These tariffs came into effect immediately, adding strain to global trade.Trump Orders Pause in Military Aid to UkraineUS President Donald Trump has ordered a temporary pause in military aid to Ukraine following a confrontation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. On the night of September 1, 2002, 35-year-old Michael Tardio and 31-year-old Christopher Monson drove to a restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, preparing to finalize a deal that could change their lives. They were meeting a man known only as Mr. Big to sell $1 million worth of jewelry, which had once belonged to Michael's girlfriend, Playboy Bunny Sandy Bentley. Hours later, a Mercedes SUV was found engulfed in flames in an upscale Studio City neighborhood. Inside, Michael and Chris were both dead—each shot multiple times in the chest. The jewelry was gone, and the fire had erased all forensic evidence. Despite years of investigation, the case remains unsolved, leaving investigators asking: Who was Mr. Big? And what really happened the night Michael and Chris were killed? 35-year-old Michael Tardio and 31-year-old Christopher Monson were last seen on the night of September 1, 2002, driving to a restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. They were in a Mercedes SUV, heading to meet a man known only as Mr. Big to sell $1 million worth of stolen jewelry. Hours later, the SUV was found on fire in Studio City. Inside, Michael and Chris were both shot multiple times, and the jewelry was gone. Investigators later learned that Michael Jacobs, a convicted felon who had introduced Michael Tardio to Mr. Big, had been in contact with them multiple times that night—and cell phone records placed him near both the meeting location and the crime scene. Andrea Keith, a criminal defense attorney in California, helps Kate discuss the trial of Rebecca Grossman. Grossman, a wealthy California socialite and philanthropist, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the deaths of 11-year old Mark Iskander and his 8-year old brother Jacob in a Los Angeles crosswalk in 2020. She must pay more than $47,000 in restitution. The wife of renowned plastic surgeon Peter Grossman was found guilty earlier this year of second-degree murder in the death of the young brothers. The two were crossing the street in the west San Fernando Valley with their mother Nancy and 5-year-old brother Zachary when Grossman, driving her white Mercedes SUV at 81 miles per hour, struck the two brothers, killing them. How would you expect a very controversial king to come into Forked River, New Jersey? Security is the first order of business. So, he would always ride into town in a bulletproof car with a security detail surrounding him. Since this king is very controversial, the security guards want to guard the king against attempted assassination. The king would want to ride in a vehicle befitting his office and position. How would it look for a king to ride into town in a Volkswagen Beetle? That would not be very dignified for the king of a nation. The car could be a new bulletproof Cadillac SUV or Mercedes SUV. After all, he is the king. There is a Person who invaded this mess of humanity 2000 years ago. He is fully God and fully man. He is the Creator of the universe, the Savior, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords. The religious establishment and the political powers were not happy with Jesus. His words and actions threatened their power, greed, and selfish agenda. Because there were religious leaders who wanted to do away with Jesus, He was in danger. He had just raised Lazarus from the dead, and many people followed Him. There were several occasions when the crowd wanted to make Jesus their militant king, but Jesus would slip away because He didn't come to be that type of King. Now, Jesus does something visible to make a grand proclamation. He chooses to ride into Jerusalem and publicly declare Himself King. This was a very bold move from Jesus for several reasons. Break 1: GCPS STORY 1: 5-Year-Old One Of Three Dead In Fatal Collision Sunday In Peachtree Corners A devastating car crash in Peachtree Corners resulted in three fatalities, including a 5-year-old girl, and left three others wounded. The incident occured at the crossroads of Peachtree Corners Circle and Elmside Village Lane, involving a dark blue BMW and a yellow Chevrolet Camaro. The BMW, while attempting a left turn onto Peachtree Corners Circle, collided with the Camaro traveling south on the same route. The impact was on the BMW's driver's side door. The occupants of the BMW, Armas Harding and Laura Rueda, both from Brookhaven, were pronounced dead at the scene. The Camaro's driver and front-seat passenger sustained severe injuries. Two children in the back seat, ages 5 and 6, were seriously hurt. The younger child, Aura Camarono, tragically passed away at the hospital due to her injuries. