B2B marketers take themselves so seriously. A little more humor wouldn't hurt.Even if you're thinking, “I already use humor in my content,” we're going to convince you to ramp it up. Because today, we're looking to a company that spends about a third of its content just on humor. And despite having "wasted" content on humor, it's thanks to their booming sales that they've raised over $8.6 million to fund sanitation projects around the world. In this episode, we're talking about the eco-friendly toilet paper brand, Who Gives a Crap, with the help of special guest, Shannon Howard. Shannon is Director of Customer & Content Marketing at Intellum. Together, we talk about dedicating a third of your content to making your audience laugh, edutainment, paying attention to the details, and much more. So take a bathroom break then tune into this episode of Remarkable.About our guest, Shannon HowardShannon Howard is Director of Customer & Content Marketing at Intellum. She joined the company in March of 2023. Shannon is an experienced Customer Marketer who's had the unique experience of building an LMS, implementing and managing learning management platforms, creating curriculum and education strategy, and marketing customer education. She loves to share Customer Education best practices from this blended perspective. Prior to Intellum, she served as Customer Marketing Manager at PeopleGrove. She has also held marketing roles at companies like Crowdvocate, Litmus, and The Predictive Index. About IntellumIntellum is the learning management system powering the world's leading education programs. Intellum's scientific, data-driven approach is based on 20 years of industry experience, and the Intellum Platform includes all of the tools an organization needs to create, deploy, manage, track, and continuously improve highly personalized, engaging educational experiences. Large brands and fast-moving companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Twitter, BeyondTrust, Randstad, AT&T, Verizon, Mailchimp, and many others rely on Intellum to improve product utilization, customer retention, and revenue. About Who Gives a Crap Toilet PaperWho Gives a Crap Toilet Paper is a recycled toilet paper brand. They pride themselves on creating a product that's better for the environment, as it has no inks, dyes, glues, chlorine or artificial scents. Their products can be delivered or picked up in store. And most orders ship free (over $25). But most importantly, they come with a mission to spread toilet humor and make the world a better place. They use 50% of their profits to build toilets and fund sanitation projects in developing countries. That money goes to a non-profit called WaterAid, which helps people in those countries access clean water, sanitation and hygiene education. The company was started by Simon Griffiths, Danny Alexander, and Jehan Ratnatunga, who are engineers and product designers, in July 2012 after they found out that 2.4 billion people, or 40% of the global population, don't have access to a toilet. Now, according to their website, that number is down to 2 billion. So they started a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGogo and it took about 50 hours to meet their goal, and they raised over $50,000. They launched their first product in March 2013. Now they also offer paper towels and tissues. Each roll is also wrapped in recycled paper in color and playful prints for sanitation purposes. They've now raised over $13.3 million dollars (that's Australian dollars) or $8.6 million US dollars. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Who Gives a Crap Toilet Paper:Spend your time equally on creating content around product, impact, and humor. A third of the Who Gives a Crap blog is dedicated to bathroom humor. While that might seem like a lot of content that's not dedicated to marketing or making a sale, Shannon says, “In B2B, we forget that there's not a company on the other side of our marketing. There's a person and they have dreams and aspirations and they have things that they struggle with and they have a sense of humor. Everybody's been asked to do more with less. We just need something to break through the noise and give us a little reprieve. And I think humor does that.”Edutain your audience on your mission. Who Gives a Crap educates their audience on their mission to provide access to clean water and sanitation around the world, but they make it fun. Shannon says, “They're talking about deforestation. They're bringing things in that can be really heavy topics, but making them lighter. They do it in a way that's really organic and natural and funny.” Educate your audience on why what you do matters, and make it light, funny, natural and organic.Write like you talk. You've probably gone to a site where you have no idea what the business does, because the content is so dry and buzzword-heavy. Don't write like that. Act like you're explaining to a friend what you do and write it