On Wednesday, Jan. 8 the University Library and the Academic Services building were evacuated due to a bomb threat. A university employee received the threat in a vague call and reported it. Once the police were on the scene, three canines swept the building and it was cleared of any dangers. The next day, the library was reopened for regular operations. Just before returning to campus on Thursday, Jan. 16 a piece of the Walter Pyramid's exterior ceiling collapsed and resulted in the Pyramid's temporary closure. Since then, all games scheduled to be played in the Pyramid have been held in the Goldmine gym. Games are expected to return to the Pyramid within the next couple of weeks. This semester will be Long Beach State President Jane Close Conoley's last year as she announced her retirement before the end of the fall semester. The Eaton fire in Altadena burned over 14,000 acres and the most recent Hughes fire has burned almost 10,000 acres. All of these fires combined have burned 50,683 acres, destroyed 16,188 structures and resulted in at least 28 deaths.  This past Monday, Jan. 20 Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. The 25th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. in the USU Ballrooms with more events to come. Last Thursday, Feb. 1, flooding caused by heavy rainfall forced closures to several roads on campus and employee parking lots E3 and E4. The storm also damaged multiple EV chargers on campus and flooded the Walter Pyramid, forcing the women's basketball game to be relocated to the Gold Mine. Major storms are expected to continue into this week. The University Police Department has planted decoy bikes around campus in an attempt to catch bike thieves. Each decoy bike has a location tracking feature that allows the police department to determine where stolen bikes are going. Bike theft is one of the most frequent crimes on campus and the decoy bikes are a renewed effort to reduce and prevent theft. The 2024 Campus Safety Plan provided by the University Police Department listed many upcoming improvements to campus safety such as upgraded fire alarm systems in the Parkside and Beachside dorms, upgraded lighting along Parkside housing pathways and renovations to the Parkside Service Center. This summer, construction will begin on a new student housing project called La Playa Hall to increase affordable student housing on campus. The new facility will add at least 424 beds and cost an estimated $115 million, according to the project's website. La Playa Hall will include a built-in mental health facility run by the Counseling and Psychological Services program on campus. Beach Building Services said the extension of the CAPS program has also been implemented in other housing locations. With construction starting in Summer 2024, the current expected completion date is set for Summer 2026. An ocean exploration company called Deep Sea Vision announced that it captured sonar images of what is thought to be the remnants of Amelia Earhart's lost plane at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Student Health Services has a couple of workshops planned for this week, starting with Birth Control 101 today, Monday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Student Health Services building. He shared information about the history of CFA strikes, new negotiated working conditions and when the agreement may be finalized. The Long Beach State dining hall management team conducted a study in October 2022 to observe the amount of food wasted by students in the campus dining halls. During the study, it was determined that about 15,000 pounds of food were wasted between the three dining facilities. When food waste was measured a year later in Oct. 2023, the overall waste had only gone down 30 pounds. As a result of the study, the Food Waste Reduction Campaign was formed with the goal of reducing waste by 20%. The Office of Sustainability has since worked with ASI and Sustain U to provide other sustainability workshops and events. The ICJ has ordered that Israel must abide by the Genocide Convention. In season 11, episode 14 of Beach Weekly, host Lei Madrigal discusses the recent workers strike on campus, a temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and more. University trade workers at Long Beach State held a one-day strike near the Walter Pyramid on Tuesday, Nov. 14 as the CSU system continues to stall negotiations with the workers. The group, called Teamsters, went on strike at 22 different campuses. The CSU Employees Union, along with four other unions, have reached their own tentative agreements with the CSU which were approved on Nov. 7. In fall of 2024, Long Beach State will introduce the “Equitable Textbook Access” program, which will provide students with access to all their required textbooks at a flat rate of $250 per semester for full-time students and $165 for part-time students. The “Equitable Textbook Access” fee can be covered by financial aid and makes all required textbooks available to students on Canvas. Students are automatically enrolled in the program but are able to opt out of it by the last day to add or drop classes without approval. The program is intended to make textbooks more accessible and to reduce the campus's carbon footprint by limiting printing and shipping. Eighteen speed camera systems will be installed in Long Beach sometime in 2024 in an effort to make roads safer by getting drivers to slow down. Once everything is set in place for the speed cameras to be installed, the public must be notified at least 30 days before they start operating. Additionally, during the first 60 days that the