Melitta Baumeister and Henry Zankov, the 2023 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner and runner-up, are two trailblazing designers working at the intersection of quality and artistry, exploring the tension between fantasy and commercial viability one thoughtful design at a time. Baumeister, a celebrated designer known for her sustainable and ethical approach, launched her eponymous brand in 2011. Her innovative designs merge modern aesthetics with a commitment to environmental consciousness, setting a high standard for sustainable fashion. Henry Zankov, who debuted his label in 2019, combines avant-garde design with exceptional craftsmanship. His background—from his Russian roots to his American influences—shapes his unique, trend-defying vision. Both designers present a singular take on the importance of intention, curiosity, and sculpture—and how to run a label as a business. For Zankov, fashion's ability to express intention is what's contemporary now, while Baumeister sees “being concerned about the future” as the zeitgeist. Episode Highlights: Born into a family of tailors in Germany, Baumeister studied tailoring and fashion from an early age.  Zankov was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and arrived in the US at the age of nine. Growing very close to New York City in the '90s, his first interactions with English and the West were mediated through MTV. Launching his own label in 2019, Zankov was interested in creating a recognizable visual language unique to his perspective after working as a consultant for years. To Baumeister, production difficulties are “finding the right people to work with; being so many positions in one, from the production manager to the pattern maker to handling sales; understanding even how wholesale and fashion is working.” Zankov speaks about the need to “reset” how we consume, living slower and more intentionally curated lifestyles. Regarding the tension between fantasy and commercial viability, Baumeister says her solution—at the intersection of artistry and sales—is “all in the fabric.” Zankov starts with a concept every season, aiming toward a curious customer with inner soulfulness and wisdom. Both designers cite the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund as an incredible support for their creative practice. Baumeister notes that wholesale gives more reach and territory, while direct-to-customer sales offer more constructive feedback and relationship-building opportunities. Zankov highlights the importance of using both, though DTC allows him to make more accessible garments. Zankov sees fashion's ability to express intention as what's contemporary now, while Baumeister sees “being concerned about the future” as the zeitgeist. Learn more about your ad choices. Carly Cushnie is a designer in every sense of the word, perhaps best known for her mold-breaking womenswear line, Cushnie (formerly Cushnie et Ochs). She was born and raised in London, and studied at the Parsons School of Design, where she met her future co-founder, Michelle Ochs. After graduating, they launched their label, Cushnie et Ochs, and immediately received attention for their sleek yet flirty designs. In 2011, they were finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, and in 2012, were nominees for the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear. Carly continued to design collections and ultimately rebranded as Cushnie when she went solo in 2018. After struggling to stay afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic, Carly was forced to close Cushnie, which—although was heartbreaking—gave her a moment to think about her next steps. In the years since, she's pursued different creative projects; including nurturing her longtime love for interiors and architecture by beginning to work as an interior designer. Simply put? Today's guest, Aurora James, is a force. I have no idea what hidden stash of hours she has to do all that she does in a day, a week, a month, a year—but she is changing the world. One of my favorite books of 2023 was her memoir, Wildflower, and I'm not alone—it was praised globally for its vulnerability and candidness. Aurora contains multitudes: in addition to being an author, she is the founder and designer behind Brother Vellies, a Black-owned and female-led lifestyle and accessories brand that is, in its own words, redefining luxury. Beyoncé, Solange Knowles, Elaine Welteroth, and Nicki Minaj have worn her items, and in 2015 Aurora made history as the first Black designer to win the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize; in 2020, she was on the cover of the September issue of Vogue. Also in 2020, after the senseless murder of George Floyd, Aurora founded the 15 Percent Pledge, a nonprofit that urges major retailers to commit 15 percent of shelf space to Black-owned businesses. Within two weeks of Aurora announcing the pledge on May 29, 2020, Sephora signed the pledge; companies like Macy's, Rent the Runway, Yelp, and West Elm have followed. This is an impressive person who has left her mark in so many spaces, and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this conversation.   Wildflower by Aurora James

