It had been a very long time since I had spoken to a choral conductor and I think I made the perfect choice to interview. Nigel Short was a joy to chat with and what an interesting career journey he has had! We talked about the difficulties of recording sessions, I discovered how a skiing trip changed his career path completely, and we have a good chuckle over one particular word that has a very different meaning on either side of the Atlantic! An epic and spiritual adventure for choir, Joby Talbot's Path of Miracles captures the hope, the expectation and the moments of overwhelm (both positive and negative) of travellers on the ancient and still popular pilgrimage trail the Camino de Santiago (Way of St James). Simon Clark, scientist, author and singer joins me to share his passion for the piece and guide us on a journey of musical and maybe spiritual fulfilment! Listening time: podcast 24 mins, music 62' Music here on Youtube, Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon. f you like to see your singers in action, there's a live concert video performance on Youtube here. We are joined this week by a legend of British chess, GM Jonathan Speelman! Jonathan is a three- time British champion, a two-time World Championship Candidate an author, Chessbase.com columnist, and a trainer. He has been ranked as high as #4 in the world in 1989 and has worked as a second for GMs Viktor Korchnoi, Vishy Anand and Nigel Short. As you might imagine, such a wealth of chess experience gives Jonathan an endless array of stories and a great perspective on what differentiates top players. Jonathan considers questions such as these: Why does he consider Ivanchuk the most talented player he has ever encountered? Could Anand potentially have beaten Kasparov in 1993? Could Jonathan have been World Champion? Does he regret pursuing chess after studying mathematics at Oxford? It was quite an honor to hear GM Speelman's modest reflections on a brilliant career. The eleventh episode of the Chicken Chess Club by GMs Jan Gustafsson, Laurent Fressinet & Peter Heine Nielsen. https://linktr.ee/chickenchessclub The FIDE Candidates rumbles on and after 9 rounds, Ian Nepomniachtchi is the man to beat. He's a full point ahead of Fabiano Caruana with Ding Liren & Hikaru Nakamura trailing on 50%. There's a lot to discuss at the Candidates from Nepo's impressive performance to Rapport's risk-taking. "What are you going to fix in FIDE this week, Peter?" continues to provide few answers on what Peter will fix. This week Emil Sutovsky was challenged to a debate and there will now be an epic battle to find a suitable date. Nigel Short has resigned as VP of FIDE and has gone to war with (one of) the US Virgin Islands Federation. Dvorkovich has a new website and was recently interviewed for chess24 but have we learned anything new? We end on Chickens of the Week, with a special birthday chicken!

In Episode 202, I converse with Grandmaster James Plaskett, Former British Chess Champion, a strong player, author and Who Wants to be a Millioniare? winner, live from the 2022 National After-School Association Convention in Las Vegas. He recently published a new book Bread and The Circus about his experience playing on the show. Vicepræsident for det internationale skakforbund, Nigel Short, tweetede forleden, da den norske verdensmester Magnus Carlsen spillede: “Oh wow! Magnus Carlsen got testicles!”.

