Although they are settling into their new hockey homes in different states, it's clear that this friendship has no borders as they are already talking about building a commune & retiring together (... maybe "too close" according to Kayla & maybe "never close enough" according to Aleah ;)) The foursome have some fun getting to know one another while discussing the current season's obstacles, shocking home decor choices, marathon musts & figuring out WHO can lick WHAAAAT??? NO SPOILERS in our conversation with Reese Witherspoon Book Club author Christie Tate discussing her refreshingly original debut memoir, Group: How One Therapist and a Circle of Strangers Saved My Life. We begin by talking about how Christie, having just been named the top student in her law school class, found herself in a deep depression with suicidal thoughts and turned to group therapy to change her life. ** We ask Christie whether you can be a person who has secrets and doesn’t want to burden others with your problems, but also be vulnerable and intimate in your relationships?  We loved hearing her explain how finding a witness and a way to place your burdens on another is a way of forming trust and intimacy. (04:48) ** Christie reminds us that the road to recovery is not linear and we need to make space for back steps, to see them as just another step along the path. (09:34) ** In group therapy, Christie’s goal is to find romantic love, to score her smooth, unattached heart. But can you be a complicated woman and still yearn for and need the love of a romantic partner? We doubt you’ll dub her a “bad feminist” after reading Group and listening to her response. (12:20) ** When women write memoir, critics call them “brave”... we ask Christie whether she thinks the term is condescending or whether it is just a fact that writing your pure truth for all the world is actually an act of courage? Her thoughtful response about how she has come full circle on this question and how context matters has us reeling. (19:29) ** Let’s play a game! Christie asks us to share which famous people we would each want in our own ideal group therapy session. We had so much fun with this exercise! Christie even made us our own personal Pop Fiction Women group made up of fictional characters! (24:10) ** Three over-achieving lawyers (Christie, Carinn and Kate) discuss the mask of perfectionism, aka we engage in group therapy. (35:32) ** Of course we discuss astrology, but this time Christie actually let Carinn run her birth chart. We knew she was a Cancer, but her chart was full of additional surprises! She is super fiery even among two fire signs! (37:24) ** Speaking of things destined in the stars, Carinn and Christie share what they recall about how they met and how their friendship has grown over the years. It all began with a blog post about motherhood and Chilean miners. Whaaaat? (41:00) ** We return to a favorite theme of fate vs free will and Christie shares how the vision for Group just popped into her head while trying to write fiction and how the universe intervened in helping her on her road to publication. (45:40) ** Christie shares what she is loving right now in books, TV, movies and music. (50:56) Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @popfictionwomen and on Twitter @pop_women. I know… But here’s the good news – Unlocking Your Nonprofit Potential isn’t going away; we’re just changing the way we’re doing things.  Over the past year that I’ve been recording these episodes and interacting with you on social media and reading your emails and because I am always doing research, thinking about this podcast and what’s the best way to help you – I’ve come to understand that the best way to serve you is with a blog that you can read and see what I’m teaching you. I’ll get to why a blog is the right way to serve you in a minute, but first I want to tell you a story… A couple weekends ago, I went for a hike in the National Forest by my house on a section of the Continental Divide Trail. If you’re not familiar, the Continental Divide Trail is 3,100 miles long and it runs from Mexico to Canada along the Continental Divide (hence the name) — it goes through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, and it usually takes people about SIX MONTHS to hike it. I was with my friends Cindy and Kathy, and we met a girl – probably 21-22 years old, from Chicago – who was hiking the trail by herself. Yep, she was hiking all the way to Canada ALONE. We were the first humans she’d seen in days, and she was SO happy to see us – she asked if she could walk with us to the trailhead, which of course, we said yes, and she chatted away the entire time peppering us with questions about our lives and what it was like to live in Wyoming – I’m pretty sure she knows my friend Cindy’s entire life story now, and might have earned herself an invite to Thanksgiving dinner at Cindy’s house. Anyway, after meeting this hiker, her story and what she is doing really stuck with me. For the next few days, I just sat with the idea of hiking such a long distance. What was it like to start such a journey? Probably scary, exciting, full of rookie mistakes, and figuring things out. What was the day to day like? Probably some days were harder than others, probably full of reminding yourself to focus on the trail in front of you, putting one foot in front of the other and just focusing on that next step. What was it like to finish such a journey? It’s hard to imagine, but I’m willing to bet a person feels an undeniable sense of pride and accomplishment. Six months of little steps forward propelled you 3,100 miles up mountains, down through valleys, across deserts and plains until you accomplish what you set out to do. As I thought about all of this, I couldn’t help but draw about a million life lessons from it all.  There is one thought that sticks with me that applies to all of us, as I think about hosting this podcast, and about you, as the nonprofit leader… Life is a long journey.  And if something isn’t working and you know you can fix it, you do. I have gotten to know you over the last year and I learned that while you listen to the podcast, you like to read more. You’d like to see more illustrations of what I’m talking about.  