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of this tragic incident. STORY 2: Gwinnett Police: Suwanee Man Who Allegedly Assaulted Wife Crashed Car While Fleeing Police Lance Bradley Nelson, a 47-year-old Suwanee resident, is facing multiple charges following an alleged domestic assault incident. According to reports, Nelson is accused of physically assaulting his wife and keeping her at gunpoint in their home over a two-day period. The situation reportedly began as a verbal dispute before escalating. Following the assault, the victim managed to escape to a neighbor's residence and seek assistance. Nelson subsequently fled the scene in a grey Mercedes SUV, sparking a high-speed chase with the police. During the pursuit, Nelson reportedly crashed into several vehicles, including two police cars, before abandoning his SUV. Nelson then attempted to escape on foot but was eventually detained by officers near a local hotel. He is currently receiving treatment for minor injuries prior to being taken into custody. Fortunately no motorists involved in the collisions sustained any injuries. STORY 3: Local Democrats seeking re-election will face challenges from within their own party An array of Democrats in Gwinnett County is set to face internal party challenges in the forthcoming primary election, indicating a potential division within the party and lack of unanimous support for incumbent candidates. The list of challenged individuals includes County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, Sheriff Keybo Taylor, District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson, District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins, and Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell. Sheriff Keybo Taylor will find himself up against former contenders and Republicans in the primary. Similarly, District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson is set to compete against two prosecutors from her own office. Chairwoman Hendrickson faces opposition from ex-state Representative Donna McLeod; the victor will then go on to face a Republican candidate in the November elections. The school board, judicial positions, and congressional districts are also seeing contested races. State Representatives Derrick McCollum and David Clark have been confronted with challenges in the primaries. The retirements of Rep. Pedro Marin and Sen. Gloria Butler have instigated contested races for their replacement. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back. Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Artificial intelligence identifying new potentially deadly COVID-19 variants Researchers from The University of Manchester and Oxford University have utilized an AI framework, known as CLASSIX, to rapidly identify and monitor emerging COVID-19 variants. This innovative system streamlines the processing of extensive genomic data, thereby automating the detection of potentially problematic strains. Utilizing this approach, researchers can analyze an impressive 5.7 million sequences in a span of one to two days. This not only significantly reduces the time and resources needed compared to traditional methods but also enables faster responses to new variants. The CLASSIX framework integrates dimension reduction techniques with explainable clustering algorithms. This combination allows for the grouping of similar sequences based on their genetic patterns, facilitating more efficient tracking of variants. STORY 5: Social media filters fueling desire for more plastic surgery A recent study suggests an alarming trend where individuals are pursuing plastic surgery to mimic the filtered images of themselves seen on social media platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram. This phenomenon, referred to as "Snapchat dysmorphia," stems from unrealistic beauty standards propagated by photo-editing applications. The researchers found a link between frequent social media use and an increased desire for cosmetic procedures. This is especially prevalent among individuals who heavily engage with filtered images and influencers. The study, carried out by Boston University, stresses the necessity for healthcare practitioners to consider the influence of social media on patients' self-perception and aspirations for cosmetic alterations. We'll be back in a moment. Break 3: INGLES 3 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food longevity. ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW*** We'll have final thoughts after this. HER Style Podcast | Buy Less, Shop Smarter, Build a Wardrobe You Love
Maybe every generation before us has felt this way, but we're in kind of a weird and unprecedented time, aren't we? Last week, we were on a family vacation and I don't remember how the conversation got started, but my dad turned to my sister and said, “I don't really get the whole influencer thing.” My sister explained to him that influencers sell a lifestyle. They sell themselves. People buy what they're selling because they find something in them that they desire: beauty, luxury, edge, adventure, confidence. From the original Mad Men of advertising to celebrity endorsements, companies have always used buyer psychology to influence our purchasing decisions. We're sold a lifestyle every time we see those picture perfect couples on Christmas morning with the new Mercedes SUV in the driveway wrapped up in a big, shiny, red bow. I get emails from Vogue magazine every day with headlines like, “J.Lo Wears This Dramatic Accessory While Shopping In Capri”. We're made to want what other people have. Social media influencers are simply the latest iteration of age old advertising. Maybe you've succumbed to the influencer craze. If so, you're not alone. The influencer industry, as we know it today, has exceeded 21 billion dollars and more than doubled in size since 2019. Perhaps you've gotten sucked into the even newer de-influencing trend, scrolling TikTok videos and