out. Shannon says, “This is something I try to think about for content when I'm writing for SEO. Okay, I'm writing for a search engine. But I'm also writing for humans. I can't write for search only, right? You need to write for real people who are going to read your content and give them a reason to want to read your content. If you can make it entertaining and maybe you're putting gifs in there or emojis, or you're breaking up the text, or you're giving some real life examples. Those are ways you don't maybe necessarily have to use humor. That's not part of your brand, but you can lighten it up a little bit.”Fit creative moments into the details. Every bit of real estate matters, whether it's on your blog, in an email, or on a piece of packaging. Shannon says, “If you have an autoresponder, an email signature, real estate on your website, on your social media, are you paying attention to those details? Are you personalizing them? Are you speaking to your customers there?” The details and the little bits of space are opportunities to personalize, to be creative, and to speak to your customers.Quotes*”Surprise and delight is a big part of B2C companies. But it's not something we always think about in B2B. We think about, like, what is the thing that is going to provide the most value? But then you think about something like loading screens. Or in Asana, when you check off a task that needs to be done, you get a little unicorn, yeti or otter that flies across the screen. So just things like that, where it's small, it doesn't add value. No one's buying it for the unicorn, but it's a way to surprise and delight your customers. And that does make a difference. I think we forget those little things can mean a lot more to people. They can be really impactful moments.” - Shannon Howard*”When it comes to brand voice, think about if you were to walk up to our brand at a party. What would they be like? Think about your brand and what would that brand look like personified in the real world.” - Shannon HowardTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Shannon Howard, Director of Customer & Content Marketing at Intellum[2:03] Why are we talking about Who Gives a Crap toilet paper?[3:57] What does Shannon's work at Intellum entail?[5:24] What is Who Gives a Crap toilet paper?[10:22] What makes Who Gives a Crap remarkable?[13:15] What are marketing lessons we can take away from Who Gives a Crap?[26:51] What is Shannon's content strategy at Intellum?[35:14] How does Shannon think about proving the ROI of content?LinksCheck out Who Gives a Crap Toilet PaperConnect with Shannon on LinkedInLearn more about IntellumAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Key highlights include 11 out of 32 samples showing over 1% copper equivalent (CuEq), with standout results of 23.92% CuEq. These findings from Garfield, located in a north-south copper-gold porphyry/skarn belt, show significant potential for a large-scale copper deposit. The results, which extend beyond the previously identified 1.8 km by 0.8 km 'High-Grade Zone', prompt Golden Metal to swiftly plan further exploration steps, guided by expert geochemist Simon Griffiths. CEO Oliver Friesen commends the project's rapid progress in potential value, with future exploration program details to be announced soon. Phil Carroll and Kevin Hornsby talk to Oliver after the company reports that exploration has identified large-scale copper deposits at its Garfield project. Building on discoveries announced in May 2023, the recent exploration highlighted two significant copper zones, "Power Line Zone" and "High-Grade Zone." Subsequent geochemical analysis by industry expert Simon Griffiths confirmed the potential for Garfield to host large-scale skarn and porphyry deposits. Particularly, the "High-Grade Zone" demonstrated evidence for both deposit types, making it a top exploration priority. Where were you when you came up with the idea for your business? Simon Griffiths was sitting on a toilet when he had the idea for Who Gives A Crap, a subscription-based toilet paper brand that donates 50% of its profits to help build toilets in the developing world. Since they launched in 2012, they've sold more than 300 million rolls of toilet paper and donated more than 11 million Australian dollars - just over £6 million - to charity. They now have more than 200 employees spread across 7 countries selling into the USA, Europe and Australia. In September 2021 they raised over $40 million in their first fundraising round.  It's taken a lot to get to this point. They bootstrapped for the first 9 years and spent 3 years before that working on the product before launching. Simon didn't get paid for the first 18 months of trading.  What does it take to build a brand that actually tries to change the world? Is entrepreneurship really for everyone? When the ‘why' is missing, often so is our motivation.  