As New York Fashion Week rolls around again, it's the perfect time to listen to this interview with Hillary Taymour, founder of the much-talked-about NYC label Collina Strada. Collina Strada is produced locally in small runs, using mostly deadstock. They've been working with the Real Real to upcycle unsold items, and with Liz Ricketts at the Or Foundation to upcycle and divert T-shirt waste in America before it heads offshore, and ends up in places like Kantamanto Market in Ghana.Known for shaking up the sustainability conversation stateside, this CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund finalist is also often heralded for its work around diversity and inclusion, and championing representation in their shows, but Hillary has no time for that. She says, they simply cast their community; their friends and artists they admire. Whether that's the label's co-designer Charlie's septuagenarian mum; the model Aaron Philip (self- described “a black woman in a wheel chair who happens to be trans”); or a musician like Dorian Electra - it's not that Collina is doing something radical. Rather, that the conventional fashion system is super out of touch. This is a candid conversation about going your own way, finding joy on creativity, and the frustrations of trying to be a sustainable fashion designer inside an unsustainable system.*Note: We've been saving this one up - this conversation one was recorded before the break after Series 7.Also before Alessandro Michele's departure from Gucci was announced.Enjoying the podcast? From an article by Max Berlinger in Vogue Runway:"Some designers create for fantasy, some designers create for reality, and then there's Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport, who doesn't bother differentiating between the two. In fact, that blurring of the lines is a hallmark of his brand, which draws deeply on the Chicano American experience and then filters it through Uribe's viewpoint as a queer man. This season, the designer showed in Los Angeles, the city where he was raised and has returned to during the pandemic. He had originally planned to show here in March of 2020, but the coronavirus upended that. So the mood atop the Petersen Automotive Museum, where his runway show was staged just as the sun dipped below the Pacific, was ebullient. Hoots and whistles rose up as the lights went down, and the clapping began before the first model even hit the catwalk. The clothes matched the vibe.“The main arc is about Chicano culture,” Uribe said. “But there's so many subcultures under that umbrella.” So he pulled together the looks of various groups: the swaggering machismo of the lowriders; the ornate street look of the cholos and cholas; the zoot-suit-wearing pachucos and their elegant pachuca wives, who flourished in L.A. during the 1950s; and the whitewashed, exoticized version of the bombshell Latina that was offered up by Old Hollywood. Sprinkle on top of those elements a heavy dose of the drag and vogueing scenes, and you get a sense of Uribe's vision...."Check out Gypsy Sport at Vogue Runway: https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/designer/gypsy-sportAnd in LA Fashion Week:https://lafw.net/portfolio-item/gypsy-sport/Gypsy Sport's page:  http://gypsysportny.comPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2022Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

The fund paved the way for influential designers like Rodarte, Jason Wu, and later Christopher John Rogers. Join us as we celebrate their paths to success and to dressing former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. Episode featuring: Kate and Laura Mulleavy (Rodarte), Jason Wu, Christopher John Rogers, Sally Singer, Meredith Koop and Vogue's editorial team Anna Wintour, Mark Holgate, Nicole Phelps, and Virginia Smith. In honor of NYFW in full swing, we're bringing back one of our most beloved episodes with the one and only Christopher John Rogers. This episode was recorded in September 2019.    If you Google the name Christopher John Rogers, a slew of articles will come up with all the same title: "Meet Christopher John Rogers, Fashion's Next Big Thing." At just 25-years-old, Christopher is one of the youngest break-out designers on the fashion scene. Although he made his Fashion Week debut just a month ago, Christopher has garnered industry-wide acclaim through his unapologetically joyful and colorful designs. His collection was met with a standing ovation and rave reviews from Vogue, WWD, and more. He was a 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, and his clothes have been worn by Michelle Obama, Rihanna, SZA, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Cardi B. In this episode, Christopher and I talk about creating glamour in a not-so-glamorous world, representation in the fashion industry, and how a Baton Rogue-born designer plans to make it big in the Big Apple. Story + Rain Talks