Instagram reels for products people tell you NOT to buy… and often, what to buy instead. Yeah, that's a sneaky one. It's like the Matrix of social selling! Whether you frequent the feeds of a handful of carefully selected micro-influencers or whether you distrust anyone selling anything on social media, we need to navigate this era of online shopping with greater intention. So in today's episode, I'm breaking down my thoughts on influencer marketing, the de-influencing trend, and why buying LESS is the counterintuitive secret to having more. In September 2002, when Timmy Iannello was still involved with the Garden of Eden, a doorman named Michael Tardio was murdered off-premises in a bizarre incident in North Hollywood where he and a friend from Las Vegas were shot and killed. According to police, their rented Mercedes SUV was set on fire to destroy the evidence. "Tardio was trying to fence jewels and it caught up to him,” says Darnell. “Timmy took a lot of heat when he made some specific statements [to police], against the nightlife code of ethics. I was back and forth to New York when all that went down. I made sure to stay clear, once someone got popped. I had priors for that, and if my name would have come up, even in the slightest, I could have become a ‘person of interest.'” Tardio, 35, a family man with two kids, was well-liked within the club community. He was also, according to multiple reports, dating Sandy Bentley, who along with her sister Mandy (nee Amanda) comprise the Bentley Twins, two of Hugh Hefner's polyamorous posse of multiple girlfriends, circa 2000 (they both appear on the cover of Playboy in May 2000). Dave Osokow, the bar manager at Citizen Smith, who later dated Mandy Bentley, confirms that her twin sister “ripped off a bunch of jewels and tried to fence them through Tardio.” Tardio's friend, Chris Monson, a stunt man and occasional actor who had flown in from Phoenix, was apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time. https://www.hollywoodinterrupted.com/single-post/2019/12/13/the-ham-whispererThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

At 2:49 pm on April 15, 2013, a pressure cooker bomb containing ball bearings and nails, exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street. 14 seconds later, another bomb exploded 200 yards away. As the crowd began to panic and run, police officers and medical personnel jumped to action. As a result of the bombing, 3 died, including an 8 year old boy, and 264 people were injured. The suspects, later identified three days later, were Tamerlan Tsarnaev (26) and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (19). The brothers immigrated from Kyrgyzstan in 2002. Tamerlan was an amateur boxer, while Dzhokhar studied Marine Biology at UMass Dartmouth. The brothers, who were practicing muslims, had a disliking towards the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, more so Tamerlan (who influenced Dzhokhar). Tamerlan wanted revenge for what US forces were doing to the muslim community in both countries. On April 18, after their identities were posted everywhere, they shot and killed an MIT police officer while he was sitting in his cruiser. They then stole an Mercedes SUV and held the driver hostage. While they stopped for gas, the hostage escaped and called 911. After the Mercedes was ID'd, police attempted to stop the car, but a shootout ensued. Tamerlan was accidentally ran over by his brother while Dzhokhar was trying to flee. He died an hour later. The entire city of Boston and its surrounding areas were placed on lockdown as a manhunt began. The next day, Dzhokhar was found hiding in a parked boat in someone's backyard. He was arrested and charged with 30 counts. He was sentenced to death on June 24, 2015.

It's being run by the Calvary Group, who are considerably better organized and educated than our typical opponent. Meanwhile, some good news. Tim Van Norman, from the USFWS, set up a call with us and Christina Scaringe of Animal Defenders International to discuss the import of Hoover the tiger from Peru. He wanted to grant it but didn't want to base it on our meeting the requirements of the law, because he says it's too easy for the bad guys to make the same claims. He asked us to SAY that we would donate to tiger conservation in the future like we have done in the past. We did him one better and donated $5000 when he said 1k would be fine. Our import permit should be coming in the next 2 weeks if I got his drift. Also USDA has a new lead person in APHIS who sent us all (the Big Cat Coalition) a letter saying they would educate the bad guys about why cub handling is bad, but were so vague that it seemed they were just trying to blow us off while being able to answer to Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Blumenthal. Anna Frostic, atty for HSUS and Leigh Henry of WWF both seem to be more optimistic from their respective meetings, than what I feel from this letter. We will see. Last night we went to a fundraiser, at the Sena's home on Davis Island, for Patrick Murphy, who is running for Congress. On the way home we stopped at Sandy's restaurant, Tampa Joe's, to pick up my credit card that I left behind last Sunday when my mother and I went their for lunch. Howie called my mother, putting her on speaker, to let her know that she could stop looking for it, and to tease me about being so forgetful. Mom said I've always been this way. I know I have been