The second season of the American post-apocalyptic drama television series The Last of Us premiered on HBO on April 13, 2025. Based on the video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set twenty years into a pandemic caused by a mass fungal infection, which causes its hosts to transform into zombie-like creatures and collapses society. The second season, based on the 2020 game The Last of Us Part II, follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) five years after the events of the first season, after they have settled into Jackson, Wyoming, with Joel's brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Ellie's friends Dina (Isabela Merced) and Jesse (Young Mazino).HBO renewed The Last of Us for a second season less than two weeks after the series premiered in January 2023. Co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were joined in the writers' room by Halley Gross and Bo Shim; Druckmann wrote and co-directed the games, and Gross co-wrote Part II. Principal photography took place in British Columbia from February to August 2024. Druckmann, Mazin, and Peter Hoar returned to direct the seven episodes alongside newcomers Kate Herron, Nina Lopez-Corrado, Mark Mylod, and Stephen Williams. Gustavo Santaolalla and David Fleming returned to compose the score.Critics felt the season reinforced The Last of Us as the best video game adaptation, praising the action sequences, direction, performances, production design, and writing, though some criticized the pacing and considered the story incomplete. Across linear channels and Max, the season premiere was watched by 5.3 million viewers on the first day—a 13% increase from the first-season premiere.

It wasn't so long ago that Georgie learned there was a name for the way she felt ... being a Highly Sensitive Person. Maybe you've been there too? Discovering, for the first time, that there are words and experiences that are shared by others who also have this trait. That you're not actually 'too much' or 'too sensitive', but that you are a part of that minority percentage of the population who are more sensitive. Georgie found that discovery to be pivotal. And one of the biggest shifts ? An enhanced capacity to meet herself with compassion. Join me, Erica Webb, host of SelfKind, as I chat with Georgie Druckmann - doula, mother and highly sensitive person - about the impact of putting words to her high sensitivity and what we can all learn through her work as a post-partum doula. We talk about compassion, the importance of community care, and how, as Highly Sensitive People, we can navigate asking for and receiving support.About Georgie Druckmann:Georgia is a mum and postpartum (and previous) birth doula,  living in Naarm/Melbourne. With her relatively recent discovery of being a HSP, many  pieces of how she moves and feels in the world now make so much more sense and she can see how being HSP has made things harder at times but has also been her super power in how she nurtures others through being a doula, mother, partner and friend.Connect with Georgie:https://www.instagram.com/nurture.mummaAbout your host, Erica Webb:Erica Webb is a registered counsellor, somatic exercise coach and highly sensitive person. Waarom werd de video binnen no time offline gehaald?

We're on the verge of the second season of HBO's The Last of Us, and yet new questions percolate about whether we'll ever see another game in Naughty Dog's vaunted series. In a recent interview, Neil Druckmann told fans "don't bet on there being more," which is both alluringly ominous and obviously vague. That's good news for us, though, since it gives us plenty to discuss. Do we need more? Do we want more? Should we get more? Plus: Rumors are ramping up about one-time Xbox titan Gears of War migrating to PlayStation 5 later this year, while details related to Firesprite's cancelled Twisted Metal project have leaked. Also: PlayStation 2 turns 25 years old in Japan, Until Dawn Remake studio Ballistic Moon goes belly-up, a key Bungie designer joins Guerrilla, Monster Hunter Wilds smashes Capcom sales records, and more. Finally: Listener inquiries! Is it possible that Grand Theft Auto VI fails to meet either critical or commercial expectations, or perhaps both? What are our reflections on PS5 Pro now that we've had our own for some months? Should Canadians stop buying games from American publishers and developers in retaliation of US tariffs? Will Colin ever forgive his brother for continuously referring to himself as "The Dagster"? In this week's Gaming Fun Fact we explore the GBA eReader, originally released in Japan in 2001 and then later in North America in 2002, the eReader was able to read cards that a player would swipe just like a credit card. These cards included all sorts of goodies including full NES games, in-game rewards, and even GameCube integration.WB has shut down three of its studios, including Monolith Productions - the creators of FEAR, Middle-Earth, and many more beloved titles. This also comes at the cost of Monolith's upcoming Wonder Woman game that has officially been cancelled. On top of Monolith, WB also shuttered Player First Games, and WB San Diego. Fans of The Last of Us may be concerned to learn that The Last of Us Part 3 may never happen. In a new interview with Druckmann, he said that we shouldn't bet on there being more Last of Us as what we have could be it.Monster Hunter Wilds has already surpassed over 8 million units sold. This news comes just three days after the title launched, marking it as the fastest selling Capcom game to hit such a landmark sales number. The Monster Hunter franchise has come a long way since its humble beginnings on PS2 back in 2004 with the series selling over 108 million copies as of December 31, 2024.

