Send us a textEpisode 198On May 11th, 1985, football fans filled Valley Parade with hopes of celebration. Bradford City had just clinched promotion—their first title in 56 years. It should have been a day of joy, of triumph, of banners waving and voices raised in song.Instead, it became one of the darkest days in English football history. In just fifteen minutes, a fire tore through the Main Stand. It claimed 56 lives and scarred hundreds more. The tragedy was swift, brutal, and left a city and its club changed forever. This is not just a story about disaster. It's about what came after. About survival, grief, and rebuilding. About how football, even in its most tragic moments, reflects the spirit of a community. And now, nearly forty years to the day, Bradford City rise again—promoted once more. A new chapter begins, always remembering the one that came before.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

Just Passing Through Podcast

Episode 143It's been 25 years since that fateful day when Bradford City threw a spanner in the works of Ipswich Town's Premier League dreams. As the football world turned its attention elsewhere, a simmering hatred was born in the hearts of the East Anglian faithful – a grudge that has since twisted and morphed like a vindictive caricature, finding new targets along the way.Enter Leeds United and Huddersfield Town, two Yorkshire clubs unsuspecting of their impending doom, yet unwitting pawns in Bradford's cosmic football vendetta. Yes, you heard it right – Bradford City, the unassuming Bantams, have been quietly pulling the strings from West Yorkshire all this time, orchestrating chaos in the football leagues and laughing all the way to Valley Parade.Picture this: a shadowy council of Bradfordians, adorned in claret and amber robes, plotting over cups of Tetley's tea, declaring, “Let's keep Ipswich out of the Premier League – just for kicks!” Little did they know the seismic ripple effect their actions would have over two decades later.Leeds United, perennial yo-yo club and once the darlings of English football, found themselves ensnared in Bradford's wicked web. The Bantams' mere existence seemed to irk Leeds supporters, who saw them as an annoying little cousin meddling in their affairs. As fate would have it, Bradford's unrelenting quest for chaos culminated in Leeds' relegation woes, leaving Elland Road in a state of bewilderment and mild disdain for anything claret and amber. But wait, there's more! Huddersfield Town, the Terriers of West Yorkshire, fell victim to Bradford's jinx as well. Bradford City, with their devious charm and underdog spirit, delivered the knockout blow that sent Huddersfield tumbling down to the depths of League One. Oh, the agony! The fury! The misplaced resentment towards those pesky Bantams! And here we are, 25 years later, scratching our heads and chuckling at the absurdity of it all. Bradford City, the unwitting instigators of football melodrama, couldn't care less about the mayhem they've caused. They're too busy sipping their Yorkshire tea and enjoying the view from mid-table obscurity.Meanwhile, Ipswich, Leeds, and Huddersfield fans stew in their own bitter brew of football conspiracy theories, pointing fingers at the claret and amber-clad miscreants from Bradford. “It's all their fault!” they cry, shaking their fists at the Yorkshire heavens. But deep down, amidst the banter and the rivalry, there's a begrudging respect for Bradford City – the cheeky upstarts who dared to disrupt the football hierarchy and live to tell the tale. After all, what's football without a bit of mischief and mayhem? So, here's to you, Bradford City – the accidental architects of chaos, the disruptors of destiny, and the perennial punchline of football lore. As the world turns and the football seasons ebb and flow, we'll always have Bradford to blame and a good laugh to go along with it. Because in the end, it's just a game – and Bradford City, well, they're playing it their way, claret and amber mischief and all.Music -  The Zutons - Zuton FeverArctic Monkeys - Fake Tales of San FranciscoDandy Warhols - Bohemian Like YouSupport the Show.Insta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta

Welcome to this episode of the podcast, where we will be delving into one of the most tragic events in British football history. On May 11th, 1985, a fire broke out at the Valley Parade stadium during a match between Bradford City and Lincoln City. In just a matter of minutes, the blaze spread throughout the wooden stands, causing chaos and devastation. The human toll of the Bradford City Fire was staggering, with 56 people losing their lives and over 250 others sustaining serious injuries. The impact of this event on the community and the wider football world cannot be overstated, as it led to significant changes in stadium safety regulations and forever altered the way we think about the beautiful game. While this is undoubtedly a difficult and sensitive topic to discuss, it is also an important one that deserves our attention and remembrance. We will explore the causes and aftermath of the Bradford City Fire, as well as the impact it had on football culture and safety measures.Join us as we pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic day, and seek to learn from this tragedy to ensure that such a disaster never occurs again.Darren.#56Support the showwww.justpassingthroughpodcast.comInsta:justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

As a player, he won just about everything with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, and having been out of management for just over three years since leaving Southampton at the end of 2018, Mark Hughes felt the time was right for a new challenge when he was unveiled as the new manager of Bradford City a week ago. He chats to Clem about the hunger he has to bring success to Valley Parade and how he's enjoying getting to know his new club and players. 30 miles south in Barnsley, Carlton Morris has been winning admirers for his recent performances in front of goal, and explains how 3 wins from their last 4 and a positive atmosphere in the dressing room, has given him and the team a genuine belief that they may just avoid the drop, and pull off what looked impossible only a few weeks ago.

Old or young, we all agree that Northampton Town is really where it all started, Ivan. Bradford 1-1 Northampton TownIt's difficult to talk about the game at Valley Parade on Saturday without mentioning the performance of the referee. It's possibly the worst official we've had this season and it really wound Charles up. Still, after losing Kion Etete to a swing of the arm that Quest's TV pundit duo seem to think was nothing more than a natural movement, Mitch Pinnock sprinted the length of the pitch to open the scoring. Unfortunately, a second individual error in consecutive games by a Cobblers centre back allowed Charles Vernon to equalise and Jon Brady's side had to settle for a point. Ivan Toney Forgets Where He's FromAs if we weren't annoyed enough this weekend, Ivan Toney decided to forget all about his overhead kick at Dagenham and the time he spent at Sixfields as a youngster. In https://twitter.com/ivantoney24/status/1462160609441718283?s=21 (a Tweet posted after Brentford's 3-3 draw at Newcastle United), where he scored, Toney said: "Special moment today to return to where it all really started and see some old faces , even better to score but 3 points would of made it sweeter."Cheers Ivan. We miss you too. PostbagOff the back of Richard Hamley's email about his first game at the County Ground, Robert Salmons has been in touch with a real touch of kindness and class. Robert's found the original match day programme from that game back in 1965/66. Thank you for your email Robert! Tin Pot ClubsOn the Fan Club Slack this week, Gareth posed a fun question - What makes a club tinpot? Needless to say, if your an MK fan you probably shouldn't listen ;-p NTFC WomenNo game for the Women's team this weekend but this coming Sunday, the Cobblers travel to Stourbridge to take on Lye Town Ladies in the 2nd round of the Vitality Women's FA Cup. BSkyB had come to save us all from the pit of despair that we called the late 1980s in football. Valley Parade, Hillsborough, Heysel, Hooliganism and Racism all cast a bad shadow on the game and the rights to the Old First Division were burning a hole in ITV's pocket. So they ceded control of the TV rights, 22 clubs broke away and formed the Premier League and English football - and football on the whole - hasn't looked back. We start our journey in the first months of the Premier League's 1992-93 season. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Learn more about your ad choices.