since the amnesia, but don't know if I was always this way. Later in the day: Half way through Denny Mitchell's tour a backup intern called for coordinator check. Gale and I both went. I stayed with the tour until they left the property. Gale said they were asking the intern specifics about whether or not Teisha really belonged to us and about the other OH cats and taking photos of things that regular guests never do. A small, thin, blonde, 20ish woman was the one asking all the questions and her friend, a larger woman, with a long blonde braid, was filming her asking and then filming the answers, but they seemed to be trying to act like they didn't know each other. I glued myself to the thin blonde and she never asked another question, nor did she pull her camera back out, which I had been told she was using for video, but trying to make it look like she wasn't. She was carrying it, awkwardly, and pointing at me initially, from what I saw, and then quit when I was right next to her for the rest of the tour. She wasn't wearing the vox, but rather had it and the earbud, coiled up in her hand. Everyone else at least had it around their necks, although a number of people weren't wearing the earbud. Denny was talking loud enough that I could hear him in the back and he doesn't play the iPad stories. I noticed there was one male, tall, bald, middle eastern looking who was engrossed in his cell phone, not wearing the vox, and who kept lingering behind. He wasn't looking at cats when he lingered. Just his phone. A few times I had to leave the blonde just to let him know I was watching him too. He was clearly with a young, dark haired woman of mid 20s and an elderly woman, who appeared to be her mother, who was riding the golf cart. I was able to figure out that Cynthia F paid for the trio and the cart. She also bought stuff at the end and was very polite and interested, according to Denny. The decoy ;-) At the Kitten Cabana the dark haired woman seemed put off by what we do with the kittens, which you don't see very often, and seemed to exchange glances with the thin blonde, who appeared to agree. She had wanted nothing to do with looking at kittens. As Denny did his wrap up, shortly after that, the middle eastern guy and the dark haired woman went to the far side of the golf cart, away from Denny and the back up, and the middle eastern guy was clearly agitated and showing the woman his phone. I walked around and got right behind both of them and he stopped talking. The heavy set friend of the thin blonde took photos of the solar relay up on the post that we just installed, all of the cage signs, all of the donor signs, me and the thin blonde and had a goofy grin on her face like she was at Disney land on her 6th birthday. I followed them all into the gift shop, where the they had all five huddled together around the photos we sell. They were talking like they all knew each other. When I walked up to join them they acted like they were thinking to buy photos but no one did. Then the three younger women all proceeded to take one of every piece of literature they could find. The man was still mesmerized by his phone. The woman who rode on the cart, and who probably was Cynthia F, bought two magnets, long after all of the rest of them had gone to their cars. I noticed that once she was in the dark BMW or Mercedes SUV with the middle eastern guy and the dark haired woman, that the red Dodge mini van where the two blondes had gone, closed their doors and led the way out of the parking lot. I took a photo of their tag. The middle eastern guy could clearly see me doing it, as he was one car behind her. As he pulled out I took a photo of his plate. He saw me in the rear view mirror, because clearly he was watching for me to do it, and backed up, demanding that I delete the photo. I told him I'd delete the photo if he showed me his driver's license. He refused, but said he'd show it to the deputy. The deputy told us that I didn't have to delete the photo, and tried to talk the guy down, but he was having kittens over it. I told the officer that I'd be happy to delete it, if the man would show the officer his driver's license. The officer said he didn't care to see it and began saying again that I didn't have to delete the plate. The guy then showed his driver's license to me, and asked if I would delete the photo. I had a hard time reading it, because I was nervous, I have a hard time reading with contacts, and he was all shaky, but it looked like H. I deleted the image and then he asked me to delete it from trash. I'd never done that before, so he walked me through it, and I deleted it there too. Then he was as happy and nice as anyone you could ever meet. Maybe just a culture thing. AND, it could have just been that he saw me photograph the other car and that made him suspicious. It's possible the two groups weren't connected. In the time we spent arguing over the photo of his plate, he asked why he would pay money to come here and I would invade his privacy. I told him there are animal abusers in town, pointed to the officer and said that's why he's here, and that by watching him I could tell that he had no interest at all in the tour or the cats. He said he was mad because he had asked the intern where a cat came from and she told him he would have to ask the tour guide. He claims that is what set him off (and it didn't take much). He couldn't believe we were so rude. I pointed out