The brand that gives back. Who Gives a Crap was THE hottest brand of 2020 because of its beauty, ethical business model, and quite frankly... necessity. The scalable, social toilet paper brand produces environmentally friendly paper and donates 50% of its profits to help build toilets in less developed countries.Simon Griffiths, Co-Founder, and CEO of Who Gives a Crap joins Niko Woischnik on the TOA OA podcast this week. Simon trialed career paths of engineering to banking before settling on a direct-to-consumer business to help the developing world.Simon and Niko discuss Who Gives a Crap's rise to the top shelf through word-of-mouth marketing and how half a million people were on their waitlist during the 2020 lockdown.Simon also reveals top entrepreneurial tips on acquiring new customers, why it's now easier to develop a brand but so much harder to scale, and how customer-focused brands will prevail.A rational and emotional love of a brand is needed when there is so much choice. Who Gives a Crap is no doubt a brand that can deliver on both.Looking to level up or enter a new field? Join TOA Klub for cohort-based learning. Here, in the United States, we use more toilet paper per capita than in any other country on the face of the earth. Although things are different in other parts of the world, in our society, we view toilet paper as a necessity because that is how we were trained in our culture, in our economy, and in our lives. Toilet paper was the first thing everyone stocked up on at the start of the pandemic. It is something that we know we need to use, but we think we have no replacement for it. I’m Marla, the Green Home Coach! Today, Tony Pratte, my occasional co-host, joins me on the show once again for another conversation in our series about climate change. Today, Tony and I are talking toilet paper! In this episode, we explain what goes into the toilet paper that we are literally flushing down the toilet. We also discuss what you can use as alternatives and why that matters.   Looking at our country as a whole When we look at our country as a whole, we are the most prosperous country with the largest economy. Yet, we are very wasteful. Use this, not that I got a flyer from my local natural grocery store explaining what we should and should not use. They list many different items, from laundry detergent, to grocery bags to weed killer, and they even list toothbrushes.  Alternatives to single-use products There are many alternatives for us to use rather than single-use products, where we tend to be the most wasteful. Most of us do not think of toilet paper in that category, however. Flushing forests We are literally flushing forests down the toilet so that we can use something a little softer to wipe ourselves. Recycled materials I have used recycled toilet paper for several years now because I feel that any time I can use a recycled material rather than virgin material, it is a good thing. It takes far less energy, water, and chemicals to make something from a recycled product, and you are also expanding the life of that product. Wood pulp All paper gets made from wood pulp. Different kinds of wood pulp get used in making the various types of paper.   Wood mills Wood mills have tons of scrap lying all over. One would assume that those scrap bits of wood get used for making paper, but that is not what happens. Making toilet paper Toilet paper is not only made from leftover bits and pieces of wood, but shockingly, 44% of the wood pulp used to make toilet paper comes from clear-cut native virgin-growth forests.  Planting trees Although many of those involved with forestry claim to plant a tree every time they cut one down, it will take many years for those trees to reach their full forest height. Those trees often get planted within a monoculture instead of in a diverse setting with active microbiomes like a forest. Everything in nature works in systems, including forests. So, when forests get ripped out for our convenience, there is a long-term pay-off. Using recycled paper for toilet paper Many of the resources used to make paper could get offset by using recycled paper to make toilet paper. FSC certified forests Forests that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified have been deemed to be sustainable and sustainably managed. Toilet paper made from virgin wood Paper made from virgin wood has longer fibers which give it a lot more life. Every time paper or wood gets recycled, the fibers become shorter. So it makes a lot of sense to use recycled paper to make toilet paper because it will get flushed down the toilet. Sewage plants Often, sewage plants make fertilizer from the sludge.  Bamboo Paper made from bamboo feels more like paper made from wood with longer fibers. So toilet paper made from bamboo will feel more comfortable to use. You need to know that the bamboo was responsibly sourced, however. Consumers As consumers, we tend to have a lot more power than we comprehend. We can use that power to vote with our pocketbooks and choose the products that we use with care.  Learning about alternatives Learn more and talk to people about what you have learned. We can all help each other by sharing what we have learned about alternative ways to do things.  Overall impact We need to understand that with every change of materials, there is an overall impact that we need to factor in. An ecosystem The whole globe is a massive system made up of smaller ecosystems. When one of them gets knocked out of balance, the system looks to correct and find balance. But that takes time. Tearing down forests Forests are massive carbon dioxide storage facilities and they play a huge role in balancing the climate of the natural world. All of that gets negatively affected when we tear the forests down. The habitats of many species of animals, birds, and insects get destroyed. Some indigenous people depend on forests for their livelihood. The natural world supports us The natural world matters. Your health, and that of your family and friends, is highly dependent on the health of the planet. So, we need to remember that the earth supports us and take care of it.  