What Trailers Will the Super Bowl Bring, Marvel's Wonder Man Series Resumes Filming, Argylle Disappoints

Whatever our reasons for tuning in or out this Super Bowl Sunday, as movie fans, there's no denying the impact the event has in terms of trailers and TV spots, with Paramount, Universal, and Disney all investing a record $7 million per 30-second Super Bowl spot. Paramount has three spots booked, featuring "Bob Marley: One Love," John Krasinski's "IF," and "A Quiet Place: Day One." Disney is expected to promote its Father's Day release "Inside Out 2" and the trailer for Marvel Studios' sole 2024 release "Deadpool 3,". Universal may feature spots for various films, including "Twisters," "Kung Fu Panda 4," "Monkeyman," and "The Fall Guy." Sony and Warner Bros are notably absent from Super Bowl spots this year, and there's no confirmation from Apple or Netflix about promoting their major projects during the event either. Despite rumors of its cancellation, Marvel Studios' Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is apparently back on track and actively in production according to leaked set photos and footage circulating the web. Production of the series, led by Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and producer Andrew Guest, began in April but was paused due to last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The images in question tease an in-universe film franchise depicting a marquee with the Wonder Man title card along with the character's logo and emblem. While we are lacking on official details, including a release date, the latest we've heard is that the series will fall under the new Marvel Spotlight banner and Sir Ben Kingsley is expected to reprise his role as Trevor Slattery. Unfortunately we learned today that a crew member who was a rigger has sadly died on set after falling from the rafters. The on-set accident did not occur during filming and we certainly share the condolences of the cast and crew. Although it debuted at the top of the box office, Matthew Vaughn's $200 million would be February blockbuster, Argylle, has not performed well, with an $18 million domestic and $35 million global start, coupled with a C+ CinemaScore. The star-studded ensemble cast failed to attract audiences as predicted by tracking. Despite Apple's substantial financial prowess, these big-budget films, such as Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon, are not proving profitable when considering the overall motion picture profit and loss sheet, lacking ancillaries like foreign TV, theme park tie-ins, or cruise ship exploitation, prompting questions about the streamers long-term viability. During the documentary "Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2," creative director Neil Druckmann hinted at the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3, revealing that he has a conceptual idea for another chapter in the story. Druckmann emphasized that while the first two games had clear concepts of parental love and the pursuit of justice, the potential third installment would be its own unique narrative. He clarified that a previously mentioned story about Joel's brother, Tommy, was not outlined for The Last of Us Part 3, but rather a separate project that was shelved temporarily due to other priorities at Naughty Dog. Elsewhere in the Last of Us franchise, Schitt's Creek star Catherine O'Hara has been cast in an undisclosed role for the HBO show's second season. 2024 Grammy Winners: o Best pop solo performance: Miley Cyrus, "Flowers" o Best música urbana album: Karol G, "Mañana Será Bonito" o Best country album: Lainey Wilson, "Bell Bottom Country" o Best R&B song: SZA, "Snooze" o Best pop vocal album: Taylor Swift, "Midnights" o Song of the year: "What Was I Made For?" In 2013, Naughty Dog — a video game developer — unleashed “The Last of Us” on Playstation to critical acclaim and huge sales at stores. The game sold over 1.3 million copies in the first week and less than a year after the game was released a film adaptation was already in the works. Unfortunately, just two years later the film was languishing in development hell and the rights to the adaptation eventually reverted back to original creator Neil Druckmann. Then in 2019, Druckmann was introduced to Craig Mazin, who was fresh off an Emmy win for his series “Chernobyl” and the two immediately hit it off, especially when they started talking about a fresh new idea to adapt “The Last of Us” into a TV series rather than a film. A week later they were pitching the idea to HBO and it didn't take long for the network to bite on the project with an order given to develop the series in 2020. Druckmann and Mazin worked hand-in-hand to stay faithful to the original story from the game while injecting new life into a nine-episode first season that ended up building an audience that rivaled the “Game of Thrones” spinoff “House of the Dragon.” The post-apocalyptic story at the center of it all focused on Joel, a hardened smuggler who has seemingly lost everything, and a young girl named Ellie, who is immune to the deadly infection that effectively ended the world, as they travel across the country together…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to tell some punny jokes and hope there's not a fungus among us as we review the first season of “The Last of Us”…Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell

Guest stars include Nico Parker as Joel's daughter Sarah, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, Anna Torv as Joel's partner Tess, Gabriel Luna as Joel's brother Tommy, Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Montreal Woodard as brothers Henry and Sam, and Melanie Lynskey and Jeffrey Pierce as resistance leader Kathleen and her second-in-command Perry. The score was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed for the game, and David Fleming. The Last of Us premiered on January 15, 2023. It received acclaim from critics, who praised the performances, writing, production design, and score; several called it the best adaptation of a video game. Über THE LAST OF US reden Ricarda und Mel Darum geht's... Die Geschichte von THE LAST OF US spielt zwanzig Jahre nachdem die moderne Zivilisation zerstört wurde.

D., Hou, H., Tien, N.-W., Wang, T., Harris, T., Druckmann, S., Li, N., Svoboda, K. Abstract: Behavior requires neural activity across the brain, but most experiments probe neurons in a single area at a time. Here we used multiple Neuropixels probes to record neural activity simultaneously in brain-wide circuits, in mice performing a memory-guided directional licking task. We targeted brain areas that form multi-regional loops with anterior lateral motor cortex (ALM), a key circuit node mediating the behavior. Neurons encoding sensory stimuli, choice, and actions were distributed across the brain. However, in addition to ALM, coding of choice was concentrated in subcortical areas receiving input from ALM, in an ALM-dependent manner. Choice signals were first detected in ALM and the midbrain, followed by the thalamus, and other brain areas. At the time of movement initiation, choice-selective activity collapsed across the brain, followed by new activity patterns driving specific actions. Our experiments provide the foundation for neural circuit models of decision-making and movement initiation. Copy rights belong to original authors. During the talk about the third episode of "The Last Of Us", Enrique talks about how if there is only 8 episodes of the season it was a waste to use this episode for Bill & Frank instead of developing Ellie & Joel more, Eli says he likes it because it was something more light in the depressing series, and Tristan dug the episode as he has no attachment to the series prior to this show coming out. Moving onto "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" all of Da Bois have differing opinions. Eli talks about how the entirety of cyberpunk genre might not be for him after not enjoying this show, Bladerunner and Cowboy Bebop, Tristan says he loves the series and enjoyed the dynamic between David Martinez and Lucy, and Enrique enjoyed the show after the extremely cliché start but felt the post time skip content was a big blur. V., Druckmann, S., Henderson, J. M. Abstract: Intracortical brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) require frequent recalibration to maintain robust performance due to changes in neural activity that accumulate over time. Compensating for this nonstationarity would enable consistently high performance without the need for supervised recalibration periods, where users cannot engage in free use of their device. Here we introduce a hidden Markov model (HMM) to infer what targets users are moving toward during iBCI use. We then retrain the system using these inferred targets, enabling unsupervised adaptation to changing neural activity. Our approach outperforms the state of the art in large-scale, closed-loop simulations over two months and in closed-loop with a human iBCI user over one month. Leveraging an offline dataset spanning five years of iBCI recordings, we further show how recently proposed data distribution-matching approaches to recalibration fail over long time scales; only target-inference methods appear capable of enabling long-term unsupervised recalibration. Our results demonstrate how task structure can be used to bootstrap a noisy decoder into a highly-performant one, thereby overcoming one of the major barriers to clinically translating BCIs. Think back a ways, to the lead-up to The Last of Us' launch on PlayStation 3. There wasn't one name -- but two! -- oft-invoked in media: Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley. The duo's work was well-established in the Uncharted series, and they would later rescue Uncharted 4 from development tribulations as a team. But the team split apart, and these days, Druckmann is the focal point of PlayStation's internal development efforts while Straley is a ghost of times past. A recent LA Times piece allowed Straley to elaborate on the situation, which led us to a Sacred Symbols-style deep discussion on Naughty