that the rules video they were shown before the tour specifically told guests that they can't ask our back ups questions and that our back ups aren't allowed to be having their own conversations. He told me he has a thousand dogs back home, and that he's an animal lover and would never harm an animal. He asked why I had singled him out and I told him that he wasn't the only one acting suspicious and that I had taken photos of them and their plates too. I wanted to be sure the blondes got that message, if he really is with them. Summary is: I don't know if the two groups were together and no way to know, from the Zerve list, who the blonde ladies were. If it is any indicator Elizabeth D bought her two tickets the same day and both Elizabeth and Cynthia had stated they had been here before. Elizabeth D filled out the release form on 3/2/16 according to Salsa, which would have been at the time of her ticket purchase. Other than asking about the OH cats and taking odd photos, they weren't much bother, and probably not worth the time I spent documenting this, but I figured better safe than sorry. Howie pointed out, after watching checkin, that he was surprised how hard it is to tell our guests from the bad guys. I didn't find any of these names in our blocked list from FB, nor in Joe's friends list. Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. On January 24, 2012, the body of Jane Bashara, a 56-year-old resident of ritzy Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, was found dead in the backseat of her Mercedes SUV in a seedy area of Detroit. The police first went to interview her husband, Bob Bashara, who came from an extremely prominent Lebanese family in the area. Bob denied anything to do with his wife's murder. Eventually, the finger was pointed at a man named Joe Gentz, a developmentally disabled handyman who worked for Bob. But as the police continued to investigate the case, they would discover that Bob's squeaky clean Rotary Club life was not as it seemed. Bob was involved in affairs, tax evasion, a secret BDSM lifestyle, had ties with the Italian Mafia, and definitely did not want a divorce from Jane; something Jane was pursuing. Investigators were certain Bob had something to do with his wife's death, but did he work alone? Or did he have an accomplice in Joe Gentz? And what had happened to Jane?Show Notes:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24611841-murder-in-grosse-pointe-parkThanks to our sponsor for this episode:HelpYouFind.Me: The secure way to share your important account details with your loved onesCheck out www.HelpYouFind.Me/michigan10 to save 10% off any purchase

She walks past the car as well, but doesn't get a clear picture. She decides to give it another try, this time riding her bicycle. When she returns to the cafeteria, she shows her father the pictures she has taken. They can see a person sitting shotgun in the car. They zoom in on his face and can't believe what they see. Some vehicles are designed specifically to shuttle people to and fro in comfort and that is their lot in life. That's fine, those vans, large sedans and large crossovers can do a great job at just being boring, unassuming shuttles. However, that doesn't cut the mustard in Affalterbach, and the folks at AMG can't leave anything alone (we're looking at you R-Class). The Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 is a prime example of excess being a good thing, especially in the automotive world. On this episode of Quick Spin, Wes Raynal puts the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 through its paces and comes away with a smile on his face. Raynal takes you along for a drive in the hulking Mercedes SUV and narrates his adventure. He also elaborates on these recordings with Wesley Wren in the studio. Most importantly, Raynal dives deep into the GLS 63 and finds why the thing exists in the first place.

NISSAN LEAF E+ BRINGS MORE POWER, MORE RANGE So by now you may have seen the news online the long awaited Nissan LEAF has a new longer range variant. Well, it will do later in 2019 when you can finally get one. Here's everything I’ve been able to dig up for you, and some of my thoughts based on the first 12 hours of reaction. Let's start with what the same, everything you can see! Exterior will have a new badge and interior has an 8" screen rather than 7". You will charge it with CHAdeMO and not CCS. First up from InsideEVs, clarity on the name and when you can get one: "Nissan LEAF e+ is the global name for the car, but particularly in the U.S. and Canada, Nissan would like to name the top of the line version – the LEAF PLUS Series. There will be three trim levels: LEAF S PLUS, LEAF SV PLUS and LEAF SL PLUS. Market launch plan: Japan – January 2019, U.S. – Spring 2019 (pricing to be announced closer to on-sale date) Europe – Mid-2019. Battery - it's 62kWh not the 60kWh we were led to believe, or even the 64kWh assumed when rumours last year pointed towards them using LG Chem packs. "Even with a 25 percent increase in energy density and the increase in energy storage capacity, the LEAF e+ battery pack is almost the same size and configuration as the pack in the Nissan LEAF. Other than a 5-millimeter increase in overall height (16-inch wheels), the car’s exterior and interior dimensions are unchanged" says Nissan So that range is 226 miles (364 km) EPA range vs 151 miles (243 km) for the 40kW version. Nissan says: "Thanks to the available new 70 kW (100 kW peak) Quick Charging system, the 2019 Nissan LEAF e+ can charge more efficiently than ever.