Shadow IT and Its Security Risks - Managing the Unseen

Cloud computing is beneficial. Many organizations already know this and are reaping the benefits cloud adoption has brought them: reduced IT costs, scalability, collaboration efficiency and, above all else, flexibility in accessing storage and software to meet their needs. Users can now more easily engage services and solutions that will make their everyday jobs easier. That flexibility, however, is a double-edged sword. And you might be wondering how it can possibly be a bad thing, especially when it makes everyone work more efficiently. The thing is, many of those solutions and software your employees gain access to aren't under the governance of your IT department. While IT usually enforces policies that dictate the software, hardware and other resources used within the organization, with oversight regarding how they're used, the introduction of cloud computing means users can much more easily access resources they need with limited visibility from IT. So yes, using these resources can improve productivity, but their introduction without the governance and approval of an organization's IT department can lead to numerous security risks, data loss, non-compliance and exponential growth of the attack surface. What is shadow IT? When something is in a shadow, you don't know what it is. You don't know if it's malicious or completely harmless. How can you even begin to handle and manage something for which you have no overview? Well, your organization's IT has its own shadow. It's appropriately named "shadow IT". Shadow IT is the use of systems, devices, software, apps and services without approval from an organization's IT department. Most users who employ unauthorized solutions don't do it with any ill intention but to be more productive at their job. Shadow IT can include: Hardware and physical devices - smartphones, tablets, IoT, flash drives, external drives. SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, and other cloud services - productivity apps, messaging apps, cloud storage. Data repositories such as spreadsheets with internal data. APIs. VPNs. Commercial off-the-shelf software. Shadow IT is not all bad, though. While some may view it as a potentially dangerous nuisance that needs to be addressed and prevented, others see it as an innovation-driver and the natural manifestation of an ever-changing business environment's constant need to catch up. No matter what your stance on shadow IT, it's here and it's staying. Why is shadow IT so prevalent? If there are employees in an organization, there is shadow IT. Statistics show that 80% of end users use unapproved software and services. There was a time, under the shadow IT umbrella, when we saw a lot of software that impatient employees had downloaded and used, but it wasn't as prevalent as all of today's packaged software nor as easy to engage. Definitely not as easy as a click of a button, which the adoption of the cloud has introduced. Shadow IT now includes personal technology and devices employees bring in, which is propagated with remote work and BYOB policies. Rapid growth of the business landscape has increased the need for additional applications that can make employees' daily tasks easier and more efficient. With numerous businesses, productivity, storage, automation and other applications available in the cloud, they drive innovation, productivity and efficiency. It's easy to see why they're so enticing and why employees don't hesitate to download and employ these apps. Some corporate solutions might not only be incompatible with users' devices, they might also be slower, outdated and less effective. Combine this with the often long and tiring process of seeking approval from an IT department, and we can begin to see why shadow IT is continuously growing. One thing is certain: shadow IT is inevitable, so it wouldn't be fruitful to "fight it", but to understand its risks and the appropriate way to manage it. Risks associated with shadow IT There are numerous cybersecurity risks associated w...

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started last year, privacy has been in the spotlight, becoming an even more important priority, both for individuals and companies. European citizens and businesses have had to radically realign their lives to the new reality. While IT teams struggled with the data security and privacy challenge of a sudden migration to remote working, politicians grappled with how and whether to maintain privacy safeguards as data was shared for contact tracing and medical research. Following the introduction of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2016 and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the pace of adoption of modernised data protection laws has accelerated across the world. Regardless of their country, customers and companies across the globe demand a consistent high-level of protection. In the years to come, data protection laws will continue to evolve, as will data privacy. The international flow of data will be more than ever at the heart of the discussions. Data privacy laws provide important safeguards and consumer protections but overlapping compliance and data localisation pressures raise many questions and have led to political tensions. The next phase in Europe’s privacy agenda is taking shape with the release of updated standard contractual clauses (SCCs), a proposed UK adequacy decision and transatlantic talks on the successor to Privacy Shield.

Nifty witnessed some minor pullback with rollover moves, but the last week's lows of 12,730 acted as a strong support to aid a sharp recovery in the second half of the session. The index closed near 13,000 on November 26. Nifty gained 11 percent while Bank Nifty outperformed, gaining nearly 23 percent for the November F&O series. Among sectors, metals, realty, auto and energy indices gained 26.8 percent, 13.9 percent, 11.7 percent and 11.1 percent, respectively, While IT, pharma and FMCG gained 5 percent for the November series. The December derivatives series is 5-week long and we expect volatility to increase if India VIX crosses 23 levels on the higher side. Investors should reallocate their portfolios to defensive sectors and hedge their portfolios doing bear spread or long put butterfly strategies as we are trading at an all-time high with sharp outperformance over the last 2 months. The Midcap index continues to be at an inflection point and it may outperform the broader indices.