When Opposites Attract. Fine jewelry designer and fine artist Eva Zuckerman’s aesthetic is grounded in black with neutrals, but she grew up in a colorful life. She was born and raised in New York’s West Village and in Switzerland where her mother is from. And when it came to her schooling, it was a mix of uptown (The Dalton School) and downtown (Cooper Union). And then of course there’s the entrepreneurial and artful influence of her father and grandfather, who quite literally invented what is known as the temporary tattoo. Eva loves the juxtaposition of tough meets tender, and you can see this in her Eva Fehren Fine Jewelry Collection, and in all of her work as an artist. The way she uses materials and her feminine yet sleek design aesthetic has paved the way for others. For Eva, industrial, architectural, and geometric elements give way to sharp edges, clean lines, and delicate details. On this podcast we discuss the day when jewelry came into the picture for the fine-arts trained creative. We discuss how her painting, home decor, furniture, and jewelry design combine to fulfill her creatively. We talk about her famous and highly coveted X ring coming onto the scene, and the copycats that followed. We discuss her custom work and making one-of-a-kind pieces, and her engagement collection. We asked her all about taking part in the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund. We got into how she gets her best ideas of course and where she puts them down. We discuss her connection to drawing and how she’s creative in ways outside of her work. We talk about what she’s learned going on ten years of her business and creating a brand that’s distinct. One in a rare few of entirely original creators and inventors of style, Story + Rain Founder + EIC Tamara has known Eva since the day her collection officially launched to the press, so she took a minute to catch up with her about her style-go to’s and favorites now that she’s a new mother, some of which you can discover and shop here: 1. When Christopher John Rogers was in fifth grade, he knew he wanted to be a fashion designer. He later stumbled on an Alexander McQueen show on YouTube and has since been hooked. Roger’s love of unadulterated and saturated Fashion with a capital F, has seen him rise quickly with his eponymous label, garnering a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2019 and an incredible cohort of CJR wearers such as Lady Gaga, Michelle Obama, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Beyonce. Iridescent fabrics, saturated jewel tones and dramatic volumes that physically take up the space of a room have marked Rogers out in the New York fashion scene. Jillian Choi, director of global exhibitions at Design Miami and hardcore fashion enthusiast, speaks to Rogers on this episode of the Live Curiously podcast, delving into his journey - from his upbringing in Baton Rouge, where prim church goers and an anything-goes eclecticism have become part of his ongoing reference points, to his time in New York designing for DVF, whilst side hustling with his own brand. Choi and Rogers also unpack an unprecedented year, in which the young designer has had the luxury of time to be with his thoughts and really think about what his brand really stands for, realising that it’s ok not to be “everything to everyone.” Rogers’ hopes for fashion’s future? No grand plans for now, but just pure gratitude for doing him. “To be able to make clothing that is specific and charged with emotion be able to have a business out of that. I feel lucky that we’ve found a community that understands that and relate to that and allow us to continue what we’re doing.”

Steven Kolb and I have traveled in the same circles for years. But until this podcast, we never really had the chance to have a deep dive discussion about life in general and more specifically, life in fashion. As the CEO of the CFDA, Steven is basically the ringmaster of New York Fashion Week, so it is a bit difficult to pin him down. But what I have always appreciated about him is how level headed he is. Even in the eye of the fashion tornado, you can count on Steven to be matter-of-fact with his insights, feedback, and suggestions. Over the years, he has been a driving force behind some of the CFDA’s more important projects, from the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and the CFDA Fashion Incubator program to the CFDA Fashion Awards. Not to mention the many initiatives he, and by extension, the CFDA, have supported over the years that shine a light on issues such as better representation, equity, and inclusivity within the fashion industry. Just this year Steven launched RUNWAY360 in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic to create a digital platform for New York fashion designers to show content-rich online presentations of their collections when social distancing made in-person fashion weeks a non-starter. And at the same time, he flipped the script on this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund turning it into a fundraiser called A Common Thread to aid those fashion businesses that have been most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this podcast, Steven and I talk about where he sees fashion weeks headed in the future, how his outsider’s perspective has helped him be even more effective as the CEO of the CFDA, and what his favorite part of his job is. Also do listen all the way to the end of this podcast because Steven’s answers to my 5 generic fashion questions are just fantastic.