*3 Based on early testing, Nissan LEAF e+ owners can expect similar charging times when hooked up to a 100 kW charger as current LEAF owners do with a 50 kW charger, despite a 55 percent larger battery storage capacity.” Motor: the 160kW motor us up from 110kW, a 36% increase. They are drawing our attention to the 50mph-70mph difference. Pricing: The base Nissan LEAF e+ will start from ¥4,162,320 (around $38,370). In the case of Europe, Nissan announced two Limited Edition versions for “old” and new version: LEAF 3.ZERO (40 kWh) – from €39,900 (orders now, deliveries from May). LEAF 3.ZERO e+ (62 kWh) – from €45,500 (orders now, deliveries from Summer). If you add the same premium to US prices it should be ~$35k. ZERO gets the bigger screen and phone mirroring, and colours. And it's available to order now. Nissan says: "“The Nissan LEAF 3.ZERO e+ Limited Edition will also be available to order from January 9 across European markets. This limited edition – of which only 5,000 units will be produced for Europe – will feature a higher output capable of delivering 160 kW (217 PS) and longer range capabilities with expected driving range of up to 385 km* from a single charge." Forbes says: "The battery continues to be supplied by AESC, Nissan’s in-house battery division that is in the process of being sold to China's Envison Group. Like all prior iterations of the Leaf it is still air-cooled, running contrary to the industry conventions. Also contrary to some earlier speculation, Nissan hasn't switched to LG Chem as a cell supplier." https://insideevs.com/nissan-reveals-leaf-e-plus-ces/ https://insideevs.com/nissan-announces-leaf-e-price-europe-japan/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/samabuelsamid/2019/01/08/2020-nissan-leaf-plus-crosses-the-200-mile-threshold/#341706836ece MINI PLOTS MAIDEN HOT HATCH EV FOR 2019 REVEAL "Mini’s first electric car will also be the industry’s first electric hot hatch, engineering sources in Germany have revealed." says Mark Tisshaw for Autocar: "Rather than a sole focus on economy and eking out range, Mini is developing its electric car with performance in mind. To that end, the model will be badged Cooper S E when it is unveiled later this year to reflect its performance hierarchy in the Mini range. The BMW i3 S’s 181bhp electric motor is understood to be the most likely power source for the new Mini, meaning it will give little away to the 189bhp 2.0-litre engine of the Cooper S." The drivetrain won't include BMW's 5th generation technology though. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mini-plots-maiden-hot-hatch-ev-2019-reveal NINE IN 10 ELECTRIC CAR DRIVERS WOULD NEVER GO BACK TO PETROL "Almost nine in 10 electric vehicle drivers would never go back to driving a car powered by petrol or diesel, according to new research" reports Motor1.com: "A study by electric vehicle YouTube channel Fully Charged found that 88 percent of plug-in car drivers said they would definitely not switch back to fossil fuels after having owned an electric vehicle (EV). Seven percent of those quizzed said they were not sure whether they would turn back to internal combustion, while the remaining five percent said they would consider making a return to petrol- or diesel-powered cars. However, just under a quarter of the channel’s audience (24 percent) said they currently owned an electric car, with the vast majority (54 percent) claiming to own a petrol-powered vehicle. Diesel was the second most popular fuel, accounting for 35 percent of viewers, while a combined total of 11 percent were the owners of petrol hybrids or plug-in hybrids." With 7,700 taking part in the survey it's a large number. https://uk.motor1.com/news/299997/ev-drivers-wont-return-petrol/ MERCEDES EQC GETS SAMPLED BY JAY LENO "Until it actually makes market debut, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz EQC gets the Jay Leno treatment." according to DriveMag: "Naturally, Mr. Leno drives an EQC 400 4Matic in prototype guise and for more background on the EV, he takes Bastian Schult (Powertrain Testing Engineer at Mercedes-Benz) for a ride. Now, you might already know that the EQC relies on an 80-kWh battery pack that allows for a max range of 280 miles (450 km) on a single charge, with power coming from two electric motors that make together 408 PS (300 kW)" MERCEDES EQC ELECTRIC SUV TO COST FROM UNDER £50K IN THE UK? .."The new Mercedes EQC – Mercedes’ electric SUV aimed at the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron – looks set to cost from under £50k when it arrives in the UK." speculates CarsUK.net: "When Leno asked the Mercedes man how much the EQC would cost in the US, he didn’t have an answer. But he did say that in Europe it will cost about the same as the Mercedes GLC 43. Which, in the UK, starts at £48,960. If the Mercedes man is right, you’ll be able to grab an electric Mercedes SUV with 400bhp, 0-62mph in around 5.0 seconds, an 80kWh battery pack and a range of over 200 miles for £15k less than an I-Pace and £20k less than an e-tron." http://www.carsuk.net/mercedes-eqc-electric-suv-to-cost-from-under-50k-in-the-uk/ FIRST AUDI E-TRON DELIVERIES IN GERMANY FEBRUARY Talking of the e-tron, Mark Kane at InsdeiEV's.com published a story today: "So far, several hundred cars were registered in the first few markets, but