicles, and AI infrastructure. He explained that copper's role is expanding beyond traditional sectors, becoming vital for the energy transition and technology advancements. On uranium, Bailey acknowledged a disappointing 2024 but emphasised the bullish long-term outlook. He pointed to strong demand growth, supply constraints, and bipartisan U.S. support for nuclear energy as catalysts for the sector. The expansion of AI and data centres, along with industrial shifts in emerging markets, was also noted as a driver of high energy demand, further strengthening the case for nuclear energy. Bailey concluded with optimism for both copper and uranium, underpinned by their critical roles in the global energy transition and emerging technologies. The Thompson Twins were one of the greatest bands of the early MTV era, pumping out hit after hit while offering an emotional resonance that transcended the typical chart fare. Singer/songwriter Tom Bailey is still very much at it, making vital new music and touring, and he doesn't shy away from the difficult questions. He's a terrific interview. Here's just some of the many things we touch on in this podcast: The Thompson Twins' barely known origins as a 7-person post-punk outfit that played thoroughly unhinged live shows; How their first huge hit wound up making more than half the band's members redundant; And the incredible ad hoc superstar version of the band that was assembled to play a one-off performance at Live Aid! Shoot us a Text.Happy Independence Day! We're giving you a quick hit of BBQ prices, drones v fireworks, and some substantial travel numbers. Grab some mac salad and join us. It will be an expensive Fourth of July for most consumers as BBQ prices hit an all-time high. As BBQ essentials have significantly increased in price, up 5% from last year and 30% from five years ago.The survey checked prices for a complete cookout including cheeseburgers, chicken breasts, pork chops, and more. Feeding 10 people will cost $71.22, up 5% from last year and 30% from five years ago. The grocery list included: cheeseburgers, chicken breasts, pork chops, potato chips, pork and beans, fresh strawberries, homemade potato salad, fresh-squeezed lemonade, chocolate chip cookies, and ice creamFewer cattle are being placed on feed, leading to higher beef prices.“Yes, food prices are increasing, but they're not increasing as much as they have in recent years, and they're even a little below the long-run average,” said economics professor Andrew Stevens.“The consumer is waving the white flag on food inflation,” said Tom Bailey, senior consumer foods analyst at Rabobank as the cost disparity between dining out and cooking at home at its widest margin in history, we're seeing heightened fatigue and frugality according to PR NewswireMore cities and organizations are throwing out the fireworks shows and instead incorporating drone shows into their July 4th events.Los Angeles replaced the traditional downtown July Fourth fireworks with a drone show, aiming for innovation and wildfire safety. The move paid off as the crowd responded positively to the new experience.Nashville and the Kansas City Royals are combining drones with fireworks, while Napa and Tahoe City are using drones exclusively.Safety and environmental concerns drive the shift, as drones do not leave debris or risk fires.Drones offer creative storytelling synced to music but come at a higher cost than traditional fireworks, and shows often don't last as long due to battery life.Despite some initial resistance, the innovative approach is gaining acceptance and evolving rapidly.AAA projects a record-breaking 70.9 million travelers will journey 50 miles or more for Independence Day, marking a 5% increase from last year. This year's holiday travel period spans nine days (Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7), the longest ever observed.60.6 million people will travel by car, surpassing the 2019 record of 55.3 million.Gas prices are lower than last year's $3.53 per gallon average.Air travel will see 5.74 million passengers, a 7% rise from last year.Bob Pishue from INRIX warns of heavy traffic on July 3rd and 7th, with potential delays up to 67%.Top domestic city: Seattle; Top International city: Vancouver, BC, CanadaHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shawn Michaels and Sue Moll look at life at the Jersey Shore on 92.7 WOBM.
