Third Sunday of Advent (Year C) - Turn From Sin

Read OnlineThe crowds asked John the Baptist, “What should we do?” Luke 3:10Among those within the crowds who were asking Saint John the Baptist this question were tax collectors, soldiers and ordinary people. John gave an answer to them all, first telling them to turn away from the sins that they struggled with the most. Sin takes on many forms and often is closely associated with our daily duties in life. Some sins are sins of commission, meaning sins we commit by an intentional act. Some sins are those of omission, meaning a lack of certain virtues or a failure to do what we ought to do.After addressing the particular sins that those in the crowds were struggling with, John then turns their attention to Christ. He states to them that “one mightier than I is coming” and that “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” In other words, John was giving the people a twofold command. First, work to overcome sin. And second, turn your eyes to Him Who is coming to you. Repenting from sin is not enough. Once we repent, we must then fill the void within our souls with the presence of Christ.Advent, just like Lent, is an important time within our liturgical year to heed these messages. Though it's true that we must work to overcome sin and turn to Christ every day of the year, God knows we need a special time each year when we give concerted effort to these spiritual endeavors. So before Advent passes you by, heed the words of the Baptist and take some time to examine your conscience thoroughly. Perhaps use a detailed list of the Ten Commandments or the Seven Capital Sins. Once you do that, seek out an opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Doing so is essential to a fruitful Advent season.Once you thoroughly repent of the sins you struggle with the most right now, turn to the Savior of the World with special attentiveness to the miracle of the Incarnation this Advent. Spend time adoring the God Who came to us in the form of a little child. Meditate on this Gift. Gaze at a nativity scene prayerfully. Read the Scripture passages about the birth of Christ. Close your eyes and imagine yourself there at His birth.Reflect, today, upon this twofold exhortation from John and apply it to your Advent preparations. Cleanse your soul in a special way from all sin this Advent. Then prayerfully ponder and meditate upon the reality we are preparing to celebrate. As John says, allow the Christ Child to truly “baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” through your deepening devotion and prayer this Advent. My dear Jesus, please help me to see my sins as You see them. Help me to be attentive to every sinful action I commit and even those smaller sins of omission. As I ponder my sin, please draw me to Your mercy and grace so that I can then open the eyes of my soul more deeply to see You and to adore You more completely this Advent. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Read Online“Jesus said to his disciples: “What is your opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray?”  Matthew 18:12This Gospel passage goes on to say that the man who finds that one stray sheep “rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.” At first, this might seem unfair. Why not primarily rejoice over the ninety-nine who did not stray? Saint Hillary, in commenting on this passage, interprets the man who sought out the one stray sheep as the Son of God. He left the “ninety-nine,” meaning the glory of the hosts of Heaven, to descend to earth to seek out straying humanity. Humanity as a whole is that one lost sheep. That includes us all.The first thing this interpretation reveals to us is that the Son of God was clearly sent on a mission to seek out each and every one of us after we strayed far from the Father in Heaven. The Father did not sit back and wait for us to return. Rather, He sent the Son on a diligent mission of seeking us out to bring us back into His divine fold.As we reflect upon this passage, it is important to see the zeal and determination of our Lord as He seeks us out. Do you see this in your own life? Sometimes we can fall into the trap of thinking that it is primarily our responsibility to seek out God. And though we certainly have this responsibility, our duty is made much easier when we understand how passionately our Lord seeks us out and desires to find us when we stray. Only in Heaven will we fully understand all that our Lord has done to seek us out, day in and day out. But for now, we must strive to understand this spiritual truth so that we will be more open to Jesus' diligent search for us.A second thing this passage reveals is the joy in the Heart of the Son of God every time He finds us and carries us away from our sin. Too often we can fall into the trap of seeing God as a judgmental God who is angry at us and condemning. But if we understand the extent to which the Son of God went, so as to find us when we stray, and if we can understand the joy in His heart upon finding us and carrying us away from sin, then we will more readily open ourselves to Him, to His gentle invitations, and to His merciful Heart every time He comes to us by grace.Reflect, today, upon the great anticipation in the Heart of our Lord as He personally seeks you out. The anticipation is that of joy—the joy that He is filled with as He picks you up and gently carries you back to the Father. Allow this joy in the Heart of our Lord to come to fruition so that you will share in this abundance of joy. My diligent Lord, You seek me out, day and night, never tiring of calling me to return more fully to Yourself. Please help me to fill Your Heart with joy by always responding to Your gentle invitations of love and mercy. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Read OnlineHerod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.” Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Mark 6:17–19The suffering and death of Saint John the Baptist greatly parallels the suffering and death of Jesus. They were cousins. John was one of the first to acknowledge the divine presence of our Lord when he leaped for joy in the womb of his mother during the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. John lived a holy and simple life, embracing His mission to prepare the way for the Lord. He was the last and greatest of the Old Testament prophets. Of him, Jesus said that there was no one born of woman who was greater than John. For these reasons, we should not be the least bit surprised that John's suffering and death parallelled and prefigured the death of the Savior of the World.Herod was fearful of John, believing him to be a holy man of God. He imprisoned him with a certain regret, knowing that he was innocent. Similarly, before Pilate condemned Jesus to death, he found Him not guilty of any crime. Pilate knew Jesus was innocent but allowed fear to direct his choice to condemn our Lord.John was ultimately killed because of the hatred and plotting of Herodias, the unlawful wife of Herod. It was Herodias' anger that became a weapon, forcing Herod to put John to death. Similarly, it was the jealousy and anger of the religious leaders at that time that instigated and drove the death of Jesus. Pilate, like Herod, was at first unwilling to condemn our Lord. But the relentless hatred of the scribes and Pharisees compelled Pilate to condemn Jesus, just as it was Herodias' hatred that compelled Herod to kill John. After John's death, some of his disciples came to carry his body away for burial. This was permitted by Herod, perhaps because of his feelings of guilt. So also with our Lord, Pilate permitted some disciples and the holy women to carry Jesus' dead body to the tomb for burial. In the end, the good fruit of Jesus' death infinitely overshadowed the crime that was committed against Him. So also with John. We can be certain that, as a martyr, the blood he shed as a witness to Christ bore spiritual fruit that surpassed all he had done in his public ministry. Each of us is called to imitate our Lord and, therefore, should also take inspiration from Saint John the Baptist. They both were innocent but suffered greatly. They both spoke the truth, despite the hatred of some. They both gave their lives, in accord with the Father's plan. Jesus was John's Savior; John was but a precursor and servant of our Lord. Reflect, today, upon the invitation God has given to you to imitate the life of John the Baptist by uniting yourself to his Lord. The first form of imitation will take place when you commit yourself to the proclamation of the truth in accord with your mission. What mission has God given to you? How is He calling you to proclaim the Gospel with courage, strength, determination and fidelity to the end? Reflect, also, upon the injustice inflicted first upon John and then upon our Lord. As you do, try to look at any injustice you have received in life in the light of John's and Jesus' lives. They did not run away from injustice. They embraced it as a sacrifice and offered it to the Father in Heaven. Jesus' Sacrifice brought forth the Salvation of the World; John's was but a sharing in that glorious offering. Make your offering with them, and do not hesitate to do so with deep love and trust in the Father's plan. Most glorious Lord, You invited Saint John the Baptist to prepare the way for Your coming and Your death. He gave his life as a martyr, and this sacrifice bore an abundance of good fruit. Please give me the grace to walk in his footsteps by faithfully fulfilling my mission in life with courage and strength. May I never waver in the face of injustice so that I can embrace it and make it my spiritual offering to You. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Read Online“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life?” Matthew 16:26Would you like to “gain the whole world?” Many people daydream about becoming exceptionally rich and being able to purchase everything they ever wanted. Others dream of doing heroic acts that thrust them into the public spotlight and lead to public admiration. Still, others dream of having great power in this world and being a person of great importance. Though none of these are bad in and of themselves, the inordinate desire for them will damage your relationship with God. And when one of these desires becomes the dominant and all-consuming desire within, the result is that you forfeit your eternal soul. When we speak of the “world,” we can understand different things. First, this is a reference to all the material things of this world—for example, the best of food and drink, self-indulgence, fleshly pleasures, material wealth, and all that is temporary and passing in this life. Second, the “world” can refer to pride and desire for attention and praise. This is when we become consumed with concern about what others think and say about us. Third, the “world” can