On today's episode of the TFB Behind the Gun Podcast, I've brought on Chun to talk about the IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) 2022 World Shoot. IPSC is a shooting sport that everyone across the globe can participate in but is still not very well known to those outside of the competition sphere. IPSC takes a lot of inspiration from its close American-only counterpart the USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association). Apart from some technical differences between the two, both IPSC and USPSA pit shooting competitors against one another in a test of both accuracy and speed (referred to as hit factor). While USPSA only takes place up to a national level, IPSC World Shoot takes it a step further and occurs once every 4 years on the world stage. In essence, the IPSC is the gun equivalent of the Olympics. Today my guest Chun, who is an IPSC participant, tells us all about the competition, what kind of gear he uses, and what other potential competitors can expect to experience if they attend a world shoot outside of their home country. Please welcome Chun to the program!  Chun's YouTube Channel - This is where Chun posts all of his match content including his runs at every stage during the 2022 IPSC World Shoot.

This month we talked to Amanda Fisher and Laura Seitz; IPSC, USPSA and Steel Challenge competitive shooters. We'll talk about how they got into the sport, their success stories and maybe some flops and what they learned from them. Amanda Fisher Amanda Fisher is a competitive shooter from Alberta. IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) is what she predominately competes in but also dabbles in a bit of 3 gun, USPSA and Steel Challenge. Her love and interest of firearms began in 2015 when she shot her first pistol. To better understand the working of a handgun, she took the Black Badge course. This is a holster training course that is a prerequisite to shooting IPSC. Although Amanda had no interest in competing, she wanted her Black Badge certification so she competed in her first IPSC competition early 2016. Well, she was hooked and the rest is history. Right now, Amanda shoots a CZ Shadow 2 in the Production Division in IPSC but will be transitioning to the Standard Division in the near future. In 2018 Amanda successfully completed the Range Officer course and has RO'd several major matches Nationally. Her accomplishments have been a wonderful journey for her; currently she is the Top Production Division Lady in Alberta, Top Production Division Lady in Saskatchewan, the 5th place overall in Production Division in Alberta and the 5th Lady in the Production Division in Canada. With her strong finishes and her will to keep going forward, Amanda has recently been accepted to represent Alberta on the Alberta Gold Team at the Canadian Nationals 2022 and Canada at the IPSC World Shoot Championships in Thailand, November 2022. In preparation for the World Shoot, Amanda is loading a ton of ammunition and doing regular dry fire sessions for when the weather is better, and she can put her dry fire training to the test on the range and in provincial qualifying events. Laura Seitz Laura was first introduced to firearms when she was about 12 years old, by her Dad and her uncle. She loved it! However, there was a large gap in time that she didn't think about shooting. Time passed, she got older, went to school, pursued a career, participated in other sports and got married. One day at the end of 2019, out of the blue, her husband asked me what she thought of guns and she shared her childhood memories. This began an exciting and fun filled passion that she and her husband, Devon, share to this day. Laura's journey with shooting began again when she joined a Steel Challenge league night. It was so gratifying to hear that steel ring! Soon after, they both got their Black Badge and started going to as many International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC), United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) and Steel Challenge matches as they could. She shot both Alberta (AB) and Saskatchewan (SK) Provincials last year and then went on to the Canadian National Steel Challenge Championships. This led to an opportunity to write an article with a friend and competitor, Amanda Fisher, in the USPSA magazine published in 2021.

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast. I just got back from shoot ing the 2018 IPSC US Nationals at the Universal Shooting Academy and first off, I have to say this was an excellent match and thanks to Frank Garcia and Shannon Smith plus all the range officers for putting on the match.  This is a very important match as it serves as one of the qualifiers to be a part of the next World Shoot coming up in a couple years.  I believe it’s going to be in Thailand.  IPSC rules are different than USPSA rules which is the action pistol sports that I compete in.  I still feel that competition is the best way to get better at shooting.  But that leads me to today’s podcast. One of the big takeaways from the match was the constant negativity that I heard from other competitors.  Everyone would only talk about their misses or other screw ups.  How their time sucked, or they screwed up their stage plan.  Even worse when someone gave them a complement, that person would down play it and again bring up their mistakes.  Why can’t we focus on the positive?  What is this fascination with being a loser? I bring back on the show, Steve Anderson who is one of the top instructors who talks a lot about the mental game and the keys to being successful.  Steve has written three books on the subject and also has his own podcast, That Shooting Show, which discusses in detail, between Van Halen breaks, how we need to know what our level of participation is and define success.  Steve also has been on the Shooter’s Summit and I knew after hearing about all this misery…that I needed to discuss what we can do to change our mental programing.  Links mentioned in the show: http://www.andersonshooting.com/ http://shop.andersonshooting.com/Books/ Please SUBSCRIBE and leave a REVIEW

Welcome back to the Firearms Nation Podcast.  Imagine you start competing in the shooting sports about 4 years ago.  Imagine you decide to start shooting shotgun exclusively in competition.  Imagine you go to the IPSC World Shoot for Shotgun earlier this month and finally, imagine waking up on June 11th to find out your the World Champion.  Josh Froelich didn’t have to imagine any of this…he lived it. Josh always had a competitive gene in his body that made him play sports growing up.  In fact he supported himself and paid for college not by working at a fast food restaurant but by fighting professionally in MMA.  But something happened in 2014.  Josh decided he wanted to be better at shooting and went to his local IDPA match and the shooting gene kicked in.  Fast forward a second and it’s June 2018 where he’s standing on the podium in France representing his country as a gold medal winner in the Open Division. I get to talk to Josh about his journey and the World Shoot.  We also discuss the little things like how he won matches and how to shoot the dot in Open or Carry Optics, and of course..how to be fast (which is why you’re  in Open anyways). I found Josh to be down to Earth as most people from the Mid-West tend to be.  Hardworking, devoted and willing to get the job done with a bunch of practice.  Links mentioned in the episode: https://www.facebook.com/onlyshootopen/ Please SUBSCRIBE to the podcast! ..Join the Nation!

