Tonight on America at Night with McGraw Milhaven: Chris Johnson, GOP strategist and President of the American Energy Leadership Institute, joins the show to discuss Trump's reindustrialization agenda and why efforts to bring manufacturing and industry back to the United States may face resistance from the very Americans they aim to benefit. Johnson examines the political, economic, and workforce challenges involved in reshaping the nation's industrial future. David Clement, Policy Director for the Consumer Choice Center, discusses the issue dominating kitchen table conversations across America: the cost of living. Clement breaks down how tariffs are impacting consumers, what voters are likely to focus on heading into the midterms, and whether a new Iran deal could help ease economic pressures or create additional challenges. Later, Jessica Goldstein joins the program to discuss her latest work and the growing popularity of retro-inspired fiction, exploring why stories set in earlier eras continue to resonate with modern readers. Plus, Bill Clevlen, founder of BillOnTheRoad.com, returns for the weekly travel segment, sharing destination ideas, travel tips, and unique places worth adding to your next road trip itinerary. Should Members of Parliament be forced to face voters again if they cross the floor? In this episode of The LeDrew Three Minute Interview, Stephen speaks with Jay Goldberg of the Consumer Choice Center about political accountability, recall elections, and the growing frustration many Canadians feel toward MPs who switch parties after being elected. The discussion comes amid renewed debate over floor crossings in Canadian politics, with some voters arguing that changing parties after an election amounts to betraying the mandate voters originally supported.Goldberg points to systems already in place in provinces like Alberta and British Columbia, where citizens can petition to trigger recall votes or by-elections. He argues Canadians should have similar powers federally — especially when MPs switch political allegiance midterm. The conversation explores:Whether MPs should automatically face by-elections after crossing the floorThe growing role of party leaders and “presidential-style” politics in CanadaWhy many voters feel disconnected from OttawaPolitical accountability and democratic reformThe difference between representing a party versus representing constituentsAnd why recall powers are gaining attention across CanadaAs public trust in politics continues to decline, this interview asks whether Canada's democratic system needs stronger mechanisms to hold politicians accountable between elections. Is Canada's proposed Sovereign Wealth Fund a smart investment strategy — or a political slush fund waiting to happen? In this episode of The LeDrew Three Minute Interview, Stephen speaks with Jay Goldberg of the Consumer Choice Center about Prime Minister Mark Carney's proposed sovereign investment fund and the growing concerns surrounding government-controlled investing.Goldberg argues the plan differs fundamentally from successful sovereign wealth funds like Norway's because Canada would be borrowing money to create it — not investing surplus revenue. He also raises questions about political interference, noting that Carney has already suggested where investments should go, despite claims the fund would operate at arm's length. The conversation explores:Why borrowing to create a sovereign wealth fund is controversialComparisons between Canada's proposal and Norway's fundThe risks of governments “picking winners and losers”Ottawa's history with investment agencies and infrastructure banksCanada's growing brain drain and business flightHigh taxes, regulation, and economic competitivenessWhy critics believe Canada should focus on lowering barriers for business insteadAs economic uncertainty grows and investment leaves Canada, this interview asks whether Ottawa should be directing the economy — or getting out of the way. Matt speaks with James Czerniawski about proposed bans on children using social media and AI, exploring concerns around mental health, digital literacy, free speech, privacy, and the consequences of regulation. James argues that while online harms are real, outright bans are ineffective and often counterproductive, advocating instead for parental awareness, digital literacy, and a more optimistic approach to AI. Jerry opens the show by talking about floor crossers amid today's federal by-election. Jerry then speaks with Jay Goldberg, Canadian Affairs Manager at the Consumer Choice Center, about his latest column arguing that Canada should be listening to United States' trade grievances because it could affect Canadian industries. Next, Jerry turns to today’s federal by‑election, speaking with Graham Richardson, CTV Ottawa Bureau Chief. Do you have a decompression ritual before or after work?
Paper straws are here to stay, following the government's decision that allows Ottawa's plastics ban to stand. David Clement, North American Affairs Manager with the Consumer Choice Center, has been critical of the ban and says "the war on plastic" has gotten out of hand. He joins the show to share his thoughts on the court's decision and what alternatives could be looked at. Canada's Prime Minister's recent Davos speech has been widely praised; however, while well-crafted, it prioritized political messaging over practical trade strategy, potentially putting the country's relationship with its largest export market, the U.S., at risk. Joining us now to share his perspective is former Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall.