Dog, credit, Neil and Bruce's seeming divorce, and what's fair and isn't when it comes to game development. Of course, news also plays a central role in this week's episode, as it always does. Square Enix is finally squashing its questionable Avengers game, BioWare loses arguably its most prolific writer, Spider-Man 2 rumblings have everyone excited, Forspoken launches into a questionable environment, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Have we ever managed to score a game at retail before its street date? What would a modern Nintendo and PlayStation collaboration look like? Would Colin ever interview Adam Sessler on Sacred+? Are people making up tall tales specifically to be included on our show? Thanks to our sponsors! Abstract: Neocortical activity is thought to mediate voluntary control over vocal production, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. In a highly vocal rodent, the Alstons singing mouse, we investigate neural dynamics in the orofacial motor cortex (OMC), a structure critical for vocal behavior. We first describe neural activity that is modulated by component notes (~ 100 ms), likely representing sensory feedback. At longer timescales, however, OMC neurons exhibit diverse and often persistent premotor firing patterns that stretch or compress with song duration (~ 10 s). Using computational modeling, we demonstrate that such temporal scaling, acting via downstream motor production circuits, can enable vocal flexibility. These results provide a framework for studying hierarchical control circuits, a common design principle across many natural and artificial systems. Copy rights belong to original authors. Rusty is coming back to Doctor Who. No, not that one. It's Russell T Davies, back to regenerate the greatest show on TV with his old production team. It remains to be seen whether he can recapture the magic, but the BBC must be desperate. Gaming PCs are incredibly rare, and they're likely to get even rarer. This means people will pay a massive premium, and that entry level parts don't really exist anymore. This makes us sad. Everyone should have the opportunity to build a PC and learn about electronics. Maybe in the post apocalyptic future there will be enough supply to meet demand. An Aussie team has created a significantly cheaper and easier to make solar panel that outperforms traditional panels. The sunniest place on Earth could really use some of those. They still need to scale up, but it's great to see Aussie scientists making huge strides. While many gamers might not know McGinty by name, those that grew up in the '90s will immediately recognize his art. The artist contributed some of the most iconic images in all of gaming, telling stories that immediately captivated players. McGinty was an immensely talented artist, as is evidenced by the impressive collection of work on his personal site, but for gamers of the '90s, his output will be almost synonymous with video game covers. He is perhaps most famous with Nintendo fans for creating the western cover artwork for the SNES version of Street Fighter II. While many people took issue with the 'westernisation' of the artwork at the time, it was very common practice for companies like Nintendo to commission entirely new artwork which was better suited to a particular region. McGinty's cover – which features Chun-Li fighting Blanka over the prone body of Ryu – has gone down as one of the most recognisable video game covers of all time. McGinty's association with Street Fighter would continue with Street Fighter II: Champion Edition on the Mega Drive / Genesis, Street Fighter II Turbo on the SNES and Super Street Fighter II.21st September 2021 – Endangered South African penguins killed by swarm of bees near Cape Town - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-58622482Sixty-three endangered African penguins have been killed by a swarm of bees in a rare occurrence near Cape Town, bird conservationists in South Africa say. The protected birds, from a colony in Simonstown, were found on the shore with multiple bee-stings. They had no other physical injuries. National parks officials told the BBC this was the first known attack at the world-famous Boulders Beach, which attracts up to 60,000 visitors a year. "Usually the penguins and bees co-exist," said Dr Alison Kock, a marine biologist with South Africa's national parks agency (SANParks). "The bees don't sting unless provoked - we are working on the assumption that a nest or hive in the area was disturbed and caused a mass of bees to flee the nest, swarm and became aggressive," she added. "Unfortunately the bees encountered a group of penguins on their flight path." Post-mortems found that the birds had been stung around the eyes and on their flippers. That is because "those are the parts that are not covered by feathers," Dr Katta Ludynia, from the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob), told the BBC. Penguins have pink sweat glands around their eyes and "that area is particularly thin - similar to human fingers," explained Shanet