Since stepping down from the “day to day” of running Mendocino Farms, a premium fast-casual gourmet sandwich and salad concept that she co-founded in 2005, Ellen Chen has focused her time, energy, and passion on investing in female and minority-founded businesses. Ellen is leveraging her twenty years of experience growing food brands to help early-stage founders understand their purpose, operationalize their values, secure the necessary resources, and hopefully avoid some of the mistakes she made. In 2015, Nation's Restaurant News included her on their annual Power List, and in 2020, Nation's Restaurant News named her the 50 most influential women in food service. She sits on the Boards of Directors of Mendocino Farms, Sugared + Bronzed, and HomeState, as well as an Advisor to Curbit, Womaness, Kirra, and Vibrant Funds. Ellen strongly believes in giving back to her community. She serves as a Board Member of Teach AAPI and AAPI LA, an initiative launched by the Mayor's office in Los Angeles. In today's episode, Nada sits down with Ellen to discuss the success of “Mendo” and their 75 locations. Ellen explains how her vision of creating a team culture served as the foundation on which she and her husband, Mario, built their thriving business. They discuss the challenges of managing busy schedules and the strategic decisions she made as a working mother. Ellen also shares some of the challenges she faced by not having the type of support she needed and now offers to female founders. To find out more about Mendocino Farms, check out their website. When Texas native Briana Valdez moved to Los Angeles, she had a hard time finding restaurants that reminded her of home, with Tex-Mex-style tacos and Southern hospitality. So, after years of working with famed chef Thomas Keller at Bouchon, and having been mentored by P.F. Chang’s founder Paul Fleming, Valdez claimed that whitespace and opened the first location of HomeState. The concept is now known for its community vibes and Texan classics like breakfast tacos, Texas toast, and Frito pie, writes Joanna Fantozzi in her feature on HomeState for nrn.com. That’s why we named HomeState one of our 2022 Hot Concepts, an award given out to companies that we think are set to take off. In years past, we’ve named concepts to this list including The Cheesecake Factory, Panda Express, Noodles & Company, Jamba Juice, True Food Kitchen, CAVA, and Bareburger over the 25-year span of the award and they’ve clearly risen to the occasion. On this episode of #SoLA, Camille and Charlie are slipping deeper into delusion, putting the X back in XMas, drinking boozy eggnog from HomeState and slowly falling apart. Charlie is pitching new podcast ideas and dates for Camille. Camille is still obsessing over minor flaws in the Star Wars and Back to the Future universes. Most importantly, they realize that #SoLA was merely a coping mechanism to make it through the Trump era. And Charlie just discovered Buzzfeed and explains to everyone the ins and outs of the Mandela Affect… which begs the question, Frasier, did this podcast ever exist at all? Merry Christmas!
In this very special episode we kick off the tour for our new book, Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music. Our friends at L.A.’s premiere cookbook shop Now Serving graciously hosted a panel featuring us and Andy and Briana Valdez of HomeState, moderated by Esquire’s Food & Drink Editor, Jeff Gordinier. The Valdez sisters contributed to the book, and even gave us their mom’s Peanut Butter Chicken recipe, and Jeff wrote one of the book’s forewords, so it was a total Snacky Tunes pals hang. We all caught up via Zoom, talked about the book and swapped stories about our love of music and food. Snacky Tunes: Music is the Main Ingredient, Chefs and Their Music (Phaidon), is now on shelves at bookstores around the world. It features 77 of the world’s top chefs who share personal stories of how music has been an important, integral force in their lives. The chefs also give personal recipes and curated playlists too. It’s an anthology of memories, meals and mixtapes. Pick up your copy by ordering directly from Phaidon, or by visiting your local independent bookstore. Visit our site, www.snackytunes.com for more info and tour dates.Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
On today's show we talk all about unlikely pairs that will make you want to cheer or vomit. Later a Chic-fil-A worker was fired after sharing some Chic-fil-a secret menu items. Finally, we are joined by Briana Valdez from Homestate for the Margarita Showdown.
Pop Punk Is Alive and thriving in Australia and one band who is leading the pack at the moment is Syndey's Stand Atlantic who are on the verge of releasing their new album Pink Elephant on Friday through Hopeless Records so naturally, we had to get frontwoman Bonnie Fraser on the show to chat about it. A true pioneer for being yourself, Bonnie's hilarious antics online shine through her personality but also she takes time to reflect on the more personal side of her life which she shares through her strong, metaphorical (yet hard-hitting) lyrical content, something the band have nailed on this new release. Podcast host Browny and Bonnie, both members of the LGBTI community, also share a moment to offer insights to their personal life in hiding (back in the day) and serve up some helpful advice for those struggling with their sexuality, identity and hilariously remind you that there's nothing wrong with who you want to bone! We've also enlisted the help of Wall of Sound's resident pop punk expert Tamara May to bring you a plethora of upcoming and established bands flying the flag for new age pop punk from Australia and around the world. Featuring bands like Yours Truly, Grenade Jumper, Neck Deep, Sleep On It, Homestate, Paperweight, Hot Milk and heaps more... See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.
On this episode of #SoLA, Charlie and Camille are Zoom chatting with their good friend Rob Huebel. Huebel recently abandoned city life to move to a different part of the city, aka the boonies of Pasadena (only 15 minutes away!). They discuss the running free commercial for HomeState that #soLA has become, as well as how bad Camille and Charlie are at hosting a podcast. Charlie and Rob also discuss their Academy Award winning show Do You Wanna See a Dead Body, as well as Charlie’s lost sketch from Rob’s show Human Giant. There’s some Southern talk, some pandemic What’s the Point talk, lots of talk about moving out of urban blight and are we maybe moving to Pasadena?
Snacky Tunes’ Los Angeles contingency is fueled by breakfast tacos from Tex-Mex champion, HomeState. Since the coronavirus pandemic hit HomeState has made the transition from full-service restaurant to general store, and has also launched a meal program to support hospital workers. HomeState owner Briana Valdez shares with us her plan to adapt, survive and thrive in these challenging and difficult times. Singer-songwriter Alex Rose landed in L.A. from NYC a few years ago. A longtime pal of the show, she now performs as Canyon Counterpoint, and joins us to share some new music inspired by life in the City of Angels, including the latest single, “Crescent Heights.”Snacky Tunes is powered by Simplecast.
On this episode of #SoLA, Camille and Charlie realize their last pandemic episode was TOO good and push further into quarantine insanity to discuss their New Normal, er, New Nermal? Harold Team Names are still free for now…. except one terrible one that cannot be uttered out loud. (Balloon, that’s all we’re saying.) They do puzzles now. They shop at HomeState. Charlie is still failing at Southwest Airlines humor. And Garfield was right about a few things: Mondays suck, Nermal sucks. Orson sucks. Turns out Camille cares a LOT about Garfield. Maybe SHE is the Garfield Purist. Yep, he’s still alive. What IS this podcast? WE DONT KNOW.

In the first half of this week's Snacky Tunes, Darin Bresnitz sits down with Austin expat Briana Valdez, owner of HomeState, a Texas kitchen in Los Angeles. After the break, we have a live in-studio performance by The Undercover Dream Lovers, the solo project of Brooklyn based artist and producer Matt Koenig.
