Virginia Smith Haden (86) passed away on February 19, 2024 and leaves behind a legacy of faith in God and devotion to her family and friends. She was an excellent baker, cook, decorator, seamstress, and gardener. Her homemade bread and chocolate pie could not be beat, and her azaleas and rose bushes were always immaculately cared for. She set the bar for decorating at Christmas, usually managing to fit more ornaments on her tree than most people could fathom. She loved country and gospel music, soap operas, collecting teapots, and swapping good books with her sister. During her 48 years...Article LinkSupport the show

Few designers in the 2000s pushed boundaries, stirred conversation, and made statements like Nicolas Ghesquière. At twenty-five years old, Nicolas took over the dormant fashion house of Balenciaga. As a young, unproven designer, no one foresaw the explosion of ingenuity that would follow. Ghesquière incorporated the influential creations of Balenciaga's storied past, while drawing inspiration from science fiction, to produce revolutionary looks for the runway and the decade. Season after season, Ghesquière's unique vision fused the past with the future, allowing Balenciaga to become a rising global brand in the decade. "Spring Flood Outlook Online" by Virginia Smith
Virginia Smith - On Heterogeneity in Federated Settings A defining characteristic of federated learning is the presence of heterogeneity, i.e., that data and compute may differ significantly across the network. In this talk I show that the challenge of heterogeneity pervades the machine learning process in federated settings, affecting issues such as optimization, modeling, and fairness. In terms of optimization, I discuss FedProx, a distributed optimization method that offers robustness to systems and statistical heterogeneity. I then explore the role that heterogeneity plays in delivering models that are accurate and fair to all users/devices in the network. Our work here extends classical ideas in multi-task learning and alpha-fairness to large-scale heterogeneous networks, enabling flexible, accurate, and fair federated learning.

This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
Today we kick off our ICML coverage joined by Virginia Smith, an assistant professor in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University. In our conversation with Virginia, we explore her work on cross-device federated learning applications, including where the distributed learning aspects of FL are relative to the privacy techniques. We dig into her paper from ICML, Ditto: Fair and Robust Federated Learning Through Personalization, what fairness means in contrast to AI ethics, the particulars of the failure modes, the relationship between models, and the things being optimized across devices, and the tradeoffs between fairness and robustness. We also discuss a second paper, Heterogeneity for the Win: One-Shot Federated Clustering, how the proposed method makes heterogeneity beneficial in data, how the heterogeneity of data is classified, and some applications of FL in an unsupervised setting. The complete show notes for this episode can be found at twimlai.com/go/504.
Daniel is an entrepreneur and was raised inside the church. His journey into understanding the nature of fraud and its application to religion started when he was excommunicated from his church for exposing sexual abuse. This has led him to ask the hard questions around his most deeply held beliefs. He has found healing through conversations around faith and abuse. He shares very personal stories with the hope that it will help others to find strength and healing. Rachel and Daniel have a wide-ranging discussion examining the logic behind the ideology of creationism. Daniel points out the common misconceptions of biblical literalism and by extension highlights the presuppositions that lead to vastly different interpretations of the biblical texts. Daniel explains why often in the most divisive issues the truth lies somewhere in the middle. He also expands on why difficult and honest conversations are key to unifying the most divided factions in both religion and politics. Before You Go: Rachel revisits Daniel's idea that religion is a sense-making apparatus. She examines the most important sense-making mechanism, the question, "Why?"
