Since the launch of VMware Horizon 8 in 2020, we have released several updates, including two extended service branch (ESB) releases with Horizon 8 2111 and Horizon 8 2212.  With general support ending for Horizon 7 on April 30, 2023, now is the time to upgrade to Horizon 8. Just a few weeks ago at VMware Explore, I presented a session called “What's New in Anywhere Workspace.” In that session, I showcased many new innovations in our VMware Horizon solution, including enhancements to our VMware Blast protocol, next-generation hybrid cloud support, and improvements in scalability. Another key announcement was our collaboration with Amazon Web Services for Horizon on Amazon WorkSpaces. We're partnering to provide an optimized user experience for Amazon WorkSpaces end users across devices, locations, media, and network connections. Since the launch of our Horizon Subscription Upgrade Program in 2019, many VMware Horizon customers have upgraded to our Horizon Universal Subscription offering, taking advantage of several benefits including:Flexible multi-cloud deployment options – deploy and host Horizon anywhere and in multiple clouds at the same time, including on-premises, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and IBM Cloud. IT can continue to deploy virtual desktops and apps on-premises, leverage the speed and scalability of hyperscaler capacity, or use a combination of both to help their employees quickly get secure access to corporate resources. Simplified cross-pod and cross-cloud management – use the cloud-hosted, VMware-managed Horizon Control Plane, which includes multi-cloud SaaS services that allow IT to monitor and manage images, desktops, and apps across Horizon deployments, including both on-premises and in the cloud. From SecurityWeek.com:Microsoft has warned organizations of a new wave of brute force cyberattacks that target SQL servers and use a living-off-the-land binary. Specifically, the attackers rely on a legitimate utility called sqlps.exe to achieve fileless persistence on SQL servers that use weak or default passwords. From BleepingComputer.com:Phishing attacks are now using automated chatbots to guide visitors through the process of handing over their login credentials to the threat actors. How nice of them. Actually, the presence of a chatbot lends a sense of legitimacy to the malicious sites. See the full Trustwave report in the article. From ThreatPost.com:A critical privilege escalation flaw found in two WordPress site themes, can allow the threat actors to take over the sites completely. The Jupiter and JupiterX Core Plugin affect more than 90,000 sites. The vulnerability affects Jupiter Theme 6.10.1 or earlier, and JupiterX Core Plugin 2.0.7 or earlier. Updated versions have patched the flaws. From PortSwigger.net:A critical vulnerability in Flux2, the continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes, can enable rogue tenants in multi-tenancy deployments to sabotage their neighbors that are using the same off-premise infrastructure. The remote code execution flaw arises through improper validation of kubeconfig files, which “can define commands to be executed to generate on-demand authentication tokens”. In a single tenant deployment, this flaw is only a 6.8 severity. In multi tenant deployments, that rating jumps to a 9.9 And last this week, from ZDNet.comNewly registered domains that just appeared in April, mimic a legitimate Microsoft Windows 11 OS download portal. Rapyd, a Fintech-as-a-Service company, has closed a $300M Series E round led by Target Global. Rapyd intends to use the funds to undertake a number of strategic acquisitions to assist growth in important sectors. Rapyd is currently valued at $8.75B, according to reports.Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV), a VC firm based in Silicon Valley that was hit by a ransomware attack in July, has sent a letter to the Maine attorney's office. The attackers had obtained personal information from the company's private investors, or limited partners (LPs), in the assault.Marvell Technology Inc., an infrastructure semiconductor solutions provider, and Innovium Inc., a provider of networking solutions for cloud and edge data centers, announced that they had entered a definitive agreement. As per the agreement, Marvell will acquire Innovium in an all-stock deal amounting to $1.1 billion. Moderne Ventures, an early-stage venture financing firm, has announced the closing of a $200M second fund, which was oversubscribed. Moderne Ventures invests in businesses with sales of $2M to $10M and makes initial payments of $4M to $7M.VMware announces new updates to its VDI and DaaS platform, VMWare Horizon, enabling IT departments to easily manage it from anywhere, across the cloud and on-premise deployments. The new features are aimed at increasing management efficiency and improving employee productivity amid a high adoption of cloud-deployed VMware Horizon desktops.Presto Company Ahana has raised $20M in a Series A funding round to redefine open data lake analytics amid high growth and adoption of Presto. The last year has changed a lot about the end-user computing landscape. We transitioned from workplaces that were very well-known (mostly on-premises with a few established remote users) to a distributed workforce that inhabits a less well-defined workplace that could be, frankly, anywhere. Organizations that already made extensive use of a desktop virtualization solution and prioritized remote access were well-positioned to weather the storm, but others didn't fare so well for one reason or another. Even today, some are struggling to keep their legacy environments running.We routinely hear from customers that their existing environment, for whatever reason, isn't able to keep up with demand. Sometimes it's as simple as an aging infrastructure in need of replacement, but other times the situation is more complex. Many say their legacy platform hasn't kept up with the times with modern features of desktop virtualization technology or that support is hard to come by. Others have to deal with security issues that are amplified by increased demand for remote work.