refer to the desire for power so as to insert our own will. At a very high level, this is often the cause of wars among countries. One leader has a desire for domination and control. This desire for power and control can also affect each person within any part of that person's life, including family, friends, work, social circles, etc.The common thread among all three of these examples of worldly desires is the deception that obtaining more of them will satisfy you. Though they may satisfy you in a temporal and passing way, these desires will also have the effect of destroying your soul. This is because we have to choose. Either we seek to satiate the spiritual yearning of our souls, or we will seek to satiate ourselves with the passing promises of the world. We cannot have both.It should be noted that obtaining wealth, being publicly praised, or being put in a position of power is not evil in and of itself. In fact, any one of these offers potential for good. The problem arises when a person seeks one of these worldly desires for selfish reasons and under the delusion that it will provide fulfillment. Truth be told, any one of those situations imposes a true cross on the person who is seeking to serve God alone. The responsibility that comes with wealth, prestige, or power is real. Therefore, when one or more of these are obtained, they must be handled with detachment and humility. For example, if one becomes quite wealthy, the precept to live spiritually detached from material things still remains. Thus, in this case, material wealth poses a certain burden in the form of temptation. While this temptation certainly can be overcome and wealth can be used for good, the danger is real and must be regularly acknowledged. Or, if you are praised by many for something you did, or if you are given much responsibility and authority over others, humility and detachment must also increase so that God and God alone remains the single object of your desire. Reflect, today, upon your desires. What do you want in life? Do you want to “gain the whole world?” Do you desire to gain even some of the worldly ambitions? If so, be careful. Reflect honestly upon your interior desires and work to purify them so that you desire God's will alone. Once that happens, it will not matter to you if you are rich or poor, publicly praised or criticized, entrusted with earthly power or not. All that will matter is that you use all for the glory of God, in accord with His perfect and fulfilling will. Most glorious God, Your will is perfect and is the one and only source of fulfillment in life. Please purify my soul of all desires pertaining only to this world. May my one and only desire in life be the fulfillment of Your holy will so that all I have will only be used for Your glory. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2024 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed. Featured Image: via pixabay

We just have to enjoy Christmas Day the best way we can when our family cannot get together for Christmas Day. I wrote this poem about my Christmas Day in 2019. I chose this Featured Image partly because of what is written on her coffee mug - 'Make today awesome.' Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. As we enter into this year's season of giving, I want to continue with the theme of giving. I originally published this poem earlier in the year titled You Are Rich, but I renamed it and I have added a verse to the end of the poem about some of the many free gifts that we can give away, which are of great value. Originally, this poem only reflected inwardly reminding us of the value to ourselves of the wealth of our body. But I also wanted it to end by reflecting out toward others. I believe, one of the most valuable free gifts we can give away is a listening ear. Another valuable gift to give in this busy rushed time of the year is quality time.  I wrote this poem in 2020. I wrote it after reminiscing over a children's book titled How to be Rich by Michael Twinn 1993 that I read often to my daughters when they were young children and realised how appropriate the message was for adults as well!  I chose this Featured Image as it looks like the image is being reflected in a mirror and yet the eyes are looking outward through the layers of mirrors. This image reflects the theme of this poem that flows from self-reflection to looking outward to find opportunities to share our 'wealth' with others. Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. This poem, which I wrote in 2019, zooms in on the momentous, yet private moment in history when Mary was visited by God's angel and told of her imminent pregnancy of Jesus, the son of God. Her story is found in Luke Chapter 1 verses 26-38. Finally, the prophecy was to be fulfilled many thousands of years after God told the serpent in Genesis 3 verse 15, that through Eve's genealogy would be born a saviour who would conquer Satan. God's people had been waiting about 700 years for the prophecy of the birth of the Saviour named Immanuel, to be fulfilled. Why not listen to Parts 1-3 of this story poetry titled: Christmas in the Garden of Eden - The Christmas Story Part 1, 2nd November, Four Unusual Women - The Christmas Story Part 2, 9th November and 700BC - The Christmas Story Part 3, 16th November. When I found this Featured Image of a young woman looking down and touching her stomach, I imagined that the young Mary would have done this, following the visit from God's angel telling her she would soon be pregnant with the Saviour. She must have experienced a flood of emotions. Part 5 of this series looks at Mary's reaction to receiving this wonderful yet life-changing news from God's angel. This poem is Part 4 of 8 parts to the poetic script that follows the Christmas Story from the very beginning to end. Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. This poem is based on the prophecy found in Isaiah chapter 9 verses 1-7 which is dated about 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. This prophecy was made by the 8th century BC Israelite prophet, Isaiah. In this passage, Isaiah prophesied the future birth of the Saviour of the world. The name Isaiah means 'God Is Salvation.' The book of Isaiah bears his name. He was a prophet during the reign of kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah between 759-697 BC. He also warned the kings of pending doom unless they ruled as faithful kings to God. Isaiah was married with two sons. The Book of Isaiah is quoted many times in the New Testament following the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, confirming the fulfilment of these events. I chose this Featured Image of binoculars looking toward the future (horizon). Can you see the cross that I inserted in the sunset? The writing on the binoculars reads 'turn to clear vision'. I thought, how appropriate! We turn toward Jesus, God's Son, and put our faith in what He has done for us, for Jesus is the light of the world, warming our hearts with hope. Throughout the last 2000+ years of history, Christians have had a clear vision of hope for the future, thanks to the privilege of having God's Word the Bible to read and understand. Many people still do not have the privilege of having the Bible in their mother tongue language. Let us pray that with today's technology, that this goal can soon be achieved. This poem is Part 3 of 8 parts to the poetic script that follows the Christmas Story from the very beginning to end. I will be publishing one of the Christmas poems each week leading up to Christmas week. I wrote this Christmas script for a Christmas Service that we held at the local church, that I was attending at the time, in 2019. In between each poem, being recited by a small group of children and adults, we sang Christmas songs as a singing group, and the whole congregation sang Christmas Carols relevant to that part of the story. Why not listen to the other parts of this poetry series: Christmas in the Garden of Eden - The Christmas Story Part 1, 2nd November, Four Unusual Women - The Christmas Story Part 2, 9th November and Mary - The Christmas Story Part 4, 23rd November. Thank you for listening. I hope you are enjoying the history of the Christmas story. The Story Behind the Poem - Four Unusual Women, The Christmas Story Part 2

Hi, I'm Beverley Joy of Simply Story Poetry. This is the story behind the poem titled Four Unusual Women - The Christmas Story Part 2. This Christian poem is Part 2 of my Christmas Story. It is based on Matthew Chapter 1 verses 3-6 in which four women are mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus. It is a brief overview of these women who had troubled or scandalous life stories. It seems unusual for God to have chosen them to be included in the ancestry of the future Saviour of the world. The second last verse of this poem refers to 1 Corinthians 1:27-28 'but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.' I was so pleased to find this image of a woman with a veiled face as this poem's Featured Image. I didn't want a photograph of a particular middle eastern woman. I searched for an image that would represent all four women in the poem. I love the artist's choice of colours which gives the image a modern appeal, which I feel connects these ancient women with modern women, as both groups of women have experienced similar troubles or scandals in their lives. I love the sheer soft effect of the veil across her face. Her eyes are not weary or sad, brash or harsh, instead, they reflect composed victory, which is how each women's story ends. Image link at the end of the poem on my website Simply Story Poetry. This poem is Part 2 of 8 parts to the poetic script that follows the Christmas Story from the very beginning to end. I will be publishing one of the Christmas poems each week leading up to Christmas week. In between each poem, being recited by a small group of children and adults, we sang Christmas songs as a singing group, and the whole congregation sang Christmas Carols relevant to that part of the story. This week's spiritual pilgrimage takes us to 140 Rue du Bac, in the heart of Paris, France. Join Mary Jane Fox, as she takes us on a new journey to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal!  