Alex interviews Sabine Benoit of the Consumer Choice Center on Canada's housing crisis. Sabine argues the main causes are chronic undersupply plus policy barriers: zoning that blocks “missing middle” density, long approval timelines/red tape, and high development fees that get passed to buyers. They also cover why immigration is often scapegoated despite being only part of the story, and why governments should focus on enabling private building (and targeted skilled-trades immigration) rather than new government developer programs. Stephen LeDrew sits down with Jay Goldberg, Canadian Affairs Manager with the Consumer Choice Center and frequent Three Minute Interview guest, for a hard look at the fallout from Mark Carney's first federal budget — and whether Canada is any closer to getting back on track.Goldberg says the rhetoric of renewal doesn't match the reality: there's no movement on the Ring of Fire, no progress on pipelines, and no sign that Canada's major projects are advancing beyond the study stage. Despite talk of rebuilding, the deficit has doubled, industries are still leaving, and confidence in Ottawa's economic leadership continues to erode.LeDrew presses Goldberg on whether Canada needs an election to force real change, or if Carney has already lost his chance to prove himself. The two debate what's holding the government back — from old Trudeau-era ministers to entrenched Liberal habits — and what real leadership would look like.A focused, fast-paced Three Minutes on politics, budgets, and the cost of going nowhere. Stephen LeDrew sits down with Jay Goldberg, Canadian Affairs Manager with the Consumer Choice Center, to unpack what this year's federal budget really means for Canada's economy - and why it fails to spark real growth.Goldberg argues the government's rhetoric may sound bold, but its policies aren't. Instead of empowering the private sector, Ottawa keeps expanding bureaucracy, delaying projects, and chasing “studies” instead of shovels. From stalled pipelines to the still-idle Ring of Fire, he says Canada's economic engine is stuck in neutral - and investors know it.LeDrew and Goldberg break down why Canadians are moving their money south, how tax policy and red tape are strangling innovation, and what real action would look like.A tough, focused Three Minutes on the gap between political promises and economic reality. Episode Overview: In this episode, Tracy speaks with Bill Wirtz, Senior Policy Analyst at the Consumer Choice Center, to unpack the current state of European agricultural policies, the rise and recent decline of the "green agenda," and its impact on agriculture, trade, and food systems. We explore Europe's experience and discuss how similar trends may start to impact North America. Key Topics Covered: European Agricultural Policy Landscape European Farmers Pushing Back Against Policies Why Europe Is Ahead of North America on Green Policies The United States' Agricultural Policy under the Trump Administration gricultural Policy in Canada and Recent Resignation of Prime Minister The Impact of Green Policies on Food Choices Advice for North American Farmers Watching European Trends What to Watch for in the Coming Years Tune in to this episode for a deep dive into Europe's green agricultural policies, the growing backlash from farmers, and what North American farmers and consumers need to know as these trends begin to cross the Atlantic. Detailed Show Notes: European Agricultural Policy Landscape: Tracy asks Bill to give our audience an overview on European agricultural policy, starting with the Paris Accord, while tracing its roots back to the Kyoto Protocol. With so many terms floating around—Green Agenda, Green New Deal, Agenda 2030, Farm to Fork, and more—Tracy asks Bill to break them down and help connect the dots, offering a clearer picture of the environmental movement and its origins, which are shaping Europe's agricultural policies with a focus on sustainability and climate goals. European Farmers Pushing Back Against Policies: Bill talks about the increasing backlash from European farmers against restrictive policies, including product bans, land set-aside programs, Dutch farm buybacks, fuel and farm insurance hikes, and the latest farm inheritance tax. These policies have sparked widespread protests across the continent, and while farm protests have always been common in Europe, they have become increasingly more prevalent in recent years. Why Europe Is Ahead of North America on Green Policies: Bill explores why Europe is implementing green agricultural policies faster than North America and whether similar policies will emerge in the U.S. and Canada. The United States' Agricultural Policy under the Trump Administration: Bill provides insights into how Trump's agricultural policies may affect U.S. farmers, particularly regarding regulation, trade, and environmental standards. He also discusses the growing concerns around the Trump administration's agricultural policies, particularly regarding regulatory shifts and the potential impact on U.S. farming practices. He also touches on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s push to ban agricultural chemicals and anything he deems unhealthy. RFK Jr.'s position has sparked debate, as his proposals could significantly alter farming practices by restricting the use of pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals, raising questions about their long-term impact on food production and farmer livelihoods. Agricultural Policy in Canada: Tracy and Bill discuss Canada's agricultural policies, including the government's receptiveness to pro-trade and innovation arguments, the resignation of Prime Minister Trudeau, and the recent withdrawal of six national crop organizations from Canada's sustainable agriculture strategy. The Impact of Green Policies on Food Choices: Bill highlights how Europe's green policies affect consumer food choices, comparing the differences in food systems, prices, and availability between Europe and North America. Advice