We are circling back to check in with our Households of FI families. First up are Matt and Megan, our international, dual military couple. Having a military pension is like having multiple lottery tickets. You have both healthcare and an inflation-fighting pension, but how many of these lottery tickets do you need to really crush this game? Naval service is Doug Nordman's family business. In addition to his own 20 years of service in the Navy, his wife almost had 20 years of active duty service in the Navy before finishing her career in the Reserves. And then their daughter joined the Navy on an ROTC scholarship and married a Naval Officer. While dual-military couples are a small demographic that hasn't been extensively studied, Doug says even if they earn just one pension, they will likely have more money than they need for the rest of their lives just because of the pension and healthcare. Matt says the US military pension system is much more simple than for the UK's Royal Navy. He and Megan are working toward FI with their investments alone and consider the pensions to be an additional comfort. Matt has served for 11 years so far and the Royal Navy's systems provide a pension based on each year of service. Megan has been in the US Navy for 15 years after doing her first 10 years enlisted. She needs to fulfill 22 years before being eligible for retirement as a Naval Officer. Doug says when you're in the military with the opportunity to earn an active duty or Reserve pension, you have four lottery tickets and you only need to have one of them to pay off because you solve the healthcare problem and have an inflation-fighting life annuity with just one. If serving in the military is still challenging and fulfilling, stay in as long as you want, but when the fun stops, don't be afraid to leave. Don't fall for the military inferiority complex. Coming from the military you already have human capital. Employers can train you on the basic skills for a job, but they can't train a new employee on those soft skills earned in a military career. Co-locating as an international dual military couple has its challenges. Matt may soon be getting a medical discharge from the Royal Navy which will help solve that issue for him and Megan. Matt notes the US military provides spouses with opportunities for increasing human capital, like free courses or paying for college. Doug thinks obtaining certifications and licenses is going the help Matt find a job in the US more than an advanced degree because he's already proven that he can do things. Networking will be key. After having conversations with others about how he can fit in, what he can help them with, and what he knows how to do, he will make a shift to an abundance mindset. Megan notes that Doug lives in a high cost of living area. He says having a high savings rate on the path to FI, as well as frugality are what enables it. In most high cost of living cities, it's housing that is the biggest expense. After you figure that out, everything else falls into place. Doug and his wife bought crappy houses and put sweat equity into them before renting them out. They also eat local, optimize spending, and slow travel. Spending in the areas that provide the most value gives you margin. People who have been in the military have an appreciation for the line between frugality and deprivation. Frugality is optimizing your spending. The transition is scary and stressful, but statistics show that within two years of getting out and starting a civilian career, half of all veterans change jobs. It's not because they can't hack it, it's because they have figured out how to get more money, get a better job, or move to a better location. They've cracked the code in a corporate environment. Megan is torn with her TSP. She doesn't know if she should go traditional or Roth. Doug says that, anecdotally, in the military where a third of your compensation is not taxed, you are probably in the lowest tax bracket of your life so all investments now should probably be Roth TSP or Roth IRA. If doing all Roth contributions doesn't sit well with you, split the difference and do half and half. Roth's weren't available when Doug was active duty and he spent time doing Roth conversions for his and his wife's accounts. In the first full year after retirement, your income probably goes down a little bit and would be a good time to look at converting a little bit and then chipping away at each year. Doug believes the job offers will come following military retirement. He had offers but for him, it was always about the drawbacks to the offer than the good things they offered. If he were looking today, he would look for remote work where he could dictate his schedule to remove all the drawbacks. He advises Matt and Megan to go build their own career, to their own quality of life, and not to feel constrained to themselves into anyone else's idea of how their working years should be. While Doug gutted out his 20 years of service, his wife gave up 20 years' worth of pension for quality of life. Even so, he says he overshot the finish line by about $1 million. If he could buy back eight years of active duty with that extra money, he would. Megan wondered if Tricare covers military retirees who live abroad. Doug