Welcome to episode 104 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, for Black History Month, I talk about the 1993 album, “Merry Christmas Wish,” by the American R&B trio, A.S.A.P. I hope you enjoyed “Merry Christmas Wish.” I was thrilled when I found it, mainly because of how few English versions there are of these songs I've been collecting over the past several years. This is a fun, solid album and it lets me throw some Japanese songs into my regular Christmas playlist without any pushback from my kids, who sometimes get annoyed when they don't understand the lyrics. Be sure to join me next month when I cover a pair of albums by jazz singer Akiko for Women's History Month. Up first is her 2007 album, “A White Album.” Then join me on the 25th for her 2017 release, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” They're both great albums and you're sure to like them. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!
Welcome to episode 103 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I talk about the 2009 album, “Acoustic Xmas,” by Coffee Haus. I hope you enjoyed “Acoustic Xmas” as much as I did. I really like this album and will still play it all the way through when I'm in the mood. I'm still working to get back on schedule so I haven't been very active on social media. I'm hoping things settle down in March. Join me back here on the 25th when, for Black History Month, I'll be discussing the 1993 album, “Merry Christmas Wish” by the American R&B trio, A.S.A.P. It's a great album filled with soulful covers, mostly of Japanese Christmas hits, and one you won't want to miss. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. R&B starts Woody Rock formerly of Dru Hill and Jacci McGhee share their experiences as recording artists in the Music Industry. Jacci McGhee: Best known for her belted out duet with Keith Sweat on the hit song of the 1980s, “Make It Last Forever,” Jacci has returned, from a self-admitted dark place, to her passion and gift of singing. Actually, Jacci began her reappearance on the music scene in 2015 with step out vocals alongside Dominique, on DJ Jay Salter's international EDM hit, “Angel of Mine” (Soul Remix). Jacci's music career was spawned by her duet with Sweat on the R&B chart-topper “Make It Last Forever” and lead vocals on Salt-N-Pepa's hit “Expression.” Immediately afterwards, she was signed to MCA, now Geffen Records, releasing a top 10 R&B single, “It Hurts Me.” With corporate shake-ups, she got lost in the fray. Bing. Frank. Billie. Robeson. Aretha. Diana. Dionne. Whitney. Mariah. Michael. Marvin. Luther. It is rarified company, but indelibly classic and everlasting in the annals of American music and a club Luther Vandross' membership is permanent. Coupled with that voice, was Luther's unique ability to write and sing about love and the shared emotions we all feel in that search and enjoyment of love. Love of family, friends, the special someone–all were themes Luther explored with his music regularly, reaching many, becoming a staple in the most joyous moments of people's lives through his songs for the last two generations. At the time of Luther's death in 2005 following complications from a stroke two years earlier, Luther had been in entertainment for 35 years. From his introduction to the world as a singer on the first season of PBS's Sesame Street in 1969 to winning four Grammy Awards in 2004, Luther was a permanent and dynamic force in popular music. He crossed boundaries, starting with his earliest success as a background vocalist and arranger for David Bowie, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Donna Summer, Carly Simon, Judy Collins, J. Geils Band, Ben E. King, Ringo Starr and Chic. He produced records for Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick and Whitney Houston. He wrote one of the climactic musical numbers (“Everybody Rejoice”) for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and Academy Award nominated film The Wiz. Luther's reach is extensive enough that CBS Sports has used his rendition of “One Shining Moment” for their coverage of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament since 2003, and Luther performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXXI in January 1997 in New Orleans. For almost 25 years, from 1981 to 2005, Luther dominated the American R+B music charts like no other artist before or since. In that span Luther released eight (8) #1 R&B albums, seven (7) #1 R&B singles and another five (5) Top 20 R&B singles. He achieved crossover status with eight (8) Billboard Top 10 albums, including reaching #1 with 2003's Dance With My Father; and another five (5) Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles. Between 1981 to 1996, Luther Vandross released 11 consecutive platinum/double platinum albums on CBS/Sony's Epic Records label; and at the time of his passing in 2005, 13 of Luther's 14 studio albums had gone platinum or multi-platinum. Luther's