Something I've noticed about people who bounce back from adversity, is they tend to have a strong sense of purpose – and if they don't have one when that curveball hits, it sure prompts them to find it!  Take Who Give a Crap founder Simon Griffiths – when his body gave out and exhaustion hit, his passion to make others' lives better literally helped him get out of bed.  Or Meggie Palmer – she lived through an unfair situation in her own work life, and it's given her the motivation to help others fight for equal pay. And it's driven her towards success in her own life.  And Liz Broderick, whose purpose for justice was seeded when she was very young, developed her why by listening to thousands of women. That strong sense of fairness has sustained her throughout her whole career.  When things are challenging, it's useful to go right back to exactly why you're doing a project or trying a new approach.  +++  Curveball is a production of Deadset Studios. In July 2012, Simon, Jehan and Danny launched Who Gives A Crap with a crowdfunding campaign. Simon sat on the toilet in their draughty Australian warehouse and refused to move until they had raised enough pre-orders to start production. 50 hours and one cold bottom later, they'd raised over $50,000. The motivation to start Who Gives A Crap came when they learned that 2.4 billion people don't have access to a toilet. That's roughly 40% of the global population and means that around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That's almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes. So they donate 50% of their profits to build toilets. For two years, between 1573 and 1575, he made a trip through the Near east to search for new herbal medicines. When he returned, he published a book with new botanical descriptions for his herbarium, and he later wrote a travel book about his adventures. Here is an excerpt from Rauwolff's description of Tripoli in Lebanon: “The town of Tripoli is pretty large, full of people, and of good account, because of the great deposition of merchandises that are brought thither daily both by sea and land. It is situated in a pleasant country, near the promontory of the high mountain Libanus, in a great plain toward the sea-shore, where you may see an abundance of vineyards, and very fine gardens, enclosed with hedges for the most part, the hedges consisting chiefly of Rhamnus, Paliurus, Oxyacantha, Phillyrea, Lycium, Balaustium, Rubus, and little Palm-trees, that are low, and so sprout and spread themselves. In these gardens, as we came in, we found all sorts of salads and kitchen-herbs, such as Endive, Lettuce, Ruckoli, Asparagus, Celery,... Tarragon..., Cabbages, Cauliflowers, Turnips, Horseradishes, Carrots, of the greater sort of Fennel, Onions, Garlic, etc. And also fruit, as Water-melons, Melons, Gourds, Citruls, Melongena, Sesamum (by the natives called samsaim, the seeds whereof are very much used to strew upon their bread) and many more; but especially the Colocasia, which is very common there, and sold all the year long.... In great plenty there are citrons, lemons and oranges.... At Tripoli they have no want of water, for several rivers flow down from the mountains, and run partly through the town, and partly through the gardens, so that they want no water neither in the gardens nor in their houses.”   June 21, 1898  Today is the birthday of American botanist, naturalist, and author, Donald Culross Peattie. During his lifetime, Donald was regarded as the most read nature writer in America. He wrote about plants and nature. His book, Flowering Earth, was written for the layperson - explaining concepts like chlorophyll and protoplasm and specimens like algae and seaweeds. The Hartford Times said this about Peattie's Flowering Earth: "Peattie makes the story of botany and its pursuit as fascinating to the reader as it is to him, and the reading of it a delight." Over time, Peattie began to focus on trees. His popular books on North American trees include Trees You Want to Know (1934), The Road of a Naturalist (1941), American Heartwood (1949), A Natural History of Trees of Eastern and Central North America (1950), and A Natural History of Western Trees (1953). From his book American Heartwood, Donald wrote, “Wood, if you stop to think of it, has been man's best friend in the world. It held him in his cradle, went to war as the gunstock in his hand, was the frame of the bed he came to rejoicing, the log upon his hearth when he was cold, and will make him his last long home. It was the murmuring bough above his childhood play, and the roof over the first house he called his own. It is the page he is reading at this moment; it is the forest where he seeks sanctuary from a stony world.” Peattie's writing voice is friendly and lyrical. He wrote, "I have often started off on a walk in the state called mad-mad in the sense of sore-headed, or mad with tedium or confusion; I have set forth dull, null and even thoroughly discouraged. But I never came back in such a frame of mind, and I never met a human being whose humor was not the better for a walk." And he wrote, "All the great naturalists have been habitual walkers, for no laboratory, no book, car, train or plane takes the place of honest footwork for this calling, be it amateur's or professional's."   