confirms that it does, noting that it's called Tricare Overseas on the Tricare website. He and his wife get all of their dental care done when they travel overseas and in Bangkok, they get their routine physicals. He thinks the healthcare advantages are much more valuable than the pension boost from an additional year or two of working. In addition to questions about how to teach kids about financial independence, Doug is often asked about the sustainability of financial independence. After living it for 18 years, he can confirm assure people that the money will last. It's a good idea to stay flexible. Chances are after retirement you won't be doing one thing for the next four or five decades. Instead consider it a series of five to ten, or even three to five-year increments. Having the security of an inflation-adjusted life annuity takes the stress out of economic downturns. Doug and his wife went through the internet recession in 2002, the great recession of 2008, and watched their wealth compound over the last 18 years. During the coronavirus downturn, they made a large donation to the Hawaii foodbank and put money into their granddaughter's 529 account. Megan has heard that a high VA Disability rating can negatively impact the military pension. Doug says to make sure every medical problem is documented in your medical record. Once you leave active duty or reserves, the VA is going to do an assessment of your disability and award compensation. However, the law states that you can't have dual compensation. With a VA rating less than 50%, you give up some pension in exchange for VA disability compensation but the VA compensation is free from income tax. With a VA disability rating of 50% or higher, you are under a system of Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay (CRDP). With it, you get both the pension and VA disability compensation. With respect to the inflation-adjusted pension, Doug says that in 18 years, and with three years where the inflation rate was 0%, his pension has risen just over 40% while his spending has not gone up 40%. The certificates and licenses Doug talked about being more valuable than a degree are right in line with the Salesforce challenge discussed on Talent Stacker and ChoodeFI. Doug Williamson, an NRCHA Million Dollar Rider, is interviewed by Chris Dawson and Russell Dilday. Presented by Saddle House Custom Saddles & West Knives Doug Williamson has truly lived the Western dream life movies are made from. Born in the Southeast corner of Oregon, Doug was the oldest son of Sylvan and Barbara Williamson. Raised as a cowboy on the family ranch and riding a horse from the time he could crawl, Doug’s first victory came at the age of five while riding behind his Dad in a match race! Doug’s love for the racehorses grew and it wasn’t long before he was on the tracks, himself. He also participated in Western events, winning his first buckle at the age of 8 in hackamore reining. At thirteen he won his first buckle calf roping, then, a year later when his dad was seriously injured in a riding accident, Doug took over the duties of running the family ranch. Sylvan Williamson always had an eye for great horses and purchased one that would turn into one of the best horses Doug would every ride. His name was Baldy C. The horse could do anything and let Doug know what a truly great horse felt like. When Baldy C was 16 years old When Doug was 19, he rode Baldy C to become the high point working cow horse in the nation… a title they captured again two years later. At 17, Doug decided it was time to strike out on his own, and he secured a job as the cattle foreman for the Markham Cattle Company. While Doug was working on the ranches he always had outside horses in training, and he credits many of his skills to the old-timers he learned from. In the mid-sixties, he took a break from training full time and decided to rodeo for a living. On the road for about a decade, Doug calf roped, team roped and rode a few saddle broncs, winning prestigious events all over the West, including the Ellensburg Rodeo. In1978 Doug went back to training full time in Nampa, Idaho, and for 14 years he trained everything from halter horses and cow horses, to English equitation horses. He made over 30 AQHA Champions in many different events and ranks among the AQHA’s most successful trainers. In 1987 the world came crashing down on the Williamson family when Doug was diagnosed with cancer. He was near death in the hospital but still had his great horses on his mind. Doug pulled through cancer, and in classic fashion, was aboard Montana Lynx 7 months later, taking the reserve championship and winning over $20,000 at the Biggest Little Cutting In The World. In 1990 Doug was hired to help build the horse operation at the Tejon Ranch, so he packed up and headed to California. Being extremely busy he had sent his Dad on a buying trip to look for mares and studs for the ranch, and Doug had ended up with a little black yearling from the King Ranch that no one else wanted… he would turn into Doug’s first Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion. In 1992 Doug and Mr. San Olen captured the Open title, and since 1990 Doug has made the finals nearly every year. In two months, serial killers Douglas Clark and Carol M Bundy murdered at least 6 women. The pair would target young, underage prostitutes on the Sunset Strip in the 80s. While Doug received the full brunt of the law, Carol seems to have gotten off a bit easier. However, was she more involved than we were lead to believe? Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, episode #83. This is PART 2 of our last episode on “How Looking at Your Brain Can Change Your Life” with a deeper dive into what we learned from getting a SPECT Image Brain Scan at Dr. Amen’s Clinic in Costa Mesa, CA.For those who are new here, my name is Andrea Samadi, I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring awareness, ideas and strategies to our most pressing issues facing educators in the workplace, or parents working from home or in the corporate space, to keep us all working at our highest levels of productivity. The goal is to bring the most current brain research and practical neuroscience, connected to our social and emotional skills, to take our results to the next level.Last episode we did a case study of my friend Doug Sutton, whose whole life changed when he made the decision to get a SPECT image brain scan from Dr. Amen’s Clinics. While Doug was having some noticeable issues with his health, like brain fog and his energy levels, I made the decision to get the scan just to improve and optimize what we are already doing, as well as to see if there is anything they notice that we should be aware of now. When I was interviewing Dr. Shane Creado, episode 72 on “Sleep Strategies that Will Guarantee a Competitive Advantage” I wanted to know specific strategies that I could use to optimize my performance and results, and he suggested “why don’t you just go and get your brain scanned. This way, we can look at the results, and see exactly what type of brain you have, and he could make more targeted suggestions from there. Stay tuned for PART 3 of this Brain Scan Series where I will share my results, after I have had the chance to speak with Dr. Creado later next week. This is where the process began for my husband and I. Since I had posted about the fact we were going, I have received so many messages from friends asking “What did you learn? Why exactly did you go? How much did it cost? What was the test like? Does the test reveal a snapshot of your brain as it is today, or in general?” All of these are great questions, and the reason I figured I would break up the experience into parts. If you have considered getting a brain scan, and you are either like Doug, you’ve been noticing some symptoms (brain fog, maybe memory problems, low energy) and you want to look at the organ that controls pretty much everything that you do, and everything that you are, then this podcast episode series is for you. Or maybe you are like me, you don’t have any symptoms, but you just want to get an accurate snapshot of what is happening in your brain, so you can optimize your results, and at least know what’s going on with the most important organ in your body. So, here’s what I would recommend you do if you are thinking about it. Start with doing as much research as you can about Dr. Amen,[i] Amen Clinics[ii] and The Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast that he and his wife host, to hear from the many guests he interviews, showcasing different ways to put your brain health first.[iii] Dr. Amen, one of the most famous psychiatrists in the country, found that looking at the brain could tell you a lot about someone when treating them. Adding SPECT Imaging Brain Scans to psychiatry, took his practice to the next level. On his website, you will find all of the locations he has offices (east coast, west coast, and central locations like their Chicago office where Dr. Creado works out of). There’s a lot of free resources you can access, as you learn more about what issues you might be facing, thinking of solutions that he recommends. Once you have trust in his work, the decision to call and learn more about moving ahead with a brain scan is much easier. He has a wonderful overview of the process on how to read the scans called “Brain SPECT Imaging Made Ridiculously Simple”[iv] on his blog. In this overview you will learn:Why Dr. Amen started doing SPECT brain imaging in the first place. What a SPECT Scan (Single, Photon, Emission, Computed Tomography) looks like. What a healthy brain looks like (full, even, symmetrical activity) from even blood flow. (AMEN CLINICS photo of a healthy brain-even blood flow)What an unhealthy brain looks like, spotting signs of Alzheimer’s Disease ahead of time, so you can work on optimizing the brain.Alzheimer’s can be seen in the brain years before symptoms occur. Both sides of the brain are affected with decreases in the Parietal Lobe (top back part of your brain) and Temporal Lobes. What drugs or alcohol do to the brain? They damage the brain.Photo of a healthy brain, next to an addict's brain.6. What even a mild traumatic brain injury can do to the brain.7. How SPECT scans show evidence of trauma, toxins like mold or chemotherapy, or infections like Lyme disease. My friend Doug Sutton spoke about mold exposure that gave him brain fog, and he also mentioned that BulletProof Radio Dave Asprey also had mold exposure, and it was Dr. Amen