Rutgers, senior penguin keeper at Cape Town's Two Oceans Aquarium. One of the penguins had been stung 27 times. African penguins are distinctive for their small size, and live on the coast and islands of South Africa and Namibia - though some have been spotted as far north as Gabon.Their populations are rapidly declining, the International Union for Conservation of Nature says. The national body said in a statement on Sunday that it was still conducting toxicity and disease checks on the birds, and would continue to monitor the situation.22nd September 2021 – 10th Anniversary of Dark Souls - https://www.glitched.online/landmark-rpg-dark-souls-celebrates-its-10th-anniversary-today/ Ten years ago to the day, Japanese video game developer From Software released the critically acclaimed dark fantasy action RPG, Dark Souls, which would go on to change the gaming landscape forever. Refining the formula already established in Demon's Souls while introducing a bevy of new mechanics that have been adopted and replicated by other titles, Dark Souls would spearhead an entirely new sub-genre of gaming. Today, Dark Souls officially celebrates its 10th anniversary. Dark Souls‘ history is relatively straightforward in comparison to many other success stories in gaming. From Software first dabbled in the dark fantasy setting with Demon's Souls, showcasing their ability to tell epic but narratively mysterious tales featuring fantastical beasts, ambiguous NPCs and deceptively challenging gameplay. The last part has remained the foundation of all From Software games since, increasing their difficulty in newer titles like Bloodborne and Sekiro while still retaining their creative power for captivating and immersive stories, worlds and characters. Dark Souls was well-received by fans, often cited as their favourite game of all time. It's success went on to spawn two sequels, Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III; two creative spiritual successors in Bloodborne and the upcoming Elden Ring; and a Tenchu-styled action title Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice that heavily borrowed elements from From Software's trademark style. Demon's Souls may have been the first, but it was really Dark Souls that put the Japanese studio on the map, leaving behind a legacy that has been the source of inspiration for a number of games like the Nioh series, The Surge, Lords of the Fallen, Mortal Shell, and numerous others. Dark Souls is not only remembered for its staple difficulty, but inspired world design, creative boss encounters, a plot that simply begged to be dissected and explored further, and a blueprint for a new style of game that bounced off the success of this defining RPG.24th September 2021 – 20th anniversary of Ico - https://www.nme.com/en_au/features/gaming-features/ico-minimalist-masterclass-in-cinematic-and-emotional-storytelling-3051674 Released between those two films in 2001 and 2002, Ico (pronounced ‘ee-ko' – but don't worry if you get it wrong, I did so too for a very long time) is a single-player action-adventure game developed by Sony's Japan Studio. This game kicked off the career of Fumito Ueda. It was the first in a series of games that featured similar themes, including beloved titles like Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian. Ico is special in the way it handles abandonment and isolation. Devoid almost entirely of all dialogue, Ico essentially works like a silent film. There's a clear sense of loneliness that's present throughout the entire game. But there's also a feeling of hope. Ico's soundtrack is almost suffocating at times, though it also presents a number of beautiful pieces. “Heal,” for example, is one of the best save themes in any game. Ico's soundtrack is almost suffocating at times, though it also presents a number of beautiful pieces. “Heal,” for example, is one of the best save themes in any game. One of the game's fans is also Hidetaka Miyazaki of FROM Software. Miyazaki, the creator of Demon's Souls, and in turn the Souls series, is one of the biggest game industry figures of the last decade. Much in the way the game would inspire Straley and Druckmann, Miyazaki cites Ico as a game that showed him the different possibilities that video games as a medium had to offer.Remembrances21st September 1954 – Mikimoto Kōkichi - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikimoto_K%C5%8DkichiA Japanese entrepreneur who is credited with creating the first cultured pearl and subsequently starting the cultured pearl industry with the establishment of his luxury pearl company Mikimoto. He was inducted into the house of peers by imperial decree and posthumously awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Sacred Treasure. On April 18, 1985, the Japan Patent Office selected him as one of Ten Japanese Great Inventors. The company was ranked as one of the world's most luxurious brands by Women's Wear Daily Magazine and Mikimoto was considered one of the best Japanese financial leaders of the 20th century by Nihon Keizai Shimbun. He is also known as