cameras are in operation, violators will get warnings without fines. Fines will range from $50 to $500 and revenue from citations will go toward traffic safety improvements within the city. On Friday, Nov. 17, Long Beach city officials announced that a major cybersecurity breach caused the city's main website to be shut down along with bill payment portals, call centers and other city-related services and websites. Officials have not yet disclosed whether or not the breach compromised residents' and employees' personal data. They have also not disclosed whether a ransom was requested as part of the attack. Long Beach city officials have directed residents to the city's social media accounts for updates on recovery. A mysterious respiratory illness in dogs is spreading through the United States, causing the animals to develop a cough, fever, loss of appetite and other symptoms. The cause of the illness is unclear. Some veterinarians believe it is being caused by a virus while others believe a bacteria is to blame. Israel and Hamas reached a truce through a temporary 4-day ceasefire agreement last Friday, marking the first break in the war since the start in October. During the break, Hamas is set to release 50 hostages who were captured on Oct. 7 and Israel is set to release 150 Palestinian hostages. As of Friday, Nov. 24, Hamas has freed 24 hostages and Israel has released 39 Palestinians. In season 11, episode 12 of Beach Weekly, host Lei Madrigal discusses a false campus police report, numerous shootings over Halloween weekend and more. Chief of Police John Brockie sent an email to students last Wednesday revealing that the reported robbery involving a female victim and male suspect on campus did not occur. The University Police Department said the conclusion was made as a result of the investigation done by detectives. The assault and robbery were reported to have happened the night of Sunday, Oct. 29 in the R2 parking lot at 7:30 p.m. According to the UPD, no charges will be sought against the person who made the false police report. As the winter sports season approaches, school officials are preparing for game relocations as roof leaks continue in the Walter Pyramid. In the past, leaks in the roof of the 30-year-old Walter Pyramid required that sporting events be relocated to the Gold Mine. A recent estimate for repairs to the Walter Pyramid said it would cost $55 million to fix, which is more than double the original building cost of $22 million. A temporary lake in Death Valley has formed after Hurricane Hilary dumped more than two inches of rain on the desert in a 24-hour time frame. According to park officials, the lake is currently two miles wide, four miles long and only a few inches deep. As water evaporates, the lake is slowly disappearing and could be gone by mid-November. Toyota announced last Wednesday, Nov. 1 that it is recalling nearly two million RAV4 SUV models from 2013 through 2018 for a potential fire hazard. It is reported that the car batteries can shift during forceful turns, which can lead to fires. The company says it is still preparing a solution to the problem, and RAV4 owners will be notified of a remedy by the end of December. A mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine on Oct. 25 left at least 18 people dead and 13 injured. The shooting occurred at two locations: a bowling alley and a bar. The shooter, Robert Card, was found dead by law enforcement from a self-inflicted gunshot wound two days after authorities initiated a search for him. On Nov. 3, President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden went to the scene of the deadly shooting to show support for the victims' families. Numerous mass shootings in America occurred over the Halloween weekend shortly after the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine. The weekend's mass shootings left at least 11 people dead and 76 injured. President Biden sent Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Israel for the fourth time last Friday, Nov. 3 to urge the country to mitigate civilian deaths during war in the Israel and Palestine territories. The U.S. has not called for a ceasefire but has called for a temporary "humanitarian pause" to allow more aid to enter Gaza and for hostages to be released. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the “humanitarian pause,” saying Israel's military forces will not stop until Hamas is defeated. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the changed business climate for mixed martial arts following the ratings success of last Saturday’s EliteXC show on CBS. In light of this, we covered the news conference Thursday in New York, where it was announced that the Affliction mixed martial arts promotion and real estate mogul Donald Trump had entered into a partnership, with Trump buying an equity stake in Affliction. The inaugural Affliction show takes place Saturday, July 19, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and will be shown in the U.S. on pay-per-view. We got a brief comment from Trump about why he chose to invest in Affliction, and spoke with Tom Atencio, vice president of Affliction, about the company's business plans, as well as their intention of creating unified MMA championships by working with the new sanctioning body, WAMMA. This Saturday night, June 7, WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) will defend his title against Sergio Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs) from "The Contender" series. This fight takes place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., and will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime.