In this very chapel, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830 and instructed Catherine to have a medal struck after the model image that was presented to her. It was called the Medal of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in the beginning. However, as medals were distributed and worn by Christians; many conversions and even miracles occurred! For these reasons, the Medal came to be called the Miraculous Medal. During our journey, you will hear about: Mary's apparition in Paris and to whom she appeared The incorrupt body of St. Catherine Laboure How people have experienced miracles and graces related to the Miraculous Medal … much more! So you've uploaded a new featured image and published your awesome blog post, but there's one small problem, right? The beautiful featured image you've loaded in isn't showing on your blog page. In fact, some other, older image you posted as a featured image in a different blog post is showing in it's place! What's up with that? This is not random. There is a simple explanation for it. As I show in this video, you have named both images the same thing, resulting in an identical image URL in the media gallery. Your WordPress website is simply confused and is defaulting to the old one. 1. Fix it easily by simply renaming your original image to something different, preferably SEO friendly, and re-upload it in the featured image slot. 2. Delete the first one with the duplicate name. Keeping unnecessary, unused images in your media gallery will slow down your site speed load time, and over time, could negatively affect SEO. Hello WordPress Content Managers, Content Marketers and yes, that means you too Business Owners! Are you frustrated by the fact that Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other social media outlets don't always show the correct featured image when you embed/post a link from your WordPress website? Believe me, I've seen some get really messy. Don't worry, I've got the solution for you. First of all, all WordPress website pages and posts have something called the Featured Image. It's located on the far right hand side of the page, as my video explains. If your theme isn't having any issues showing the OG: Image tag (open graph image tag) to Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc., then your website should be showing exactly what you put in this featured image spot as the embedded image with your social media post. Also, as my video explains, it should be pulling the SEO Title and Meta Description from your Yoast SEO plug-in and showing that as the Title and Description of your post under your featured image as you make your post. If this isn't working, don't worry, the next thing to try is called the "Social" settings in Yoast SEO. As the video above walks you through, you can toggle over to the Social tab in Yoast, and try to put in a Facebook and Twitter Title, Description and Image. What this is trying to do is properly set the OG: image tag in the source code of your WordPress site, overriding the Featured Image setting. However, you may be watching / reading this because you already tried these things! Don't worry. I have a fix. Believe it or not, you need to create a Facebook App for your WordPress site. But it's super easy and quick. Just go into your Yoast SEO Social Settings and click the Facebook Tab. Then go to Developers.Facebook.com and create an app. The video walks you through this step. Once your website cache clears (typically 24 hours depending on which host you use, and faster if you use GoDaddy or WPEngine - each of which give you the ability to clear cache with one click from your WP Admin Dashboard), the OG:image settings should reset. You should then use both the Facebook Sharing Debugger Tool and the LinkedIn Post Inspector Tool to preview what your posts will look like as you embed links from your WordPress website into social media. Just like other updates to your site, it may take some time and refreshing to get the results you want, but once you've gone through this level of troubleshooting and fixed it, you shouldn't have to do it again. Special thanks to some great resources out there that helped me along the way: JOOBI.org and CompeteThemes.com. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support

When you step into your classroom each day, do you believe that all your students can succeed? Does this belief shape how you teach and engage your students in learning? On this episode of Critical Window (listen below) a podcast by the Alliance for Excellent Education (All4Ed), we spoke with Dr. Yvette Jackson, adjunct professor at Teacher’s College at Columbia University and senior scholar at the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education, about her concept of the “pedagogy of confidence.” Dr. Jackson, who has a book titled after this concept, is internationally recognized for her work applying neuroscience, gifted education, literacy, and cognitive mediation theory to elicit high intellectual performances from under-achieving and historically underserved students. A core concept of Dr. Jackson’s work is based on the idea that teachers should teach from a place of confidence in every students’ ability to learn, regardless of background or zip code. “When you have confidence about the potential of students, you help to push them to the outskirts, the limits of their mind,” explains Dr. Jackson on Critical Window. In this strategy, “learning becomes something that pulls [a student’s] potential to the next level.” What are the core ideas behind the “pedagogy of confidence,” and how can educators use this style of pedagogy to support adolescent learning? Here are six key strategies from Dr. Jackson: 1.Identify and activate student strengths. Instruction should help students believe “I can do this.” Teaching to students’ strengths helps them become more confident in their abilities and empowers them to perform better, all while establishing a growth mindset. 2. Focus on high intellectual performance. High intellectual performance should be the target for all students, not only those who have been identified for gifted and talented programs. Teach with the knowledge that all students are highly capable. 