t took a few years, but Tom Bailey is finally reclaiming the wonderful legacy of the Thompson Twins. The excellent hit makers were everywhere in the 80s, but eventually Tom lost interest in pop music and moved on with then wife Alannah Currie to making dub and trance music under the names Babble and International Observer letting the Twins' flame die out. Thankfully, about 10 years ago he brushed off those old hits, put out a poppy solo album, and has been back in our lives since. He's now joining forced with Thomas Dolby and others on the Totally Tubular tour this summer. We get into all of it including working with Nile Rodgers and Rupert Hine, the late great Matthew Seligman, John uHughes movies, and the stories behind a bunch of songs. While we may think of the German band the Scorpions as an 80's metal band, they started much earlier - way back in 1965. Things didn't really come together for the group until the 1978-1992 personnel lineup of Klaus Meine on lead vocals, Rudolph Schenker on rhythm guitar, Mattias Jabs on lead guitar, Francis Buchholz on bass, and Herman Rarebell on percussion. By the time that the live album entitled World Wide Live came out in 1985, the group had established itself as an international commercial success.Recorded during their 1984 world tour, "World Wide Live" showcases the band at their best, and is a testament to their skill as live performers. The album was produced by Dieter Dierks, and was initially released as a 2-LP vinyl set, a cassette, and a VHS of tour footage showing off the band's stage presence. Folks, you got your money's worth when you originally purchased this album! From the high intensity of rockers like "Big City Nights" and "Rock You Like a Hurricane," to the raw emotion of ballads like "Still Loving You," the Scorpions deliver a performance that connects with their audience. Hearing the live versions gives you a sense of the band in a way that is hard to capture from the studio arrangements.Lynch leads this journey back to 1985, when the Scorpions were rocking the world like a...well...they were rocking the world. Big City NightsThis song from "Love at First Sting" leads off side two of the first LP. Schenker and Meine composed this one, as they did with many Scorpions songs. This homage to night life in the city was released as the third single from their studio album, but failed to chart. No One Like YouOriginally appearing on their 1982 album, "Blackout," this track deals with infatuation and desire. Despite its only reaching number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100, it is one of the songs that established the Scorpions as premiere hard rockers of the 80's.Still Loving YouLong before the hair metal ballad became a trope, the Scorpions demonstrated their ability to handle a slower song while still maintaining intensity and raw emotion. The lyrics are of a guy struggling to convince the girl he has lost to give their love a second chance.Rock You Like a HurricaneThe Scorpions' signature song first appeared on "Love at First Sting" the year before this live album was released. It reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, a rare Scorpions song to break the top 40. The track leads off side three of the album. The risqué video would be a prime exhibit of the PMRC in their quest for more parental control over child access to music videos. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Crazy by Patsy ClineA film called "Sweet Dreams" chronicles the life of country music star Patsy Cline, and was in American theaters in this month. STAFF PICKS:Whole of the Moon by The WaterboysWayne gets the staff picks started this week with the best-selling song from an overlooked British-Irish rock-folk band. Cerebral and artsy, with lyrics like "I saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon," the song is about individuals with rare depth. The Waterboys reformed in 2000, and can still be seen touring, primarily in Europe.Lay Your Hands On Me by The Thompson TwinsRob brings us a song from the British group that has neither members named Thompson nor twins. It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Thompson Twins member Tom Bailey has said that the song takes religious ritual as a metaphor for the connection between artist, performer, and artist. It's Only Love by Bryan Adams and Tina TurnerBruce's staff pick is the sixth and final single from Adam's amazingly popular album "Reckless," and also appears on Turner's "Tina Live in Europe" released in 1988. Loaded with melancholy and anger from a breakup, the song encourages the jilted lover to remember - it's only love. This song went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.Money for Nothing by Dire StraitsLynch features a signature song from Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, with a strong helping of Sting to boot. This Grammy Award-winning track was a staple of MTV, and spent three weeks atop the US pop charts. The lyrics are a conversation between two working-class men as they watch music videos. Once again, RaboResearch visited Natural Products Expo West, one the largest food trade shows in the world with more than 3,500 exhibitors and more than 70,000 visitors. Tom Bailey, Nick Fereday, and Cyrille Filott together with Maria Castroviejo discuss their findings, including how the consumer is being enticed by new types of marketing, some nice packaging innovations, and new food products. All believed that the show – while still carrying a lot of hype products – was more realistic in terms of the products on offer. The main focus now is on selling a product, instead of showing how disruptive it is.