the founder of Mikimoto Pharmaceuticals, a company specialising in beauty products containing pearl calcium. Mikimoto Pearl Island is named after him. In addition, the "Phoenix Mikimoto Crown" used by Miss Universe winners as well as the pageant crown used by Miss International is credited to his patented work. Mikimoto began his search of an alternative method to produce pearls as the chairman of the Shima Marine Products Improvement Association. At this point the demand for pearls had severely outweighed the supply, prompting the consideration of an effort to protect the oysters. In 1888, Mikimoto obtained a loan to start his first pearl oyster farm at the Shinmei inlet on Ago Bay in Mie prefecture with his wife and partner Ume. On 11 July 1893, after many failures and near bankruptcy, he was able to create the hemispherical cultured pearls. The pearls were made by seeding the oyster with a small amount of mother of pearl. In 1927, Mikimoto met with inventor, Thomas Edison, who was in awe of Mikimoto's cultured pearls as it was "supposed to be biologically impossible". He died at the age of 96 in Japan.Famous Birthdays21st September 1902 – Allen Lane - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_LaneA British publisher who together with his brothers Richard and John Lane founded Penguin Books in 1935, bringing high-quality paperback fiction and non-fiction to the mass market. In 1967 he started a hardback imprint under his own name, Allen Lane. He rose quickly at Bodley Head, becoming managing editor in 1925 following the death of his uncle. After conflict with the board of directors who were wary at first—for fear of being prosecuted—of publishing James Joyce's controversial book Ulysses, Lane, together with his brothers Richard and John, founded Penguin Books in 1935 as part of the Bodley Head. Penguin Books became a separate company the following year. The legend goes that on a train journey back from visiting Agatha Christie in 1934, Lane found himself on an Exeter station platform with nothing available worth reading. He conceived of paperback editions of literature of proven quality which would be cheap enough to be sold from a vending machine; the first was set up outside Henderson's in Charing Cross Road and dubbed the "Penguincubator". Lane was also well aware of the Hamburg publisher Albatross Books and adopted many of its innovations. Most booksellers and authors were against the idea of paperbacks. They believed that paperbacks would result in individuals spending less money on books. Lane was a person that was very stubborn when it came to his company. He operated mainly on intuition and imagination. "He thrived in an atmosphere of crisis and came most fully alive under the challenge of great dilemmas." He was a creative genius that once he had an idea he would not stop until it came to fruition. Once he decided on creating paperbacks he set about in deciding what the books should look like and finding a name. He had decided that the books would be reprints so he also needed to approach other publishers to see if they and their authors would be willing to sublease the rights of the books. He was quoted as saying, "I have never been able to understand why cheap books should not also be well designed, for good design is no more expensive than bad." He was born in Bristol.Events of Interest21th September 2003 – The Galileo spacecraft is terminated by sending it into Jupiter's atmosphere. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_project#End_of_mission_and_deorbit When the exploration of Mars was being considered in the early 1960s, Carl Sagan and Sidney Coleman produced a paper concerning contamination of the red planet. In order that scientists could determine whether or not native life forms existed before the planet became contaminated by micro-organisms from Earth, they proposed that space missions should aim at a 99.9 percent chance that contamination should not occur. This figure was adopted by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) of the International Council of Scientific Unions in 1964, and was subsequently applied to all planetary probes. The danger was highlighted in 1969 when the Apollo 12 astronauts returned components of the Surveyor 3 spacecraft that had landed on the Moon three years before, and it was found that microbes were still viable even after three years in that harsh climate. An alternative was the Prime Directive, a philosophy of non-interference with alien life forms enunciated by the original Star Trek television series that prioritized the interests of the life forms over those of scientists. Given the (admittedly slim) prospect of life on Europa, scientists Richard Greenberg and Randall Tufts proposed that a new standard be set of no greater chance of contamination that that which might occur naturally by meteorites. Galileo had not been sterilized prior to launch and could have carried bacteria from Earth. Therefore, a plan was formulated to send the probe directly into Jupiter, in an intentional crash to eliminate the possibility