In Milestone Episode 125, I have the absolute honor of conversing with Grandmaster Nigel David Short, an English chess grandmaster, columnist, coach, commentator and, since October 2018, Vice-President of FIDE. Short earned the Grandmaster title at the age of 19, and was ranked third in the world by FIDE from January 1988 to July 1989. In 2002, he beat Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov in a match, qualifying him to play in the World Champion against Garry Kasparov in 2003. We speak about his experiences playing tournaments in 129 countries, FIDE's support for the resume to OTB chesss, his upbringing as a chess player, the influence of the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match, his relationship with Mickey Adams and other top British players, his matches against Karpov and Kasparov, his favorite tournament victory, a preview to his upcoming book, the theory of the Advanced Caro Kann, ideas for time management, mental preparation, a book recommendation, fixed vs growth mindset, his tenure as FIDE Vice President and more.
As chess fans may have heard, legendary GM Lubomir “Lubosh” Kavalek passed away this week at the age of 77. GM Kavalek was a fierce, attacking player, who at his rating peak, was a top 10 player in the world. He was two-time winner of the Czechoslovak National Championship, and after emigrating from Czechoslovakia, he went on to become US National Champion three times as well. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to interview GM Kavalek, but Fred Wilson has given me permission to share with you all a long audio interview that he did with GM Kavalek. The interview took place on September 10, 2003. In this conversation, they cover many of the highlights of GM Kavalek’s illustrious career as a player, trainer, and author. They discuss Kavalek’s beginnings in chess, and his work helping with the World Championship matches of Bobby Fischer (against Spassky in 1972), and assisting GM Nigel Short against Kasparov in 1993. In listening to this interview, I was struck by the wit and personality of GM Kavalek. You can read on for brief timestamps, but of course you should listen to the entire interview with this chess legend! 02:45- GM Lubomir Kavalek discusses his beginnings in the chess world,, and his experiences with some of the other great Czech and US players of his generation. 17:00- What chess books influenced Lubosh? 23:30- He talks about working as the second of Nigel Short in the 1990s. 53:00- Question from Alex Baburin. Did chess help him adapt when he immigrated to Virginia? 58:00- What was his most pleasant and worst tournament? 1:02:15- What are his thoughts on quick draws? 1:10:00- How to optimize one’s time in preparation for a tournament? 1:11:00- Are there any plans for a book about his best games? 1:22:00- What was it like to play against Bobby Fischer? 1:24:00- What was GM Kavalek’s role in working with Fischer in the 1972 World Championship Match against GM Boris Spassky? Heidi Thomas is a screenwriter and playwright best known for Call the Midwife. The BBC TV series, which began in 2012, was originally a six part adaptation of a trilogy of memoirs by Jennifer Worth, recalling her experiences as a midwife in the East End of London. It was an immediate hit, with 10 million viewers a week, becoming one of BBC One’s most popular dramas and a fixture in the Christmas schedules. Born in 1962, Heidi Thomas grew up as the eldest of three children in the leafy suburbs of Liverpool. Her father ran a drain cleaning business while her mother looked after the children, including Heidi’s youngest brother David, who was born with Down’s Syndrome. Heidi studied English at Liverpool University, supporting herself by selling ladies’ underwear at a department store. During a bout of viral hepatitis, which left her unable to apply for jobs when she graduated, she entered a competition for new plays and won a prize for her debut, All Flesh is Grass. During the production,of her next play, Shamrocks and Crocodiles, she met the actor Stephen McGann. They went on to marry, and many years later Stephen was cast as the GP in Call the Midwife. After nearly a decade in the theatre, Heidi made the leap into television, first writing on existing series such as Soldier, Soldier and Doctor Finlay. Her other screenwriting credits include Lilies, based on her grandmother’s recollections, and adaptations of classic novels including Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford, Noel Streatfeild’s Ballet Shoes and Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Summer substitute Macauley Peterson takes another turn on the mic, this time close to home with a sort of guided oral history by ChessBase co-founder Frederic Friedel. Frederic tells stories of meeting Garry Kasparov, Nigel Short, Viswanathan Anand and many others for the first time, and later hosting them at his home in a suburb of Hamburg. There may be something in the water there because it seems like practically every World Champion and challenger since Kasparov has spent time with the Friedels over the past 35 years. You'll learn how ChessBase came to be, how Vladimir Kramnik felt about an early version of Fritz, what endgame kept Peter Leko up at night, which Leonard Barden book Frederic keeps in arms reach, and much more. Picking up on the theme of FIDE politics from the last episode, ChessBase Editor-in-Chief Macauley Peterson also spoke with IM Malcolm Pein while attending the first stop on the Grand Chess Tour in Leuven, Belgium. Macauley and Malcolm discuss the GCT 2018, which is continuing with more rapid and blitz in Paris, before turning to issues related to the FIDE election. Malcolm weighs in on the FIDE / Agon proposed "broadcast policy," the upcoming World Championship in London, why he joined the Makropoulos team, the impact of the pending RCF nomination of Arkady Dvorkovich, whether the election will be free and fair, and of course his old friend Nigel Short. Perpetual Chess makes a "zwischenzug" over to Europe where Macauley Peterson, Editor-in-Chief of ChessBase.com, is filling in for Ben this week. Macauley caught up with Grandmaster Nigel Short in Leuven, Belgium, at the close of the first tournament of the Grand Chess Tour 2018, the "Your Next Move Rapid and Blitz" tournament, where Short was a commentator. The former World Championship challenger is still an active player, but in May he launched a bid to succeed Kirsan Ilyumzhinov as President of FIDE, the World Chess Federation. Shortly before the interview, news broke that in addition to FIDE's current Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos, who declared his candidacy in April, a new candidate from Russia was entering the race: Arkady Dvorkovich, a prominent figure in Russian chess circles who currently serves as Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the FIFA 2018 World Cup, and has deep Kremlin ties, as a former Deputy Prime Minister. Short explains why he's in the race, what's wrong with FIDE, and how he intends to fix it. Tenebrae conductor Nigel Short tells Gramophone why the music written for Holy Week has such extraordinary power
One of the most famous king walk games in chess came from the encounter between Nigel Short and Jan Timman in 1991. How would Short reply when Timman opts for the atypical Alekhine's Defense? Could an enemy queen scare the king off his path? What conditions would be necessary for the king walk to be a success during an atypical phase of the game?

Chris Bowlby looks at the 22-year old Norwegian chess player Magnus Carlsen. He has the highest rating in the world ever and has been called the Mozart of chess. He is currently in London playing the tournament that will determine which top player gets to challenge the reigning world champion, Vishy Anand, for that title. Carlsen has been amazing the world of chess since he was a child. He became a Grandmaster after just four years of playing, when he was thirteen.