You can make a start, one roll of toilet paper at a time! The Megilat Esther states that the Jews celebrated their salvation by "Mishloach Manot Ish L’re’ehu," delivering dishes one to another. This is the source for the Misva to give Mishloach Manot on Purim. HOW MANY ITEMS:The Halacha requires giving two distinct items to one person. This is derived from the wording of the Pasuk. The word "Manot"-dishes is in the plural form, indicating two or more different dishes. Therefore, one may not give two portions of the same item.Even if both items were packaged together, they are considered separate. Although, the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909 in Torah Lishma, Parashat Tisaveh) ruled that each item must be in separate vessels, Hacham Ovadia ZT"L is lenient, in accordance with the majority of the Poskim and the accepted custom. WHAT CAN BE GIVEN:The Halacha requires that Mishloach Manot be comprised of food. It is not acceptable to give money or other valuables. Although, Hacham Ben Sion permitted giving a voucher to eat a meal in a restaurant, assuming that the recipient would eat two different dishes there on Purim. The food must be fit for consumption. Therefore, one does not fulfill the Misva by giving items with sub-standard Kashrut. If one gave candies to a diabetic, he fulfilled the Misva, because even though the recipient cannot eat them, he can pass them on to his children etc. WHO GIVES:Women are obligated to give Mishloach Manot. Modesty dictates that women should give to other women, whereas men should give only to men. Special caution is required that men should not give to unmarried women, to avoid an issue of Kidushin, i.e. the gift may have marital implications.Boys and Girls over the age of Bar and Bat Misva are also required to give Mishloach Manot. TO WHOM IS IT GIVEN:The word "L’ReEhu" in the source Pasuk is singular, indicating that one recipient is sufficient. The purpose of the Misva is to enhance the joy and brotherly spirit of the holiday. Therefore, the more people one gives to, the better. Since the reason for the Misva is to increase joy, Mishloach Manot may be given to any Jew, even if he is wealthy. In addition, it follows that one may not give the Mishloach Manot anonymously. If the recipient does not know the identity of the sender, the "Unity Effect" is not achieved. The Aruch Ha’shulhan (Rav Yechiel Michel Epstein of Nevarduk, 1829-1908)adds that the recipient must find out about the gift on Purim. If one left Mishloach Manot for someone who is away until after Purim, that recipient will not enjoy the gift on Purim. Therefore, one should call or text the recipient on Purim so that they are aware of the gift. WHEN:Mishloach Manot is a Misva on the day of Purim, preferably right after the morning Megila reading. If one gave at night, he has not fulfilled his obligation.

Simon launched the business in 2012 with a crowdfunding campaign where he live-streamed himself sitting on a toilet for 50 hours, which attracted global media attention and generated 2.5 million social media hits. Since launching, Who Gives A Crap has tripled in size year-on-year, largely relying on word-of-mouth to fuel its growth. This year they had an incredible 1000% spike in sales due to Covid-induced panic buying and have donated nearly $6 million to charities that provide access to clean water and sanitation in developing countries. I ask Simon how in many ways 2020 has been the perfect storm for Who Gives a Crap, in terms of the demand for the product, the fact that they're a direct to consumer business and that the company was set up to allow the team to work remotely, and how he has democratised philanthropy through his business. At the beginning of the pandemic, we all discovered that toilet paper is a product that we've taken for granted. But since 2012, Danny Alexander, Co-founder and CPO of Who Gives A Crap has unraveled the true potential of the stuff. From launch, Who Gives a Crap has had purpose built into their business. They donate half of all their profits to non-profit organizations that are working to improve access to hygiene, water and basic sanitation in developing countries. With a 1,100% increase in sales, that's totaling out to a staggering $4m donation this year.On top of that, the bulk of the toilet paper they sell is made from 100% recycled paper, and the rest is made from bamboo.Their witty toilet humor and playful patterns may not be what you'd expect from a brand so grounded in giving back, and that's exactly the idea. In this episode, Danny talks sourcing, branding, and scaling to meet the demands of a pandemic. You can find images and link on the Lumi Blog.

On the podcast today, we are speaking Simon Griffiths, the co-founder and CEO of Who Gives a Crap, a profit-for-purpose toilet paper company that uses 50% of its profits to build toilets in the developing world.  What we love about Simon and his company is that he cares about the 2.3 billion people of the world who don’t have access to a proper toilet. So much so, that he sat on a toilet for 52 hours to raise $50,000 in crowd-funding donations!! We'll chat to him about what it's like to sit on a toilet that long, the work they are doing in developing countries and and how they have gone gang busters throughout the covid 19 'panic buying'!