success was not confined to the United States, with record sales of over 40 million worldwide since 1981, including four (4) Top 10 UK albums (one #1). In March 1989, Luther Vandross was the first male artist to sell out 10 consecutive live shows at London's Wembley Arena. Throughout his distinguished career, Luther Vandross was active in charitable causes with the United Negro College Fund and the NY Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, in addition to performing at numerous charity concerts, mostnotably Michael Jackson's Heal The World concerts in the 1990's. Luther also contributed the song “The Christmas Song” to the A Very Special Christmas 2 record released in 1992 to benefit the Special Olympics.Overall, Luther received 31 Grammy Award nominations, winning 8 times. Additionally, Luther won eight (8) American Music Awards, including Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist seven (7) times. Born Norman Washington Giscombe on June 6, 1957, Junior had been making the rounds of the London music scene, just as the Britfunk movement was bridging the gap of a racially-divided England with its friendly and inviting sound, one inspired by American R&B, soul and funk. After dabbling in rock and even Disco, Junior found his groove with producer Bob Carter and tapped into the words of wisdom of his Jamaican mother to create a song that touched a nerve with audiences in the UK and the US.With its universal message of love, knowledge, and self-acceptance, “Mama Used To Say” helped Junior make history as one of the first British soul singers to cross over to America, and served as inspiration and praise for a number of equally iconic performers.Show TracklistingGet Up and Dance (Norman Giscombe Jr.)Love Dies (Junior)Let Me Know (Junior)Mama Used To Say (Junior)Mama Used To Say - American Instrumental Mix (Junior)I Specialize in Love (Sharon Brown)Mama Used To Say - American Remix (Junior)Too Late (Junior)Oh Louise (Junior)Junior on Social Media:Website: https://www.juniorgiscombe.co.ukInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/juniorgiscombe_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/juniorgiscombeTwitter: https://twitter.com/JuniorGiscombeHost and Producer: Diego MartinezExecutive Producer: Nicholas "NickFresh" PuzoAudio Engineer: Adam Fogel Follow us on social media: @choonspodSubscribe to our PATREON: patreon.com/choonspod

We are back for PART 2 of our Destiny's Child “Destiny Fulfilled” journey. In this episode, Angie (@poetrysoul3) and Steffi (@inn_mho) break down the era! For the first 20 minutes of this episode, we read and play your voice messages regarding thoughts on Part 1 of our Destiny's Child “Destiny Fulfilled” episode plus a continued discussion on Beyoncé's “Renaissance” and cultural appropriation. As always, a huge shout out and thank you to those of you who submitted your thoughts! In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era's ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we talk about where Michelle, Kelly, and Beyoncé were at going into the Destiny Fulfilled era and how Beyoncé's enormous solo success overshadowed the girls' promotional tour. We also reflect on the “Poor Michelle'' narrative and how the general public contributed to the narrative. Plus, we share our thoughts on why we think Destiny's Child's “Destiny Fulfilled” era should be studied by future girl groups in the music industry. Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track. We hope you enjoyed our Destiny's Child “Destiny Fulfilled” journey! Album Info: Destiny Fulfilled is the fifth and last studio album by American R&B trio Destiny's Child. It was released on November 16, 2004, by Columbia Records and Sony Urban Music. A comeback release, it marked the return of Destiny's Child after the group went into hiatus, which allowed each member to release solo albums. Unlike their previous material, this record saw each member equally contributing to the songwriting and production. Sybil Lynch, known simply as Sybil, is an American R&B and pop singer–songwriter. Sybil gained notable success in her career with songs during the mid-1980s into the mid-1990s. She is the cousin of former En Vogue singer Maxine Jones. Sybil signed to Next Plateau Records in the United States (with a licensing deal with Champion Records in the United Kingdom) and began recording in 1986 with the release of her first single "Falling in Love". The record reached the top 30 on the Dance charts and began a successful career for Sybil, releasing her debut album Let Yourself Go a year later, which was a minor hit. Sybil achieved worldwide crossover hits with her cover versions of Dionne Warwick's hits "Don't Make Me Over" and "Walk On By", which were released in 1989 and 1990, respectively. The former became Sybil's biggest hit in the US, peaking at 20, and was a 1 hit in New Zealand. "Walk On By" is still, to date, the highest charting position for this Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic in the UK, peaking at 6 closely followed by Gabrielle (7). Sybil's self-titled second album became her biggest-selling album in the US. She signed with PWL Records for the UK market for this album, where it was titled Walk On By. Sybil would be signed to PWL Records until 1998. #rnb #rnbpodcast #rnbmusic #newjackswing #hiphop #hiphopmusic #DJCassidy #PassTheMic #HalftimeChat Halftime Chat is hosted by Mental Health Psychotherapist Nnamdi E.S. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Womack Sisters over Zoom video! As the granddaughters of the legendary Sam Cooke, daughters of renowned songwriters and producers Cecil and Linda Womack (of Womack & Womack,) and nieces of singer-songwriter and R&B icon Bobby Womack, music is in their blood. Taking the American R&B and Pop scene by storm, the music industry welcomes a new generation of royalty with BG, Zeimani, and Kucha, the three gifted and soulful siblings who make up The Womack Sisters (TWS). Although the best friend trio inherited the legacy of musical giants, they are forging a new path with their most recent self-penned single, "Blocked." Growing up in a close-knit family on the road alongside their four siblings, the sisters are forever grateful for the vocal and composing gifts they inherited. Dualling as both a loving father and industry guide, Cecil wanted his children to understand the inner workings of the music business. TWS experienced a once-in-a-lifetime childhood as they performed worldwide alongside their parents and touched the hearts of thousands working with the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osborne, Annie Lennox, and many others. They were also proud to work with their uncle Bobby Womack, performing background vocals on his final tours. Their upbringing and life-changing moments have influenced the sisters' sound, feel, and energy. Living in the glow of their family legacy, the sisters are now ready to step into the spotlight, share their talents with the world, and introduce a new wave for their generation. Currently making their home in Los Angeles, the girls are busy perfecting their upcoming debut album set to release in May 2022. Between their long lineage of enriching musical history, they draw strength from their bond, for it is as unshakable and as strong as the music they create. Their eighteenth studio album found The Kinks moving in a different direction than many previous albums. Low Budget would address many contemporary issues in song, rather than the subtle pieces and nostalgia found on earlier albums. The Kinks also recorded much of the album in New York rather than London. The result charted well in the United States, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200. It did not do well in their native Britain. The band members of The Kinks for this album were Ray Davies on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, Dave Davies on guitar and background vocals, Jim Rodford on bass and background vocals, and Mick Avory on drums. They are joined in the studio by Nick Newall on saxophone and Gordon Edwards (briefly a member of the group) playing piano on the title track. Ray Davies wrote all the tracks on this album. The album was more heavily produced than other albums and took a harder edge, which was appropriate for their arena rock phase for the group. There were a lot of diverse songs as well, led by the disco-infused lead single, "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman." Catch Me Now I'm FallingThe second track from the album uses Captain America as a surrogate for the United States, and criticizes the U.S. as a country fallen on hard times, and its allies as not coming the the need of America despite earlier times when the allies were help by America during and after World War II. The song was released as a single, but only in the U.S.PressureA high speed deeper cut, this song looks at pressure as a contagious disease, one that can be spread from one person to another, but which also can take over when you're alone. This song has a decidedly punk flavor. The call and response sound in the vocals gives it a more manic feel as well.(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman The lead and biggest single from the album reached number 41 on U.S. charts. Ray Davies was inspired to write the lyrics by the release of "Superman: The Movie" in the previous year. The disco feel was difficult for the band to achieve. The song itself tells of a desire to take on modern problems like Superman, though the protagonist is nothing like the invincible super hero.Low BudgetThe title track leads off the second side of the album. It describes a man learning to live much more frugally due to hard economic times. The song was in line with the recessionary malaise of the times, though people could identify with it when living through any recession. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Main Theme to the motion picture The Amityville HorrorThis popular horror show convinced us all to stay away from houses that say, "Get Out!" STAFF PICKS:You Can't Change That by RaydioBruce leads off the staff picks with an American R&B and Funk band. Raydio is Arnell Carmichael and Darren Carmichael on vocals, Charles Fearing on guitars, Larry Tolbert on percussion, and Ray Parker, Jr. on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and primary songwriter. This song went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and features Arnell Carmichael on high vocals and Ray Parker, Jr. on low vocals.Goodbye (Astrid, Goodbye) by Cold ChiselRob's staff pick may not be well known in the U.S., but is a hit from Australia. In fact, Cold Chisel has been listed as the number 3 favorite Australian band as rated by Australian musicians, behind AC/DC and INXS, but ahead of Midnight Oil and Crowded House. This rocking song with a boogie beat is about a guy who is hitting the road, and was designed as a set finisher.I Don't Like Mondays by the Boomtown RatsWayne brings us a cult hit that was inspired by a school shooting in California. The piano-driven piece didn't chart in the U.S. but has had staying power over time. Front man Bob Geldof heard the original story of the shooting while doing an interview at WRAS radio out of Georgia State. Geldof regretted doing the song because it made the shooter famous.Heart of the Night by PocoBrian wraps up the staff picks on a mellow note. This is from the album "The Legend." Writer Paul Cotton said this song was inspired by his "love and lust for New Orleans," and that the song practically wrote itself. Phil Kinsey, who performed on saxophone on Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" is featured on alto sax on this song. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Morning Dance by Spyro GyraThis jazz fusion piece was on the charts in the summer of 1979 and closes out of podcast this week.

This week I'm excited to welcome Alaura Lovelight, an American R&B singer, writer, and producer, who joins me to discuss her experience in the music industry. We open the conversation by talking about the treatment of women in the music industry, a career space that scrutinizes women's bodies more so than their music, and Alaura urges women to stop compromising their values for the sake of views or popularity. She looks up to the likes of Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Lana Del Ray, and Beyonce as role models that she tries to emulate. Alaura goes on to discuss how it was only after a life changing throat surgery that she really started to contemplate her love for music, noting that she didn't know herself beyond music, and that led her into a deep depression. When I ask her about advice she'd give out to people in her position, she notes that she wishes she had a female mentor, that she's learning to let go of more control when it comes to her music, and that she actually feels reborn since she changed her name. To close out this episode, we talk about her experience coaching young girls, where she feels connected to her younger self in each of the girls, and she's grateful to be able to pass on her advice. The Finer Details of This Episode: Alaura's early music development Her mother's creative and musical influence How women are treated differently in the music industry Trailblazers in the music industry that inspire her Alaura's throat surgery The value of a female mentor Alaura on the importance of self care, especially for women Why changing her name made her feel reborn Her experience coaching young girls Quotes: “I have been doing music since I can remember. I never remember not doing music.” “I actually had access to this million dollar studio, and I was the assistant. So I had keys to the building. And the composer had said to me, 'Do whatever you want', and I was like, 'Say no more.'” “My mom was, like, very heavily my teacher in terms of music, but that's a great question that most people don't ask me is that she was very supportive of my gift and my passion. The industry was not her choice.” “She knew she could teach me music, but she couldn't teach me about the industry. She had no idea.” “I've just always been fascinated by–I constantly study the people that I want to be in this position too.” “What do I love besides music? And the answer was, I didn't know.” “It wasn't working out the way I was told, which now if you look back, like every artist that you love has been dropped from a label, has lost a record deal, but that's cool when they worked it out.” “The more I get into the industry, the more I work with people that really have a very high caliber, the more I learn you just do it because you love it. And you let the rest kind of happen organically.” “Get a mentor, you have to have a mentor. You have to have a mentor in the space that you want to be in. Because like I said, I'll coach young girls now, and I didn't