for North American Farmers Watching European Trends: Bill shares key advice for North American farmers on how to avoid the regulatory pitfalls seen in European agriculture. What to Watch for in the Coming Years: Bill offers insights on the future of agriculture and green policies, identifying key developments North American farmers should be watching in the next few years. Canadians are turning on the immigration system, with recent polling showing Canadians think immigration rates are too high. This is Justin Trudeau's fault, True North's Andrew Lawton says. By setting arbitrary targets and making virtue signalling the goal over a sensible, measured approach to immigration, Trudeau has let the system get out of control. Can it be fixed? Also, the federal government has given the health minister, right now Mark Holland, the right to override Health Canada and unilaterally ban some products based on harm concerns – with no need for study or legislation. David Clement of the Consumer Choice Center says Canadians should be concerned about this consolidation of power in one person's hands. He joins the show to explain why. Plus, leaders around the world are condemning the sham election in Venezuela that Nicolas Maduro claims re-elected him. Ana Rizo of the Ladies of Liberty Alliance joins to discuss what's happening and why it matters. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre spoke to a crowd of thousands at the Calgary Stampede over the weekend, defending firearms owners and railing against censorship and what he called Justin Trudeau's "woke ideology." True North's Andrew Lawton says it's important to note how Poilievre is doing the opposite of what the media elites and political pundits have said for years conservative politicians need to do – and his poll numbers show him doing better than his predecessors. Also, Canada's ambassador for climate change has amassed $254,000 in travel expenses in less than two years. Saving the planet doesn't come cheap, does it? Kris Sims from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation weighs in. The latest example is the Kids Online Safety Act, a transparent attempt to smuggle widespread censorship past the people under the guise of keeping children safe. Matt Kibbe talks to Yaël Ossowski, deputy director at the Consumer Choice Center, about the importance of free speech and privacy online and the dangers bills such as this one create to a free and open internet.
In this week's episode, tracy speaks to Senior Policy Analyst Bill Wirtz about the European Farmer Protests. Across Europe, farmers have rallied against changes in government policies and aggressive government environmental goals that are affecting business practices, harming food production, and seeing farmers in some countries having their farmers taken/bought out by the government. Tracy spoke to Bill Wirtz from the Consumer Choice Center to get the details of the European farmer protests. In this episode, Tracy and Bill speak about: The uprising of farmers across Europe and what has been happening since January 8th when the German farmers declared a week long protest. To provide the whole picture, Bill takes us back to October 2019 when the Dutch Farmers started protesting their government's aggressive environmental goals, which called for a reduction in nitrous oxide and the call for hundreds of farmers to sell their farms to the government to assist the Dutch government in meeting their environmental goals. Flash forward to January 8th of this year as we see the German farmers kick off a week of nationwide protests against "subsidy cuts" or the end of tax breaks, depending on how you view it. Bill shares more. Since January 8th, Europe has seen farmers from country after country rise and join German farmers. Tracy asks Bill why these additional countries joined. In Europe, there is a lot of talk about "the Green New Deal." Bill shares more about how European governments have ambitious environmental goals. He shares how these lofty ideas are impacting farmers. He shares essential information here for anyone watching the European protests. What about North America? There is a lot of talk in Canada and the United States about the environment, climate change, sustainability, ESG, and goals such as the 30% reduction in Nitrous Oxide. Are these stringent environmental policies headed for North America? What do farmers need to know? Last, Tracy asks Bill if he thinks farmers are right to take these actions. If you have been watching the European farm protests and are wondering what exactly is going on and why…this episode is for you. This was such a valuable episode. If you are a farmer anywhere in the World, please don't miss this episode. Thanks for tuning in, Tracy ................... FDA) concerning the FDA's approval (or lack thereof) of flavored cartridge e-cigarettes --the state of the flavored e-cigarette market, the facts of this case, the existing circuit split, and the potential ramifications of this decision moving forward. Bill Wirtz is senior policy analyst at the Consumer Choice Center, where he focuses on agriculture and trade. In defense of the EPA's independence.
Why is the Biden administration now recommending that Americans drink no more than two beers a week? Blame Canada! Canadian public health policies, crafted by neo-prohibitionist advocacy groups, are trickling down into the United States and making their way into public policy, flying in the face of the medical literature on moderate alcohol consumption. They are also stunningly hypocritical coming from a government that knowingly drove up the rates of alcoholism and substance abuse by locking people in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, closing gyms, parks, and churches while leaving liquor stores open. Matt Kibbe talks to David Clement from the Consumer Choice Center about where these guidelines come from and why they are such a bad idea, both from the perspective of sound medical advice and good old-fashioned American freedom.