who inspired him to create his BulletProof line of products.8. How SPECT scans can help people with mental health disorders and addictions. This drug education poster hangs in 100,000 schools. It’s a more realistic image of what drugs do to your brain than the image that I remember growing up of an egg cracking into a pan to represent a brain on drugs. It just doesn’t have the same impact as this poster does, or real brains that were damaged by drugs/alcohol use. What the scan tells us? Good activity, (blood flow) Too little activity, Too much activity. Then Dr. Amen and his team can balance the brain with supplements, and strategies. The difference between a surface view of the brain, and active view (inside) the brain. If you want to see a more humorous overview of the SPECT scan, actress and comedian Laura Clery covers her SPECT scan from start to finish.[v] I’m usually a pretty serious person, especially when it comes to getting my brain scanned, so this overview of a very serious topic, was hilarious to watch. Actress Laura Clery was having some problems with her memory and wanted to look and see if there was anything they would find out with this scan. She admits that she is a former drug user and hoping that the damage she did in her early years is reversible, which we have heard Dr. Amen say when he says “You’re not stuck with the brain you have.” It is possible to improve brain structure and function. She walks you through the experience from start to finish, not missing a detail, of finding the clinic, to the IV injection of Saratech that maps out your brain, to the test where you have to click the space bar when you see a letter, and not click the bar when you see an “x” which was more difficult than it sounds, (my husband said this test drove him crazy and it looks like Laura had a similar experience). She also takes you through the actual brain scan where she was told to lay still, but she moved, and had to do the entire scan over again. The Brain Scan ProcessIt’s interesting that everyone asks the brain scan technician “what did you see” after the scan, and he/she will tell you “wait until you speak with the doctor.” Once your scan is complete, you will have the opportunity to discuss the results with a doctor. I chose Dr. Creado from the Chicago offices to do my evaluation, since he was the one who recommended I take the test in the first place, so I won’t be able to record PART 3 of this episode with the results until the end of next week. Brain Scan Predictions Based on My Understanding of the BrainI do have some predictions of what I think we will see, based on studying Dr. Amen’s work for the past year, and applying what I am learning to my own life. You can do the same, especially if you take his Thrive by 25 Online[vi] course. It will be interesting to see if my predictions are correct, but this is what I think we are going to see. With my brain scan, I think that I have what he considers a busy brain, or hyperfrontality where we can be over focused. He suggests that a way to improve this would be to prevent serotonin from going too low, or I will have problems, which I kind of figured out on my own over the years. He suggests to naturally increase serotonin through exercise, high protein foods and supplements. I already know that without exercise, I just don’t work well, because I need this boost in serotonin to work at my best. I also eat a high protein/higher fat diet which also works well for me. He also suggests taking supplements to calm the busy brain like 5 HTP or saffron, and I have been doing this for the past year. For my husband’s brain scan, I think that he will show hypofrontality, or lower frontal lobe activity, which is the opposite of mine. He talks all the time about having a shorter attention span, and wonders if he has ADHD. He did have a mild traumatic brain injury years ago, and he works best with scheduled exercise and a higher protein diet. It will be interesting to see if these predictions are correct after our evaluations.Until then, if this episode has made you think about your own brain, take some time to go to www.amenclinics.com and call the number on their website to learn more about how you could begin your pathway to a better brain and life. Spend some time doing some research, watch the video series listed in the show notes on Spect Imaging Made Simple and Tune into the Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast to dive deeper into learning new strategies to improve your brain and life, or take the Thrive by 25 online course and see if you can make connections between your brain, and behavior. We can always improve our brain, which will in turn improve our life, it’s just up to us to do this. See you next week with the results of my brain scan.RESOURCES:Neuroscience Meets SEL Podcast Episode #72 on "Sleep Strategies that will Guarantee a Competitive Advantage." with Dr. Shane Creado https://andreasamadi.podbean.com/e/dr-shane-creado-on-sleep-strategies-that-will-guarantee-a-competitive-advantage/ REFERENCES:[i] Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen and The Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast[ii] Amen Clinics www.amenclinics.com[iii] The Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast https://brainwarriorswaypodcast.com/[iv] Brain Spect Imaging Made Simple by Dr. Daniel Amen https://www.amenclinics.com/blog/brain-spect-made-ridiculously-simple-part-1/[v] Actress Laura Clery’s SPECT Scan Experience https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=755883174955398[vi] Thrive by 25 Online Course by Dr. Daniel Amen https://brainmd.com/brain-thrive-by-25