of an impact with Jupiter's moons, particularly Europa, and prevent a forward contamination. On April 14, 2003, Galileo reached its greatest orbital distance from Jupiter for the entire mission since orbital insertion, 26 million km (16 million mi), before plunging back towards the gas giant for its final impact. At the completion of J35, its final orbit around the Jovian system, Galileo impacted Jupiter in darkness just south of the equator on September 21, 2003, at 18:57 UTC. Its impact speed was approximately 48.26 km/s (29.99 mi/s).21st September 1994 – Dinosaur Island premiered in Japan - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109627/ On this day in 1994 in Japan, Dinosaur Island enjoyed its premiere on home video. The Fantasy/Comedy feature starred Griffin Drew and Michelle Bauer, and here's the premise: "An army captain is flying three misfit deserters home for a court martial when the plane has engine trouble and they must land on an uncharted island. There they find a primitive society of cave women who routinely sacrifice virgins to appease The Great One, the top dog dinosaur on the the island. Mistaken for gods, the men must destroy The Great One or face death, but meanwhile they fall in love."The cavewomen's ranch was constructed on a remote portion of David Carradine's ranch.Shot in 12 days.Almost every day was extremely hot during the shooting of this film except one.A sequence with a stop-motion animation dinosaur attacking people on the beach was changed to a hand puppet dinosaur in post-production.The filmmakers paid an additional four thousand dollars for the poster art used to advertise this film.Antonia Dorian said she was nervous filming her first love scene in this film, especially since she was going to be topless. She'd danced topless in Vegas shows and in videos, but that wasn't the same as being on a small set surrounded by male actors and crew just a few feet away, all staring at her. Jim Wynorski gave her wine to calm her nerves. He also limited how many people would be on set. That and the wine helped her finally get through the scene. When the female warriors are chasing the dinosaur towards the ocean, you can see Malibu homes in the background hills.Wynorski said that Roger Corman asked he and Fred Olen Ray to make the film after Jurassic Park came out. "It wasn't so much a Jurassic Park rip off as a cavewoman movie", Wynorski said.Wynorski and Ray said they rewrote the script entirely. They knew who they were going to cast, employing actors they had worked with before, and tailored the script accordingly. They based the characters of the soldiers on characters in Stripes. Another influence was The War that Time Forgot, part of the Star Spangled War Stories comic book series. The movie was shot at Vasquez Rocks and David Carradine's ranch at Sun Valley over ten days. Wynorski says he and Ray made it "on a wing and a prayer".Wynorski later said, "I'd never co-directed a movie before, but it was smooth sailing all the way. "We do not 'push' people to spend in our games," EA said in a new statement, and we allllllmost believe them. This week, we're joined by Jeff, the other half of the New Dad Gaming Podcast, to discuss the intersection between loot boxes, kids, and EA's perennially bad reputation. But first, game announcements are up (like the random new update to Super Mario Party and Neil Druckmann's confirmation that the outline for The Last of Us 3 is done). Next, it's headline time. We're talking about the video game industry's first ever Academy Award, the new report that says Gen Z prefers gaming over other forms of entertainment, the new international eBay shop for the famous Super Potato retro store, and how you can buy the Queen of England's infamous golden Wii -- IF you have $300,000, however. Finally, we wrap up the show with a look back at Super Bomberman on the game's 28th anniversary.Follow New Dad Gaming Podcast:https://linktr.ee/NewdadgamingBuzzsprout Affiliate Link (https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=825751)Hosts: @wrytersview, @retrogamebrews, @newdadgamingMusic: "Gumption" by Russell Gordon at https://soundcloud.com/shredrussell-1Editing: @wrytersviewLogo: @thewellredmageSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/storymode)

Script Apart

Script Apart is a podcast about the first drafts of great movies. Or at least, it usually is. Today, in the final episode of our 2021 awards season mini-series, we’re delving deep into this year’s BAFTA Game Awards’ Game of The Year – The Last of Us Part II, with director Neil Druckmann and co-writer Halley Gross. If you’ve played this emotionally devastating survival thriller, you’ll know exactly why we wanted to cover it on this show. Set in a post-apocalyptic America brought to its knees by a parasitic infection, the game caught up with teenage survivor Ellie, five years after the events of the first Last Of Us. What begins as a tale of revenge eventually gives way to a profound meditation on the futility of violence, split into an ambitious two-part structure that forces