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Leah: Hi Dr. Cabral. An overall background about me. I live and breath a healthy lifestyle (and love it - no deprivation here;)). I exercise daily, always walking... living off a clean, mostly plant-based, no highly processed foods + organic diet (well-balanced macros + micros), dry brush, tongue scrape... the works. I'm not tooting my own horn but rather give you a general picture of my lifestyle. One thing I can honestly agree is that my stress levels and anxiety are my biggest battle. About a year ago I have been finding myself at this burnout state. Feeling nauseous, weak (in bed) and fluelike symptoms, which happened about once or twice every other month (give or take). After reading your book (the rain barrel effect) It all made sense to me how I got to this state over a long period of time, even though everything else was right, the toxins (stress) just overflowed. My question is this:I did the FM detox, and while I see many amazing results from family and friends who did it with me, I didn't see or feel major changes. I didn't go down on the scale or react in any way. I try to implement meditation and overall calming rituals to balance my stress levels. I haven't been in this burnout mode for a while, but then sure enough... this week I find myself back in this cycle (this time I also experienced indigestion issues). What other steps can you suggest (lab test + lifestyle changes, or supplements) that I should implement? Also, side note: While It isn't my main concern; I have been struggling with the last 5-10 lbs. Eating clean (not too much but definitely enough/ full) and moving around (16,000 steps daily average and strength training 4-5x /week) Would this stubborn fat be related to the stress and anxiety? Thanks again for the amazing messages and knowledge you share with us all. You have impacted my life in ways you can't imagine. I really appreciate the time and effort you give. All the best, Leah. Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral. I am starting to incorporate organ meat into my diet and was wondering if there is a limit to how much I should eat? It is all grass fed and finished and comes from a local farmer. Also I have been listening to a podcast with a doctor who eats carnivore and he eats his meat raw. I have since looked into this and have seen many people online who do this. I am not considering this but out of interest, what are your thoughts on eating meat (organ, muscle etc) raw? As always thank you for your response. Melissa: Hello I am so thrilled to have found you earlier this year! I am binge listening to your Podcast and have heard you talk about genetic testing. I was wondering if you continue to recommend testing and which brand you recommend? Seems like I remember something about teleomere testing! I love learning from you and would love to know half of what you have learned! Jenny: Hi Dr. Cabral! Thanks for all the amazing information you share with us daily, for free. I listen to your podcasts to and from work everyday and it's made my commute seem "worth it." Question about genetic predispositions. My mother has battled (and won) 2 breast cancer battles. She is BRCA1+ as are my sister and I. I chose preventative, risk reducing surgery to lower my breast cancer risk which I feel really great about especially because my sister just finished her breast cancer battle. We also have a 54% risk of ovarian cancer with this mutation. I know you said we can change or maybe turn on/off our genetic predispositions. I'm currently 37 and am not ready to start a family. My gynecological oncologist is pushing fallopian tube/ovary removal to lower my risk of this awful cancer (known well as the silent killer) but I'm not ready. What are your thoughts and advice you have on this topic if this was, say your sister or daughter in this position? I appreciate everything you do and are trying to do! I hope to join the IHP level 1 one day as I love learning. Why Enthusiasm and Storytelling are Crucial in Postdoc Research, with Dr. Sarah Chobot Hokanson - Ep #18