3. Build on existing skills and knowledge. Look at what students need to progress in their learning. What type of background knowledge do they need to have as a baseline and what additional skills do they need to build to succeed at the next level? 4. Situate learning in students’ lives. Are students seeing a connection between what you’re teaching and what’s happening in the world? Focus on issues and events happening in the world around them and incorporate those trends into the learning experience. 5. Acknowledge the impact of culture. Culture impacts the learning process and is a fundamental building block for students; however, it also can hold children back, even in school. If the school culture doesn’t represent the culture of the students, then you’re going to get all kinds of dysfunction. 6. Assess growth in every learning experience. Make every learning experience an opportunity for assessing growth. Receiving feedback on their performance and areas of growth helps students feel confident that they can progress in their learning. Feeling frustrated that your lesson plan isn’t resonating with your students? Before you throw it out, you should know that there may be more going on with your students than meets the eye. For students to learn, they must feel safe, engaged, connected, and supported in their classrooms and schools. But experiences like chronic stress or trauma from exposure to violence can have a tremendous impact on students’ ability to learn. Students that have been through at least four adverse childhood experiences, such as emotional abuse or neglect, sexual abuse, living with a drug-addicted family member, losing a parent to divorce or death, were 32 times more likely to have learning and behavior issues in school. Michael Lamb, executive director of the Washington, DC office of Turnaround for Children, shared this and other staggering data points on this episode of Critical Window, the Alliance for Excellent Education’s podcast exploring the rapid changes happening in the body and the brain during adolescence. The episode dives into how students experience trauma, the impact it has on mental health and learning, and what educators can do to create an environment that effectively supports students affected by trauma.   Breaking Down the Science of Trauma What happens inside a child’s brain when they encounter a traumatic experience? The amygdala, the area of the brain that acts as a “smoke signal” when individuals experience a stressful situation, takes over to activate a fight or flight response throughout the body. When this area is in charge, the other parts of the brain that manage learning and memory, including attention, self-regulation, executive function, etc., are inhibited. Lamb explains the importance of this natural human response to threats: it helps individuals react to potentially dangerous situations, and not spend time determining whether a threat is real or not. “It's wonderful if you're in the forest and you see a bear and you need to act,” says Lamb. “It's terrible in a classroom or a hallway.” “You could have a wonderful lesson plan as a teacher, you could have really great, engaging content, but if that child is feeling stress…then that long-term memory won't actually take root,” says Lamb. It’s not just about making the classroom a safe space with caring adult that students trust. The whole school must be involved to create a positive learning environment. “If a classroom felt like a safe, predictable place, but then the hallways were very chaotic, the cafeteria or the playground became a place where students were re-triggered…the rest of the day would be really difficult for learning to take root,” says Lamb. So, how can educators and school leaders create classroom communities that are calm, safe, and predictable, while also building positive school climate? Listen to this episode of Critical Window to find out. As a professor of human development in the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology at the University of Maryland, College Park, Dr. Kathryn Wentzel researches the nature of teacher-student relationships and how these relationships predict young adolescents' goal pursuit, prosocial behavior, and academic performance. On this episode of All4Ed’s podcast, Critical Window, Wentzel walks through the process of building positive student-teacher relationships and how it affects student engagement and learning. In the below excerpts from the episode, Wentzel explains that teachers can…   Capitalize on Collaboration “The more [teachers] are tuned in to the peer relationships in their classrooms, the better able they are to create a classroom climate where [students] can interact with their peers but also engage in good instructional activities. So the challenge is to enable students to interact with each other but also in structured contexts where they're able to learn.” Act as a Safe Haven for Adolescents “During middle school and high school, teachers have the ability to create safe environments for students, physically safe environments as well as emotionally safe. And this is very important for adolescents because, as supportive and friendly as peers can be, they can also be mean spirited. They can also create a lot of stress. And so, teachers need to continue to be there as a safe haven for adolescents.”   