At a Senate Intelligence Hearing on Worldwide Threats in February 2018, FBI Director Christopher Wray warned of other countries “exploiting the very open research and development environment” in the United States and counterintelligence risks from “nontraditional collectors, especially in the academic setting, whether it’s professors, scientists, students.” The United States is reevaluating its posture on foreign research collaboration. Various U.S. government agencies have increased scrutiny of researchers from sensitive countries while recent legislative proposals would restrict foreign students’ access to certain research projects.   Policymakers have to evaluate the tensions between national security and an open and welcoming investment and innovation environment, as well as the degree to which such efforts should be coordinated with allies and partners. Notably, officials will have to decide whether to expand limits on research collaboration, while ensuring the United States remains the premier destination for top global talent.   Please join the CSIS Simon Chair in Political Economy at 2:00pm on Tuesday, June 4, for keynote remarks by Norman R. Augustine, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lockheed Martin, former Undersecretary of the Army, and current member of advisory boards to the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Energy, followed by an expert panel discussion on balancing national security concerns with research competitiveness. This event is made possible through the generous support of member governments of the CSIS Allied Economic Forum.

In a world that plagued by incidents of violent extremism and terror, we are often presented with messages or news stories that focus on the leaders of extremist organizations or the perpetrators of such attacks. This type of messaging can be a distraction from more fully addressing the root cause of violent extremism through the use of human sciences such as psychology, sociology and anthropology. In the second installment of our series on violent extremism, Valka-Mir Human Security Managing Partner Dr. Aleksandra Nesic explains why she believes social science concepts and approaches are needed when attempting to understand and address the root causes of extremist and violent extremist ideologies. Our university departments are becoming increasingly interdisciplinary where people from different backgrounds come together to keep each other in check while tackling large issues that have a lot at stake. One place this is happening is in synthetic biology, where computer scientists, engineers, biologists, ethicists, sociologists and artists “hold hands” in the lab as they develop new approaches to genetic engineering. Dr. Hilary Rose gets real on the promise of interdisciplinarity, and explains her concerns about what she thinks might be the dulling of criticality through such endeavours. Somehow, amazingly, she also manages to touch on feminism, the radical science movement, and Occupy! // Dr. Hilary Rose is a prominent British feminist of sociology of science and social policy. Currently she is Visiting Research Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics, Professor Emeritus of Social Policy at the University of Bradford and Professor Emeritus of Physick, Gresham College, London. In 1997 she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Uppsala for her contribution to the feminist sociology of science and in 2001 her book Love Power and Knowledge: Towards a feminist transformation of the sciences was listed one of the “101 Best Books of the 20th Century” (Mulheres Seculo XX 101 Livros) published by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture.