What would you say are the most important aspects of postdoc research? Would the learning environment or the availability of mentors rank high on your list? What about the role of passion and enthusiasm for your field of study? Dr. Sarah Chobot Hokanson joins Mark in this episode of When Science Speaks to highlight the role of enthusiasm and storytelling in postdoc research. Sarah is the Assistant Provost of Professional Development and Postdoctoral Affairs at Boston University. She is responsible for providing services and programming for all postdoc scholars at Boston University, as well as supporting the development of University policies related to postdoc scholarships. Before joining Boston University, Sarah was the US Deputy Director of Science and Innovation at the British Consulate-General, Boston. Dr. Hokanson holds a BA in Chemistry from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed a National Institute of Health (NIH) Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral Fellowship at Cornell University in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of When Science Speaks [1:08] Mark introduces his guest, Dr. Sarah Chobot Hokanson. [3:50] What sparked Sarah’s interest in science? [7:30] Sarah talks about taking a position working for the British Consulate. [12:00] What is the Postdoc Academy? [15:00] How Sarah and her team create programs that appeal to postdoc researchers. Connect with Sarah Chobot Hokanson Postdocacademy[at]gmail.com Sch1[at]bu.edu Sarah on LinkedIn Sarah on Twitter Resources & People Mentioned National Postdoctoral Association Don’t fake it, pursue what energizes you Have you ever found yourself stuck listening to someone who is dispassionate about their work? The experience tends to be incredibly dull and ultimately a waste of time. While It’s not fair to expect every researcher to come out with the most stunning and captivating presentation, a lack of passion and enthusiasm speaks volumes. What is the solution? Should you fake excitement for something that you don’t care about? Most people are ill-equipped to take a topic they care nothing about and make it sound interesting. Don’t try to fake enthusiasm; your audience will see it coming from a mile away. If you find yourself in a field of study that you don’t care about, make a change as soon as possible. Not only will you benefit from switching to a subject that you care about, but those on the receiving end of your research will also benefit. If you are stuck, consider reaching out to your mentor or peers and utilize the network you’ve built to make a change. Why storytelling is crucial to communicating your research Storytelling is an often neglected aspect of postdoc research. Even the phrase, “Storytelling” seems foreign in a world of facts, figures, and data. What does storytelling have to do with postdoc studies? It all comes down to effectively conveying your findings. If you can’t tell a compelling story with the data you’ve collected, you need to look at it from a different perspective. Your research will only have the desired effect if you present it in a way that connects with your target audience. Are you presenting your findings to your peers? If so, you can get away with a lot of lingo and jargon, but you still need to make a compelling case. Are you presenting to an audience outside your field of study? If that’s the case, you’ve got to find a way to connect your research to something they can understand. You don’t have to abandon your data and figures, you must make them relevant to your audience. This aspect of your research will come more naturally if you are engaged and invested in your subject matter. ABOUT TODAY’S SHOW: The Chalene Show is brought to you by The SmartLife™ PUSH Journal is an all-in-one life planner designed to help you become a highly productive, balanced, goal-crushing machine. www.smartlifepushjournal.com   “I think you two are co-dependent” once said a wise therapist. Bret and I stared back at her in disbelief and denial. This episode of the Chalene Show includes an unscripted and honest conversation between my husband Bret and I, recapping a recent weekend apart. This is significant because not too many years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamed of suggesting we spend the weekend apart. Today, we are in a better place, our relationship is so much healthier. Healthy relationships take work! I always feel a little weird when I post something in social media and see that well meaning fans have replied with comments like,  #RelationshipGoals or “I wish my relationship was like yours”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to know that people see the relationship that I have with my husband and business partner Bret as inspirational, but I also feel a sense of obligation. I feel a sense of responsibility to share the true work and progress that has gone into this relationship. While it’s helpful to have relationship role models, it’s unhealthy to use someone else relationship as a measure of the success or potential that your relationship has. If you’re not getting along, if you struggle to communicate, argue, or just feel disconnected that doesn’t mean your relationship is doomed, it might simply mean you need to seek outside help. In this episode, Bret and I talk about how early behaviors in our relationship resulted in some pretty serious codependency patterns.   Codependency can take on many forms. When the term was first used to describe our relationship, I was very defensive. I took to the internet to read up on what it meant to be in an unhealthy relationship. It was easy to find definitions that didn’t seem to fit. But there are degrees of codependency and before long I realized that being defensive about the label, wasn’t going to help us. Growth is something we should all seek. Growth makes us better. When we are better as individuals or better as a couple, we make the world a better place. We experience greater happiness and fulfillment when we work on being better humans. And yes, growth can be uncomfortable, even painful at times, but it always results in improvement. Embrace growth. Growth is what courageous people do. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can’t possibly be an expert at everything. Allow a trained individual to help you navigate this process. While friends and family are important sources of support, they are not trained to help you navigate the experiences of your past and help you to process these things. You and your partner need time together and time apart. You need to be your own autonomous person with your own interests, friends and pursuits. While It’s incredibly beneficial to share these things as a couple, it’s equally important to have things that are just for you. Your happiness and or emotional state should never be defined or determined by the mood, actions, affection or behaviors of your partner. A healthy individual doesn’t need the approval, assistance, support or love of someone else to feel whole. While it’s human nature to desire these things, they should never define you or make you feel differently about who you are or your significance. Codependence can take on many forms and can reveal itself in varying degrees, the worst of which can lead to dangerous and destructive patterns. Instead of dismissing the notion, consider speaking to a trained professional and seek the counsel of those trained to help you be a better you!! Thanks for listening!