It’s true I have recording equipment and a “radio voice” but, I’m a writer naturally and by trade, and when we work in our strengths, more gets accomplished. So this will be the last episode of the Unlocking Your Nonprofit Potential podcast, and the beginning of the Unlocking Your Nonprofit Potential blog. This blog will give you easy to read, step by step answers to fix your social media problems.  You’ll learn about new ideas to implement so you can grow your nonprofit, bring in more clients and people who need your help, and when you grow, that gives donors even more reason to give to your organization.  You’re going to become the best your nonprofit’s ever been.  On the blog, there will also be more visual aids – yes, screenshots from Facebook and Instagram, and templates for how to create posts that make new people begin to know, like and trust your nonprofit. I’ll be giving you videos with instructions and tutorials of how to do all the things on Facebook and Instagram that are confusing and hard to figure out on your own. I’m still going to be here with you every step of the way – you’ll just be reading articles from me instead of listening to me explain things in this podcast.  With this blog, I’ll be able to serve you more and better. I’ll be creating courses for you, answering your questions on Facebook Live events, and providing you with more helpful and do-able tips and tricks that you can read (and re-read if need be!) and follow along with step by step instead of trying to listen to the instructions in a podcast.  BUT…If you just can’t get enough of my voice (ha!), you’ll be happy to know that you can binge listen to this podcast any time you’d like because it will be available on your podcast app and at NonprofitPotential.com, we just won’t be updating it with new episodes anymore. I am so excited to create this new blog for you with the same great content, with easy to implement social media and marketing steps, but with more information and better visual aids. This shift will allow me to serve you better, answer your questions and help you achieve your goals for your nonprofit. The new blog is on the same website as before – NonprofitPotential.com. Be sure to sign up for my weekly email on the website – you’ll see the signup box when you visit the website - so you can get the best social media and marketing tips for nonprofits delivered right to your inbox each week. Be sure to follow Unlocking Your Nonprofit Potential on Facebook and Instagram. We’re going to keep adding to the blog and growing the content there so you will have a reliable place to turn for all your social media and marketing questions. Thank you so much for listening to this podcast – it’s been a pleasure chatting with you each week and I look forward to hearing from you soon with questions you’d like me to answer on the blog – contact me through the blog! Geek Girl Reviews Hannah Gadsby's Nanette - Stand-Up Comedy that hits DEEP

Whew. This week on Geek Girl Reviews, we checked out Hannah Gadsby's stand-up comedy Nanette on Netflix. Whaaaat an INCREDIBLE and freaking powerful stand-up. It's an emotional rollercoaster and honestly, towards the end the tears of laughter definitely turned to tears of compassion. It feels wrong to call this a stand-up comedy.. because, okay, it starts out being pretty funny, but by the end of these 69 minutes, no one was laughing. Hannah gets deep and bares her soul and trauma and true experiences. And it's heartbreaking. It's beautiful. It's a plea for us all to be better fucking human beings. Hannah Gadsby is a stand-up comedian from Tasmania who rose to fame seemingly overnight when Nanette released on Netflix. But in reality, Hannah's been hard at work on the comedy scene for over a decade, playing to sold out shows across the globe. Outside the laughs about gender, sexuality, being a lesbian, the patriarchy, and misogyny, Hannah hits on some real serious issues. Homophobia, abuse, violence, shame, despair... Nanette cuts deep and true. As a society, we need to do better, to be better, to act better. We have it in us! It's just so fucking hard to see it right now. The world is so full of hatred, not just towards queer people, but towards anyone (and sometimes everyone) who's different from that person's norm. Let us tell you - we're better than this and you are, too! Diversity is strength. Diversity builds society. Celebrate and embrace all the different types of people that exist in this world! Hannah Gadsby is amazing. Nanette is amazing. It's a MUST WATCH for every single person in the world. If you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing and go check it out right meow! Trigger warning though for sure. And probably bring tissues. We've decided to issue an official #GeekHerringChallenge: Make connections. Find a way to connect with your community in a way that you haven't before. Real question:  If we're all looking for a partner to grow with, what if you're a woman who's already arrived?   For centuries women have been the family financial planner, strategist, and saver - and rightly so, because science has shown us that women are more likely than men to think long-term.  Meet Emilie Jerard, the most badass financial strategist out there, a self-taught bitcoin and cryptocurrency expert and advocate for individuals (especially women) to take control of their financial wellness with long-term strategy.  And this isn't even her job you guys, it's just her hobby.  Emilie holds two degrees and three jobs in the laboratory science and medical research field and -- YOU GUESSED IT.  This catch is m-f'ing single.  Whaaaat!  Turns out, when you're as intelligent as Emilie, you run into one of three problems:  1) You get friend-zoned a lot by your peer group, 2) Guys admit they're straight-up too intimidated by your success to date you, or 3) Men turn your relationship into a game of one upmanship as if there's an invisible success competition going on.     WHAT IS UP WITH THAT.     If you're a highly educated badass woman (which, of course you are, if you listen to this podcast) you don't want to miss this episode where we hash out the experiences Emilie has had and have our VOP Taylor weigh in on why men are so ridiculous around intelligent and successful women.     Learn more about Emilie here!