Herb is joined by newly elected President and COO of Sargent Eric Ritchie, CFO Tasha Gardner, as well as Board Members Keith Bennett and Tom Bailey in the Flywheel Studio to discuss Eric's transition into President of Sargent. Though it may continue to be business as usual for most, this episode discusses why this is a big step in forwarding the Sargent legacy. Don't miss out on this episode and encourage all Sargent employee-owners to listen!Frequently Asked Questions:Is Herb retiring? No -- Herb is transitioning from President/CEO to CEO, and will remain the board of directors' chairman, while Eric takes on the president role and retains the Chief Operating Officer role. Is Eric going to take the company in a totally different direction? How will it change? Eric is fully bought into, and is taking on the responsibility of implementing, the strategic plan we completed in 2021, which has a focus on people and culture as its basis for success. At its root, that plan calls for us to: Invest in People; Adapt to Market Realities; Acquire Projects; Invest in Equipment & Technologies; Execute & Win in the Field; Celebrate & Promote the Wins -- then back to Invest in People. Herb will also be overseeing strategy and vision in his retained role, and Eric will be reporting to both Herb and the Board of Directors. The governance of the company is fully behind the strategic plan -- as is Eric -- and is expecting continued progress toward its initiatives. Is this just a step toward selling the company? Absolutely not. In fact, one of the main reasons for the ESOP was to eliminate that possibility, in practical terms, that we would ever need to sell. Without the benefit of 100% employee-ownership, at some point in time, the end of Sargent as we know it, would come. We have built a company with a financial position that is envied. We are strong financially. YOU own it. We're NOT selling it. We've grown a lot in the last four years since Eric has been COO; is he all about growth above everything else? No. But remember, this growth has taken place while I've been president and it's been a joy to watch and be a part of -- and employee-owners have benefited greatly. We ALL believe growth is important for us, but not at the expense of culture and the joy we get from being a part of Sargent's continued success. Eric's focus is more on a culture of accountability that can improve execution, than to meet any new, top-line revenue number. What will these changes mean to me? At the individual level, very few people will be impacted by this change, though two or three positions may have different reporting lines. There are no other position/management changes related to this at this time. The company enjoys successes that have been built long before us – for nearly a hundred years – and though we never have a birthright for success, we are well-positioned to continue the legacy thousands of Sargent employees have built as we head into our second century soon. 2023 was a big year for uranium, confirming that we are indeed seeing a nuclear renaissance. There has been a commitment to nuclear energy coming from environmental concerns, with COP28 seeing nuclear energy taking centre stage with 22 countries pledging to triple their nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Big producers are also signalling lower production. One of the world's largest producers, Kazatomprom, reduced its production guidance by 14% and said it is unlikely to reach its 2025 targets. In The Heart of It All (Melville House, 2023), Christian Kiefer imagines a group of factory workers and their families living in a once vibrant Ohio town during the Trump era. The factory is the only place to work outside of Walmart, the grocery store, or a fast-food chain, and it's owned by Mr. Marwat, a Pakistani man whose wife helps in the office, while their teenagers embrace American life. The family is upended when Mr. Marwat's parents move in. The factory foreman, Tom Bailey, and his family's lives are upended when their sick baby dies. Their daughter Janey's life is upended when she befriends the only Black young man in the town. Mr. Marwat's secretary Mary Lou's life is upended when her mother moves into a nursing home and dies. All of their struggles are exacerbated by small injustices but eased by small kindnesses in this sweet and thoughtful glimpse into the lives of people just trying to get by. CHRISTIAN KIEFER's novels have appeared on best of the year lists from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist and have received rave reviews in The Washington Post, Oprah.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, Brooklyn Rain, Library Journal, Huffington Post, and elsewhere. He is the author of the novels The Infinite Tides, The Animals, Phantoms, and the novella One Day Soon Time Will Have No Place Left to Hide. Christian is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize for his short fiction and has enjoyed a long second career in music, under the auspices of which he has collaborated with members of Smog, Pedro the Lion, DNA, 7 Seconds, John Zorn's Naked City, Sun Kil Moon, Boxhead Ensemble, Califone, Cake, Kronos Quartet, Wilco, Low, Fun, Anathallo, and The Band, among many others. He holds a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of California at Davis and has served as contributing editor for Zyzzyva, fiction reader for VQR, and as the West Coast editor for The Paris Review. Recent research, entitled The Future of Consumption in an 1.5°C World, carried out by the University of Leeds, C40 Cities and Arup, powerfully shows that the world's comfortably off need to do the most to reduce the world's carbon emissions and need to reduce the impacts of their consumption by two thirds by 2030. But this will only happen if it feels like a move towards something rather than being dragged away from something irreplaceable, if it feels thrilling, like something that spreads and becomes contagious. And, perhaps most importantly, if everyone can see that it is improving, rather than impoverishing, peoples' lives and experience. So what might a real push to support people in reducing their individual and household carbon emissions look like? My two guests this week are Dr. Vanessa Timmer, Executive Director of OneEarth Living, a Vancouver-based nonprofit ‘think and do tank' advancing sustainable everyday living around the world, and Tom Bailey, one of the co-creators of Take the Jump, a new and fast growing grassroots climate movement. As you'll hear, they have both been giving this a lot of thought.