What even is gender? In this episode, we unpack our struggle with understanding gender identity and how that intersects with living in a world where gender presentation has a tremendous impact on our lived experience. While Doug has found himself asking, "what does it even mean to be a man?" Vanessa has found herself asking, "what kind of woman do I want to be?" How are these questions different? In what ways are they shaped by the genders we were assigned at birth and the social expectations placed upon us to conform to those genders? In this episode, we wrestle with questions ranging from romantic attraction to sexism to the gender binary to male-presenting privilege to the good old "nature vs nurture" debate, along with a few tangents thrown in for good measure. We hope you enjoy the episode! [TRIGGER WARNINGS: mental illness, gender dysphoria, sexism, mansplaining, transphobia, gaslighting, and bisexual erasure] Show Notes We kicked the episode off with a brief sidebar on Borderline Personality Disorder. Doug, again, recommended the TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to Vanessa--and she has since started watching! Even if you don't watch the entire series, the song "Diagnosis" from Season 3 is worth watching in its own right for anyone whose ever had trouble figuring out "what's wrong" with them in terms of their mental health issues. We talk briefly about the romantic/aromantic spectrum without really qualifying what this is. Here's a quick primer. Doug mentions that he identifies as agender and, more specifically, demiguy. Doug refers to a podcast in which someone says something akin to "if you don't know what romance is, that probably means your aromantic." That's from this episode of the AOK Podcast. The quote Doug reads about the "cisgender/transgender binary" is from Transgender History by Susan Stryker. The quote Doug reads about the "gender landscape" is from Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe. The YouTube video Vanessa mentions by Alayna Joy is called "The wedding is off. | Coming out again." Talking about feminism and cultural tropes, Vanessa mentions the YouTube channel The Take and Doug mentions the YouTube channel Feminist Frequency. Our Blog Things quiz for this week was "What Kind of Fabric Are You?" This episode was recorded on May 28, 2020.
Doug is back with another episode. He starts off the episode by getting back into his R&B before he broke down Nelly vs. Ludacris on Instagram live, and he introduces a new segment where he shares a story about his college graduation. The song that he broke down has been on a journey throughout the music business. While Doug breaks down this song he shows another side of vulnerability, and it get's pretty dark. Doug is CEO and he is a particularly gifted visionary, organizational builder and developer of staff culture. Our church is a partner and beneficiary of TSF and I have seen up close, Doug’s values imbued into every team member of TSF. I was excited to talk to both Doug and Julie together. While Doug is the official and upfront leader, Julie is a force of nature bringing balance and wisdom to the ministry.
While Doug and his Equestrian match weren't a match made in podcast heaven, he's RETURNED to the studio to see if sparks fly with Unsolicited Advice podcast host, Taryne! Kendall navigates these two through a creature battle, a lively game of categories, and some pretty intense Questions You'd Never Want to Ask On A First Date (tm) like "Why are you still single?" and "What are the important rules for a first date?" This week Danny is joined by Doug Watts Jr, a new investor born and raised in Austin, Texas. His story starts out as a commercial general contractor where he stayed for 10 years as a field engineer and later superintendent. Like many of us, he was drawn in by the freedom that real estate investing can give you and he dove straight into educating himself and taking action to get started! Doug actually completed 2 flips while working full time, making a profit of $63,000 on the first and $109,000 on the second. Just 6 months ago, he decided to take his investing business full-time, and has since listed 2 houses for sale that he flipped (that’s a projected profit of $50,000 in his first 6 months working for himself. In this episode, Doug also shares a cautionary tale of sorts that anyone should be looking out for, about the importance of making sure that every box is checked when it comes to your business. While Doug may not be your typical, “House Flipping Guru,” he is determined to make it happen for him and his family and his resilience is something to be admired. His open-book take on both his successes and his mistakes allows us to see what a new investor actually looks like, as well as take a look at the internal struggle of being afraid to lose all of your money, but also knowing that it takes spending money to make money.
