This episode is a journey inside my mind as I try to juxtapose five decades of incredible work with one (as far as we know) racist image. I'm talking about Grace Coddington; former Creative Director at US Vogue for almost three decades, known for her imagination and brilliant attention to detail and for creating memorable imagery that has inspired many around the world and impacted every single advert and billboard. But it's that attention to detail that raised alarm bells back in 2019, when Grace was photographed at home, and in one of the images, she's standing in front of a collection of mammy jars. Many wondered why she had the jars - racist propaganda created to paint African Americans as ugly caricatures - while others wondered why they were on display. Unfortunately I didn't know about the jars when I made this TikTok all about Grace's impact on the fashion industry. So in this episode I have a lot of questions - can you be not racist but make a racist mistake; what is 'little old white lady' racism? Plus many others... I also throw makeup artist and brand founder Isamaya Ffrench into the mix, because she's been sailing very close to the wind lately, and her recent trip to Malawi has had some in the beauty community referring to her as 'cringe'. I'd love to know your thoughts as always, so feel free to get in touch over @beautymepodcast on Twitter or Instagram, or find me on TikTok @charissekenion. In today's episode of MECCA Talks, Kate chats to renowned celebrity makeup artist and founder of Westman Atelier, Gucci Westman. Prior to creating Westman Atelier, the pioneering brand behind luxurious, skin-forward makeup that improves your complexion as it enhances, Gucci had Hollywood in awe of her ability to create fast and flawless ‘no-makeup' makeup looks. This led to fruitful collaborations with the likes of Spike Jonze, Bruce Weber, Grace Coddington and Steven Meisel, and ongoing relationships with Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Martha Stewart and more famous faces. From her ashram upbringing – to getting Madonna on her side – and, more recently, formulating the skin-improving complexion drops we can't get enough of, this episode is a lesson in beauty history not to be missed. The 90s brought a backlash to the lingering decadence of the 80s. This was the birth of grunge. As supermodels rose to prominence, so did this counterculture, which emphasized anti-fashion and rejection of superficiality. But can anyone be exempt from fashion? Episode 2: Grunge Strikes Back features guest interviews with Marc Jacobs, Kim Gordon, Anna Sui, Cathy Horyn, Grace Coddington, Camilla Nickerson, Tonne Goodman, Kimberly Jenkins, and Megan Jasper. From Vogue's editorial team: Mark Holgate, Laird Borrelli-Persson, and Nicole Phelps. See Marc Jacobs 1993 Spring/Summer collection for Perry Ellis here. Hope and Jackie watch the 2009 documentary The September Issue, which features Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, and the whole Vogue #family as they work on the biggest issue of the year. Instead of watching for funzies, they watch through the lens of Michel Foucault's theory of Panopticism, thinking about the power that Vogue has over our ideas of norms. Enjoy!
These days, legendary fashion editor Grace Coddington tends to wear black—her way of remaining a “blank slate” at the fashion shoots she runs. But it wasn’t long ago that she herself was the vessel for the clothes. Born in the north of Wales in 1941, Coddington began modeling in London at age 18 and landed on the cover of British Vogue in 1962. Following a serious car crash that left one eyelid damaged, she was offered the position of junior fashion editor at British Vogue in 1968. After she rose up the ranks of the fashion world, Calvin Klein hired her as his design director in New York in 1987. But Coddington missed magazines. So she phoned her former colleague, Anna Wintour, then the new editor-in-chief of U.S. Vogue, who promptly appointed her its creative director. Over the next 30 years, Coddington would go on to help shape it into the most powerful fashion publication in the world before leaving in January 2016 to pursue her own projects. But despite her air-tight confident image, Grace Coddington is still the shy girl who, “rigid with nerves,” failed all her exams in high school. She talks to Alec Baldwin about the current state of fashion in America, the up and coming model she’s most excited to watch, and why dressing men makes her nervous.
John Wilson talks to ballet star Tamara Rojo and choreographer Akram Khan, as their radical new version of Giselle for English National Ballet opens in Manchester. Grace Coddington, the former creative director of American Vogue, on her five decades at the top of the fashion world. Krissah Thompson of The Washington Post reviews the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. 950 years after William the Conqueror arrived on our shores, historian Tom Holland assesses the cultural impact of the Norman invasion. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Timothy Prosser.
