My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Laury A Egan, author of the book Fair Haven. Laury is the author of fourteen books of fiction: Jack & I; The Black Leopard's Kiss & The Writer Remembers; The Psychologist's Shadow; The Firefly; Once, Upon an Island; Wave in D Minor; Doublecrossed; Turnabout; The Swimmer; The Ungodly Hour; A Bittersweet Tale; Fabulous! An Opera Buffa; The Outcast Oracle; and Jenny Kidd, with two titles forthcoming in 2025: Fair Haven and a new story/play collection, Contrary. Her stories have been collected in Fog and Other Stories, and her short fiction and poems have appeared in 85 literary journals and in multiple anthologies. Two full-length poetry volumes, Snow, Shadow, a Stranger and Beneath the Lion's Paw, were issued in limited edition, as were two chapbooks, Presence & Absence and The Sea & Beyond. Laury is also a fine arts photographer, a former book designer, and a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books. She lives on the northern coast of New Jersey. In my book review, I stated Fair Haven by Laury A Egan is a murder mystery set in the small town of Fair Haven. The opening scene is a dead, naked woman in a hot tub. Each page after introduces us to the characters who may be the killer, as well as some supporting cast members like the police chief, his girl Friday, the crime photographer, and a beagle named Cagney. And the possible killer? The list is lengthy and includes one of many lovers, her husband, a colleague, and a thief. Everything gets messier as we learn about the private lives of these individuals and realize that although the town seems quiet on the outside, the residents are embroiled in scandals ranging from hiding sexual orientations to financial fraud. Throw in some blackmail, attempted rape, and assault - and you have a real story! This is the latest in Laury's works, and once again, I didn't figure out the killer until the very end. She's very good at giving you the answer but hiding it just enough to keep you guessing! If you love a good suspense/mystery, then you'll love this book. We had the pleasure of interviewing Asinhell over Zoom video! For more than 20 years, vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen has been spearheading Danish rock and roll machine Volbeat, releasing eight full-lengths, selling millions of albums, and filling stadiums worldwide. Before fronting Volbeat, however, Poulsen formed death metal band Dominus, which recorded four fast, brutal albums in the mid '90s. When Poulsen was putting together songs for Volbeat's 2021 album, Servant of the Mind, he wrote a bunch of death metal riffs and saved them on his phone. Then, when he was done with the Volbeat record, he reopened the rusty gates to Armageddon and started putting together songs for his new death metal band Asinhell, whose debut album Impii Hora (Latin for Ungodly Hour), is a tribute to Poulsen's favorite old-school groups. The songs are rooted in crushing riffs yet injected with strong guitar hooks and shout-along refrains. While Poulsen sings in Volbeat and sang for Dominus, he didn't want to front Asinhell. So, in March 2022, he called his old friend, ex-Morgoth singer Marc Grewe (Insidious Disease) and invited him to join the party. "I had known Michael quite a long time and he always mentioned that we should do a death metal project one day, but I never took him too seriously because he was so busy with Volbeat," Grewe says. "Then he called for real and said, 'Yeah, I want to do it now. Are you up for it?' Immediately, I was 'Yes, of course!'"After considering drummer friends from established bands, Poulsen asked Morten Toft Hansen from Danish group Raunchy to join. Not only does Morten play like a fiend possessed, his and Poulsen's six-year-old daughters are good friends… and, it takes just 10 minutes to drive to Morten's place. The two veteran musicians started practicing and completed a full song almost every time they got together. Grewe was tied up at home in Germany when it came time to write the vocals, so Poulsen sent the singer phone recordings from rehearsals to start the process. Through Poulsen and Toft Hansen's years of experience and renewed hunger to destroy, they captured a firestorm in a bottle.Asinhell went from being a mere idea to recording the piledriving full-length Impii Hora in about a year. Poulsen asked Volbeat's management to help find a home for Asinhell and was thrilled when they mentioned that Metal Blade founder Brian Slagel would love the band. As soon as he heard Impii Hora, Slagel made Asinhell a top priority. "It's such a dream come true for me to get to be on fucking Metal Blade Records," Poulsen exclaims. "When they said they wanted to put out the album, I felt like I was 17 years old again. I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm making a deal with Metal Blade! How cool is that?' It was like I was finally getting the record deal I dreamed of when I was a teenager."We want to hear from you! Taking the sound of death metal back to its roots; We are joined by drummer Morten Hansen from danish-based band Asinhell. Morten, alongside bandmates from other heavy metal acts, Michael Poulsen (Volbeat), and Marc Grewe (Morgoth), didn't take long for their chemistry to develop into a full-fledged three piece. We talk to Morten about his relationship with his bandmates that served as a key factor into forming Asinhell in 2022. After a few sessions in a garage while catching the attention from one the worlds biggest heavy metal labels in Metal Blade, came their debut full-length LP “Impii Hora,” roughly translated from Latin to Ungodly Hour. While this may be a passionate side-project, Asinhell have picked up plenty of momentum, and “Impii Hora” is a testament to that combination of talents. Tune in now to our interview with Morten and be sure to buy and stream the new album from Asinhell, out now worlwide via Metal Blade Records.Stay connected with Asinhell, visit: https://asinhell.com/, https://www.instagram.com/asinhellmusic/ and https://www.facebook.com/AsinhellMusic/
VOLBEAT frontman Michael Poulsen joins us on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss his new death metal project ASINHELL For over two decades, Michael Poulsen, the vocalist and guitarist, has been at the forefront of the Danish rock and roll powerhouse known as VOLBEAT. During this time, the band has released eight full-length albums, sold millions of records, and rocked stadiums across the globe. However, prior to his leadership role in VOLBEAT, Poulsen was the driving force behind the death metal outfit DOMINUS, which unleashed four blistering albums in the mid-'90s. While crafting songs for VOLBEAT's 2021 album "Servant Of The Mind," Poulsen found himself composing a slew of death metal riffs, which he saved on his phone. Once the VOLBEAT record was wrapped up, he dusted off these rusty gates to unleash Armageddon and began piecing together songs for his new death metal project, ASINHELL. Their debut album, "Impii Hora" (Latin for "Ungodly Hour"), pays homage to Poulsen's beloved old-school bands. These tracks are anchored in punishing riffs yet laced with potent guitar hooks and infectious, chant-worthy refrains. Despite being the vocalist for VOLBEAT and previously for DOMINUS, Poulsen decided not to take the frontman role in ASINHELL. Instead, in March 2022, he reached out to his old friend, former MORGOTH vocalist Marc Grewe (also known for his work with INSIDIOUS DISEASE), and invited him to join the endeavor. When it came to selecting a drummer, Poulsen considered several accomplished musician friends. Ultimately, he enlisted Morten Toft Hansen, the drummer from the Danish group RAUNCHY. Morten not only possesses exceptional drumming skills, but his six-year-old daughter also happens to be friends with Poulsen's daughter, and the convenience of a 10-minute drive to Morten's place "sealed the deal". These two seasoned musicians began their practice sessions, consistently churning out a complete song nearly every time they got together. However, as Grewe was based in Germany, he had to work on the vocals from home. Poulsen facilitated this process by sending Grewe phone recordings from their rehearsals. Drawing upon their years of experience and a renewed hunger for musical destruction, Poulsen and Toft Hansen managed to capture a ferocious storm in a bottle with ASINHELL. In the interview, Michael talks about how ASINHELL came together, his absolute love of classic extreme metal, his three essential death metal albums, his admiration of late DEATH frontman Chuck Schuldiner and much more.