Meet Doug Winter, founder and CEO of Seismic, an enterprise SaaS tool for sales enablement that’s been around for 8 years. It helps sales and marketing teams work together more effectively and efficiently as it relates to sales cycles. Thanks to our friends at Cox Business for their support of this episode. While Doug grew up in Ohio, he went to Virginia Tech and studied electrical and mechanical engineering. After college, he took a job with Westinghouse in their Navy Nuclear program training sailors on running the nuclear machinery on boats at sea. It was a great leadership experience as he was given a lot of responsibility quickly but decided to go back to school - for a degree in Leaders for Manufacturing at MIT, a combo of business and engineering with an eye towards operations. His last winter there was ‘the worst winter in Boston’ and he asked ‘how far away from this can I get? Enter San Diego. Doug landed a job at Qualcomm in 1996. Qualcomm had just won the battle of CDMA and just started a division building their own phones and infrastructure. He took new products from engineering and was the bridge to put them into production. He had great bosses and mentors at Qualcomm but kept hearing about the Dot Com buzz and knew that he’d eventually leave Qualcomm and become an entrepreneur. His dad was an entrepreneur and Doug saw how happy his dad was doing this kind of work and it stuck with him. Doug rode through the Dot Com boom and bust and tells some sentimental stories that paint a graphic picture of the times. It was exciting for him to sit front row and ride the rollercoaster of starting a company and was a valuable learning experience. Over the next decade, Doug started another company, Objectiva. Objectiva was hired to rebuild Document Science’s product line. Great relationships were formed from this partnership and Document Sciences ended up buying Objectiva and Doug became COO of Document Sciences, which was then bought by EMC. EMC had also bought Carlsbad-based Captiva. Very quickly he realized that the big company culture wasn’t for him so worked through a transition to leave, but observed that the existing tools for content management were clunky and nobody was doing a real SaaS business around content development. The problems they saw at Document Sciences were real and thought they could do what Salesforce and Workday - taking CRM/HRM and consumerized it and put in on the cloud. Nobody was doing this for content management and they set out to fill this void. Enter Seismic in 2010 to solve this problem. The first office was a basement in an apartment building in downtown Encinitas. By the time they left they had about 12-14 people working there so it was quite cozy. Through all the growth they’ve remained in North County, to Solana Beach and now residing in Del Mar Heights. One of SD’s challenges is how wide-spread out everything is so they’ve tried to stay central for their employees. One of the founders, Ed Callan, is born and raised in Boston. Started an office in Boston in an addict and really grew as a two-office company from the very beginning and both offices are about the same size. They recently acquired a business in Chicago - their competitor Savo - and now have a foothold in that major hub. Curious where the term sales enablement came from? Listen in! Two years ago they acquired local Email Co-pilot which brought in expertise on data and AI. Listen how Doug explains the capital environment and where Seismic is headed in the next few years. A great later stage San Diego story that has plenty more to write. Doug would love to continue to grow here and put SD on the map as would we all. Some of Doug’s local food favorites - Tacos - Sara’s in Mission Beach. Coffee - Coffee Coffee and Pannikin in Leucadia. Beer - A fan of Green Flash Follow Doug on social: Twitter LinkedIn

Welcome to Episode 19 of the Front Office Exchange podcast, featuring Doug Warf, Carolina Hurricanes Vice President of Marketing and Executive Director of its Kids 'N Community Foundation. Doug and I got to know each other by running in many of the same sports business circles back in Raleigh, and he continues to be one of the most well-respected executives - not just in sports, but overall - in the Triangle-area of North Carolina. He's been with the Hurricanes for 15 years, almost his entire career, so he has seen the ups - a Stanley Cup championship - and the downs - two lockouts, under-performing seasons, etc. While Doug doesn't have the perspective of some I've had on previous podcasts who have bounced between multiple stops over the course of their careers, its his perseverance and what he's learned through the years and aforementioned bumps in the road with the Canes which make his story unique. It was also refreshing to hear how passionate he is about his work in the community through the team's foundation and how important it was to him to keep that Executive Director responsibility even after he was promoted out of community relations and into his current VP role. Big thanks both to Doug and to you for listening.
