Lexi struggled to ‘read' faces. She walked on her toes. She craved routine. She didn't like her food to touch on a plate, and she was sensitive to light and sound.  But, until she was 27, she didn't know she was autistic.  Lexi only took a test when - as a paramedic, grappling with erratic shifts and sleep disturbance - she sought help with anxiety and depression.  In this candid conversation with Olly, she considers the ‘trigger points' for her struggles, explains her support system, and reveals how adjustments have seen her progress in her career and romantic relationships. Content Warning: self-harm. Find out more about autism from the National Autistic Society — Elsewhere, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart investigates the intersection of eSports and motor racing. Can platforms like iRacing truly replicate the physics, design, and engineering of real-world cars? Why don't they use VR headsets? And how come more people don't know about Max Verstappen's gaming side-hustle? With the help of Paul Crawford, Head of eSports at Motorsport UK, and sim-racer Jonny Elliot, Ollie discovers how (relatively) affordable home simulators might produce the next Will Byron… — Meanwhile, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox - fresh from visiting Dennis Severs' house in Shoreditch - tackles a bearded listener's question of grooming… how can he minimise friction and tickles whilst going down on his wife? With the help of ‘Celebs Go Dating' sexpert Dr Tara, Alix considers the options - from flavoured lubes to beard oils - and explains why a German toy, Belou, might provide a viable alternative…  — Finally, our Record of the Month comes from the Isle of Wight's Lauran Hibberd, whose single ‘2nd Prettiest Girl (In The World)' is out now. — GET IN TOUCH If you have a letter for Olly, a question for Alix, a challenge for Ollie or want to share your story on our show, visit our website, HTTPS://MODERNMANN.CO.UK and fill out the Feedback form.  — THIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY… • Readly. Le but ? Elon Musk a besoin d'argent. Making small, meaningful changes over time is a hell of a lot more realistic than becoming a vegan, minimalist, zero-waste tree-hugger overnight. Where were you when you came up with the idea for your business? Simon Griffiths was sitting on a toilet when he had the idea for Who Gives A Crap, a subscription-based toilet paper brand that donates 50% of its profits to help build toilets in the developing world. Since they launched in 2012, they've sold more than 300 million rolls of toilet paper and donated more than 11 million Australian dollars - just over £6 million - to charity. They now have more than 200 employees spread across 7 countries selling into the USA, Europe and Australia. In September 2021 they raised over $40 million in their first fundraising round.  It's taken a lot to get to this point. They bootstrapped for the first 9 years and spent 3 years before that working on the product before launching. Simon didn't get paid for the first 18 months of trading.  What does it take to build a brand that actually tries to change the world? Is entrepreneurship really for everyone? And does Simon fold or scrunch his toilet paper?  Listen to find out. How does an ecommerce based, social business create a global movement of mindful consumers, provide sanitation facilities to impoverished communities, and do a crapload of good for the environment? All while giving away 50% of their profits. In episode 19 of The B-side, I speak to Vanessa Morrish, Head of Creative and Brand at ‘Who Gives A Crap' an Australian based toilet paper company that makes toilet paper rolls, that feature D&AD award winning designs made from forest friendly materials; either 100% recycled paper or bamboo. They donate fifty percent of all their profits towards building toilets and sanitation facilities for people in developing countries. Having just announced their most recent donation of $5.85 million.Vanessa and I talk about her experience in the advertising industry where she worked for some of the big agency networks on some of the worlds biggest brands. How her passion for the environment inspired her to start a side project called ‘Be An Unfucker' – a platform to encourage people to stop fucking up the planet by being more mindful consumers. And how this passion and her need for greater purpose led to a role where she could apply her creativity towards something she actually gave a shit about. We lift the lid on the ‘Who Gives a Crap' brand, the importance of their fun and non-preachy tone of voice, along with how she ensures everyone within the organisation helps shape the direction of the brand creatively. And we talk about some of the professional challenges she's faced due to COVID-19, like working remotely while leading an in-house team of creatives based in LA. Along with the struggles of maintaining a work-life balance, now the lines have blurred between home and the workspace.Vanessa is an incredibly humble, insightful, and super cool cat. Quietly fighting to improve the health of communities in need, and the environment, with a creative irreverence that I absolutely love.