Industry interview with Gigi Burris Millinery on how hats can transform an outfit

The Style That Binds Us

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 4, 2018 38:24

We had the pleasure of interviewing Gigi Burris of Gigi Burris Millinery. She is based in Brooklyn, New York and her studio is on the Lower East Side. She was a 2009 graduate of Parsons School of Design where she was nominated to be the Designer of the Year. She studied RTW there. She was a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund finalist from 2014. Her hats have been worn by Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Haley Baldwin, Taylor Swift and many more!  Gigi grew up in Florida and didn't always dream of being a milliner. She loved art and working with her hands. Growing up, she worked with the local museum. She studied art in high school. She went abroad to Parsons Paris and got to focus on craft & heritage. Whenever she sketched RTW, it always had a hat. They offered a millinery class and she begged her friend to take it too so they wouldn't cancel the class.  A milliner is someone who makes hats / a hat-maker. She has entrepreneurs in her family, but she never dreamed of starting her own company. Even though she was top 10 of her class, it was hard for her to find a job once she graduated from college since there aren't enough jobs for the influx of students each year. She worked part-time as a freelancer with stylists. She also worked with Dennis Basso where she worked with exotic skins and fur. If you're going to use fur, make sure the animals come from a farm that you know they are treated with the best care possible. The Parsons program is quite intense - similar to law school, MIT or a doctorate. You're expected to pull all-nighters, travel, come in on the weekends, etc, so it really prepares you for the working world. It prepares you for the work-life balance of work taking up most of your time. To work in fashion, you need to know that the time commitment and the financial return might not be in alignment.  How do you make a hat? By hand, which is a technique that is centuries old. It starts with a carved wooden block. A hat has two pieces, a crown (the top part) and a brim. The shape of the hat begins in wood. They work with vintage blocks from the 1890s-1980s. They work with a skilled craftsman who can carve their own blocks. Once they carve the shape, you choose a brim. You place the material over the wood and you mold it with steam. The moisture allows for the material to form around the wood. Then it is baked in an oven. The process is all done with fire - a fire oven that stays on all day long. If it has a welt (a seam around the edge), you'd put a wire in it. You need to put a sweatband inside the hat that can serve as a buffer for your skin. How many hats are in a collection? She designs with a merchandising background when she designs. When you see her collection in the store or a website, it should look cohesive and transportive. In terms of SKUs, it varies. The Style That Binds Us
How to start a jewelry brand without going to school for it with MATEO New York

