Bhí sé an tsochraid de Pope John Paul. I 1996 tháinig an nuacht amach nach mbeadh post ag 21 duine sa chomhairle contae de bharr nach raibh siad ag déanamh go leor airgid. Chaill seisear a bpost roimhe sin agus bhí 15 duine eile chun a bheith as post. I 2005 d'aontaigh na boird den Centenary Co-Operative Creamery agus an Co-Operative Creamery I nDurlas chun teacht le chéile chun méadú agus forbairt a dhéanamh. I 2001 tháinig Emma Bunton amach lena chéad singil What Took You So Long. Bhí sé seo a chéad amhrán a chuaigh chuig uimhir a haon. Louis Walsh is undoubtedly one of Irelands most successful music moguls of all time. In a career spanning nearly 50 years, the Mayo native had an ear for talent and an eye for a story, helping him shape pop music history—one headline at a time. But Walsh was no stranger to bending the rules to get his acts noticed and has come under renewed flack after his appearance on a new docuseries ‘Boyzone: No Matter What' chronicling the rise of one of Irelands greatest pop exports, and for better or worse, his hand in their success. Just how did a small-town manager build a global sensation, and would it have worked any other way? Copy: From Boyzone, to Westlife, to The X Factor and beyond, Louis Walsh is undoubtedly one of Irelands most successful music moguls of all time. In the documentary, he reveals that he used to sell stories about Boyzone to tabloids to keep them in the public eye, including rumours, such as one that Baby Spice and Stephen Gately were dating. If they “got the front page”, he said, he was happy. Lynch recently said: “We've always known the way Louis Walsh operates. And in fairness to him, Ireland and the name Louis Walsh, he's a big name and a big fish in the music industry. Was his puppeteering of the press a necessary evil, or can the highs and lows of Boyzone act as a cautionary tale to a music industry still under scrutiny for how it treats its young stars Today on the Indo Daily Fionnán Sheahan is joined by journalist Ann Marie Hourihane and culture writer Louise Bruton, to discuss how a small-town manager built a global sensation, and ask: would it have worked any other way?

Again, thanks so much for sending in your thoughts! We also go through some quick Diva Headlines - Spice Girls reunion at Geri's 50th birthday part (Mel B, where you at???) and the trailers for the upcoming Whitney Houston biopic. In our Era Breakdown episodes, we touch on so many topics like career context, controversies/scandals of the era, marketing, music videos, live performances, album stats, and the album & era's ultimate impact and legacy. For this episode, we discuss the unique way that the Spice Girls were marketed and all of the endorsement/brand deals that they did. Shoutout to Pepsi! Of course, we can't talk about “Spiceworld” without briefly discussing the cinematic classic “Spice World”. We then discuss our favorite music videos, live performances and go through all the Spice-y receipts. And finally, we bring the Spice Bus home by ending on a very important question: Did Geri cement the Spice Girls' pop culture legacy by leaving the way that she did?Album Info: Spiceworld is the second studio album by English girl group the Spice Girls, released on 1 November 1997 by Virgin Records. Its music incorporates dance-pop music and production. The album became a commercial success worldwide, lengthening the so-called "Spicemania" of the time. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first big-screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling's best-selling book series, had its premiere in London's Leicester Square on November 4th, 2001. Among the glittering guest list were Sting, Cliff Richard, and the Duchess of York, but Baby Spice spoke for all of us when she told reporters “I don't know what to expect, but I'm really excited!” In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explore why Warner Bros was so nervous about bringing Harry Potter to the big screen; look into how Steven Spielberg imagined the film when he was briefly attached to the project; and discuss how Daniel Radcliffe was given the title role ahead of 60,000 other boys who had auditioned for it… Further Reading: • ‘Charmed 'Harry Potter' Is Poised to Set New Records' (The New York Times, 2001): https://www.nytimes.com/2001/11/23/movies/charmed-harry-potter-is-poised-to-set-new-records.html?searchResultPosition=164 • ‘Chris Columbus Interview: Harry Potter 20th Anniversary' (Screen Rant, 2021): https://screenrant.com/harry-potter-20th-anniversary-chris-columbus-interview/ • ‘From the archives: The Chatterley trial' (Spectator, 2010): https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/from-the-archives-the-chatterley-trial • ‘The Original Harry Potter ScreenTests that Started it all - Daniel Radcliffe' (No1 Potterhead, 2000): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WqhS5o52T4 #2000s #Film #Arts #UK We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