Unearthed Words She pulled up to the curb in front of number 115, a boxy house with a garden so neat that people sometimes slowed down to admire it. A pruned hedge guarded the profusion of roses that bloomed from spring to winter. Each of the roses had a name. Not the proper name of its variety, but Salvatore, Roberto, Rosina- each one planted in honor of their first communion. There were also roses that honored relatives in Italy whom Rosa had never met, and a few for people she didn't know - La Donna, a scarlet beauty, and a coral floribunda whose name she couldn't remember. The sturdy bush by the front step, covered in creamy-white blooms, was the Celesta, of course. A few feet away was the one Rosa, a six-year-old with a passion for Pepto-Bismol pink, had chosen for herself. Mamma had been so proud of her that day, beaming down like an angel from heaven. It was one of those memories Rosa cherished because it was so clear in her heart and mind. ― Susan Wiggs, American author of historical and contemporary romance novels, Summer by the Sea Grow That Garden Library Small Garden Design by Paul Bangay  This book came out in 2019. Ian has written short stories and novels for adults and a children's novel called The Daydreamer, which Anthony Browne illustrated. In 2012, he and his wife, the writer Annalena McAfee, bought a beautiful nine-acre dream property in the Cotswolds. One of their gardens features foxgloves and iris, lady's mantle, allium, and meadow rue. Ian's best-selling 2001 novel Atonement was made into a movie starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley in 2007. A passage from the book reads, “It made no sense, she knew, arranging flowers before the water was in — but there it was; she couldn't resist moving them around, and not everything people did could be in a correct, logical order, especially when they were alone.”   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. Simon Griffiths is the co-founder and head-honcho of “Who Gives a Crap” a sustainable and ethical toilet paper company that launched in 2013 when Simon sat on a toilet, non-stop for 50 straight hours live on a web stream - until he’d pre-sold all $50,000 worth of their initial order.Since then WGAC has tripled in size, but they still donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets in developing countries. In March 2020, Simon Griffiths was watching as toilet paper sold out across Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. Even as the CEO of toilet paper innovators Who Gives A Crap, he never imagined the same thing was about to happen in Australia, UK and the US. But on March 4th, things took a dramatic turn. As the great toilet paper wars broke out across supermarket aisles, sales rose by 30-40%. Who Gives A Crap sold out, with half a million buyers on their waitlist. The challenge excited Simon Griffiths, and over an eight week period the company pushed its systems to the absolute limit. So how did Griffiths keep his team motivated? Who Gives A Crap donates 50% of profits towards building toilets and providing sanitation to those in need, so Simon and his team knew this was their moment to shine. Having a purpose at the heart of the company propelled the team into action. As a remote-first organisation, Griffiths says focusing on autonomy, mastery and purpose, combined with clear goal-setting, can motivate a team to tackle anything. He set up the magazine ten years ago in response to the fact that Open Water Swimming was growing at a rate of knots, and ten years later his publication is going from strength to strength. We talk Africa, Google (you'll see) and how to keep rowers happy on the Thames. Enjoy...

Simon Griffiths is the co-founder and CEO of Who Gives a Crap, a toilet paper subscription startup that builds toilets in the developing world. Simon launched the business in 2012 with a crowdfunding campaign where he live-streamed himself sitting on a toilet for 50 hours, which attracted global media attention and generated 2.5 million social media hits. Since launching, Who Gives A Crap has tripled in size year-on-year, largely relying on word-of-mouth to fuel its growth. This year they had an incredible 1000% spike in sales due to Covid-induced panic buying and have donated nearly $6 million to charities that provide access to clean water and sanitation in developing countries. I ask Simon how in many ways 2020 has been the perfect storm for Who Gives a Crap, in terms of the demand for the product, the fact that they're a direct to consumer business and that the company was set up to allow the team to work remotely, and how he has democratised philanthropy through his business. Simon Griffiths is the Co-founder and CEO of Who Gives a