Episode 154: Thompson Twins - Quick Step & Side Kick (1983) Part 3 Usually Sarah writes the episode notes and metadata, mainly because after spending so many hours editing, it's the last thing I want to do. However, this episode was recorded so long ago that I felt bad asking her to summarize it. So you have me, everyone's second-favorite host, to pen the show notes. With this episode, we move on to side two of this fantastic album, as "Watching" kicked it off on both the US and UK versions. We're going to cover some single reviews, chart positions, Bahamian funk band T-Connection, the fact that while Grace Jones famously appears on the album version of this song, she's NOT on the single, why Alannah might have been obsessed with dinosaurs, why a hit single needs to appeal to a small percentage of parents and not just the Pop Kids, and a music video that is perfectly packed with poultry. Oh, and there's also a voice mail from someone we all know and love - and whose voice features on one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s. It's a jammed-packed episode considering we only manage to cover one song!! We'll get to the remaining tracks next time - honest! Songs discussed in this episode: "Watching" And briefly, the awesome 2018 Tom Bailey track "Science Fiction." Episode 151: Thompson Twins - Quick Step & Side Kick (1983) Part 1 Brian and Sarah's first album discussion for 2023 is a record that goes by two names: Side Kicks in the USA, Canada and Australia; and Quick Step & Side Kick everywhere else in the world. Perhaps a little confusing, but not out of line, coming from a band whose name doesn't match up with the number of, or last names of, its members. This 1983 release by the Thompson Twins finds the size of the band reduced from seven members to three, and a bit of a shift in sound from their previous record. Brian and Sarah touch on these topics before getting into a discussion about the making of the album, its release and chart history, and reading some reviews. Brian also provides some detailed and interesting background on the album artwork and the famous Thompson Twins band logo. He then goes on to share his personal history with this album and forewarns everyone that he doesn't expect to be very objective when it comes to his final rating. Then it's on to more confusion, as our hosts explain that in addition to the album titles being different in the US and the UK, the track listings were also different. They plan to follow the US track listing, but for this episode, they're switching things up a little further, by talking about track two ("Tears") before track one ("Love On Your Side"). The first two songs up for discussion lead to some insightful and funny conversations, in which Sarah once again tries to describe or mimic synth sounds, Brian plays a quote from Tom Bailey which greatly influenced his musical life, and both hosts express incredulity at how Alannah treats Joe in the video for "Love On Your Side." They also talk about the Twins' live performances from this time period, which they agree are simultaneously tragic and infectious. Links to the videos and performances discussed in the episode: Love on Your Side Feb 24, 1983 Top of the Pops performance of "Love On Your Side" 1983 Performance of "Tears" on UK show "What You Didn't Get" Read more at http://www.permanentrecordpodcast.com/ Visit us at https://www.facebook.com/permrecordpodcast Follow us at https://twitter.com/permrecordpod Check out some pictures at https://www.instagram.com/permanentrecordpodcast/ Leave a voicemail for Brian & Sarah at (724) 490-8324 or https://www.speakpipe.com/PermRecordPod - we're ready to believe you! Hello! This week as world leaders- and Ed -gather in Sharm El-Sheikh for COP27 we're covering a tricky topic: what's our role as individuals in tackling the climate crisis? When we feel like governments and businesses aren't doing their bit to keep 1.5C alive, is it normal for us to feel disillusioned about the power that's in our hands? Our guests say that action on climate isn't all on us, but that it won't happen without us either. We speak to Alyssa Gilbert from the Grantham Institute for Climate Change about the enabling role of government and why we need to shout about the actions we're taking. We also talk to Mike Thompson from the Climate Change Committee and to Tom Bailey, who is recommending shifts he thinks we can take to make a difference.