realize until I started doing that, oh my gosh, I've been doing this for eight or nine years, and I've never had a female mentor.” “As women, there's kind of this underlying unworthiness, and lack of knowing your self worth, and I think it has to do with–we're the caretakers of the world, we are the mothers, we are the nurturers–women are made to feel guilty for putting themselves first.” “Because I've studied music for so long, and because I've studied, like, the intricacy of different parts, I usually have a pretty clear vision on what the baseline should sound like, what the drums should sound like, what the guitar should sound like, the strings. And then of course, we all mold it together.” “I feel like even if I changed my name, it would give me wings to do something different–It's a clean slate.” “I just really aspire to have a brand that is very impactful, that has a reputation of empowerment and confidence.” Links: www.kellytravis.net Instagram: www.instagram.com/shedoesntsettle/ Alaura Lovelight on Instagram Alaura Lovelight on Facebook Alaura Lovelight on TikTok

In the late #1950's, Jamaican musicians began to incorporate American #R&B sounds into mento, and the hybrid form stabilized on using the same syncopated structure with an even stronger off-beat chord known as the skank (bonus info for music theorists: the skank in #ska is nearly always a major chord, while in #reggae it's generally a minor chord). Typical instrumentation was a #guitar, a bass (sometimes a bass guitar, but just as often a concert bass), drum, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone: still the core ska band today, although some bands have much larger horn sections. Many of the musicians of this era are familiar today as reggae and rocksteady musicians: #BobMarley probably being the most famous to American audiences, with names such as #TootsHibbert (reputed to have actually invented reggae) and Desmond Dekker still having some familiarity.
While reggae #music originated in #Kingston, #Jamaica, in the early #1960s, its popularity in the U.S. is almost as great as it is in its country of origin. Maybe that's because reggae is also a bit of a melting pot. The word #reggae originates from "rege-rege," a slang word for tattered clothing ("rags") and likely refers to its hodgepodge of influences, including both traditional and contemporary Jamaican music, like #ska and mento, as well as American #R&B. #nowplaying, #trending #60s #70s #80

Oldies but Goodies Reggae Legend from 60's 70's 80 Phillis Dillion U-Roy Jimmy Cliff Toots and The Maytals Dynamites Inner Circle Prince Buster.Reggae - Around 1960, in the slums of Kingston Jamaica, where the local bands were playing a musical mixture of American R&B, Caribbean, and pan-African sounds, drummers began to emphasize the afterbeat, the 2nd and 4th beats (4/4 time) in unison with the piano and guitar while the bass played walking quarter notes. The musicians called the sound "Upside-down R&B". It soon became known as "Ska". As time passed Ska slowed the beat, lost it's brass sound and morphed into "Rocksteady", performed with fewer musicians and using more harmony vocals. Around 1968 the influences of Rastafari and Africanism along with political and social unrest in Jamaica gave birth to "Reggae", with a slower, stripped-down, less "Pop-like" sound often with accents added on the 3rd beat. Today the term "Reggae" applies broadly to all the Jamaican born music that contains the original afterbeat rhythm.
Ska marked the true beginning of Jamaican popular music, coming to prominence during the early and mid-'60s right around the time the island was granted its independence. Ska ensembles were generally a blend of electric instrumentation and horns most popular in jazz (saxophone, trumpet, trombone). Although structurally simple, ska has a bevy of influences, synthesizing American R&B, jump blues, Jamaican mento, calypso and other Caribbean styles, big-band swing, Afro-Cuban jazz, pocomania and other local religious folk music, and European ballroom dances. Of those, the first three -- R&B, jump blues, and mento -- were the most important building blocks. Jump blues tunes -- both sax-driven instrumentals and vocal numbers by artists like Wynonie Harris and Louis Jordan -- had become wildly popular at Jamaican dance parties, with sound-system operators making frequent trips to the U.S. searching for the hottest and rarest 45s. As R&B shifted into rock & roll, less crossover-oriented American performers like Little Richard and Fats Domino also became Jamaican favorites. In 1959, when the boogie beat had become less important in rock-oriented R&B, top sound-system owners like Clement "Coxsone" Dodd and Duke Reid (as well as restaurateur-cum-producer Leslie Kong) took matters into their own hands, forming their own labels, acting as producers for local talent, and recording the music their audiences wanted to hear when it was no longer readily available in the U.S.