Crap. People listening might not, until now, appreciate both the scale of the business and also the deep community impact it has had in the developing world, where Who Gives a Crap donates half of its profits to charity each year. From the humble idea that they could sell toilet paper online and deliver a great customer experience, all the while being at the forefront on consumer driven philanthropy, this is a Australian success story we should all be wonderfully proud of. This crowd funded, bootstrapped business has donated almost $9m to organisations focused on sanitisation and hygiene in the developing world, and it is this mission and purpose that shines right through out this conversation as well as every single decision that Simon and his team make. These are the stories that need to be told, these are stories that inspire me personally the most, and a story I hope I do justice. Beyond the social impact headlines, Simon and his team really have built a wonderful business - best in class direct-to-consumer metrics, cash flow positive on every new customer from their very first order. To be able to donate half your profit, you need to be profitable, and at its core, this is a story about the successful scaling of a global online business. Simon is a man who truly does give a crap about the 2.3 billion people of the world who don’t have access to a proper toilet. So passionate is he about development aid, he sat on a toilet for 50,000 hours to raise $50,000 in crowd-funding donations. Simon is the co-founder and CEO of Who Gives a Crap, a profit-for-purpose toilet paper company that uses 50% of its profits to build toilets in the developing world. It’s no wonder it has already expanded to the US and UK and is set to open in more locations globally. In 2011, Simon was recognised by The Age’s Melbourne Magazine as one of Melbourne’s Top 100 Most Influential People and in 2013 he was shortlisted for Young Australian of the Year. “To get the most out of life, I knew that I needed a career that was about more than just making money. At UWA I’ll be talking about how I’ve taken that premise and turned it into Who Gives A Crap – a direct-to-consumer toilet paper business that’s donated more than $2.5 million to help build toilets in the developing world. I’ll share what drives myself and our team, walk through some of our current strategy and end with the key lessons that we’ve learned in scaling up a global social business. Regardless of where you’re at in your career today you’ll come away with something that you can use – and plenty of laughs too!” This presentation was recorded at UWA CareerConnect.

Simon Griffiths is CEO and co-founder of Who-Gives-a-Crap, they make and sell toilet paper, but they’re having an impact that goes well beyond the product we see in bathrooms all over Australia. The company has a clearly defined purpose to bring the miracle of toilets to the 2.3 billion people all over the world who don’t have access to one. Despite the hilarious potential for puns, the toilet paper business is actually pretty perfect for the social enterprise model. Simon and his team give 50% of their profits to a range of charities that are working towards providing water and sanitation services, infrastructure and education to millions of people all over the world. As Simon explains, he wanted to find a way to raise money for worthwhile causes, but he wanted to find a way that was more sustainable than relying on donations and grants. At the same time it brings awareness of the issue right into our homes. And arguably into the smallest, and most intimate of rooms in our houses. With the colourful packaging telling a story, and reminding us how lucky we are to have a loo of our own. For all the links check out www.johntreadgold.com Enjoy!

Breakfast… The most important meal of the day, right? It's Sue's favourite, Ollie thinks it needs an injection of excitement and Holly never seems to remember to eat it at all. From there we move on to spices. Holly eulogises about cardamom and everyone in the studio tries to work out which ones they have in their kitchen cupboards. They also ponder over the fact that we import 83 million tons of spices a year, even though 40% of the UK don't cook international cuisine. Unfortunately, Gouri from Holy Llama Spice Drops, is stuck on a train on route to the studio, so we have thrown Simon Griffiths in the spotlight for this one even though he's been invited to the studio as a bit of a palm oil and nut expert.   Once he's told us about his favourite spices he takes us through the Meridian Foods story. They're probably most famous for their peanut butter but they make dozens and dozens of nut-based products. They've made a decision not to use any palm oil in their whole product range and Simon explains why it's so important to them. To finish off Ollie explains why tahini is no longer just for new Labour supporters and urges Simon to move peanut butter beyond "the toast moment"?!