players to empathise with the so-called enemy. There’s a reason why it sold over four million copies in its first weekend alone: The Last of Us Part II is a masterpiece in storytelling, full of brilliantly realised characters and sharp observations on who we are and who we could be as a society. We caught up with Neil and Halley to hear about how they wrote the game, turning back the clock to an early, open-world iteration of the Last of Us Part II that had a very different ending. Across a fascinating conversation, covering as much about this 20-hour game in forty minutes as humanly possible, we discuss the parts of their own lives they drew on to tell this story, the theme-building advice of author Robert McKee that helped shape The Last Of Us, and how a single detail in their first draft of the game’s final scene almost cast the future of the franchise in a totally different light.Speaking of the future – you may want to stick around till the end for some tantalising updates on a potential Last Of Us Part III, as well as the upcoming HBO TV series based on the first game. This is of course a spoiler-filled conversation so if you’re yet to play this astonishing game, hit pause, grab a copy on PlayStation today, then come back as we delve into every detail of this phenomenal game.Support for this episode comes from Arc Studio – the beautifully-designed screenwriting programme whose intuitive interface and host of innovative features helps you get the most out of your writing time – and Coverfly, who curate the best screenwriting talent-discovery programs into one place and connect emerging screenwriters with industry professionals who can bring their ideas to screen.Script Apart is a podcast about the first-draft secrets behind great movies. Each episode, the screenwriter behind a beloved film shares with us their initial screenplay for that movie. We then talk through what changed, what didn’t and why on its journey to the big screen. All proceeds go to Black Minds Matter UK, the NHS Charities Covid-19 Appeal and the Film and TV Charity.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek, with music from Stefan Bindley-Taylor. Decoding spoken English phonemes from intracortical electrode arrays in dorsal precentral gyrus

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.06.30.180935v1?rss=1 Authors: Wilson, G. H., Stavisky, S. D., Willett, F. R., Avansino, D. T., Kelemen, J. N., Hochberg, L. R., Henderson, J. M., Druckmann, S., Shenoy, K. V. Abstract: To evaluate the potential of intracortical electrode array signals for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to restore lost speech, we measured the performance of classifiers trained to discriminate a comprehensive basis set for speech: 39 English phonemes. We classified neural correlates of spoken-out-loud words in the "hand knob" area of precentral gyrus, which we view as a step towards the eventual goal of decoding attempted speech from ventral speech areas in patients who are unable to speak. Neural and audio data were recorded while two BrainGate2 pilot clinical trial participants, each with two chronically-implanted 96-electrode arrays, spoke 420 different words that broadly sampled English phonemes. Phoneme onsets were identified from audio recordings, and their identities were then classified from neural features consisting of each electrode's binned action potential counts or high-frequency local field potential power. We also examined two potential confounds specific to decoding overt speech: acoustic contamination of neural signals and systematic differences in labeling different phonemes' onset times. A linear decoder achieved up to 29.3% classification accuracy (chance = 6%) across 39 phonemes, while a recurrent neural network classifier achieved 33.9% accuracy. Parameter sweeps indicated that performance did not saturate when adding more electrodes or more training data, and that accuracy improved when utilizing time-varying structure in the data. Microphonic contamination and phoneme onset differences modestly increased decoding accuracy, but could be mitigated by acoustic artifact subtraction and using a neural speech onset marker, respectively. The ability to decode a comprehensive set of phonemes using intracortical electrode array signals from a nontraditional speech area suggests that placing electrode arrays in ventral speech areas is a promising direction for speech BCIs. https://twitter.com/alexpasc Nuevo Nexo, uno especialmente duro para hablar de un juego tan complejo como The Last of Us Parte 2. Pushing the system to its limits, Naughty Dog's foray into a grim, apocalyptic vision of the future became a title that would be talked about for years to come for its presentation, pacing, characters, and gripping story. A film adaptation was announced following the massive success of The Last of Us. At the tail end of 2016, Sony unveiled a sequel.  This week we take a look at the infected ruins of America as experienced by Joel and Ellie on their road trip through a world where a human life is as cheap as a bullet.