TW: eating disorders; suicide; sexual assaultI am so honoured to welcome my first ever Spice Girl to How To Fail! Today Melanie Chisholm - the artist formerly known as Mel C or even Sporty Spice - joins me in what is arguably her most open interview yet. She tells me about the impact of her parents' divorce, the extreme lengths of her people-pleasing as one of the most famous stars of the 1990s and her own struggles with her body. She talks bravely about the toxic impact of media attention on her weight, and how she developed an eating disorder. This led her into a very dark mental space where she felt dishonest about the image she was portraying to the outside world. Melanie also opens up about a sexual assault she endured while on tour in Turkey and her thoughts of suicide at her lowest points. And yet the extraordinary thing about Melanie is her resilience and her enduring gentleness. She is SO lovely, and we also have laugh-out-loud moments, including an unforgettable karaoke anecdote involving her and Baby Spice surprising some unsuspecting punters...What. A. Scary. Sporty. Baby. Posh. Ginger. Adjectives. Singers. Icons. Yes, in the mid-1990s, the Spice Girls were everywhere and everything to millions around the world with their playful anarchy, inspiring individuality, and pop-dream songs. But now, decades later, do their music videos feel more like...old Spice? For our special Pride episode, we revisit 2 of the music videos of this quirky quintet. The green-screen heavy “2 Become 1” and the Tarantino-esque “Say You'll Be There” showcased very different flavors of our Girls. Do these Spice Girls videos still pass the “taste” test? The Old Roommates wanna make love to you, babyyyyyy... but first they wanna discuss their re-watches through their middle-aged lens. Phil & Jake are joined by returning friend (and author) Eirinie Carson to rank the British Pop group Spice Girls, the outfits that the British call shell suits, and British food on the List of Every Damn Thing.Follow Eirinie on Instagram (@eirinieeee) and Twitter (@Eirineee), and read her columns on Mother Mag. Her upcoming book The Dead Are Gods will be published by Melville House. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The Spice Girls are, of course: Victoria Adams aka Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice, Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice, Melanie C aka Sporty Spice, Mel B aka Scary Spice and Emma Bunton aka Baby Spice. Was there a sixth Spice Girl? Kind of. Michelle Stephenson was briefly part of the group that would go on to become the Spice Girls. At the time of this writing, we can't provide a link to Lady Camden from Ru Paul's Drag Race because it would risk spoiling the season finale for ourselves. Lucy Pinder is, as Wikipedia tells us, a British actress, TV personality and former glamour model. Shes also joins Eirinie for going on "holiday" (aka vacation). Phil at some point got it into his head that she was a right-wing ideologue and it broke the spell she had over him. It's probably for the best, even if it wasn't true! We talk about the Spice Girls songs “Wannabe” and “2 Become 1”. The video featuring them in leather outfits is for the song "Say You'll Be There". 2 Live Crew are filthy Miami rappers who legally laid the foundation for all filthy rappers that followed. Mogul did an excellent series about them. We get into a little Chubby Checker discussion, including his songs “The Twist” and “Let's Twist Again”. Phil tells us about Don't Knock the Twist , is a movie that features Checker with a lot of associated acts including Dee Dee Sharp, who sings Mashed Potato time, one of Phil's favorites. Phil likes anything where the song tells you "It's the latest" or "it's the greatest" and Mashed Potato time does both. Robbie Williams is the cheeky chappie from Stoke. Harry Styles is Hazza? Dolly Parton is the Backwoods Barbie. Hank Williams is the Hillbilly Shakespeare. Phil mentions the 2013 Morgan Spurlock 3-D documentary about One Direction, This Is Us but then gets confused as to whether it exists or not. It does. Phil mentions the youtube video "A Scouser Tries The Wigan Kebab and Smack Barm Pea Wet" in which a guy from Liverpool travels 17 miles to Wigan to enjoy Smack Barm Pea Wet which is a roll with a potato that's been batter dipped and deep fried, served with the liquid that peas sit in. Turkey Twizzlers were a UK meat product that used to be served to children at schools until celebrity chef Jamie Olive raised a fuss about them. Bovril is a beef broth concentrate, formerly known as Johnston's Fluid Beef. Phil remembers a guy saying it's served hot in a disposable cup. Kit-Kat is a candy that originates in England but really hit its stride in Japan where they make many variant flavors and generally appreciate the brand. Lucozade is a sports drink, roughly akin to Gatorade that was originally sold at pharmacies. Kebab stands are places where you can buy kebabs. Phil said we don't really have them in America but it's not really true. In his old neighborhood in Queens they were all over. Phil mentions a shocking ad for breakfast in a can he saw in a lad mag. He was unable to find images because when people are preserving and scanning lad mags, their priority is the photos of Lucy Pinder or Lucy Collett and then when that's done they'll eventually get around to the horrifying pictures of canned sausage and eggs. The product was probably Hunger Breaks' All Day Breakfast. The name says it all. Her first and forever love is the 60's and Mod fashion. Please welcome Atomic Bouffant aka Elena Scalise. Elena's mom, one of her main inspirations fashion wise, was a nurse and true to the era Mod It Girl. And like Jill, she too had to fend off constant medical questions from friends and family. It's the curse of being a medical professional. She's got a house that is easily comparable to a themed hotel, but far less icky. Her vintage obsession started in the 80's when thrift stores were full of REAL 60's vintage. To die for. Elena had the highly coveted job of "Thrift Store Lackey". Honestly, who among us hasn't wished to take up a part time job at Good Will. Imagine having first pick... The trio discuss how we need to be mindful about what we take home for resale.