Simon Griffiths (@simongriffiths) is a toilet paper merchant and Co-Founder at Who Gives A Crap. A little over five years ago, Simon sat on a toilet for 50 straight hours as a publicity stunt to raise awareness for their crowd funding campaign. The plan was to start a toilet paper company and it worked, far better than they ever thought possible! They raised $50,000 and the company that donates 50% of its profits to help solve sanitation problems in emerging countries was off the ground. It’s an incredible story…. We covered: the initial campaign that went viral and attracted 2.5 million social media hits why their sales spike over the holiday period the financial model they use to donate how they choose which organisations to support why he has chosen to follow the social entrepreneur model for building a business, and much, much more.   To find out more about Simon and his team or to order toilet paper, tissues or paper towel as I have and many others do, head to whogivesacrap.org. The guest on today's show, Simone Griffiths, who is the co-founder of Who Gives A Crap toilet paper, has been abundantly successful in raising over $1000,000 in donations and building toilets to those in need and in turn, contributing to the reduction of the (currently) estimated, 800 children who die a day from unsanitary toilet conditions in disadvantaged countries. It all began with Simone sitting on a toilet for 50 hours straight, to raise the cash for his (successful) Kickstarter campaign which funded the first production of toilet paper.  Simon and his team have massive hearts, using recycled materials for their paper, donating 50% of all profits which funnel into said donations and considers the economy, our environment and it's people every step along the production and distribution of their product.  Simon was recognised in The Age's Melbourne magazine as one of the top 100 influential people, and in 2013 he was shortlisted as Young Entrepreneur of the Year.  What fascinates me most about this world is the variety of ways in which people discover themselves and what it is that makes them feel alive. Some of us seem to understand ourselves from a really young age, and some of us need to explore 13 different jobs, 50 countries and 3 marriages before we get it. Simon is in my opinion, someone who falls into that first category - lucky bastard. In a nutshell we discuss: How to return to goals and find your ambition again after massive (perceived) failures What is Who Gives A Crap toilet paper, and how does the business work? The concept of consumer-driven philanthropy and how it is potentially a more effective way to make an impact How the Who Gives a Crap toilet paper brand was born The best advice for ensuring you're not going to fumble over your own ego What it means to be a social entrepreneur and the impact it has at a personal level, as well as professional The process of creating a video that ultimately resulted in Simon sitting on a toilet for 50 hours straight to raise funds via a Kickstarter campaign How standing out, creating memorable experiences and interrupting the industry doesn't happen overnight, but takes patience, persistence and planning   Why it's the attention to the often overlooked details in business every single step of the way that creates momentum and customer commitment How surprise, delight and weaving your persona into your business make for excellent marketing After our interview, I went through my notes and smiled as I saw a similar pattern in Simon as I do in so many of the people I get on the show. At our core, we know who we are and what it is we are capable of, even if we don't know it consciously. It just seems that some of us are better are having a go, being different and following that contribution pull that seems to be ingrained into our human hard wiring, and we eventually end up with our heads and our hearts aligned, resulting in  the world becoming a better place. Enjoy the episode and be sure to listen right through to the end where Simon shares his ultimate Dad advice that trumps most inspirational books on the shelves. Simon Griffiths sat down for what he believed in and, it turned out, parking it on a toilet was an epic marketing win for a good cause. Griffiths and the team behind Who Gives a Crap toilet paper employed a clever stunt in which they livestreamed their co-founder sitting on a toilet until they reached their crowdfunding goal, and it worked. The company gives half of its profits to charity to increase access to toilets and sanitation in developing countries. But it takes more than a good cause and a good marketing ploy to have a successful crowdfunding campaign. The team also relied on thorough preparation and consistent messaging to blow away their goal. Griffiths and his co-founder Jehan Ratnatunga did a first take on their video in January 2012, hoping to launch soon after. But they realized that it wasn’t quite what they wanted, so they went back and tried again, even taking the time to get advice from an ad firm in Melbourne. The video wasn’t the only thing they had to prepare. The team wanted to be sure that their campaign would be a coherent, quality whole, and if that meant delaying the launch so that they would have time to refine things, that was OK. “We thought we’d go live in February or March, and then it just kept on getting continuously pushed back, and then it wasn’t until July that the campaign did go live,” Griffiths says. They were only working on the campaign part-time during the preparation phase, and it ended up taking six months for all of their ideas to come together in a way that they were happy with. Preparing an effective campaign isn’t like heating up a microwave dinner. It’s more like cooking a multi-course feast. It takes time. In this episode you will learn: What makes your campaign newsworthy and why people should care How to make your campaign as shareable as possible Why the first 24 hours are the most important in any crowdfunding campaign Kickstarter or Indiegogo. How to pick the one that works for you How to keep your message consistent across every media channels & much more!
