Over the last 18 years, I've built and scaled businesses in some of the most competitive industries. In 2006, I started an import business from my dorm room that was generating $1mm/year in revenue by the time I was 20. By 2010, I co-founded United By Blue, a pioneering mission-driven apparel brand that grew to $20mm in revenue before it was acquired. While the acquisition wasn't the financial win I had hoped for, it ignited a desire to build something more transformational. In 2020, I jumped into the hospitality space, acquiring a rundown motel in the mountains of Pennsylvania at the height of the pandemic. What started as a risky move turned into The Rex Hotel, a highly rated boutique stay with 400+ five-star reviews. That experience fueled my passion for outdoor hospitality and led me to acquire an old campground in 2022, which I reopened as Ferncrest in 2023. With a focus on glamping and creating unique nature experiences, Ferncrest quickly garnered rave reviews and a viral online following.Today, I'm on a mission to make Ferncrest the premier outdoor hospitality brand, with the goal to open 100 locations in the next 5 years, through a franchise model that allows others to transform their own land into thriving glampgrounds. We're building a movement, and I'm sharing that journey with 600k+ followers on social media via our behind-the-scenes account @findingpromisedland. → If you're interested in partnering with us to develop your own Ferncrest location, or if you have a campground that needs new life (or a new owner!), let's talk.To View This Episode- https://youtu.be/U8u-J_2GP5g#philfriedrich #whoknewinthemoment #Brianlinton #campground #realestate

We flipped the script on it and made everything face the forest.” We're in great company with Brian Linton, Co-Founder of The Rex, a new outdoor escape in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania, for urban-dwelling explorers and travelers alike. Brian along with his wife Joanna, are no strangers to entrepreneurship and passion for the outdoors, having previously founded United By Blue, an outdoor lifestyle brand focused on conservation. Together, they jumped at the opportunity to purchase a vacant motel at the entrance of the Promised Land State Park during the height of the pandemic, relocating their young family to build the intentional modern accommodations that would become The Rex. In this episode, Brian shares his inspiration behind The Rex and in creating a nature escape that is accessible and approachable to all, and the community he hopes to continue to foster through its natural beauty and experiences. Top Takeaways [3:21] A search for a family cabin to escape the city during the pandemic unexpectedly turned into the purchase, renovation, and reopening of a forgotten motel. United By Blue's dream is to eliminate the need for this mission one day, so our pursuit doesn't stop at reusable trash bags. They prioritize sustainable materials and ethical manufacturing to lead the charge toward better business practices. Brian Linton (LinkedIn, Twitter) started out as a kid who loved fish and wound up founding United By Blue — a company that's focused on cleaning up the world's oceans. Despite starting the business in a recession, he's thrived and learned lessons along the way about becoming a leader, building a focused business, and not losing sight of what's really important. “When you look at the world, the world doesn't need sustainability at this point. It needs to get better. And so we want to be a part of helping the world thrive.” Learn more about The Journey at mission.org/thejourney. In this episode Summer begins by finishing the story of the rumpl blanket and the homeless woman. Again, be sure to check out www.rumpl.com and support amazing companies that believe in doing good and spreading good in this world. She then talks a little more about optimism, the importance of gratitude, and shares a BEAUTIFUL story of an act of kindness (and being a FREAKING AWESOME HUMAN). Here are a couple other companies that help the world socially or environmentally that I love supporting: 1. Cotopaxi - Gear for Good. https://www.cotopaxi.com "We create innovative outdoor products and experiences that fund sustainable poverty alleviation, move people to do good, and inspire adventure. Cotopaxi funds solutions that address the most persistent needs of those living in extreme poverty" 2. United by Blue. https://unitedbyblue.com "For every product sold, United By Blue removes one pound of trash from our world's oceans and waterways. And by that, we don’t mean writing checks or accepting donations. Our pledge to remove one pound of trash means rallying our team and like-minded volunteers to pick up plastic bottles, tires, appliances, and even abandoned trucks, from rivers, streams, creeks, and beaches." 3. Tentree. https://www.tentree.ca "Ten trees are planted for every item purchased. Our goal is to plant 1 billion trees by 2030." Link to photograph of guy giving free hugs blindfolded: https://www.instagram.com/p/4CartLq-tN/ Send me YOUR stories!! I want to hear and share your stories of times you've employed optimism to better difficult situations or beautiful moments in your everyday, things that made you smile or your journey to becoming more optimistic!! ESPECIALLY acts of kindness (not directly related to optimism BUT they are my favorite and part of my mission to spread more good). Email: ordinaryoptimist@gmail.com Instagram: @ordinaryoptimist Remember: A) CHOOSE happiness; you have the power to choose how you want to feel or react about anything. B) Be GRATEFUL. Always. For all things right now and all things yet to come. C) Get out and smile and make eye contact with someone. Trust me, it may be awkward, but it will definitely be beautiful and awesome.