What is it like to be a world champion?  How much focus and dedication goes into performing at that level.  Could you do it?  Could you do it knowing this might be the last time you were able to go to a world championship? Most competitive shooters in action pistol or USPSA (if you live in the US) know my guest as one of the best production class (that's the somewhat stock guns) shooters.  Ben Stoeger has won 6 national championships (five of them back to back) but never took first on the world stage..until this year.  Ben achieved that goal but the win meant more to him.  Earlier this year he was diagnosed with cancer and had an operation to remove it.  Knowing that if it spread or reappeared he would never have the opportunity to get the world champion title.  Going into the World Shoot in France this year, Ben secretly kept that feeling to himself but he was under an extreme amount of pressure.  In this episode three takeaways from Ben are 1) what is it like to compete under enormous pressure?  2)  Why getting a sponsorship doesn't mean free stuff and 3) training in the environment where you'll be competing will give you an edge over other competitors. Ben has a reputation as a bad boy in USPSA but after knowing him and what he's been through he comes across as a knowledgeable instructor and champion. I'm very pleased to bring you my interview with Ben Stoeger…  Links mentioned in the podcast: Ben's Website for classes.    http://www.benstoeger.com/ Ben's Store.    http://benstoegerproshop.com/ Books and DVDs (affiliate) “Dry Fire Reloaded” http://amzn.to/2yjtnGc “Practical Pistol Reloaded” http://amzn.to/2g5s6bA “Skills and Drills” http://amzn.to/2yjclI0 “Practical Pistol Foundations” DVD http://amzn.to/2ye9XR3 “Training to Win” DVD http://amzn.to/2xCaBpK Also, Click here for the 2016 Shooter's Summit to get 23 of these kind of interviews with the top firearms instructors! shooterssummit.com And don't forget you can connect with Firearms Nation or just stop by and say hi on these social media links: Facebook  www.facebook.com/firearmsnation Twitter  twitter.com/Firearms_Nation YouTube http://www.youtube.com/c/firearmsnation Instagram http://www.instagram.com/firearms_nation Or on the web at: www.firearmsnation.com (sign up to get your free ebook!) My guest this week is Shannon Smith.  Shannon just got back from the 2017 World Shoot in France.  The IPSC World Shoot takes place every three years and it's comparable to the Olympics of the action shooting world.  Shannon is a grand master shooter in USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) shooting both open division (that's the race guns with red dots on them) and limited division. Shannon is a National Champion in USPSA, a US Steel National Champion and Pro Am Champion. In addition he is a 8 time Florida State Champion, and finished 3rd in the world in 2008 and 12th this year. He is a professional shooter and works as the match director at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, FL. Before he ventured into competitive shooting, Shannon was in the Army in Special Operations as a Ranger.  There he was involved in small unit tactics, firearms training and attended several major schools. In this podcast we learn what it means to manage a match when shooting a competition.  What you should shoot the match your NOT ready for.  And, what's more important to be a champion, skills or a mental game. I'm excited to get this podcast out, so without further adieu, here is my interview with Shannon Smith… Links mentioned in the podcast: http://www.shannonsmithshooting.com/ http://universalshootingacademy.com/ https://www.blackscorpiongear.com/ Also, Click here for the 2016 Shooter's Summit to get 23 of these kind of interviews with the top firearms instructors! shooterssummit.com And don't forget you can connect with Firearms Nation or just stop by and say hi on these social media links: Facebook  www.facebook.com/firearmsnation Twitter  twitter.com/Firearms_Nation YouTube http://www.youtube.com/c/firearmsnation Instagram http://www.instagram.com/firearms_nation Or on the web at: www.firearmsnation.com (sign up to get your free ebook!) Experienced shooters have a duty to help new shooters at their first match.  Before the stage brief is read on your first stage, ask if there are any new shooters on your squad. Once everyone knows who the brand new shooters are, and eliminates the concern about giving advice to someone who's been shooting for 10 years, and just hasn't really made any progress.  Match Directors could start a sort of "ambassador" program, where shooters volunteer right in Practiscore to be an ambassador for new shooters, and then maybe they get $5 off their match fee for taking a new shooter under their wing for the day.  It’s important to “coach” new shooters before their run on the stage about any 180 traps, some pointers about how to move through certain areas, minding their muzzle on reloads when moving right to left, because DQing new shooters sucks.  I don’t think this needs to, or even should rest solely on the RO. The RO has a lot more going on trying to run shooters, score targets, etc, and I think there's a lot of time on a stage for a more experienced shooter to help out while the RO is doing his thing without distraction. IPSC World Shoot: So the IPSC World Shoot starts on Sunday in France. There are about 5ish people that I know of who are regular podcast listeners who are competing in the World Shoot, and I wanted to wish all of you the best of luck, and those of you on Team USA just a little more luck than the rest...  Make us proud!  Patreon: I've had a few listeners express concern about Patreon, and how there have been headlines recently about how they're "banning conservatives", etc. I like to do my due diligence on things, so I've read a bunch on what happened with the people they have banned, and the thing that really made me feel most comfortable about keeping Patreon as a support model for the show was this episode of the Reuben Report, where he interviews the CEO of Patreon, and actually asks the hard questions.