it turns out that customer deliveries will not happen this month. According to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), first customers in Germany will get the e-tron in February. If Audi does not sort out its problems with the e-tron launch, it will be overtaken in Europe by Tesla Model 3, which also should hit the market in February." https://insideevs.com/first-audi-e-tron-deliveries-germany-postponed/ TOYOTA PUSHES HYBRIDS DESPITE SLOWING GAS-ELECTRIC AUTO SALES "Don't tell Toyota the once hot gas-electric hybrid vehicle is losing its appeal." says CNBC: "The automaker is planning to leverage its dominance in hybrid autos as it grows the number of full- and hybrid-electric vehicles sold in the U.S. and around the world." Bob Carter, executive vice president of sales for Toyota North America "We are working on an entire portfolio of hybrids which we have been selling since 1997, plug-in hybrids, full battery electric vehicles as well as our fuel cell vehicles. Those vehicles represent about 9 percent of our sales in 2018. We have set a goal that it will be 15% of our sales next year in 2020." Episode 51 – Can you pass the financial literacy test Want to minimise the chance of living off nothing but a meagre age pension in later life? There’s a great proverb that I heard many years ago and have never forgotten “a fool and his money are easily separated”. So how do you ensure you’re not the fool? The solution is to have at least a basic understanding of the financial world. We call this Financial Literacy. That doesn’t mean you need to become an expert – you can hire people for that. But you need to know enough to be able to sniff out a bad deal, and to avoid those big missteps. You need to be able to understand the risks you are taking, and gauge whether the likely return adequately compensates for that risk. So, today’s post takes on a question and answer format. Let’s see how you fare when it comes to financial literacy. Question 1 You log onto your internet banking and your credit card shows an available balance of $7,400 and an account balance of $2,600. Should you make any repayments on this account? The answer is YES. The account balance is the key element here – this is what you owe, and if you don’t repay it, you will pay significant interest. Many, many people look at the available balance and think in terms of “well I’ve got that much still to spend”. I very much suspect banks present this figure hoping you will do exactly that. This available balance mentality is what traps a lot of people when it comes to credit cards. Focus on what you owe, and get this down. Question 2 Let’s stick with credit cards for a moment longer. Say you have a credit card where you owe $2,000, with an interest rate of 18% and you pay only the minimum repayments each month. Assuming you don’t spend any more on that card, how long will it take you to fully pay it off: less than 5 years, between 5 and 10 years, or more than 10 years? The answer is that it will take you over 15 years to pay off your credit card if all that you do is make the minimum repayments each month. You’ll pay a fortune in interest too. Just like with the available balance mind tricks, the banks requirement for a minimum repayment is not because they are your friend. They want you paying as much interest as possible for as long as possible. Ideally you would repay your credit card every month in full so that you avoid paying any interest. If you aren’t able to do that, then certainly ensure you pay considerably more than the minimum suggested by your bank. And of course if you find credit card debt to be a problem, have your limit reduced to minimise the potential damage. You could have the limit reduced to $1,000 for instance – enough capacity to buy some concert tickets online, or deal with a short term emergency, but not so much room that you could dig yourself into a really deep hole. You could go the whole hog and do without a credit card altogether, though in the modern online world I would certainly find that challenging. Question 3 Your Gross salary last month was $6,000 and your Net salary was $4,500 - how much was paid into your bank account? The answer is $4,500. I find a lot of people get confused between gross and net salary, and I guess they are quite jargon sounding terms. Your gross salary is what you employer pays out. If you’re sitting down for a pay review and your boss talks about giving you a pay rise, they’ll be talking about your gross salary – how much they pay to have you on the team. But what is more interesting to you is your Net salary – how much actually goes into your bank account. The difference between Gross and Net salary is mainly deductions for tax and superannuation, though you may have other deductions as well, which leads nicely into the next few questions on the most common other form of deduction from your gross income – Salary Sacrifice. Question 4 You catch the train to work in your office job. You have a 3 year old car which you own debt free, and it’s meeting your needs. One lunch break you listen to a presentation about how you could salary sacrifice to buy a brand new car. They suggest you will save tax. Should you take up this opportunity? Whilst there will be circumstances where salary sacrificing to buy a car might make sense, this is certainly not one of them. For starters, you don’t need another car! When you salary sacrifice to buy a car you are