Model Good Relationships When a trusting relationship exists between students and their teachers, “students are willing to engage in things that the teachers would like them to.” “A positive relationship also allows teachers to model good relationships with others, and so these social and emotional skills are very valuable for kids to learn and to demonstrate with each other.” This results in positive social behavior in the classroom, including “being helpful, cooperating, sharing, being nice to each other, and engaging in positive social exchanges with others.”   Create an Engaging Classroom “If a student feels that a teacher cares about them, is going to be supportive of them as an individual, they're more likely to listen to the teacher, to engage in what the teacher wants them to. It [will] create a very calm, but at least an engaging classroom climate which allows everyone to learn more and better. It just creates a better climate for everybody to engage in the process of learning. And so there are academic benefits as well. The Leftscape

Despite the audio issues that gave Robin Renée and Mary McGinley a bit of an echo effect, this episode of The Leftscape is well worth an attentive listen. A listener letter from visual artist Melanie Sinclair (a longtime friend of Robin's) called out middle-class privilege in assumptions made about online activism in Episode 1. Wendy Sheridan takes the lead in acknowledging the work that is needed to recognize privilege and to make space to understand the circumstances of those who have less. Mary offers a glimpse of balancing life and political organizing time from her perspective. The discussion weaves through re-envisioning the value of online activism in various forms, considers other activist possibilities such as Resistbot and personal conversation as ideals when time and resources are limited, and reaches for a clearer expression of the co-hosts seeking their activism "personal best." News of the week focuses on the stories that produce a national/global gaslighting effect -- perhaps strong enough to send some of us running for our blanket forts, at least temporarily. A parallel is drawn between "I am not a crook" and the chorus of "No collusion." Fear: Trump in the Whitehouse by Bob Woodward (available September 11th, 2018) is added to the Leftscape reading list. Also on the list is This Dark Chest of Wonders: 40 Years of Stephen King's 'The Stand,' by Biff Bam Pop! publisher and Leftscape supporter, Andy Burns. Robin is encouraged by the popularity of "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" on the life of Fred Rogers.  By way of introduction, the week's signature mishmash of silly holidays and historical anniversaries include International Cat Day, Happy National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day (one of the co-hosts accomplished this weeks ahead of time), the first national march of the KKK in Washington, DC in 1925, and Nixon's announcement in 1974 that he would resign the presidency the next day at noon. Robin sends a Happy Birthday shout out to tennis champion Roger Federer. Featured Image: "Jailbait" by Melanie Sinclair, an artistic response to the many advances from men she experienced before she reached the age of consent. *This episode is sponsored by Harlequin and Other Fantasies, Meditative Coloring for Grown Ups. Use coupon code LEFTSCAPE at checkout for free shipping. (Offer good for the month of August 2018).     Try some eggplant "bacon," or substitute zucchini. In episode No. 9 of the Femin • Is series, I sat down with Cyncha Jeansonne who created the controversial 1976 exhibition Women in Glasses at the Douglas Drake Gallery. We talked about the rebellion required to be an artist and how this two-day installation of 15 nude women came to be. Featured Image is a detail from photographer Donald White's series of photographs of the exhibition. **CAUTION** Images below include nudity. Discretion is advised.   The debate on what qualifies as objectification of women's bodies versus body positivity and agency certainly isn't new even if some of the buzzwords are.  While the conversation on the censure of women's bodies continue today, the 1970s era of radical feminism certainly sparked some debates. Louisiana native and artist Cyncha Jeansonne played a part here in Kansas City with her two-day environmental installation at the Douglas Drake Gallery in 1976. While she tamps down on the idea of a feminist influence at the time, she asserts that the work was an act of rebellion, so it's almost impossible to see the installation without the historical lens of feminism. For another view on this installation, read  “Women in Glasses” – A Reminiscence by Doug Drake I could only get my hands on some lovely black and white prints of the exhibition, but you can see a color detail in the article above.

Well, after this past weekend, I realized what exactly “Stepping Out” was! You see, we know we need to get comfortable being uncomfortable, right? But how uncomfortable do we really get? Are we completely letting go and trusting ourselves or the safety features to be enough to protect us? What about criticism? Judgement? Looking a fool? The answer is, sometimes we need to be completely vulnerable and let go of any safety rails to allow ourselves to fly. (Picture taken from article: Telegraph) What if I told you that your chances of failing are huge? What if I told you that your failing is what is going to allow you to grow?