The Style That Binds Us

Matthew "Mateo" Harris has a fine jewelry brand named, Mateo New York. Mateo was a 2017 CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund finalist. He also has handbags and candles, making Mateo New York a lifestyle brand. He is from Jamaica and later moved to NYC. First, he thought he wanted to go into Hospitality and Hotel Management. The book Think & Grow Rich changed his life and this is how the brand Mateo New York came about. He was sketching non-stop and trying to find his voice as a designer. He sat at the bench with some jewelry designers and that is how he learned to make jewelry. He saw how they were sauntering the metal and how they were polishing or setting a stone. He also attended "YouTube University" and learned a lot by watching YouTube videos. He believes that if you want something, put your mind to it and do the work, you can do anything.    He launched with Men's jewelry and was making pieces that he wanted himself - clean and classic. The first collection was very industrial like the contents in a man's toolbox. A screw fell out of the wall when he was moving and he decided to make it into a necklace. Rhianna wore a piece (the zipper necklace) and everyone wanted a full collection. He has grown a lot from when he first started. He knows about different gemstones and pearls, how to tell if they are real etc. Being Jamaican, he is naturally drawn to the colors of the flag - black, green & yellow. He loves Black Onyx, Emeralds and Yellow Gold. Keeping the pieces at the right scale enables him to ensure he achieves the sweet spot price point that is attainable. Mateo's Soho boutique, along with data from his ecommerce site helped him learn who his customer is.    The first time he wanted to join the CFDA, Steven Kolb told him that he wasn't ready. He closed the Men's business and started making Women's Fine Jewelry in 2014. He always wanted to design Women's Jewelry and the first collection was based on simplicity and minimalism. He wanted it to be simple, clean, wearable and affordable. He was a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist in 2017. There is a lot of pressure, stress and excitement felt during the program. There was an Instagram challenge, a design challenge and many more. They had to do a fashion week presentation, which was his first presentation during NYFW. They got to go to Anna Wintour's house. His favorite experience during the CFDA Fashion Fund was shooting with Karlie Kloss. He learned a lot about himself and the tenacity he has, how to present your business in the right light and how to work with other designers.    Mateo New York handbags are made in Portugal. The handbag collection has been 3 years in the making. He worked with Firmenich on the candles and perfume. Mateo is precise & informed in the scents he wants for the brand. He wants to create a lifestyle brand, so all of the classifications (handbags, jewelry, etc) go together. Since relaunching the brand, his favorite moment was getting featured in American Vogue.    To design a jewelry collection, you start with a sketch, which is sent to his team and they do a digital cad. For jewelry, some pieces they use a cad or a cast. Most everything is handmade, so they use a wire. It goes from a sketch to either being hand done or cast, polished and set with stones.    For handbags, he starts with a sketch and then sends it to the pattern maker, they assemble the first model, he approves it and it goes into final production.    His inspiration comes from modern art, particularly Alexander Calder. Mateo wants to create handbags that are desirable and that women will crave. They have classic shapes that'll never go away. All of the bags have female names because at this point, he has so many women in his life.    Putti --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/delia-folk8/support

When you meet Aurora James, CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund-winning designer of Brother Vellies -- a footwear-centric accessories label that works with artisans in Africa -- her shoes make a lot of sense. They are unique. Bold. Many are like nothing you've seen before, and all communicate a strong point of view. That's absolutely how I'd describe the designer. Her personal style is reflective of her inherent taste, as well as the colorful and sometimes complicated layering of cultures she's been introduced to over the course of her life. So is her character, strong sense of self-worth and steady view of the world. Want to know more? So did Jay Buim, host of Oh Boy. Headphones in, and enjoy. In the latest installment of the Vogue podcast, Gypsy Sport’s Rio Uribe offers up a lesson in making one’s dreams a reality—a skill the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund alum says he has been honing since childhood. “My family was very resourceful and all of our Halloween costumes were very makeshift,” Uribe tells Vogue’s Mark Holgate with a laugh. “Growing up, I was taught to be . . . a make-things-happen type of guy.” As Uribe explains, the first lesson in finding success outside of the classroom starts with believing in yourself. “I did not go to school and I did not get all of the internships, but I did always have the passion and desire to be in the fashion industry, and more importantly, to be a creator.” Here, on the heels of the designer’s Spring 2017 ready-to-wear show, tune in to get the full story you won’t find anywhere else, not even on the runway. How does one become Joseph Altuzarra? In the latest episode of the Vogue podcast, the French-born designer tells Vogue Fashion News Director, Mark Holgate the formula was as simple as alphabetical order. “When I graduated, I sent my résumé to Marc Jacobs,” Altuzarra says of what would become his first big break in the fashion industry. “An intern, I guess, had been asked to alphabetize the résumés and so mine was on the top of the pile so I was the first one they called and I was available so they just stopped there.” While Altuzarra goes on to detail the great many design lessons he learned as an intern for Jacobs, the 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner also recalls a valuable piece of advice Holgate gave him early on in his career trajectory. “You said, ‘It’s good to make mistakes. You shouldn’t be afraid to do something,’ and, actually, Anna [Wintour] sort of reiterated that the last time I saw her: ‘It’s okay if it’s not always perfect and it’s okay if you have an idea that sort of falls flat.