borrowing money to finance the deal, and then paying it back through your normal pay each fortnight. That means you’re paying interest on a loan – a cost to you. Also, because they always focus on new cars, the amount tends to be a lot, usually far more than you would spend if you were just going out to buy a car on the weekend. I’ve seen so many times where people buy a car via salary sacrifice for say $60,000, when if they were just out shopping for a car with their savings, they’d never spend that much. Cars are really bad investments, in fact they’re not investments at all. They cost you money to keep, and they decline in value from the moment you take ownership. Whatever marginal tax benefit you might get is well and truly swamped by the interest you’ve paid for a car that you didn’t need, and will be worth a fraction of what you paid for it in 5 years time. Question 5 You work full time as a veterinary nurse, and have recently paid off your home loan resulting in you having some money available to save. You’re 50 years old and are wondering if you should work on adding to your super given you’d hope to retire in 10 years at age 60. Should you look into salary sacrificing into super? The answer here is a clear Yes. Now superannuation in Australia is complex. There are limits as to how much you can contribute, limits on how much you can convert to a pension in retirement, and of course whatever money you put in their can’t be accessed until you satisfy a condition of release – typically over age 60 and retired. So adding to your super is something to think through thoroughly, and I would suggest, get some professional advice on. But for many people, salary sacrificing to super in the scenario presented would be a great idea. When you salary sacrifice, the money is coming out of your gross salary. So remember, this is the higher amount, before any tax has been deducted. Now it’s not a total tax free situation, because when your contribution hits your super fund it is taxed at 15%, and more if you earn over $250,000. But paying 15% is likely to be less than the tax you would have paid had you not salary sacrificed and simply taken the money as cash. So salary sacrificing to super is typically a financially sensible thing, whereas salary sacrificing for a brand new car that you don’t need is typically not financially wise. Question 6 Which of these is an investment asset? A new leather jacket, a new Mercedes SUV, an $8,000 carbon fibre road bike, or an ETF? Whilst the first 3 options here may well give you pleasure, and of course that has value in its own right, none of these should be considered an investment asset. Only the ETF – Exchange Traded Fund is an investment asset. So what is an investment asset and why should we care? The core distinction is that investments are expected to either increase in value over time, or produce income that you can use. Often investments will do both. The jacket, the new car, and the bike will achieve neither of these. I find some people, especially when buying very expensive items like luxury cars, try and justify that it is an investment and not an expense. And whilst I’m sure there are some cars that are truly collectable and will rise in value over time, these are not the type of vehicle most people are talking about. They’re making a lifestyle purchase and trying to fool themselves into thinking it is financially sensible. If you want the luxury car, fine. The goal isn’t to be the richest person in the cemetery, and so if that makes you happy, and you can afford it, go for it. But do recognise that you are buying something that is losing value all the time, and costs money in insurance, registration, fuel, and maintenance, during its life time. In a financial literacy context, recognise the difference between an investment asset, and something that is really an expense. Question 7 If you bought a share for $2.00 and it rose in value to $2.50, is it true to say it has risen 50%? Sorry to stress your brain with a little maths here, but one of the most common ways that people get taken for a financial ride is that they don’t understand percentages. The answer here is no. The share has risen by 50cents, which given an initial purchase price of $2.00 means it has risen 25%. We’ve all got calculators in our phone so there’s no need to be a maths wiz. If someone is putting a financial proposition to you in percentage terms, and you can’t easily turn that into dollars and cents in your head, then pull out the calculator and do the numbers. Let’s say you were listing your home with a real estate agent and expected to get $700,000. One agent quotes you a flat $10,000 to sell your property and the other quotes 1.9%. Now the less financially literate will think “gee $10,000, that’s a lot of money. But only 1.9%, that’s not very much, I’ll go with that guy.” Yet actually the percentage option will result in a cost of $13,300, more than the flat fee. So recognise that percentages can deceive and don’t hesitate to pull out the calculator if you’re unsure. I think that’s enough of me being quiz master for today. Financial literacy can include a whole lot more – budgeting, being able to calculate your net worth, understanding compound interest, and having appropriate insurance in place to name a few. The Money Smart web site is a great resource and I’d highly recommend checking that out to further educate yourself on the basics of financial literacy.
